Nothing much to add to this really,
...strange how I posted about encountering a nasty experience on another
List, to then come back here and have some pretty heated 'discussions'
on the topic on NJC. How about I add this incendiary remark:
I find that the List is primarily dominated by American current affairs
and for me...- this- is tedious!
I really don't mind the NJC, occasionally it gets overwhelming and I
find myself abit put off but I just delete and move on. I find that
more often than not I would prefer -not- to add my .02c worth as it can
be so subjective. I can only hope that we move on from this, although
history of the List has shown that this topic comes in cycles.
I will say that Colin has been one of the lovely people on the List and
has -always- been delightful when communicating with me. Take care
Colin.
So here's to rediscovering our joy in communication and perhaps we can
agree to disagree and move forward.
BTW, great thread's Marilyn.
Vanessa.

Is it the blue moon or what people? Relax, take a pill!
Joni content...Joni content...
We can talk about Martha...
We can talk about landscapes...
Sorry Joni you're out of line...
About Jesus or Hitler...?
NO!
Howard Hugh or Charlie Chaplin's movies...?
Joni, go somewhere else to talk about that NJC
Please just come and talk to me
any old theme you choose
Sorry missy NOT ALLOWED!
You could talk like a fool--I'd listen
NO! NO! NO!
Is it the key to your freedom
or is it the bars on your prison?
We have guide lines here you know
Are you gagged by your ribbons?
Are you really exclusive or just miserly?
We are exclusively Joni Mitchell talk
Come and spend some on me-
Shut me up and talk to me!

This anti-NJC thread is much more annoying and a far greater waste of
band-width than sex, religion or politics IMNSHO! One reason I love Joni is
because she addresses these impolite subjects so passionately and
intelligently. And I have found that her fans debate these issues on a much
loftier, compassionate level than any discussion group out there. It is very
insulting to be told to find another list if I can't stick to strict JC.
Rather than requesting the discussion be limited to JC, may I suggest
that NJC-phobes learn how to filter NJC from the subject line of their email
or else spend a few extra seconds scrolling past NJC?
When I first joined the JMDL I complained about NJC until I realized
what a selfish jerk I was being. I discovered that it isn't really difficult
to scroll or delete, and found that I actually enjoy some NJC more than the
JC confessionals, games and polls.
I bet that when Joni reads this list, which I have no doubt she does
every now & then, she is proud of the wide range of topics her fans discuss.
Can you imagine how bored she'd be if we restricted the discussion to: "Gee,
Joni is so great"?

Al Kooper was indeed leader of Blood, Sweat and Tears only for their first album
"Child is Father To the Man". He wrote "This Diamond Ring" (Gary Lewis & The
Playboys big hit), did the "Supersession" album with S.Stills, and that's his
rolling Hammond organ on Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone", to name a few of his
rock credentials. I don't know about his "Rainy Night" story, but he just came
out with a new book about his life in rock and roll which I have not read but
read good things about. His new book is called "Backstage Passes and
Backstabbing Bastards: Memoirs of a Rock and Roll Survivor". Confusingly
enough, he has an out of print book called "Backstage Passes: Rock and Roll Life
In the Sixties", which is probably the one you are referring to. I do not know
(and the review I read did not say) if the second book recycles the content of
the first.
I remember an interview I heard ages ago where a DJ was asking Joni about "Rainy
Night House", and asked if the "Holy Man on the FM Radio" referred to a radio
jock. Joni laughed and said, no, she was referring to a musician.

This just in: I should have checked out Amazon.com first. The book is reviewed
by Kooper himself, also another reviewer mentions "I didn't know about the
Joanie (sic) Mitchell story". All the reviewers loved the book.

Nobody responded to my earlier post about this, so I'll ask again:
I've seen STAS, Cloud, Ladies, with the HDCD sticker and they all have new
packaging (with the blurb on the back and the bottom about remasterd by
Joe Gastwirt) but the discs of Blue that I've seen with the HDCD sticker
do not have new packaging, it's the same as the old one. (Well, old since
the "newly packaged" nonsense from 1995 or so.) So, can anyone confirm
whether or not these new Blues are, indeed, HDCD?!?

I disagree. I have been on the list for just about a year now, and
when I signed up, I was so excited to read and learn all about Joni. At
first, I used to scroll past all of the NJC stuff. However, if this
list was limited to all things Joni, it would be boring as hell. I
probably only communicate with maybe a handful of people from here
off-list, but this is largely because I am usually too lazy to email
people privately with a "me-too" post, expressing my agreement with
their ideas. I truly enjoy the NJC on the list -- it is what allows us
to learn about each other, and through our posts, we convey a sense of
who we are, what our interests are, and what we believe in. True, some
threads drive me up the wall from time to time, so when that occurs, I
just scroll past them until the thread dies. It is through people's NJC
posts that I am able to construct some image of them in my mind. Even
though I have never communicated directly with many people on the list,
I have images of them in my head from their posts, and I feel like I
know them already.
I recently was searching for a Stevie Nicks or Fleetwood Mac list to
join, and they all sounded so strict. The one Stevie list I looked into
had a firm rule that people could only talk about Stevie, and could show
no disrespect. Well, I started thinking how boring that would be. How
many times can you say that "Fireflies" is your favorite song, or
whatever? Also, the restriction to negative things made me think of
this list, and how the negative things said about Joni has allowed us to
strengthen our opinions and look at things from another perspective.
Thus, I decided against the Stevie list, simply because with stringent
rules like that, people cannot really get to know each other, and no
debate can be made. I pictured a few hundred people sitting front of
their computers draped in chiffon and raving over and over about the
same old things, and it gave me the willies.. LOL!
So, my long-winded point is that it is through the
debates/conversations/random thoughts/whatever of listers about
sexuality, religion, politics, etc. we learn about and from each other.
And I also think that all these debates are damn interesting! How can
we say that politics are not important when we damn well know that Joni
may very well get DED longings and write some songs about the Clinton
years? How can we say that sexuality is not important either, with Joni
taking a journalistic beating for being "Rock's Old Lady", for depicting
the story in "Two Grey Rooms", and from a general perspective of how
sexuality inadvertently labels us -- after all, isn't Joni someone who
is disgusted with labelling?
Keep up the debates and thoughts and random posts that are NJC,
listers... It makes the list a multi-faceted place to be.
