Jack Nicholson and David Crosby are mentioned, among others) . One of the prostitutes describes how artfully she decorated her own apartment, and says "it would make Joni Mitchell proud." #2) from The First Time by Cher (I've always hated her singing, but thought she was a gutsy lady and an interesting actress.) In the book she describes how she's invited to David Geffen's house for dinner, and presumably he's interested in her. While at his house late at night she says Joni Mitchell came in to say she had finished and was leaving. Cher asks David what Joni is doing there and he says "she's recording an album and she lives here" . The album was Court & Spark by the way. Now, speaking of the tribute album and Joni covers got me to thinking about what Joni songs we might like to hear JONI remake...as much as I love her original version of Corrina, Corrina, I would absolutely love to hear what she could do with that song now, with her lower, throatier sound. Maybe Grace Slick was talking about Jimi when she wrote this: Oh but the West wind, The West wind echoes like metal wings Like a weather vane whining through the night Iron wheel turns in front of the sky Four pronged metal cuts the sky Man must fly Man must fly She was describing the four winds in musical terms and I always thought she had to be talking about an electric guitar when she got to the West wind. The other 3 are: North wind sounds like freezing horns Sailing through the East wind And the East wind has winding, unwinding strings (sitar maybe?) South wind sounds like skin on drums Skin on skin Oh but the West wind.....etc. Mark in Seattle ever eager to plug Grace ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 04:59:47 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Auction: NJC Here are 5 CDs which I am auctioning off. Of course, I love being part of this list (in my own lurker way) and it nearly kills me to un.subs.cribe. However, I've had masses of digests piling up since before the holidays and it doesn't look like I can carve out the time to get to them (even after several deletion sessions). I love reading everyone's comments. I've learned a tremendous amount about many things aside from our beloved Joan. My best to you all and I'll come back when I can. When she sings "If I fell in love with you, would you promise to be true..", it's a very poignant moment... [] bob, thanks for the reminder of a great moment in a great movie. it was set and filmed in marin county, where i grew up. lots of divorces among my friends' parents, and my family wasn't in good shape either. 'shoot the moon' is a very personal experience for me. and i'm not much of an eagles fan, but using 'i can't tell you why' for the closing credits was powerful. i'd dropped out of college and was living in marin when they were filming it and a friend of mine was on crew. once he was sitting on a grassy west marin hill on lunch break with sandwich and soda, and he just let out a belch. looked to see if anyone was around, and he was sitting near diane keaton. she just looked back at him and let out a louder belch, then they both lost it. they became lunch buddies. just a lowbrow little story that always makes me smile. patrick np - koyaanisqatsi (new release) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Jan 1999 23:00:41 PST From: "Angela Takats" Subject: joni moments Hi Listers I can’t (never ever) get over how amazing joni’s voice is – I’m sure long-time listers have discussed this forever – but here’s my approach. There are some parts of songs that are so beautiful I play them over and over and over and can’t belive she can do "that" with her vocal chords….whether it be her voice mimicking the sound of a particular instrument or sliding up and down a scale – it’s amazing and here are just a few of my "vocal" favourite moments – please let me know if you agree: FTR Banquet – "Seagulls come down and they squawk at me, Down where the water skiers GLIDE………" (and on she goes) BLUE A Case Of You – in the second verse the way she sings "oh I could drink a case of YOU….. darling" (how does she climb those vocal stairs!) Richard – "Only a dark cocoon before I get my GORGEOUS wings and fly away" Ladies of the Canyon The Arrangement – the way she sings the entire song! Such vocal strength, conveying such emotion HEJIRA Black Crow – theres’ a part in the song wher her voice sounds like an electric guitar? Does anyone know what I mean – how it echoes that guitar bit? And other fav "things in joni's songs: I love the drums in "the Jungle Line" (in a low cut blouse she brings the beer) And the "heart beat" in Electricity" I love the guitar strumming and chords she hits in The Priest (LOTC) I love the way the jazzy bit of "Harry’s House" goes back into "shining hair and shining skin" And the line "with heaven full of astronauts and the Lord on death row" in The Same Situation. I love the piano playing in "Down to You" (things that you held high and told yourself were true, Lost or changing as the days come down to you) And the music intro to Harlem in Havana (TTT) (her artwork is extrodinary) Enough of my boring "i can't believe HOW GREAT she is"....i really wish she would get more credit for her work though. I hear people say "joan baez" (sorry i don't even know if thats how u spell her name??) was the best folk singer of her time and it MAKES ME SO MAD!! Why isn't joni recognised more in the music industry - mind u with the crappy non-talent thats come out of the industry, she wouldn't want to be.
