I haven't really given it much thought, but Carly Simon would do an
interesting "Car on the Hill", Paul Simon would do a good "Don't
interupt the sorrow", and I think that Chrissie Hynde would do a good
job at "Refuge of the Roads". And, to dream a little, I for some
totally bizarre reason can picture Simple Minds doing "Dreamland", Janet
Jackson doing "Morning Morgantown", JT and Carolle King doing "Good
Friends", Alanis doing "the Gallery" or "Concersation", Chris Isaak
doing "Blue", and Prince doing "Three Great Stimulants". LOL, maybe I
am overtired, but I think it would all sound great at the moment! Oh
ya, and Madonna doing "Court and Spark"!

Urge For Going is the first track from Joni's "hits" CD. It's never

Does anyone think that the hits CD has actually killed off her catalog
sales? Does anyone know her sales figures?

Hey Lori,
The latest RS has an article "Woodstock Turns 30", which says:
1. Woodstock '99 will feature 8 days of concerts split between NY and Austria,
possibly a third set in Brazil.
2. The European shows in Weiner-Neustadt, Austria will feature approx. 100
acts from July 14-18. (Marian makes her star-turning performance....?)
3. In the U.S. negotiations are being held with Saugerties, NY for July 23-25.
4. No performers are being announced as yet. "There are some obvious choices.
We're not going to have any three-timers, though. We don't want this becoming
a nostalgia event", quote from John Scher, a co-promoter of the 25-anniversary
event.
Hope that helps...ask and ye shall receive :~)

We're back to Saugerties, again? How odd. That is not the location for the
original Woodstock; Bethel is. I wonder what the Gerry Foundation (who
purchased Yasgur's Farm and produced last year's event) has to say about it?

No need to mention names but I recently received a letter addressed to me only

spelled it "scarlet" which is the correct spelling for the color name, but not
for the proper noun. I just want to ask: what is the purpose of this list? Is
it to stimulate discussion and share ideas or is to correct and criticize the
opinions and ideas of others? I'm new to this list only in that I've only
recently begun posting. One of the reasons I've refrained was because of some
of the snobbishness I see exhibited in some letters in reaction to perfectly
innocent and irrelevant matters. English is my third language, so I apologize
if sometimes my spelling and grammar, etc., are not what they should be. I'm
afraid the spell check failed me on this one! Thank you, though, to those
folks who have responded to my postings respectfully. I appreciate it and I'm

I'm delurking. I've been reading this mail group for a few months now with
no posts. I cannot resist telling how I've come to reappreciate Joni now,
twelve or so years after my initial exposure. Please bear with me, and I
know you will--I've come to see that all of you are warm and friendly folk.
When I was a freshman in high school I decided I liked "folk" music. Bless
my brother, who decided that I should listen to Joni. He bought me Blue on
vinyl. I 'bout wore it out playing it so... I then went on a journey to
acquire all of Joni's stuff on vinyl--original vinyl. Remember now, this
was 1986 or thereabouts, so it was quite a search. I was successful and
built my collection. The records were well worn and, in my opinion,
enhanced by the pops and crackles and imperfections that someone wore into
them because they loved her, too.
I went to college and didn't bring my vinyl Joni collection because I had
dubbed all the records onto tapes for ease of packing and transportation
(and so my precious collection would not be damaged). For some reason,
though, I got caught up in other music in school and Joni went by the
wayside. Several moves over the past five years left my dubbed tapes boxed
up and never unpacked. I always picked up the new releases (Night Ride,
Turbulent Indigo, etc.), but the early albums were silenced.
Then, in November, my partner surprised me. I came home from a long day
and she had two tickets which she presented with a flourish--for Joni and
Bob at Georgia Tech. I LOST IT! We went to the concert and my interest in
Joni was truly reignited. To see her after so many years of
listening...knowing that she never went on tour and that I probably
wouldn't see her...I was truly aware of the honor.
Shortly thereafter I searched Joni on the web and found this group and have
been listening to the more recent CD's incessantly. The other day I went
to the record store to get TTT, but came out with TTT, Blue, and For the
Roses, and almost bought four others before I found my self-control. I sat
in my car outside the record store and popped For the Roses in...I was
transfixed. I was amazed at the clarity and complexity that was revealed
to me for the first time in this digital form... People were waiting for
my parking spot, but I couldn't move.
I am continually amazed at how much the experiences from my adolescence
shape my adulthood, and Joni was a key player in my teen years. To listen
to her music now, as an adult, is a wonderful but eerie experience. I am
finding that I am reflecting much more deeply on my teen years (and am
really glad they're over), but also paying more attention to the here and
now in light of these memories. And to add to this, I'm a high school
teacher, so I'm developing a different sensitivity to my own students'
experiences right now.
Just thought I'd share...

Hello everyone -
Though I have communicated with people from this list, this is my first
post and ends my status as a lurker!
Last night a friend of mine played a CD for me called For Free. It's all
Joni, but it's a concert she gave "in harmony" with James Taylor in London
in 1970. It includes a song I have never heard her sing called Rainy Day
Man -- it's not the same as that wonderful Bonnie Raitt song where she
"looks up her rainy day man." It also includes a version of River which
she says is a song she wrote "about a year ago". It's a pretty different
version. One of the things I liked about this disc is that it includes all
of her talking between songs as she re-tunes her guitar or switches to
dulcimer or piano. I'm so used to hearing Joni speaking in such a deep
voice now -- on this record her voice is so high and soft. There was a
good picture inside too, of her playing guitar on the grass with David
Crosby in the background and someone nearby with long hair and a moustache
who looks familiar -- any ideas? Who wrote Rainy Day Man?
I think this CD must be a boot leg, but the sound quality was really pretty
good, and I loved the version of That Song About the Midway. I'm getting
a tape of it made. And as for Bonnie Raitt, I always thought her version
of Midway is the one and only Joni song done better by someone other than
its author. As a kid I loved Judy Collins singing Both Sides Now and and
CSNY's powerful version of Woodstock, but the originals still have the real
power.
I also finished reading the Brian Hinton book recently, and I know there
are inaccuracies and speculation in it, but it was very compelling. We
will never know the real story of Joni until she writes it herself. One of
the things this book reminds me of is what an amazing life Joni has lead.
I find my own life to have been pretty interesting (and getting ready to
become more interesting yet) but what an amazing existence this woman has
had, what an incredible cast of characters in her narrative. Talk about
the road less traveled ...
Some of Hinton's interpretations of her songs are interesting and
insightful, others are wrong, and gratefully, he admits (as I will now)
that some of those songs are just impenetrable -- very much up for
interpretation. Some of them, like Little Green, made sense after certain
facts came to life. Other Joni songs have always been beautiful to me and
had a certain unconscious power, an intriguing quality in their lack of an
easy interpretation. Don't Interrupt the Sorrow would be one, and The
Three Great Stimulants is another.
And as for DED, I have been playing it every day for a couple of months now
since I got it "back" on CD. I love this album, regardless that it seems
very much a product of the Eighties and is somewhat dated in its political
material. It still has some wonderful, original music and is largely
lacking in melancholy. I always have loved Joni's happy songs and her
angry songs too.
It's been great to read your posts! Other than my sister Jill on this
list, I know few others with a real jones for Joni. Some of my friends
confuse her with Janis Ian or think she was a protest singer back in the
Sixties. Most of my male friends are gay, like I am, and they are into
all the usual gay divas. It's my straight buddies, many of them musicians,
who love and respect Joni.

Open, honest communication of ideas, thoughts, and opinions - free of
intimidation - is what we strive for on this list. As with any community,
some people tend to get a bit uppity. But overall, I think you will find
that the vast majority of us on the list adopt a "live and let live"

I've only been on the list a couple months, so maybe this topic has been
covered. I noticed some errors in Hinton's book, too, and considered
contacting him. I wonder if anyone on the list has done this or made a list of
the errors? For instance, he states that Joni played with Albert King at the
Bread and Roses benefit in Berkeley 1980, but it was BB King (who, with his
band, horribly disfigured "Coyote"). She also did a stunning duet with Herbie
Hancock at the grand piano, "Sweet Sucker Dance" that was better than the
original, as well as introducing songs that she was about to release on WTRF,
all of which Hinton does not mention.
His song interpretations are at times interesting and illuminating, other times
totally off ("Not To Blame" is obviously directed at Jackson Browne, not OJ
Simpson, for instance)
BTW welcome out of the lurk!

Hey there!
It sounds like he CD is a bootleg of a joint BBC concert between James
Taylor and Joni. James wrote Rainy Day Man, he's the guy with long hair and
mustache. I personally LOVE that bootleg. I was surprised at hearing her
voice, too, since I had only heard her "more mature" voice. if it's the
same bootleg I'm thinking of, it also has the duet between Joni and James
doing "You Can Close Your Eyes," probably my favorite song on the disc right
now. The version of "Circle Game," with Jt singing backup is pretty good,
too, and nice and LONG.

RAINY DAY MAN
What good is that happy life?
All you wanted from the start
was to cry.
It looks like another fall,
your friends , they don't seem to help at all.
If you're feeling cold and small.
Call on your rainy day man.
It does you no good to pretend, child.
You made a hole much too big to mend, now
When it looks like you'll lose again, my frield.
Look up your rainy day man.
Rainy day man, he don;'t like sunshine
He don't chase rainbows,
he don't need good times
Gray days roll in,
empty feelings,
now you need him.
All those noble thoughts, they don't belong.
You can't the truth with a happy song.
Since you knew where you stood all along.
Go look up your rainy day man.
Now simple pleasures all evade you.
Storebought treasures?
None can save you (no how)
Look for signs to ease the pain,
ask again, child, pray for rain.
It looks like another fall.
Your good friends,
they don't seem to help at all.
When you're feeling kind of cold and small,
time to look up your rainy day man.
All you got to do
is look up your rainy day man.

the same one with "Carolina On My Mind" (produced by the OTHER Paul, the
cutest Beatle). He then re-recorded it on "Flag" in the late seventies.
Bonnie R. also does a great version of the tune...

Carrie, Great Post! Thanks for de-lurking...this moment above is great and one

Yes, I was just listening to her version from "Streetlights" along with Joni's
"That Song About the Midway" and John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery."

Congrats to you too, for coming out of the shadows and into the light! And for
the record, I am 100% in agreement with your opinion of "Midway".

a) "Urge for Going" covers. Tom Rush's is still nearest and dearest to my
heart, but I am sometimes ravished, as well, by Mary Black's. Although
slightly over-produced for my taste, her vocal is haunting and affecting.
She really puts the lyric across.
b) I was glad to see the recent mention of Bonnie Raitt's wonderful
recording of "Midway." I'll go along with the endorsements. However, this
leads me to the third thread, that of male vocalists for a Joni Tribute
album. Hang on, this is scary.
c) Tom Waits could do a killer "over the top" rendition of "Midway."
Honest to God, I can just hear it. I'm not sure I'd Like it, but I'd sure
listen to it.

You may not like it at first, but, after all , Tom Waits is an acquired
taste...I think this idea is fabulous!

Hello All-
Ok I'm busted I have been lurking around mostly catching a little read here
and there and have not posted lately. Alot of you are in my thoughts though
especially since for the past few days I have been working with Levon Helm. My
company is installing a sound system in his new Club here and he was a guest
on Louisiana JukeBox this past Thursday night. The Band (yes with Danko and
all except Robbie of course played a couple of times over last week end and
Garth, Danko, and Levon have all played solo a few gigs as well. Mavis Staples
was suppose to be here this past week end but she got snowed in Chicago (she
is being rescheduled for around Jazz Fest time). Levon had surgery on his
throat for cancer and is not singing that well these days, but he is going to
start a therapy program and hopefully he will improve. He was pretty damn good
singing only 3 songs on the show (Ophelia, The Weight, + Rag Mama Rag) It was
pretty darn cool. I went to the club after I got Thursday and he bought me a
Martini (Kakki) and thanked me for a great show. In further news: Louisiana
Jukebox is now on Channel 15 in Austin, Texas on tape delay Saturday Nights
(around 7pm I think). One more great music town added to our list.
As far as songs that make/made me cry:
Two Grey Rooms-JM
For The Roses-JM
Somewhere Over The Rainbow-JG
You Can Close Your Eyes-JT
Cherokee Louise-JM
Chinese Cafe-JM
Hold ON-SM
Sons and Daughters-Neville Bros.
I am off to sleepytown. Hope to write more tomorrow.
Peace and blessings,
Paz

I'm color-deficient to red, so I don't know one Scarlett from another.

Uh oh, if it wasn't you Paul, then we may be dealing with roving underground
agents! Better stay in the slow lane for now and watch our rear view
mirrors.
