It's always fun to compare Bible to Torah. Christians are much more rabid about issues sexual! I used to work for a (Reform) rabbi who said the Torah's take on Sodom and Gomorrah was not that they were burned so much for the sexual stuff but for the ungenerous nature and inhospitality of the community. What I'm wondering is why aren't more people railing about how few women there are in the Senate now, when we could use some women sense to counterbalance all this ridiculous male jockeying for power. Aren't we sick to death of that. I've caught up with the most recent ones. In any case, I just heard on our local jazz station Joni singing "The Man I Love." (Not as good as Billie Holiday, but...) I called up and found out that she is on Herbie Hancock's CD "Gershwin's World." She sings "Summertime" too. It's a fascinating album, showcasing HH's versatility--everything from classical work to the funky Stevie Wonder (who sounds REALLY good here) and of course JM. Check it out. Wayne Shorter, Kenny Garret, Chick Corea too. When I mentioned Joni to someone recently he said her father was friends with George Shearing and that's how she got introduced to jazz. That sounded far-fetched to me--I always had the impression her dad was a kind of ordinary Joe. Anybody know about this one? Thanks! DK ******************************************************************* "... Be quite still and solitary. Franz Kafka +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 13:28:58 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Early lyrics to "All I Want" Thanks to the efforts of a couple of sweet listers here, I recently received an incredible tape of archived BBC Joni concerts spanning from 1970 to the mid-80s. I'd learned previously of the 1970 concert, which I heard described by a couple of Joni friends at the taping as the legendary "Joni in the Pink Dress BBC concert." It is incredible, with Joni playing piano, guitar and dulcimer on material spanning from her early, unrecorded songs up to the beginnings of "Blue." One of the highlights of the concert is Joni introducing a new song that she is working on, which later became "All I Want." The early lyrics, however, started out with a bit of a different tone - She speaks more in the first person and sounds a little more disillusioned than what we came to hear in the final product. Maybe this has been brought up on the list before but I had not seen it before. Here are the early lyrics: I am on a lonely road and I am traveling Looking for the truth in men and in me All my jealousy, my greed - it will unravel me It undoes all the joy that could be Ah, you're not real, no, no Do you think you're fooling me? With false pretensions of phony camaderie? If any one can find it in a dictionary would they let me know please. It's a long standing bet I have with someone.I used the word in conversation once with this person and they stopped me in my tracks. The book of knowledge was bought out but let me down.I still have faith in the magazine that used the word but can't find any other source to back me up .I thought the plethora of knowledge on this list may dig up something.
