Subject: The JMDL Cookbook
Dear all -
Probably due to the increased volume of mail during the Christmas season,
the package containing our precious JMDL Cookbook which was to be Joni's
Christmas present did not reach Wally until the end of January, even though
I sent it airmail on December 7th. It just got waylaid somewhere, I guess.
Anyway, since the whole thing is so late now, and because there are a few
mistakes (e.g. I spelled Lori Fye's middle name wrong!!!), plus a few
recipes with un-Jonified titles, I'd like to open up the cookbook for
additional recipes from those of you who are new to the list as well as
those of you who didn't have the time to make a contribution back in
November. Please try to Jonify your recipe titles. I'd also appreciate any
feedback from those of you who have received the cookbook as a Word document
- - please let me know if you've noticed any errors or if there's anything you
would do to make it nicer.
I'd also like to ask again if there is anyone willing to do a little artwork
for the cover page.
I'd like to set a deadline of March 15 for recipe contributions. You should
also submit a bio along the lines of those found at:
http://www.jmdl.com/guitar/marian/jmdlbios1.htm
http://www.jmdl.com/guitar/marian/jmdlbios.htm
For those of you who have already contributed, now is a chance for you to

The party is still going for me here with the 4 hours of unedited tapes of
our revelry on Sunday! Lots and lots of laughs and some priceless stuff
that I hope to get "re-mixed" to smooth out the sometimes uneven mic-ing.
Mr. Paz, our Herculean house musician, played just killer guitar and
keyboards non-stop for the chorus well into the night and early morning.
Mr. Dulson played dulcimer on the electric guitar through the magic of the
VG-8 and also on the REAL dulcimer. Clark played several beautiful and very
impressive original songs that he just came up with in the last week or so.
The rest of the gang all sang with truly beautiful voices and everyone, of
course, knew each song by heart. We segued into CSN and sometimes Y, and
then really segued off into tunes by Chicago, Janis Joplin, Blind Faith,
Michael Franks, Chris Issak, Jefferson Airplane and whatever else came to
mind. The neighbors amazingly did not call the police but I've been been
slinking down the halls ever since. Today as I left home, a neighbor walked
our her door and I tried desperately to avoid her. Yet she waited for me to
get to the elevator - I thought that the boom was going to be lowered but
instead she asked me if I have been playing the guitar. I spilled out that
I'd had a big party of musicians the other night and how sorry I was about
the noise. She said, "Oh, no, no, my boyfriend and I were looking in vain
out the window, trying to see where the concert was coming from so that we
could go, too!" Then she said with a big smile "my boyfriend and I noticed
you were playing Joni Mitchell." I nodded and gave a big smile back as I
scurried away while my luck was holding (hey, we must have sounded pretty
good ;-D).
Earlier in the day we'd all met up at the museum to see the Van Goghs. I
finally got to meet some of my favorite jimdlers Catherine and Tom Turley,
Mark and Travis, and Lori Fye, along with again seeing my good jimdler
buddies, Michael, Steve, Michele, Ken, Steve J, and Phyliss. The paintings
took my breath away and pulled very hard on my heart. Toward the end of the
exhibit I could not hold back the tears, that is how affecting it was. I
felt he did seem too sensitive a soul for this world and that sense is
conveyed in every little brushstroke. The exhibit ends April 4th and there
are still tickets available starting in mid-March for anyone who may still
be interested in seeing it.
We all converged at a big table inside the Daily Grill and yakked (me the
loudest) so much about the Joan that I'm sure the manager phoned her and
warned her that the pod people had arrived and to stay in the safety of her
home that afternoon!
It was a very wonderful and special day for me and I thank all of you, who
traveled so far and did so much, to make it that way.

Subject: On the loose at NAMM '99 (NJC)
Through the unending generosity of Michael Paz (who is really THE guy),
Mariana and I were able to secure much-coveted badges to the NAMM convention
last Saturday. Since Michael had real work to do there, Mariana and I were
on our own to wreak our course of grace and havoc through the show. We had
fun playing $10,000 rare Koa wood guitars in the beautiful Taylor exhibit
room. Next to me strumming along in the big crowd was none other than record
producer (Jimmy Webb among others) and musician Fred Mollin. Then we took
over the Kawai piano room where Mariana gave a 30 minute concert. We saw
someone from Smashing Pumpkins and I saw some members of Funkadelic. We were
in the Godin guitar room when martial-arts-expert-now-turned Guru, Steven
Seagal, replete in a long, burgundy silk Chinese tunic, entered with an
entourage of about 10 people, including two women in Japanese kimonos, and
commanded to see "the best guitar you have." Everyone buzzed about him in
awe and hushed tones, except Mariana and I who just kept perusing the
merchandise and rolling our eyes. It possibly offended Dalai Seagal that we
were not paying sufficient homage and he suddenly floated back out the door,
with full entourage in tow. They must have appeased him because he just as
suddenly floated back in, with the entourage now starting to trip over each
other, as they shadowed his every move. He sat down in the center of the
room and proceeded to play guitar as everyone stood as still as mannequins,
frozen in obeisance. We could not get out of there fast enough, laughing and
somewhat horrified at the same time at the spectacle. We are talking
seriously bizarre here! (I will say that he *does* play guitar quite well).
Later in the day we discovered that we missed seeing Crosby, Pevar and
Raymond at 2 p.m. They had been handing out autographed CDs of their "Live
at the Wiltern" concert. I let out a long wail when I heard about it. This
is a 2 CD set of the concert I attended back in November and it was one of
the most unbelievable events I've ever attended, with Crosby solo, Crosby &
Nash, Crosby & Collins and CPR performances all in one night. Happily, I
learned that the CD is also available through the CPR web site at
http://www.crosbycpr.com HIGHLY recommended.
Speaking of Graham, I also saw him on Tom Snyder tonight and he is as
wonderful as ever. It's his 57th birthday today. He arranged the
soundtrack for "The Sixties" mini-series that is airing this weekend on NBC.

This is like a JMDL personality profile!
If you love Joni, you are probably liberal and generally tolerant of human

Joni Mitchell knows she's something of a commodity, and must feel great
pressure to appear as she must believe that people want her to appear - the
perennially fresh-faced golden folk-goddess. She's certainly compelled by
the visual and is probably motivated by a great degree of pride in her
appearance (didn't she work in ladies' wear when she had a retail gig?) -
and she's got the means to afford more than "all those vain promises on
beauty jars" - she can buy first-rate cosmetic medical and dental care!
Truth is, the desiccant affects of the rock'n'roll lifestyle will shrivel
most tissue.Unless you can $upplement with $ome kind of dietary, topical, or
tran$dermal plumping, you'll have to be...slumping! - I'm sure Joni's got an
intricate balance worked out -

I read an interview with Joni where she was talking about how hard it was
to be an older woman in the music scene and Hollywood, and how women are
expected to look young and how prevalent it is to get facelifts. At that
time (well over a year ago) she said she hadn't done it, but that she
wouldn't totally rule it out.
Speaking of people listening to her older music, have any of you listened
to her on the Herbie Hancock I wrote about a few days ago? Plus I read
recently she's recording or did record with another jazz musician. I
suspect she'll be going more and more in that direction, so maybe it'll be
the jazz fans--not the pop or rock fans (many of us on this list of course
span the musical spectrum)--that "rediscover" her music.

I'm decloaking to add my semi-superfluous "me too" to this non-Joni
content debate.
It is precisely BECAUSE of the NJC that I find this list most
interesting -- I'm far more interested in getting to know the people who
are moved by Joni's work than in reading a lot of "I love Joni" posts,
because we ALL love Joni. Next topic!
If you find your mailbox getting annoyingly clogged with NJC, I highly
recommend the digest format. Many times I'll delete an entire digest if
I don't have time for the NJC, and the JC doesn't appear to contain any
timely info. That's one of the reasons that we're such sticklers for
labeling in the subject line. (Aren't we a cooperative bunch of
playmates?)
As for my more petulant playmates still holding their collective breath,
if you want to read a groovy new Joni thread, START ONE!!! I'd LIKE to
think that I'm here for your edification and entertainment, but I
wouldn't DREAM of imposing that awesome task on my fellow jimdlers.
For Colin: I mean this most lovingly, my dear: You are the Marlene
Dietrich of this list -- you know you want to come back, so come back!
For the rest of you more articulate posters, thanks for your words of
kindness and wisdom. The wind is blowing at about 50 mph today, and my
words are struggling to break free.
Ands a final neener-neener-neener, for dear Marilyn: "...every song

I bought "Gershwin's World" when it came out last year, and I think
the Joni stuff is outstanding, and Stevie Wonder is always a treat to
hear, but I thought the record as a whole was not very cohesive. The
other jazz musician you refer to is most likely Kyle Eastwood's "From
There to Here" which features her cover of Marvin Gaye's "Trouble
Man". Even though there's only half the Joni, I like this record a lot
more than the Herbie. It swings from start to finish. Both are
definitely worth the price of admission though.

Well well. Recent postings about NJC were very interesting, weren't they?
They really turned out, surprise surprise, to be difficult feelings about
gay NJC. I'm sure gay and lesbian subscribers to the list will heave yet
another huge sigh and just say get over it. P. Henry and others may have
great stories about knowing or meeting Joni to fill up their posts, but I
don't. And even if I did, I wouldn't want to restrict myself solely to
talking about that meeting on this list, or sticking strictly to talking
about Joni's musical or lyrical production. I'm a richer canvas than that -
everyone is. And a list of people only ever able to talk about Joni's
music - no matter how much we love that music - would deny us the broader
humanity that makes jmdl worthwhile. People who hate (gay) NJC - people who
really hate it - should maybe ask themselves why they hate it when they
have a scroll button and (I hope) better things to be doing than reading
posts they don't wanna read.
Joni Mitchell's music is wound round our lives - certainly around mine. But
to pretend that music that you really **love** is divisible from other
parts of your life is to kid yourself.
I really hope Colin comes back - cos he was one of the shiniest things on
this list. But if he didn't, I wouldn't blame him.

As a very early member of the list I was one who was nudged, at first,
about NJC posts. I'd seen too many lists sink when allowed to go off
topic. But that hasn't happened here, I'm happy to say. I su.bscribe to
14 lists, as well as owning one, and this one is the only one that isn't
work related. So I'm pretty picky about my time spent reading posts.
Though I don't always agree with every NJC post, they are seldom
personal notes to one member (which really irks me) nor are they ever
boring. I enjoy the NJC, see them as relevant, and happily delete those
that don't interest me at all.

Isn't it weird that we now have a recurring thread about the lack of
Joni Content? Just asking....
Anyway, I'm glad to see the discussion. I enjoy most of the NJC
threads, including the ones about sexual preferences different from my
own. After all, what does it _cost_ me to skip things that I'm not
interested in? Nothing. Tolerance folks.
I have a video clip of Joni at Ben & Jerry's "Troubadors of Folk". She
talks about non-divisionalism as a concept that she really likes. We
spend so much time talking about differences between each other that we
don't see the wonderful things that we have in common. Like in Sting's
song "Russians" when he worries about the nuclear threat and wonders
aloud if the Russians love their children too..... Of course they do!
My point is that we don't spend enough time putting things together. It
reminds me of a concert I attended once. The band divided the audience
down the middle and asked those on each side to try to sing louder than
the other side. By the end of the song, each side was booing the other
side! Three Dog Night's front man said, "Wow! These are your
*neighbors* you guys."
My point: Tolerance is a key concept to the JMDL. They have many wise
sayings in Alcoholics Annoymous. One of them sounds trite at first:
"Take what you like and *leave* the rest." (My emphasis.)
It means to accept the stuff that fills a need for you. As for the
rest, do not criticize it because it may be valuable to someone else.
There may be someone listening who is so different from you that they
need to hear it.
I enjoy hearing news about political struggles and everyday life in
places other than the USA! I wish there was more of that on the JMDL.
It never occured to me that in Austria you can't get Chinese food for
example. The list will expand your world but only if you are *open* to
diversity.

Hey, you guys!
Can anyone answer these questions? I've asked them in previous posts but not
gotten any responses, so I'm trying again.
1) I've been to the Elvis Costello Homepage looking for the Vanity Fair
article where he praises the song Shades Of Shades Conquering, but I've been
unable to find it. Can anyone transcribe this part and post it? I do sooooo
want to read exactly what he said.
2) I am also interested in knowing what Joni has said in praise of Shawn
Colvin. Again, I assume this is contained in a article and wonder if anyone
can transcribe it or refer me to the appropriate source.
3) I recently posted something in regard to the "Joni Stats" thread where I
mentioned my recollection (albeit vague) of reading an article (I think around
the time TI was released) where Joni discusses selling her paintings (one to a
Japanese person) and where she also mentions Americans being threatened by the
"thrice gifted" (or something like that). I don't think I dreamed this up and
I would really like to know in what publication that article appeared. Can
anyone help with any or all of these questions?
Thanks!
