I had forgotten about this one - I remember when the radio station in Raleigh
played it as a midnight feature album - I taped it and listened to it over and
over again until the tape wore out. "Give Me A Heart to Hang On To" I recall
was
simply a breathtakingly beautiful tune. Was this a CD? I may have to check it
out again...talk about "overlooked records"...

hi there guys! here i am writing on board of the akademik sergei vavilov,
the russian
ship that´s taken me and equally deranged friends to antarctica. the
weather´s wild:
22 below and winds of 80 mph, but even that is fair for antarctica. i´m
having the
time of my life. and lemme tell you, all these handsome slavic sailors have
been of
invaluable help in raising our spirits high high high! i think that now i´m
ready to
begin the first volume of my memoirs.
love to y´all, i miss you. have you been behaving yourselves? MMM...i doubt
it...
if you want to write me, simply press reply, and i´ll pick up your posts
via cell
phone from my server in buenos aires.
luv again,

Jim Lamadoo wrote, re: the bandwidth-sucking NJC debate(!):
"...It means to accept the stuff that fills a need for you. As for the
rest, do not criticize it because it may be valuable to someone else.
There may be someone listening who is so different from you that they
need to hear it."
BEAUTIFUL! This is possibly the best argument yet!
And from gentle Pat:
"If one wants to discuss other topics at length, why not e-mail
privately to those who appear to want to talk about Clinton?
Let's try short messages. People are more apt to read them."
As a wordy (mouthy?) poster, include me out! How can you POSSIBLY know
what people are more apt to read, my dear? (But I agree -- godforBID we
should start talking about Clinton again!^) Pleasepleaseplease find and
use your delete button! I'll peruse and edit my OWN e-mails,
thankyouverymuch.
Well, it's silly to get so worked up about such a perennial debate -- it
certainly crops up with nagging regularity. I say we table it till
March, yet another month with a blue moon.
Free speech for me but not for thee? Life IS for learning!

Hello All-
I have finally recovered and also fixed my ailing computer with OS 8.5 and
all is well. It was such an amazing feeling for me to hang out with Kakki in
her hometown. We had a super time and I have to echo my feelings for Vince,
whoa what a show. I went through the exhibit 3 times before I had the feeling
I might be holding up the others (seeing how most of them had disappeared).
There were many pieces I had never seen before and actually I feel like I had
never seen any of them before (even though I own a few prints). It was just so
amazing LIVE. The Daily Grill was alot of fun and the food was quite yummy
(and the waitress kept my credit card which I thought was a ploy by the gods
to get me back there to run into Joan. I never made it back so they will have
to send it to me and I will have to return later to find my love)
Seeing people I have only read is such a treat and a feeling I want to have
regularly. I am in the process of sussing out Joni Fest plans for the New
Orleans area. As soon as I return from Honduras next week I will do some major
plans and get back to yous' on dat. I'd like to comment that some of us are
far to humble about our writing (CLARK) and we need to "get it out there" for
all to appreciate soon. I mean it, you were the "Toy Surprise" in the box of
cracker jacks, for me. Everyone was so nice and I wish it coulda lasted longer
and been on a night where we coulda all slept in late the next day. As usual I
gravitated towards the musicians mostly and enjoyed hearing Mariana (earlier
in the day), Steve Dulson, Kakki (who is getting more daring every time I
party with her and who is threatening to pull out all those hits from the past
any day now), and of course Clark. To the New England group of musicians and
singers, I wish you could have been there with us for this one and I
remembered all of you while it was going on.
Marian while you were unplugged in Vienna we were plugged into the VG-8 and I
know we had to be "sending out those signals her" and I am so happy you are
out playing regularly again (especially all kinds of songs besides Joni). I am
gonna catch your sets one day and I hope it's in Vienna.
My only regrets that I can vocalize in this forum would be that you all could
not be there with us, Kakki didn't catch Crosby, and THOSE BASTARDS WOULDN'T
LET US IN TO SEE EARTH, WIND. AND FIRE. If it's any consolation Kakki, I hear
it was not the whole band (no horns HUH?? Earth wind and PHHHHHTTTT!!)
I will try to get on from Honduras, but if I don't manage, I will see you guys
next week. Be nice to each other and may you enjoy good music (whatever YOU
THINK that might be)
Love and peace to all,
Paz

Subject: (VLJC) - Michael Tomlinson and Kevyn Lettau
I came across a very interesting URL (www.michaeltomlinson.com) about a
Seattle-based singer whose style reminds me of Jimmy Webb and Joshua
Kadison. His name's Michael Tomlinson and what I find most interesting in
his homepage was his FAVORITE PEOPLE AND BOOKS. After smiling inwardly at
the similarities of books he mentioned as his favorites and my own list, I
was even glad to look at his favorite singers and found Joni there along
with (among others) Sade, etc.
I wrote him through email and told him about my affinity with Joni and he
replied by saying that he saw Joni perform last summer and that "she's
wonderful beyond words".
Kevyn Lettau is another bossa-nova jazz singer who used to do lead vocals
for Sergio Mendes. Along with Ella Fitzgerald, she mentioned Joni as an
influence. And I noticed that Joni has this influence among singers of
different genre and that if its not her lyrics that strike them most, its
her innate musicianship verging on the classical.
Joseph
PS. Heard a certain singer named Dee Cartensten (sp?) admitted on TV that
she likes Joni most. Makes me want to check out Dee's albums all of a
sudden as if I already knew her.

actually I do remember reading somewhere in an interview--ah it was Musician
Magazine's 'Artists and Creativity' issue--where Joni said that she found sake
to be "a very soothing elixir." Remember that anyone? She spoke about
liking pot every once in awhile too to get her out of writing jams, but she
also was very conditional about that. Said after smoking "you've only got
about 15 minutes," and then it's over--and that if you do it every day it
doesn't work very well either. Something like that.
all quotes are from memory by the way--but they're pretty accurate I believe.
I have a pretty well tuned Joni ear in some ways--the things she says linger
in it that is.
