Try "Boys For Pele" if you haven't got it yet. it's obtuse and abstract but
has some of the most beautiful songs Tori's ever written. Choirgirl Hotel is
good too, but I am constantly drawn to BFP. i'd say the last two are my fave
though "Under The Pink" is yummy. oh yeah and the Crucify EP, which has great
piano versions of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (take that Nirvana bashers) and
"Angie". Plus a neat remix of Crucify.

That would be:
John Wyndham, "The Chrysalids"
I have not read it and I had to ask for the answer on the Fulton Street
list as I could not recall it either.

Given Joni's penchant for hanging out with gay boys playing billiards at the

Look that is an over-generalized concept, I know (me overgeneralize?). I'm
throwing it out for fodder nonetheless. Furry Sings the Blues is a good
example. If the guys not leaving, down and drunk and using, not to blame,
mean and old but liked nonetheless, a strange boy, or just yanking her to her
knees, then there's something up with the negative depectioni of men. Not
that there isn't a conterpoint, either.
I still can't give Furry Sings the Blues a listen, just makes my "male" self
esteem sink.
P.S. I understand that this post has not had adequate development and is
half baked, but should anyone be interested in discussing this concept of male
bashing, subtle as it may be to some, then I will assume that the subject will
develop in a natural way. >>

Oh dear, I *don't* want to wear this out but.... Again, Grace was never
actually married to any of the musicians in the Airplane or the
Starship. She had flings with Spencer Dryden, Jack Casady & Jorma
Kaukonnen. She lived with Paul Kantner & had his child, China. Towards
the end of that relationship she got involved with the Jefferson
Starship's lighting director, Skip Johnson (Paul had him fired when he
found out but they later rehired him). She married Skip Johnson and is
now divorced from him. (By the way, she says in her book that she is
now a 'great big fag hag'- her words, not mine - and really enjoys the
company of gay men.)
And finally, Skip Spence is not the same drummer/person as Spencer
Dryden. Skip Spence played drums for the Airplane on their very first
album, The Jefferson Airplane Takes Off. He subsequently quit the band
and was replaced by Spencer Dryden who played with the Airplane up
through 'Volunteers', I believe. Joey Covington played on the couple of
Airplane albums released before the name was officially retired.
And now I think we should either end this thread, continue it via
private email or take it over to the 2400 Fulton Street discussion list
which discusses all things Airplane/Starship/Hot Tuna related. I'm sure
the NJC police are hot on my tail & I expect to be busted at any minute.

Thanks Mark, you seem to be especially well-schooled on these topics. It
*is* complicated keeping track of all the JA/JS/HT, et al family members and
incarnations and I've learned a lot of new information. The JA were close
and intertwined with Joni and her buddies CSN and others, plus she and Grace
have always been good friends and spoken admiringly of each other on many
occasions, so I'm not going to worry too much about "proper" relevance here.
I spent the afternoon down at NJC police headquarters myself ;-)

I haven't heard the entire album for many years... it's on my 'to get again' list... (imagine... at one time I even owned their 'great society' album!) but yes, I'm pretty sure that was on there... also, "wooden ships"...

Hello JMDL persons. I have lurked around for a few weeks, enjoying most of
your banter. I love Joni, and have been a fan since I bought her first LP,
whatever it's called, just after it came out. I feel like she is one of the
few "True Artists" of our musical generation. Someone who just "is"...not
affected by phase or hype, just herself, a gifted songsmith, painter, and
strong woman.
What really compeled to write finally, was to respond to the Micheal Hedges
question.
My vote would be for his last CD, Oracle. I had the pleasure of seeing
Micheal perform twice, very early in his carrer, and on his second to the
last performance, on his last tour. It was in Louisville Kentucky, at a
roadhouse kind of place, and the room contained about 100 people, 1/2 of
which seemed to be guitarist who ooooed & ahhhhed all night long. I must
say he was an amazing sight...all this music from Oricale come pouring off
his ten fingers. You watched it happening, but he made it look so easy that
you couldn't believe it all came out of his guitar. He wore a copper helmet
on his shaved head, and sat on a huge red, rubber ball while he played, and
on break he stopped at most tables and talked with us, while he drank a
White Russian. He had one more stop on a small, maybe 25 city tour, and
that was Minneapolis, the next night. Within weeks I read in Goldmine
magazine he had passed. As my lovely wife and I made our way out the door
to our car that night, we passed by a stand set up selling each off
Micheals cd's, and I picked up Oricale... we listened in amazement on the
way home to his wonderful sounds. His last recording was brillant!
Nice to be at JMDL! Bryan Aaker

Wasn't she married to Darby's brother? I can't think of his name, but I
thought she was married to the brother. Darby wrote "Somebody to Love",
didn't he? I am sure it was his brother he was married to. But then
again, what the hell do I know! lol!
