I have a couple of Bjork albums. A few of the cuts are striking, but I tire of them quickly. I have also noticed that she doesn't really sing. One idea that has struck me is that much of pop music is about cult of personality. I have to admit that though I love Joni's music and lyrics, I was in love when I read her interviews. I probably wouldn't be such a fan if I wasn't so attracted to her personality and beliefs. In this light, I will say that I find Bjork to be a profoundly interesting personality. She's sexy, spontaneous, highly creative, funny, and seems to be totally original. I found a Bjork website with lots of quotes and interviews. She weaves beautiful storys that you have to read to appreciate. jOhn ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Jan 1999 01:45:54 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Male singers for tribute album Fred wrote: >I don't have specific song suggestions, but any suitable song from the first >nine studio albums (STAS-DJRD) would do nicely as sung by any or all of the >following singers: James Taylor, Sting, Peter Gabriel, Prince, Graham Nash, >David Crosby, Tom Rush, Seal, and Milton Nascimento. "Beau monde met demimonde at the third annual holiday party for CRIA (Community Research Initiative on AIDS), hosted by Carolina and Reinaldo Herrera, Bob Colacello, Karol DeWulf Nickell, and president Ross Bleckner, who opened his Tribeca home for the event. After dinner (the debut effort of Mortimer's new catering business), 120 guests, including Judy and Samuel Peabody and Barbara de Kwiakowski, were soon reminded they were way below 14th Street by performance artist John Kelly, who transfixed benefactors with his impersonation of Joni Mitchell." Nicknames: Debs (but never, ever, Debbie), Shea, Summer (from roommates in Massachusetts because I could not wait until the long northern winter was over; LOVE that summer sun, even though I can only be in it for about 30 seconds before turning red -- I hate that!) 3. Hometown: Vienna, Virginia; now New York City 4. School: BFA UMass/Amherst; now at Pratt learning HTML, Java, etc (another way to make some money? new art form? don't know yet) 5. Bacon bits or croutons: croutons (flour, grease, salt, yummy) 6. Favorite salad dressing: Newman's Own Olive Oil and Vinegar (with no sugar, which is VERY hard to find) 7. What do you drink: iced tea, herbal teas, espresso in the morning 8. What type of deodorant do you use: the kind that smells "cool and clear" (know it when I see it at the store; doesn't seem worth a trip to the bathroom right now just to get the brand name; OK?) 9. Favorite shampoo: L'Oreal 10. Favorite Color(s): periwinkle (that color that looks both blue and purple); and very deep teal (that color that looks both blue and green); didn't know women and men see it differently. 11. One pillow or two: 2 artificial-filling non-allergic things that I fight with. 12. Pets: None (keep talking myself out of going to the animal shelter to get two kittens; picture an orange cat and a black & white one running around. I'd like that. Then I decide to get a puppy so they can all grow up together and be pals; by now in my fantasy it's feeling really crowded in my little apartment and I really don't have the time for walking and training a puppy, do I?; so I set the trip to the animal shelter aside for awhile, again) 13. Favorite Movie(s): Peter Weir's The Last Wave and Witness stick in my mind; their clash of cultures theme intrigues me. And, Seven Years in Tibet and Kundun. 14. Favorite Types of Music: Joni's always; her poetic lyrics captured me long ago; even TTT has some jewels ("clinging like fire to fuel" -- she's a genius with metaphors). Also, folk music from the Andes is a favorite, very haunting. For a while I worked in midtown Manhattan on Sundays, and a band would play that music all day. Made my opera-loving co-worker nuts, but I loved it, especially the way the sounds echoed and seemed to get into every nook and cranny of NY's artificial canyons; it was one of the few sounds to get into the skyscraper I was in 15. Hobbies: starting yoga; singing soprano in the choir (sometimes we're upstairs) 16. Dream Car: a blue one, with an always-ready-to-drive chauffeur, privacy in the back and a good sound system. 17. Type of car you drive: no driving, just as passenger -- NYC taxi, bus or subway depending on where I'm going and time of day, time of year 18. Word or phrase you overuse: Enough, already! (learned that one here in NY); also am saying oomph a lot lately (which my 8-yr old niece pointed out during my Christmas visit), as in "add some oopmh to ...." 19. Favorite food: Stews with bread; and soups with crunchy crackers 20. Piercings or tattoos: pierced earlobes, which was done when I turned 16 as some old-fashioned rite of passage. Only time I've ever fainted was when my second ear, the left one, was pierced (yeah, I know, what a wimp) so don't think I'll be getting any more piercings. Am curious about those henna tattoos... 21. Do you get along with your parents: in short visits, yes 22. Favorite town to chill in: Paris (have visited; would love to live there) 23. Favorite ice cream: Used up my lifetime supply of ice cream in the few years after I quit smoking, so now try to stay away 24. Favorite soda: diet pepsi 25. What's your bedtime: 3 to 5 a.m. 26. Adidas, Nike, or Reebok: don't know; whatever fits me the best 27. Favorite perfume/cologne: Most perfumes make my eyes water (again, I know, phew, what a wimp), so am stuck with hand creams. Favorite is Sunriders Oi-Lin Lotion. 28. Favorite song at the moment: Let the wind carry me 29. Favorite website: the Joni ones; museum ones; www.gamelan.com (with more than you want to know about Java) 30. Favorite subjects in school: figure drawing and color theory 31. Least favorite subject: gym, although learning square dancing was fun (yeah, that's what we did in Virginia when I was a kid) 32. Favorite sport to watch: Baseball; figure skating (I love that swooshing sound their skates make on the ice) 33. Most humiliating moment: Can't remember (no, really!) 34. Kraziest or silliest person you know: Everyone except me (does that mean something?) 35. Favorite holiday(s): Thanksgiving 36. Favorite books: of all time -- Les Miserables and To Kill a Mockingbird; now -- English murder mysteries 37. It's incredible. He's mentioned Ani DiFranco as a business/political inspiration often in the past couple of years; it's clear on _The Truth_ that he's been listening to her records as well. <<>> Sorry, but the one "instrument" he's ever tried and failed at in my opinion is rapping. His flow sucks, and so do his rhymes. Comparing him to P and Puff isn't really fair, because they suck too. They may sell a lot of records, but neither critics nor the hip-hop community regard either of them as exemplars of the genre. <<>> _Car Wheels_ did get a nomination for best Contemporary Folk album, though I do agree that it deserved a nomination for Album of the Year as well. Lauryn Hill HAS to win because she sold a lot AND topped every major year-end list--_Rolling Stone_, _Spin_, _Entertainment Weekly_, _USA Today_. Now I know that these big media dudes are just part of the same hype machine, but I even saw Lauryn in the year-end best lists of on-line indie rock zines, for goddess' sake! At the very least she deserves a nomination. The Grammies are VERY slowly getting better IMO. Of the five nominees for Album of the Year, three (Lauryn, Madonna, and Garbage) actually produced quality work. That neither Celine nor the Titanic soundtrack got nominated in this category is a small miracle. They still have a way to go, but I give the Grammies credit for coming along. <<>> So you don't get rap. Guess you can relate to how your parent's generation felt during rock now. As far as I'm concerned, 75% of the hippie-shit (ohmigod did I just say that? ;-) ) that gets bandied about as the best of all time on this list is among the most nauseating stuff I've ever heard. Okay, so she may not have a voice like Joni's and maybe she's not an incredible vocalist, but all you have to do is listen to the music and the arrangements of her songs to realize her genious. On her last album, "Homogenic" (her best by far), she mixed beautiful string arrangements with electronic beats and bases. I know that's been done before, but it's the way she does it that's so special. You all realize that SHE is the one who got Madonna going on her whole "techno" thing for "Ray of Light" (a good album.. but). I was glad for the reprieve to keep my track record going. I wasn't able to get a copy in my hands until the 1st week of Oct. IMO since Joni's stuff takes some time to truly appreciate it would only make since to move the release to just past the cut-off to give it a better chance to be valued for the the wonderful work it is. How does one go about finding out if TTT was actually considered by the Grammy guys? This logic is the only way I can comprehend Joni & TTT being totally out of the Grammy loop! For the Dear Prudence tuning, take the low E down to a D and that's it. Julia is played in standard tuning - if you're interested in the tablature, take a look at : www.ph.ed.ac.uk/~haw/music/tabfiles.html Blackbird is the only one I'm not 100% sure about. It can be played in standard tuning, but there are a couple of stretches. I always play it in a different tuning - just take the A string down to a G, and that's it. The whole song is played using the open 3rd string (G) with notes on the 5th and 2nd strings, e.g for the intro try: x0x00x x2x01x x4x03x x 12 x 0 12 x Actually, now I think about it, there are one or two notes on the D and E strings, but 95% is played using just strings 5, 3 and 2. I can't think of any other tracks that also use open tunings. I don't think the Beatles got into tunings much, apart from the occasional dropped D like for Dear Prudence.
