'the handmaid's tail' is like being hit over the head with a political idea, and lame as science fiction, (though not as awful as paul theroux' o-zone). anyway, loving the comments. as for pat henry's suggestion to go somewhere else if it's not joni, what if i want to talk about love, death, politics and bergman's nordic blues with joni-fans, for god's sakes? where else would i go? trxschwa, who thinks the 'email tag in joni lyrics' is beneath him... Books like Atwoods are like dreams to me (sorta bad dreams in the case of Atwood who is at times hard to take, yes) ...the details sometimes escape me, though the essence can remain for years. If I recall correctly, Robber Bride characters are musicians and historians and I think an artist. Not to forget the ultimate Atwood villainess, Zenia. I agree with you about Handmaid's Tale, though I must confess I could not put it down! Lady Oracle is pretty good too - the main character is a writer. Your post is very interesting and made me review why I like Suzanne and what made me like singers in the first place. I like the musicianship inherent in her music (hornlike voice, no inane words set to rambling music) as well as her lyrics with such lines as "... my name is Calypso and my garden overflows.." It wasn't until SOLITUDE STANDING's monster hot "Luka" that made followers out of people outside of the Seattle area. Fave SV album: DAYS OF OPEN HAND (most esp. Paula's right-wing "friends" paid for her braces, nose-job, hair stylist, wardrobe, and legal fees. Does this not make you cringe, Kakki? Why does the fact that Mr. Starr used illegally obtained tapes to make his pitiful case remain obscured? The whole thing reaks of entrapment, self-righteous partisanship, and sexual McCarthyism. Bill Clinton is a typical alpha male who emulates JFK. And our beloved JFK was apparantly a-hell-of-a-lot randier than HillBilly! So why don't we just character-assassinate Kennedy while we're at it? Or how about that lustful King David? All those wives and concubines! Oh, oh, my my.... Let's not expose our impressionable youth to the Bible lest they be tainted forever! Reagan's lies involved the killing of countless thousands in a covert war of guns for drugs. Few cared because it lacked sex-appeal. Publicist Michael Jensen said Larson died Tuesday at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles from an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the brain. Larson originally was admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank this week with massive liver failure and was then transferred to UCLA Medical Center, where she died, Jensen said. An earlier report from a member of Larson's staff that she had been admitted to the hospital with a brain seizure was incorrect, he said. "We were truly devastated when we heard the news that our friend Nicolette Larson was admitted into the hospital," said Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills & Nash. He added, "The doctors did everything in their power to save her, but sadly they could not." The Montana-born Larson released six albums and won several awards, including being named best new vocalist by the Academy of Country Music in 1984. Since 1994, Larson divided her time between a grueling concert schedule, appearing with Jimmy Buffet, The Beach Boys and Willie Nelson, and acting. She played a nightclub singer in the movie "Twins," starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. She began her career when she moved to California at age 21, and shortly afterward landed a job with Hoyt Axton's band. She soon appeared with Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen and became a top backup singer for such solo artists as Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Michael McDonald. Within five years, Larson was at the top of the pop charts with "Lotta Love," the Neil Young classic. That song propelled Larson's career and her subsequent hits included "Rumba Girl," "Fool Me Again" and "I Only Want to Be With You." Larson lived in Los Angeles with her husband, drummer Russell Kunkel, and 7-year-old daughter Elsie May. My issue with him, which I've repeated here many times, has never been what he did with whomever. If he's so damned entrapped, put-upon, set-up, etc., etc., then why could he not tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth to begin with? If he had, this would have been over long ago. His lawyers and other advisors gave him bad advice from the beginning. In my experience in trials, defendants are advised to tell the truth upfront and then think of clever ways to mitigate the damage afterwards. There is often a somewhat strategic reason in advising this - most judges, especially Federal judges, smell B.S. a mile away and one can risk alienating the judge from the onset by bullshitting him or her. Think of how much more sympathy and respect Clinton would now have if he told the truth in the beginning and then mitigated it by proving entrapment or whatever. And please don't tell me about his "interpretation" of sex under oath. His subsequent false statements publically for months until the specter of possible DNA evidence arose, leaves me cold to trusting anything more he has to say on the subject. As far as the Rabbi, my thoughts were best summed up and explained by Fred Simon a few posts back tonight.
