Yes, of course ... that goes without saying.
You present a strong case for REM's longevity, except I just don't agree that
they were ever that talented musically to begin with. Jimi Hendrix, whose
career was tragically cut short, is still, 30 years later, way ahead of his
time and one of the most important artists of all time.

You are in good company Marsha! I never bought one either and can't think of what
they did either-except for Yesterday which i love.

Quite similar to the threads we have on the baseball discussion list. Who
would you rather have, Don Sutton, slightly better than average for a long
time, or Sandy Koufax, one of the best ever but only for six years?

re: Michael Paz' info re Joe Mooney
Thanks for the info. Glad to stand corrected. Ahhhhh, head lining at a
recording studio - every performer's dream! I relied solely on memory of a
brief introduction made before his performance. I do recall his saying that
he was staying on Pine Island (near Ft. Myers) and that he is to play here
locally - I'll keep my eye peeled. Haven't heard anything he's recorded but a
friend picked up his CD at the show. The audience was sure worked up - great
energy. You're so lucky to have all that within earshot!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
(Lyrics & music by Stevie Wonder)
You know it doesn't make much sense
There ought to be a law against
Anyone who takes offense
At a day in your celebration
'Cause we all know in our minds
That there ought to be a time
That we can set aside
To show just how much we love you
And I'm sure you would agree
It couldn't fit more perfectly
Than to have a world party on the day you came to be
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
I just never understood
How a man who died for good
Could not have a day that would
Be set aside for his recognition
Because it should never be
Just because some cannot see
The dream as clear as he
that they should make it become an illusion
And we all know everything
That he stood for time will bring
For in peace our hearts will sing
Thanks to MARTIN LUTHER KING
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Why has there never been a holiday
Where peace is celebrated
all throughout the world
The time is overdue
For people like me and you
Who know the way to truth
Is love and unity to all God's children
It should never be a great event
And the whole day should be spent
In full remembrance
Of those who lived and died for the oneness of all people
So let us all begin
We know that love can win
Let it out don't hold it in
Sing it loud as you can
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
Ooh yeah
Happy birthday...
We know the key to unify all people
Is in the dream that you had so long ago
That lives in all of the hearts of people
That believe in unity
We'll make the dream become a reality
I know we will
Because our hearts tell us so
from the album "Hotter Than July."

I was listening to a program on our local NPR station Saturday night
called 'The Swing Years and Beyond' and they played the entire song 'I's
a Muggin'. I meant to write down the name of the artist performing it
but got distracted and cant' remember the name. Was anyone else aware
that that little snippet from 'Mingus' that Joni sings with the man was
part of an actual song?

I was amazed when I read some transcripts from the pre-60's
African-American verbal pastime called "playing the dozens." It's so
much like rap, even the profanity! If you want, I'll post some excerpts
from "The Signifying Monkey" or "The Titanic."
Mark K. now writes:
By request, here's the SM. Signifying in this context means a trickster,
one who cuts up, messes around, lies, jests, but is clever too. If anyone
wants to know, I can get more info. about where this is from, what year it
was recorded, who "rapped" it. It's probably on some old Library of
Congress recording. This isn't "playing the dozens," which is when two or
more persons compete to see who can out-insult the other(s), but it's a
similar kind of "rap" made up to amuse others and outdo other people's
"raps."
Mark K.
Signifying Monkey
Say deep down in the jungle in the coconut grove
lay the Signifying Monkey in his one-button roll.
Now the hat he wore was on the Esquire fold,
his shoes was on a triple-A last.
You could tell that he was a pimping motherfucker by the way his hair was
gassed.
Now the Signifying Monkey told the big bad Lion one day,
said, "Jack, there's a bad motherfucker lyin' down your way."
He said, "And the way he talked about you, I know it ain't right,
when y'all meet, gonna be a hell of a fight."
He said, "You know the other day down on the ditch
he called your mother a no-good bitch."
The Lion jumped back with a mighty roar,
his tail stuck out like a forty-four,
he breezed down through the jungle in a hell of a breeze,
knockin' giraffes to their knees.
He run up on Brother Elephant down under the trees, just about asleep,
he said, "You big bad motherfucker, it's goin' be you or me."
The Elephant looked at him out a the corner of his eyes,
said, "Why don't you go on and pick on somebody your size?"
But the Lion jumped back and made a pass
and the Elephant knocked him dead on his ass
They fought all night and they fought all day,
and I don't see how in the hell that Lion got away.
Early next mornin', more dead than alive,
he crawled back to his tree and there lay Brother Monkey with his
signifyin'.
He said, "Now look at you, talking about you the kind of the jungle, aint'
that a bitch?
You face is fucked up like the seven-year itch."
He said, "I," say, "I didn't get beat."
The Monkey said, "You a lyin motherfucker," said, "you [I] had a ringside
seat."
He said, "Shut up, motherfucker, and don't you roar,
if you do I'll jump down and kick your ass some more."
The Monkey got frantic and went jumpin' up and down,
both feet missed the limb and his ass hit the ground.
Like a boom a lightnin' from a streak a heat,
the Lion was on him with all four feet.
The Monkey said, "I know you think you raisin' hell,
but everybody seen me when I slipped and fell.
But if you let me get my nuts up out of this sand
I'll fight you just like a natural man."
He said, "And if you even give me a bid,"
say, "I'll whip your ass worse than that Elephant did."
The Lion jumped back and said, "Well, be ready, motherfucker, when I count
to three,"
but the Monkey tore his ass back up that same damned tree.
He said, "Well, Brother Lion, the day have come at last,
that I have found a limb to fit your ass."
He said, "You might as well stop, there ain't no use a tryin',
because no motherfucker is gonna stop me from signifyin'."

Hi all,
This is my first post to the list. I'm Greg from Hobart, Tasmania,
Australia.
Hi to Vanessa from Mooroolbark. I know what you mean about the scarcity
of international tours. However, I did get to make it a priority to fly
over to Melbourne for Joni's concert at the St. Kilda Palais in the
early 80's when she toured for the Wild Things Run Fast album.
My greatest memory of the concert was jumping down into the orchestra
pit and taking lots of great slides of Joni up close. She could see I
was after a particular shot and gave me a beautiful deliberate pose -
just for me!! Sigh, sigh!! The bit that really melted my heart were
some longing glances my way during the Unchained Melody bit of Chinese
Cafe. I went all weak at the knees. I was the only one up real close
near the piano and within easy sight. It was wonderful. Oh, and the
photos came out brilliantly!!
Hi also to Angela Takats from Sydney. Any other Aussies on this list?
Also, does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Shadows & Light
video?
Thanks
Greg Cupit, Hobart, Tasmania (the island down under the land down under)
