To me that means that they're not as good as they're thought to be, and I certainly wouldn't say that's the case with the titles you listed. For example "No Other" by Gene Clark is one of my favourite records yet I've never seen it on a top 100 list, never mind a top 10. And when we voted here recently I didn't even give it a mention. Most non Joni fans think Blue it is her best, probably because it features so often in these "Top 100" lists. I suppose the idea was to get people to look beyond the accepted classics and vote for what they really like. I'm not sure exactly what Al's claim to fame is or was, although I believe he may have been a member of the '60's band "Blood, Sweat and Tears." In any event he was part of the NYC/Greenwich Village club scene about the time Joni Mitchell was starting her career and living in 16th Street in the Chelsea district of Manhattan. Al apparently met Joni through her then-current boyfriend, a drummer named Roy (or Ray) Blumenthal (who may have played drums for "Blood, Sweat and Tears"; and, of course, we all know about Joni and those "boom, boom pachyderm" players). Al claims in his book that he and Joni hooked up, and that "Rainy Night House" is about an experience he and Joni shared. (I presume it was a rainy night, and Joni and Al took a taxi to Al's mother's home, and Al's mother was out of town, . . . well, you know the rest.) I don't know if there's any truth to Al's story --which ain't a bad one, by the way, as Joni Mitchell stories go -- but whatever the inspiration, "Rainy Night House" is one among many great songs by Joni Mitchell.>> mojo ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1999 15:19:31 -0500 (EST) From: Bill Dollinger Subject: Re: The Joni game No offense, coyotes, but this thread is really lame. What sorts of things *are* there in life besides the sexual, political, and religious? (and what do you mean, "just"??!?) -- especially taking a broad definition of those topics....you know they say that what is personal is political, for instance. Anyway, if you'd have us not discuss the sexual, political, and religious things that Joni's music touches on, P. Henry, please inform us what aspects of her work you *do* deem open to our scrutiny. (Interestingly, you have posted elsewhere that we shouldn't try to understand Joni's life because she is an Artist and that would be tearing her down. That would throw a big chunk of JC right out the window...and you then complain about a lack of JC?? Just a thought...) > I wonder just how many 'veterans' there are like you... [snip] > ...keeping their thoughts to themselves because they know by experience > it will do no good to speak out. Sounds suspiciously like one of those self-fulfulling prophecies to me... The crux of the matter, I think, is that any attempt to regulate the content of the list presents possibly insurmountable practical problems, entirely apart from the moral question. The above comments point up what others have already said, that everyone has their own opinion of what is appropriate content and what isn't, and that there's too much of a grey area (partly due to the range and depth of Joni's lyrics) between NJC and JC. For instance, I don't think finding our e-mail tags in Joni lyrics is exactly JC, fun though it might be (and my hat is off to Marilyn!). Complaining about lack of JC, and appealing to people to post more JC and less NJC, rather than regulating as such, is equally pointless unless everyone agrees on definitions of JC/NJC, which is not, IMHO, going to happen, ever. BTW, I'd like to commend Gina's post on this subject...a very thoughtful description of what it's like to be a member of a discussion list.
