Fred rebuts:

Yes Fred, Hendrix' genius is a tough yardstick for anyone to measure
up to, but he DID have the advantage of dying early so that he didn't
have to deal with the maturation (or lack thereof) of his brilliance.
And what happened to the "Experience" after his death? And does that
mean they were never really a "Band" to begin with?
What if Joni had died after C&S? Would she be held in higher esteem
today because she departed at her commercial peak? If Jim Morrison,
Janis Joplin, & Jimi are any indication probably so. Instead, she did
not fall prey to the star-maker machinery behind the popular song and
proved herself above all who had come before or since by continuing to
expand her talents.
And speaking of talents, REM *is* loaded...all the band members,
including the departed Bill Berry, contributed songwriting talents and
also are multi-instrumentalists. At least Peter Buck & Stipe have
produced and developed other artists. I understand that as a very
talented musician yourself, you're maybe a better judge of musical
talent than I, but especially in these times where creativity and
originality are not encouraged, I see REM as a band of immense talent.
Thinking back to last week, John V. said that the drummer was a key
element in lifting a poor band to mediocrity or a mediocre band to
greatness. If this is true (and I'm not necessarily saying it is),
then what does it say that REM's drummer left and they still put out a
great record?
Just some food for thought, thanks for the respectful debate...

Except of course here in good ol' boy land, South Carolina, the only 1 of the 50
states to not observe MLK day as a statewide holiday. Instead, State employees
can observe MLK day, Robert E. Lee's birthday, Jefferson Davis' birthday,
Confederate Independence Day, or any other day of their choice.
I wish I was making this up, but it's true...ignorance generally still wins the
day here...
The good news is that our new governor Jim Hodges is taking on as his first
accomplishment the establishment of MLK day as a statewide holiday. More good
news, my son and I attended a dramatic presentation last night "Let Freedom
Ring", sort of a Ken Burns thing with dramatic speeches, diary excerpts, songs,
etc, tracing US history and southern black-white relations from the slave ships
to Brown vs. Board of Education. It was very well done & very moving.
Now if he can only do something about all the confederate flag car decals...

this is correct insofar as a 'State' holiday is concerned.
there were also objections from reactionary voices in Arizona

Bob,
simon sez, perhaps my meaning wasn't entirely clear.
when i said:
> "(in large messure) due to the tireless efforts of Stevie Wonder
> (& others), Right eventually won out over ignorance."
i was referring 'specifically' to the efforts to pass legislation
establishing a national holiday honoring Dr. King.
i am well aware of present reality in todays Amerika.
i am well aware of progress stalled and the movement backwards
initiated (primarily) by and during the Reagan/Bush administrations.
i also know that ...
> the FBI reports there have been over 50,000 hate crimes
> in the U.S. since 1990.
>
> officials say attacks today are more vicious than ever.
i am painfully aware that if Dr. King were alive today ...
he wouldn't be alive very long.
Joni herself has pointed out:
"They kill people who give hope in this culture."
Dr. King believed his role as a pastor was to "Comfort the Afflicted
and Afflict the Comfortable". this WILL get you killed.
What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore --
And then run?
Does it stink like a rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over --
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
OR DOES IT EXPLODE?

Subject: NJC: Birmingham Jail (another view)
After reading Dr. King's "Letter From A Birmingham Jail" on the JMDL... I was
reminded of
something else that I read and want to share it with you..
Two years ago, when my son was applying to college, he was tasked with writing
an essay
that would include the writings of a historical figure and "how" said writing
impacted the
life of the applicant. Here's what he wrote:
The train ride from Vienna was nice enough, munching on our picnic lunch of
crusty bread, tomatoes and cheese. The large window afforded a spectacular view
of the countryside as we rolled along on our way. As the train screeched to a
halt the few other passengers grabbed their suitcases, packages and occasional
backpack, and hurried into the lovely little village of Mauthausen. The sun was
warm, and the landscape was very picturesque.
I couldn't get the sound of the train rushing over the tracks from my head.
“Chuk-a-chuk-a-chuk-a-chuk”. A relaxing, syncopated sound? Not today. It was
an eerie and terrifying sound. I was hearing more than the sound of the train.
It was the sound of screams. Young, old, rich, poor, all screaming in a
horrific harmony. Thousands of voices that I couldn't get out of my mind. If
only it would stop! Why didn't anyone else hear it, I wondered. Don't they
know where we are?
We had no accommodations arranged for our stay. As luck would have it though,
the tavern facing the station advertised "Zimmer-frei” - rooms for rent. At the
entrance we were greeted by the aged bar owner. "Ya, ve haf goot roomz”. He
was quick to help with our bags, and recommended that we eat dinner there. "Ve
serve only da best food".
Later, at dinner in the tavern, we talked with the locals. The old men at the
bar laughed with us. Did we know Cousin Friedrich in Cleveland or the
Rheinholdt's in Toledo? Klaus wondered if we were here to join the Rhine biking
tour. “It's the lahgest undt most important event in da town" he said. "It is
ze event zat puts us on ze map". This was fun! That is, until they asked what
we were planning to do during our visit. When they heard that we had come to
see the Nazi death camp the mood changed.
“Nahting to see dere", they assured us. Minutes later the party had broken up
but Dad stayed to talk with Klaus. I stayed too. Klaus couldn't remember the
boxcars jammed with people rolling in to the station. He also didn’t remember
the files of innocent people that were marched through this two-street hamlet on
their way to the camp. He, of course, couldn’t remember any of these people
leaving. None did. With a population of 500, surely some must have seen;
perhaps they wept in silence.
Dr. King didn’t sit in silence like the people of Mauthausen. He stood up
against the discrimination that he witnessed. His two biggest disappointments
were the white moderates and the leadership of the white churches. These groups
didn’t actively support the evils that Dr. King witnessed, but their inaction
led to the same ends as giving support. They did not oppose the
“law-of-the-land”, even though the order they maintained was unjust and
inherently wrong. They obeyed the law of mankind instead of the law of God.
What would I have done? Defied the “order" and face the punishment. Would I
have prayed in the safety of my room? Courage is easy in the comfort of my
room, but not so in the streets of Birmingham or Mauthausen.
I boarded that Bavarian train with the conviction that I would not be silent.
I now sing with those voices.

It has been brought to my attention that during the course of this

It is difficult enough for me to communicate my thoughts clearly to

Just a short amendment to my previous post: I looked again, and
the forwarder of my Van posts *did* include my email address.
That's just rude. Thank goodness the members of the Van list
have been polite on their end.
I just got Public Enemy's _He Got Game_ soundtrack, which is
in parts as good as Bob Muller says it is. In listening to it I
noticed this in their song "Unstoppable":
Mad teams pourin' fire on the gasoline
The beat fiends
Feelin' like fever
I'm gettin' warm
***Chalk marks in the rainstorm***
Children of the gone
Lost and forgotten
Minds rotten
The R Kay shot 'em
Channel Zero on the TV got 'em
So my question is, had anyone heard the phrase "chalk mark in a
rainstorm" before Joni used it? Is this a saying of which I'm not
aware, or is Public Enemy indeed quoting Joni Mitchell?

Subject: Most important American band? (NJC)
If we're talking about importance (primarily being influence) and
not greatness (or quality) I have to agree with Fred that the Beach
Boys get the clear nod as America's most important non-jazz
non-classical band. _Pet Sounds_ alone is influential enough to
garner this distinction.
Next most important IMO would be Parliament/Funkadelic. Their
effect on R&B and soul has been huge, and hip-hop, if it had
happened at all, would certainly sound very different without their
influence. Not to mention their impact on non-soul rock.
Velvet Underground also have to rank way up there as the first
real major-label "alternative" band combined with their fusion of
the worlds of rock 'n' roll with the avant-garde art scene. The
Ramones fit in here somewhere, as well as the Carter Family.
R.E.M. should make the top ten, I think, mostly for the incredible
role they played in the mainstream acceptance of the indie-rock
aesthetic. I'd also look at the Beastie Boys, Public Enemy,
Husker Du, CSN (hey just because I'm not crazy about them
doesn't mean I can't see their influence), Sly and the Family
Stone, Blondie and the Ronettes. I'd probably even include
the Grateful Dead; it's impossible to deny the effect the GD
had on the way we look at rock concerts, or fandom as culture.
And of course we can't leave out the pioneering New Kids on the
Block. (Or maybe we can).
And I think the Muscle Shoals band gets the nod for most
important back-up band.

I'm on Reference and just checked all the standard phrase references and

one of the few that seemed to exist as a complement to the film and
not just an excuse to put out product. Another great example, we saw
"Waking Ned Devine" this weekend - GREAT movie + beautiful celtic
music.

Susan,
Thanks for the info on CCR. I know some of the hits and they're excellent, of
course. I guess I underestimated this band. I asked my husband (he is American
{I'm not} and significantly older than I) about them and he whistled and said
"amazing!". Though he has none of their albums in his collection, he listed
for me the string of hits. I had little idea that this band is considered so
important in American rock history. So many of you offer a wealth of knowledge
and insight to this list. I'm learning so much!

I have a theory that Kurt, Jimi and the rest of the Seattle musicmen had no
choice but to devise their unique bone and organ shattering sound to
sonically penetrate through the dense perma-cloud and precipitation covering
their native environment ;-) Personally, I love it all and am convinced it
even sounds better played full blast while barreling down a forested back
road in the rain.
I've only read snippets but would recommend reading some of Jimi's
biography - really fascinating stuff.
Enjoyed reading all the posts when I returned and special kudos to those who
contributed their dissertations on the Dead.

Hi there,
You should mark February 9 in your calendars. That's the date
for the "new" album "Torched" by Michael Hedges.
This was the album that Michael was working on at the time of
his fatal car crash well over a year ago now.
One of the highlights of "Torched" is the vocal harmony David
Crosby and Graham Nash added to the song "Spring Buds".
This session was contributed by Crosby and Nash as a parting
gift to Michael nearly a year after his passing.
Michael's long-time friend and manager Hilleary Burgess says:
"The depth of emotion was palpable from the moment they
walked into the studio. Over some fifteen years of mutual
admiration, David and Graham had developed a deep regard
for Michael, both artistically and personally, that nearly matched
his own reverence for them. They'd had Michael tour with them
as an opening act, contributing his guitar-playing and songwriting
talents to their albums, and appear with them at numerous high-
profile benefits. In turn, they sang with him on his 1990 album
"Taproot". Michael often credited David for his early awakening
to the idea of altered guitar tunings, and CSN's influence on him
was undeniable."

Take care,

Subject: Muscial Appreciation...
I know this too is also late in regards to Michael and Van, but I
happened to be perusing the Dream Theater Discussion list and by
co-incidence they too were talking about music appreciation (but in
regards to Yes)
Here's a quote that to me sums up my feelings on the subject of: What's
considered good...
"Liking and respecting can be two different things! You don't have to
like some band but you can respect their work"
To me taste is subjective. People shouldn't need convincing in order to
like an artist. I understand that Michael is looking for enlightenment
and he's genuinely sincere in regards to trying but... if Van is a
feel... you either feel it or you don't?

Just finishing reading my joniposts (and my richard thompson and peter
mulvey posts) and listening to wrnr.com when on comes "Refuge of the Road,"
immediately following a Van Morrison track of some sort. Fairly or not, I
find it hard to distinguish most of his stuff over the last 15 years.
Since I'm already here using up bandwidth, let me recommend Richard Julian's
new one, "Smash Palace." Figure this qualifies since I read something here
about his performing in the upcoming NY Joni tribute. (Oh, God, now rnr is
playing James McMurtry's "melinda." What a great station). Smash Palace
covers an incredible musical range, is brilliantly but not obtrusively
(mostly) produced, and features Richard's expressive and versatile voice,
melodic gifts, funky sensibility, story=telling talents and excellent
lyrics. The one that especially stays with me is "It's the danger of love
that puts the beat in your heart."
don't it though

I am dying being on this list!! Hearing of joni tributes that i would
just love to go to, of joni concerts here and there (and always in
America) What am i doing in Australia.....so far from all things joni.
Hi Greg from Hobart, you are so lucky to have gone to that joni concert
in Melbourne...we just have to have her back here, don't you agree!
Hey listers, will joni being doing a TTT tour...am i behind the times,
has she already toured for it?
Vanessa from Mooroolbark? Where is that Vanessa, in NSW? Have you too
seen joni in concert?
Greg, have you been able to get any joni videos? (if so what ones?) Cos
i've tried to get them thru music stores but been told its impossible,
and that the formating on US tapes is different.
To all those listers in America...be thankful you are so close to Joni,
and i hope you New Yorkers had the best nite at the tribute for all of
us who couldn't go! :) :)
