But I DO have to react to your statement above. Whatever you want to call him, his output in the 90's has been tremendous! I don't even have all of what he's done this decade, but I do have "The Gold Experience", a funky, fascinating concept with his typical mix, some soft-core songs, some hard-core funk, soul, etc. Then his masterpiece of the decade IMO, "Emancipation", a 3-disc tour de force, 3 hours of tunes featuring the past, present & future of soul/R&B. The first two discs have nary a sour note and besides his own originals, guaranteed to get you out of your seat and groovin', plus his takes on the old Stylistics "Betcha By Golly Wow" and "I Can't Make You Love Me" which improves upon the Bonnie Raitt version. Well, I could go on & on about this set but I also want to mention "Crystal Ball", a 4-CD set which sort of cleared the shelves of formerly unreleased stuff but also included a beautiful acoustic disc which by itself is worth the price of admission. One song, Circle of Amour, references "The Circle Game" and even sounds like a Joni tune, and we all know Joni is a strong influence on Prince. This set also features some smokin' pure blues and shows a new side of this multi-talented musical genius. And again, I'm not even mentioning his most recent output! I'll bet the artists who can match the depth and breadth of his 90's work are few & far between. And like the anti-pop artist he is, he's NOT interested in returning to his old stuff, but instead is always looking ahead... <> Well, at least you admit it, but don't feel badly...Prince also has lashed out at the music biz and attempts to handle his own marketing/packaging/commercial aspects of his art, so the huge media jobs we saw with 1999 & Purple Rain didn't happen with these 90's packages. Plus, he, like Hendrix, like Sly & The Family Stone, like Living Colour, REFUSES to let the industry shape his sound - "You're black, you have to be doing hip-hop & rap now". Getting back to the "Emancipation" project, he shows how he can hip-hop & rap with the best of them and even beat them at their own game, bringing a melody and an lyrical originality to the work that the Master P's and Puff Daddy's could NEVER conceive of. Again, I'm not criticizing, I'm trying to enlighten, or at least voice my opinion... Joni's already won a Grammy, so she's done (in their opinion). Dylan took it last year (and deservedly so), so this year, like Titanic, it's time to reward not the ARTISTIC successes but the COMMERCIAL successes. When the two intersect, ala Bonnie Raitt, everyone's happy. But that doesn't happen often, so they have to reward different things each year. Now that they've built up artistic credibility, in their eyes anyway, it's time to reward the companies that market and sell the smash hits to keep THEM happy. The larger travesty IMO was the fact that "Car Wheels" didn't get a nomination for album (Lucinda did get a song nominated, at least) So don't look for many artistic awards this year - Lauryn Hill HAS to win big because Rap/Hip-hop is what sold in '98 and they have to reward that to encourage the lemmings to keep buying product. P.S. I'm not knocking "Miseducation", it's not bad but in the rap world, so much is crap that when one comes out that's LISTENABLE it shines like a diamond in a coal pile... Bob M. 'okay, that would be wierd.' But after going home and immersing myself in the song, it began to make sense. And then it began to seem inspired -- and eventually a brilliant choice. Compare the rhythmic guitar figures to "Waiting On A Friend" ... throw in the fact that Richards is no stranger to open tunings, and top it off with that kind of 'black crow' raggedness that typifies his style and an interesting picture starts to emerge. The subdued nonchalance of the drumming on this song is pure Charlie Watts, and once he puts that off-the-hi-hat twist of his on it, the song will start to develop an interesting pulse -- more driving than lilting ... Daryl Jones on bass wouldn't be my first choice, but I think he's got the chops to follow Watts' lead on this one. Afterall, it's not like he's got to throw a Jaco drag ... ;-) Last but not least, the Jagger vocals. This is where I'm sure the majority of us really feel like a cat that's been stroked backwards. But if you think about it, in a sort of "You Can't Always Get What You Want" or "Beast of Burden" sort of way, that puckish falsetto of his would fit 'cbs&sf' like a glove. So now that I've gone around the block, I'll come to the front door and say that I'd really like to hear this rendition, and hope that the boys say "hell yes!" Even when all the critics spoke of how brilliant it was, I was stuck listening over and over again, trying to find what I was missing. Then it hit me: To me, and I stress that it's a pesonal thing, it seemed like he was too obsessed at trying to be art that I didn't hear much humanity. Like Sinatra, he seemed to wrapped up in himself, and the artist is always, to me, a large part of his/her work. If I can't connect with the painter, or songwriter, or the astrophysicist, then I can't see how brilliant the work is. Brilliance isn't the only criteria, either. From _LOTC_ in 1970 through _DJRD_ in 1977, Joni recorded seven studio albums of almost unimpeachably high quality, with no less than three (OK, maybe four) all-time classics. Both are clearly brilliant. Why? Because almost instinctively they create things beyond comprehension, without apparent effort. The way Aretha makes a lyric mean 20 things at once, the way Stevie Wonder poured melodies onto paper in the mid-'70s, the way Prince destroys any instrument he pleases, the way Joni constructs symphonies with the strum of a guitar--and most importantly, the way all of these do what they do so naturally, so uncalculatedly--that's what I call brilliance. It's easy within the cloistered confines of jmdl to feel as if everybody knows Joni and her work, but unfortunately it ain't so. I'm sure that no one connected with the 60 Minutes production knew of Joni's song. Say it out loud and proud, brother. I often half-joke about having accepted James Taylor as my personal savior (especially fitting now that James sang the part of God in Randy Newman's "Faust"). It doesn't get any better for me (as good, yes, but not better). I disagree that other singers are better equipped to sing his songs; I think he's a virtuoso singer -- his tone, phrasing, intonation, rhythmic feel, and improvisational skills are as good as it gets. I even prefer many of his cover versions to the originals. Those BBC tapes are sublime, and again I wonder when they will officially be released. Joni sings on a couple of James' albums, and he sings on some of hers, and it's all just as superfine as it can be. Joni and James are Queen and King Of Mind Beauty. - -Fred ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Jan 1999 22:25:48 EST From: Ginamu@aol.com Subject: Re: Profiles (NJC) Hey Fred...I am a big Leonard Cohen fan also!! I'm launching Part 2 of the interview today, and you can visit at this address: (http://www.JoniMitchell.com/TRush98B.html) On Monday morning I'll be having what will hopefully be my final surgery. As I've mentioned, my scans look clear of the tumour, and that's a good indication that the chemotherapy and radiation treatments have been successful. Also, just yesterday I got back the results of a few biopsies taken during a recent internal exam and they were all free of any cancer. So I go into the hospital with all signs pointing towards a positive resolution of my condition. I'm definitely not looking forward to spending a week in the hospital (it's sooo tedious), but this could be the end of my ordeal and I need to invest all my energies towards that goal. With that in mind, I'm sure that you'll understand when I say that this will probably be my last post for awhile. Once again, I have a good friend who'll be staying at my place to water the plants, etc. (Thanks, Buddy!), my best friend, Jim Johanson (you can reach him and me at: trudelusns@aol.com), will be updating the homepage with information on my progress, and Leslie Mixon will pass on this information directly to the discussion list. Wish me luck, folks! Be well and I'll talk to you all again soon.
