Knopfler's guitar style and vocal style would work just fine on many a Joni tune - my first thought was on "Cotton Ave.", especially the intro with his airy but concise guitar runs. "Slouching" was another that came to mind. I was lucky back in the late 70's to see Dire Straits on their first US tour in Greensboro, NC. They weren't that well known at the time, "Sultans of Swing" was about all we heard except for a live tape one of my roommates had (Which I dubbed and still have btw...). Anyway, we were right up front, about an arm's length from Knopfler - what a musician! He pulled and wrestled every note out of that thing, and worked up a healthy sweat in the process. The headband he wore was definitely for a reason... Previous to PFM, I could not have named a >Burt Bachrach (sp?) song. His music never entered my life. Perhaps it's my >age. I have only a very minor appreciation for the songs on PFM. My reaction was kind of the opposite ... I've always been an Elvis fan and a Bacharach fan. Bacharach has written some of the most beautiful, melodically and harmonically complex, sophisticated, soulful, idiosyncratic pop songs of all time. And as evidenced on Painted From Memory, he has not lost his touch one bit ... in fact, I can hardly listen to the album without the tunes getting obsessively stuck in my head for days after. However, even though Elvis' lyrics are wonderfully poignant, and he is a passionate and soulful singer, he is totally the wrong singer for these songs. Bacharach's tunes are so difficult they require a singer who can sing them effortlessly; in Costello's renditions one is all too aware of the effort ... the pitchy intonation lapses, the excessive gliding and swooping up to and down from notes, the excessive vibrato and over-the-top bravura. But ... BUT!! ... the songs are so gorgeous (as are the arrangements) that I still feel compelled to listen; songs just don't get any better than "God Give Me Strength," "This House Is Empty Now," and "I Still Have That Other Girl." Which brings me to Grace Of My Heart, which I just saw yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed. Maybe not a great film, but really very good; good cast, great songs, and Illeana Douglas was superb. And Kristen Vigard, who sang as the voice of the Illeana character (Edna/Denise) is a real find ... her singing absolutely killed me. Her version of God Give Me Strength, sung with only piano accompaniment (although we subsequently hear a snippet of the produced version) is fantastic and far superior, in my view, to Elvis' performance (I *really* wish they had included her version on the soundtrack album ... does anyone know if it's been released anywhere else by her? I'd pay good money for it). Vigard's rendition is everything Elvis' is not -- the effortless grace, the understated passion, the near perfect execution of the music, and the flawless emotional tone had me in tears. As did her performance of the beautiful final song, A Boat On The Sea (which is a dead ringer for a piano based For The Roses-period Joni tune, written by Larry Klein, who, after should know). If you ask me (did anyone?), Vigard should record those Bacharach/Costello tunes. Now that would be something. - -Fred ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 09 Jan 1999 15:42:25 -0800 From: Travis Moser Subject: Re: Male singers for tribute album IVPAUL42@aol.com wrote: > > How about someone like Al Jerreau doing "Goodbye Prok Pie Hat"? > > Paul I > How about Paul Simon on something like 'Free Man in Paris' or 'Refuge of the Roads'?
