Okay, it's time to fess up. Ms Mitchell made some terrible comments
about me and I thought my best revenge was to join the JMDL, pretend to
be a gay man living in England, and fill the list with NJC, particularly
with mails about gay politics(since I knew that would work) and anti
Xtian rhetoric(which works even better). But after all this time, I can
see I have failed in my mission. For some reason I cannot fathom, you
all think that Mitchell woman is great. Maybe I should listen to her
albums and see what all the fuss is about.
No apologies

You know, since I posted my outburst, I've gotten private mail with the
same statements/questions: suggesting that Mr. Henry is upset that we are
not drooling over him. This is the Joni Mitchell Discussion List not the
Pat Henry Discussion List.

There may be some truth to that.
While I have some mild interest in stories from yesteryear, I am much more
interested in what Joni's music today means and what she might be doing next,
not what she did in 1969.
Personally, I thought some of those questions posed to P. Henry, such as
what was her favorite drink and what she was like in 1968 or whenever, to be
kind of pointless because I am sure she has grown a lot since then and those
answers would be anachronistic.

Well since we are fessing up...I joined the list because I was looking for
life answers to all my depressing, psychotic problems. LO and BEHOLD...I
did! I blame Ms. Mitchell for making me this way with all her depressing
music(I think she has subliminal messages in her music & if we listen long
enough we become brainwashed). Do you people have the CIA peeking in your
windows too? Through all the propaganda on the list, I've decided to leave
my husband and children, my Christian religion and republican thinking. (I
don't see any problems with married men getting blow jobs from their
subordinates...it really is a republican conspiracy!). I'm now turning
into a lesbian atheist democrat thanks to this list. Thank you JMDL for
helping me see the light! I feel so much better...my life is finally
coming together. I'm so glad I joined! NO Colin you have convinced me of
the errors of my ways too bad you are not a woman...cuz I'd run away to
England (or where ever you really are) and shack up with you...see I'm
always falling in love with men, what is wrong with me!

I was fortunate enough to catch Koko last year in a small club in
town. It was the same day that Rolling Stone arrived with a feature on
Blues legends, with of course a nice piece & picture of Ms. Taylor.
She put on a great show, she seemed to get into a "zone" where she
sang and controlled the flow of the music. Even though you know she's
sung these warhorses (Wang Dang Doodle included) a zillion times, she
brought a freshness and spontanaity to the show. Her assistant had to
keep bringing her fresh tissues so she could mop her brow - the lady
was enjoying herself, but Good God, she was working hard!
I'm glad I saw her - I caught Junior Wells at the same club and he's
no longer with us...

Good Day all!! This is my first posting. I have been reading Wally's
fantastic website and the JMDL for a couple of months now.
Last night while searching for "Both Sides Now" at the San Francisco
Public Library, I came across a book by Leonore Fleischer titled "Joni
Mitchell....Her Life ...Her Loves....Her Music. It was published in
1976. I couldn't take the book out because it was a Reference! It is a
slim volume loaded with great pictures. Since the library was about to
close, I was able only to scan it quickly.
The author is obviously a BIG fan. (God Bless her!)
I am wondering if this has been discussed before, or if its' existence
was known by any of you guys.
I never did find "Both Sides Now", but based on the review of that book,
maybe it's just as well.

Anyhow, I've read that book. I can't see why it would be filed under

it's certainly *not* up to ME to stifle debate or limit discussion but,
hasn't this little Thread run itself into the ground? much has been said,
including everything that needed? to be said (IMHO).
now i see where someone has the audacity to ask/suggest that Pat take

patience to accept ...
A SUGGESTION:
the Digest version of the JMDL might be more convenient way to lighten
the volume of your mailbox. with the table of contents you get a clear
idea of the topics up for discussion at the moment and can easily 'scroll'
past the NJC messages that are of no interest. i'm on Digest myself.
perhaps it's now ...
TIME OF NO REPLY
Summer was gone and the heat died down
And Autumn reached for her golden crown
I looked behind as I heard a sigh
But this was the time of no reply.
The sun went down and the crowd went home
I was left by the roadside all alone
I turned to speak as they went by
But this was the time of no reply.
The time of no reply is calling me to stay
There is no hello and no goodbye
To leave there is no way.
The trees on the hill had nothing to say
They would keep their dreams till another day
So they stood and thought and wondered why
For this was the time of no reply.
Time goes by from year to year
And no one asks why I am standing here
But I have my answer as I look to the sky
This is the time of no reply.
The time of no reply is calling me to stay
There's no hello and no goodbye
To leave there is no way.

Whenever someone subscribes to the JMDL, they receive an introductory
message. It has been re-written over the last few months - everyone may
want to re-read it. It can be found here:
http://www.smoe.org/lists/joni.info
I wish to highlight a passage from it:
"Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance: To debate is divine, to personally insult
really sucks. We love debate! We love a good conversation - a good
discussion of the issues. We do so with respect for all involved. There are
people from many countries and many cultures on this list. There are also
those who are diplomatic, and those who aren't. There are tall ones and
short ones and ... well, you get the idea. We are a very diverse bunch.
"In a nutshell, respect another's opinion and they will respect yours. It
is not acceptable to personally insult someone publicly on the list. If you
feel the need to do so, go listen to the "Ladies of the Canyon" album and
calm down. If that doesn't work, take your differences off the list!"
I wish to further highlight the highlight:
1) It is not acceptable to personally insult someone publicly on the list.
2) Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance.
I wish to further highlight the highlighted highlight:
Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance.
Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance.
Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance.
Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance.
Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance.
Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance.

I tried to find this book in the L.A. library last year and it apparently
disappeared off the shelf years ago with no replacement. I ultimately was
able to buy a mint condition copy from the GEMM website on the internet for
$20. (For those of us who find the Joni auction prices on Ebay a bit
exorbitant, sometimes GEMM is the perfect alternative for those hard to find
items).

You should be able to easily find a copy of "Both Sides Now" at Borders or
any of the online internet book store web sites. Despite the negative
reviews of that book, I actually did not think it was half bad. The only
thing I noticed about it was that it seemed to be a cut and paste job of
several articles concerning Joni - but it also has some interesting
information and photos.

to all,
sorry if anyone has interpreted anything I've said as disrespectful to anyone here, though I retract nothing... I don't really think it needs to be said but I have no problem with anyone's politics, sexuality or religion as I see them as only superficial aspects of who people really are. (which is why they are such boring, useless topics to me) it appears that some people's defensiveness has caused them to assume that I do, however, and, in that, they have erred.
I don't really understand why but apparently it's perfectly ok to be disrespectful, and even vicious, to me for expressing my opinion because I'm new here, but I'm not allowed to respond to it... I can see nothing in anything I said that is disrespectful to anyone but, again, I do apologize to any who have thus interpreted my statements and will try to be nicer in the future... if I can just figure out how... *L* ...some have expressed they are tired of all this so I'll drop it if you will... but remember when it happens again, I told you so...
someone called me arrogant and to that I agree... it's true, I am... but it's only because I'm very, very good! *G*

I found the following update on Crobsy's website. Curious - there is no
mention of Joni. Crosby is also working on Part II of his autobiography
these days. Kakki
"David Crosby and Gold Circle Entertainment/ Samson Music(CPR's record
company)have involved Richard Harris on working the finishing touches on
David's documentary named "Stand and Be Counted," which is about the role of
popular music in social activism and political movements. The documentary
will feature dozens of interviews with many of the most influential folk and
rock musicians of recent decades, including Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joan
Baez, Elton John, Sting, Carole King, Don Henley, Shawn Colvin, Bonnie
Raitt, Melissa Etheridge, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young.
Actor/comics Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg will also appear in the
documentary.
They are also writing it in book form. We are so excited we have great
people working on this project to insure its great success.
As soon as this project is finished, we will let you know!!"

Subject: 5 stages of ??? (NJC on NJC)
A good friend sent this along, and I find some really striking
similarities to the escalation of the recent flame wars around the list
... so may be this is really 5 Stages of NJC posting!! Or maybe we've
all just been drinking! :-)
Don Rowe
Five Stages of Intoxication
Stage 1 - SMART
This is when you suddenly become an expert on every subject in the
known universe. You know everything and want to pass on your knowledge
to anyone who will listen. At this stage you are always RIGHT. And of
course the person you are talking to is very WRONG. This makes for an
interesting argument when both parties are SMART.
Stage 2 - GOOD LOOKING
This is when you realize that you are the BEST LOOKING person in the
entire bar and that people fancy you. You can go up to a perfect
stranger knowing they fancy you and really want to talk to you. Bear in
mind that you are still SMART, so you can talk to this person about any
subject under the sun.
Stage 3 - RICH
This is when you suddenly become the richest person in the world. You
can buy drinks for the entire bar because you have an armored truck
full of money parked behind the bar. You also make bets at this stage,
because of course, you are still SMART, so naturally you will win all
your bets. It doesn't matter how much you bet 'cos you are RICH. You
will also buy drinks for everyone that you fancy, because now you are
the BEST LOOKING person in the world.
Stage 4 - BULLET PROOF
You are now ready to pick fights with anyone and everyone especially
those with whom you have been betting or arguing. This is because
nothing can hurt you. At this point you can also go up to the partners
of the people who you fancy and challenge to a battle of wits or money.
You have no fear of losing this battle because you are SMART, you are
RICH and hell, you're BETTER LOOKING than they are anyway!!!
Stage 5 - INVISIBLE
This is the final stage of drunkenness. At this point you can do
anything because NO ONE CAN SEE YOU. You dance on a table to impress
the people you fancy because the rest of the people in the room cannot
see you. You are also invisible to the person who wants to fight you.
You walk through the street singing at the top of you lungs because no
one can see or hear you. Even if they could see and hear you, they
would not mind that you woke them from peaceful slumber because you are
still so SMART, GOOD LOOKING and RICH.

The film is not in the can yet. You could email Crosby (through the web
site) and ask him if he has neglected to present a wider representation of
activist musicians.

Hey, before everyone starts piling on poor Crosby, wouldn't it be best to
wait and actually view the film before automatically assuming the worst of
him? The list of artists are just *some* of the people being *interviewed*
for the film, not the only people being featured. Marvin can't exactly be
interviewed from the grave.
I never realized Curtis Mayfield was considered part of the "activist"
movement. Maybe you can enlighten me.
I don't know if Michael has brought up his points by email to Crosby, but I
have and will relay to the list whatever answer I receive.

From: Mark-n-Travis
Subject: MEMBERS OF LOST TRIBE OF MITCHELLJONIA FOUND IN LA HIGH RISE
Last Friday Travis & I embarked on our perilous & technically
unexplainable journey to the the Outer Stratosphere (so what else can
you call LA?) to confer, consult and otherwise hobnob with my fellow
Jimdlers. And in some ways it felt like I had missed the balloon and
the Ruby Slippers had somehow taken me back home.
On Sunday afternoon we drove our rental car in from our hosts' home in
Long Beach to Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles. After hooking up with other
friends Melanie & Olwen (also down from Seattle), we walked along
Wilshire toward Faifax and L A County Museum of Art West where the Van
Gogh exhibit was (and still is) on display. It was a Sunny Sunday
indeed and I was wearing my TI shirt with the JMDL denim work shirt over
it. I turned around and lo & behold, there was Lori Fye standing there
as big as life! And let me tell you all she is just as warm,
intelligent, direct and full of good humour as all of her posts are. We
immediately started chatting as if we'd known one another all our
lives. It was delightful to finally meet her face to face!
We proceeded to the 'holding area' outside the museum entrance and
found Steve & Michelle Dulson, Clark, the Turley's, Steve J and Ken
Corral all waiting in line. Mr. Dulson is quite the gent with an
eternally warm & friendly smile on his face and Michelle is equally warm
& quite lovely. I'm afraid I didn't get much of a chance to talk to
Steve J or the Turleys but it was a pleasure to meet them as well. A
few minutes later and we spied Kakki & Michael Paz heading for the
members entrance to our makeshift stockyard. Mr. Paz is a tall man with
a regal bearing but very amiable & down to earth. A helluva guitar &
keyboard player as well as we were to discover later. And Kakki? What
can you say about Kakki? Brains, talent & lovely to look at as well.
She is everything her posts indicate - gracious, warm, intelligent - and
much more.
The Van Gogh's were indescribably moving. From the somber paintings of
his beginning in the Netherlands to the explosions of color that came
later, they all conveyed beauty and passion in every brush stroke. I
feel priveledged to have seen them.
When we finished buying prints, postcards & t-shirts at the exhibit's
gift shop, Travis & I headed out for the Daily Grill. After an initial
mixup (Kakki, there really *are* *two* streets named San Vicente that
intersect Wilshire Blvd) we arrived about the time the rest of the group
was in the middle of dinner. It was there we met the charming Phyllis
Ward and her friend Lisa (? sorry Phyllis, but I'm not sure of the
name). It seems Ms. Fye also made the same mistake of turning on the
wrong San Vicente and she arrived as Travis & I were finishing our
dinners.
The group adjourned to regroup at Kakki's and Travis, not being 'queer
for Joni Mitchell' as he says I am, headed back to Long Beach. Ken C.
had kindly consented to serve as my 'designated driver' for the evening
since he would also be heading to Long Beach at the end of the evening.
At the risk of embarassing him, I can only describe Ken as a real
sweetheart. He's also fun and a wonderful conversationalist. Riding
with him was a treat.
Once in a while in a big blue moon there comes a night like that one was
and that is exactly what greeted Ken & I as we pulled on to Wilshire &
headed for the 405. A moon so luminous & large it was reminiscent of
the one in the movie 'Moonstruck' (and how appropriate on the day that
Cher sang the National Anthem at the Superbowl!)
We arrived at Kakki's just before the Dulson's and rode up to her
apartment with them. What followed was one of the most delightful &
amazing experiences I have yet had. I was in a roomful of people I had
never met face to face & felt as if I knew all of them. And when Paz
got out the guitar and the VG8 and the singing began - what a
revelation! Everybody knew the words and it was like finding your long
lost tribe! Paz played 'Love Puts on a New Face' and a beautiful
rendition of 'Amelia' and many, many more. Steve Dulson nimbly picked
out some tunes on his dulcimer and had a lot of fun noodling with the
VG8. Paz also played keyboards and we were able to do 'Court & Spark'
not to mention 'Me & Bobby McGee' (a la Janis Joplin) and a wonderfully
harmonious 'Teach Your Children'. And somebody couldn't resist sneaking
a little bit of Grace Slick into the CSN version of 'Wooden Ships' that
the others were doing and I'm sure it sounded really odd (particularly
sung by a baritone). We also did some 'For the Roses' karaoke. But the
big surprise of the evening was Clark. A competent guitarist himself he
favored us with three quite beautiful & moving songs that he had written
himself. Clark is a very intense and talented man and it was great to
get to meet him.
Finally the party began to break up but only after Kakki had shown us a
bit of the video she mentioned earlier. This is a really fascinating
look at a young, fresh-faced Joni sometime before the release of
'Blue'. Her rendition of the as yet unfinished 'All I Want' is
priceless. Hopefully this tape can be made available as a tree at some
time in the future.
So Ken & I set our course for Long Beach, driving through the moonlit
landscape of LA & Orange County. We talked about the evening & the JMDL
and the play 'Angels in America' among other things and as I said
before, it was a real pleasure to share the ride with such an
interesting & amiable human being.
Thanks again to Ken for the ride & the conversation, to Phyllis for
helping procure the tickets to the exhibit and of course a big thank you
& hug to Kakki for being the hostess with the mostest! And also big
thanks to Michael Paz, Steve Dulson & Clark for providing their
excellent accompaniment to our voices. And great big hugs to all of you
that I had the priveledge of meeting and sharing a few precious hours
with. It was a gas! I hope I didn't leave anybody out but as I said, I
didn't get to spend much time with some of you and not everybody went to
Kakki's after the Daily Grill.
So I found those members of the long lost tribe of Mitchelljonia. After
reading the digests of the past week it looks like there were storms on
the list. But we've weathered them before and we'll weather them
again. For anybody who doubts it, let me tell you that the spirit of
fellowship & good will is still alive in JMDL land. Last Sunday I saw
it first hand and I am here to testify! Can I get a witness?
Siquomb, indeed!
