say, "So, you're bi?" And my answer is, "no." And then they say, "what?"
and I say, "I'm me." and then they say, "You must be either gay, straight,
or bi."
And then I say "Why?" and they say "because."
I've been accused by gays of sitting on the fence (Ouch! the fence, I mean,
not the comment) and by straight people of straddling a line.
I've been ostracized by lesbian friends when they founud out I was dating a
man (just like Chasing Amy", except not quite so subtle.)
I've even been told by gay men that I was straight, no matter what I think.
I'm here to make the point that gay people can be (and, in my
experience, have been) just as intolerant and prejudicial as
the fundamentalist Christians I know. It doesn't matter who you fuck.
Gay people have NO monopoly on tolerance. NONE.
I live in Philadelphia, which has a strong gay community, and I have
seen people passed over for promotions because they were straight,
and I even know some gays who freely admit that they only hire gay
people to work in their establishments. This is discrimination, and it
happens in all communities, all walks of life, all over the world.
I'm sick of gay people preaching about how tolerant gay people are.
Gay people are people too, and they are not socio-angelic types.
That is a myth. Also, there are gay racists, misogynists, fascists -
the list goes on and on. Wouldn't it be really great if no-one cared
who you slept with last night? Or the night before?
Away with these labels! is my vote, and I for one refuse to be branded,
despite the attempts to do so by my "well-meaning" gay acquaintances.
So there.
Right on, B! My feelings exactly!
Why are people so obsessed with who we sleep with anyway?
I hate being defined by sexual orientation. *I am human and I need to be
loved just like everybody else does.*
Freud concluded: "Throughout life the libido naturally oscillates
between male and female."
Kindsey's famous study places everyone somewhere between 1 and 5 on his
scale from 0 (heterosexual) to 6 (homosexual). Some interpret this to mean
that we are all really bisexual but I think it means that we are just all
sexual. And what is wrong with that?

Subject: Rickie Lee Jones story (NJC)
I having trouble sleeping, so I'll think I'll share a story before I try
again . . .
This was told to me by a friend of mine in LA who used to date Rickie Lee
Jones back in her early days. He's the writer of the song "Treat Willie
Good" that Rickie Lee has been known to sing. Anyway, he told me that
Rickie Lee used to do most of her grocery shopping late at night in 7-11
convenience stores. (I guess she ate a lot of junk food.) One time he
went with her to get some groceries, and she quickly accumulated quite a
pile, picking stuff off shelves and carrying each armload over to the
counter where she would dump it down and go off for more. As she shopped,
she munched on a cookie that she had picked up off one of the
displays. Finally, it came time to check out, and there was this big guy
working the night shift who rang up all her stuff. It came to quite a bit,
like $30 or something. She paid for it, and then she and my friend began
to walk out.
Just then the guy yells out at her "Stop!" She turns and says, "What?"
He says, "You didn't pay for that cookie!," as if she was trying to get
away with something. Rickie gets really pissed, really fast. In a flash
she's back at the counter and the guy--who senses he has aroused a
savage beast--steps away a few feet to be at a safe distance. Rickie
CLIMBS UP ONTO THE COUNTER, grabs her beret from off of her head, AND
STARTS WHIPPING HIM WITH IT! All the while she's cursing, "I wasn't
try'na steal your damn cookie!" The guy is like "Alright, alright."
Rickie slides down off the counter, gives him a dollar bill, turns
to my friend, who's standing by the door speechless, and says "Let's go."
!!! .
I think this is a hilarious story, but maybe you have to have lived in LA.
OK--good night.

Lawrence Welk, turn the volume down, and sing Rock & Roll songs to the
singing heads on the screen - what a hoot! And we were 'singin real

Joplin songs when the "Champagne Lady" was on.
And talk about Racism 101...the only black on the show was the poor
Step 'n Fetchit guy who'd come out and do all that tapdancing with the
waving arms and all that, and the camera would always cut to the
audience (100% old white folks) clapping as if to say "Look at that

Of course, I also made the transition from Lawrence and his accordion

Well dang, if EVERYONE has to do one of these...Here's WAY more than any of you
want to know about me...
1. Name: Robert Alan Muller
2. Nicknames: Bob, Bert, Bobito
3. Original Hometown: Detroit, MI but I moved so much as a
kid I don't feel like I had a "hometown"
4. School: Sanderson HS, Raleigh NC, class of '75, NC State, Bus. Mgmt BA
5. Bacon bits or croutons: I won't put 'em in but I won't pick 'em out
either
6. Favorite salad dressing: Was my Mom's homemade Thousand Island but she's gone
10 years now so I guess it's Ken's Steak House Ranch with Bacon
7. What do you drink: Coffee, water, Budweiser on the weekends
8. What type of deodorant do you use: Gilette Clear Stick
9. Favorite shampoo: Suave Shampoo in a drum
10. Favorite Color(s): Green, but I'm told that Red is
my color
11. One pillow or two: 1 but I have to deal with all
the extra pillows, throw pillows, shams, etc. that my
wife has put on the bed...
12. Pets: 2 cats, Jackson & Piper
13. Favorite Movie(s): Lots, Midnight Cowboy & American Graffiti are 2 that
come to mind + John Waters movies, a guilty pleasure
14. Favorite Types of Music: 60's Power Pop/Garage Band stuff, Broadway
tunes, of course Rock and Roll, Jazz trios, Big Band (Just put Glenn
Miller's "In the Mood" on at a party and watch it jump!), 60's & 70's soul
music (but not the pure 'disco' stuff)
15. Hobbies: Volunteering in the Public
Schools, reading, tennis
16. Dream Car: One that's paid for, dependable
and has a kickass stereo
17. Type of car you drive: My 1990 Mitsubishi

19. Favorite food: Pizza, Italian
20. Piercings or tattoos: Nope
21. Do you get along with your parents: I always did - I think my teen rebellion
phase lasted about a day. My Mom's dead now but she was definitely a saint. My

each other...
22. Favorite town to chill in: Pawley's Island, South Carolina - hopefully
the site for a Jonifest as the beach house sleeps about 25!
23. Favorite ice cream: I LOVE ice cream, and I
have discovered THE BEST! It's Mayfield's

Ale (makes your nose burn)

to school with used to wear, it absolutely used to drive me insane with

30. Favorite subject in school: English, Journalism, Anthropology in college
31. Least favorite subject: Economic Theory, Business Law

time when you can look at the paper the next day and see who won...
33. Craziest or silliest person you know: My younger sister is
tremendously creative and funny and plys her craft at ComedySportz in
Chapel Hill
34. Most humiliating moment: Well, this isn't THE MOST, but it's one I
can tell - I had just got my driver's license, was making out with a girl
in the car and when I took her home the POLICE were waiting - it seems
like we'd been out a little TOO long...(This is the SHORTEST version of
this story I've ever told)
35. Favorite holiday(s): Any that give me a day off of work...

Happy New Year, everyone!

That's true, Bern. Recently I was out with a mix of friends at a men's bar in
San Antonio. My friend David, 25 and recently out, was amazed to hear me tell
a story of being warned many years ago to stay out of a particular men's bar
in Phoenix because I "could get hurt" there. Physically hurt, as the men who
frequented that bar were known to have little tolerance for women, lesbians
included. David had to ask several of the older gay men in our party if such
a thing could be true, and he was assured it could be. David is still amazed.
I grew up in an very prejudiced family with no tolerance for anyone of
African, Italian, or Slavic decent, or Catholics, or gays. When my brother
Billy became ill from AIDS complications, love won out and some of the
intolerance toward gays subsided, but the rest of it is just about the same.
My little brother Kenny likes to see my reaction when he tells me he wants to
join WAR, and I hope he's kidding and just poking fun because the idea makes
me sick.
At the age of 11, I had my first real crush on a girl. One day I made this
statement to another friend: "I hate Catholics." She informed me that my
crush was Catholic, and for what now seems like weeks I walked around in a
daze, pondering this. Of course, I didn't know why I thought I hated
Catholics, other than that my parents had said it was the thing to do. So it
was at this point that I learned that my parents were perhaps not right about
everything. From then on, I began very hard to fight against my family in
order to establish my own beliefs.
In all honesty, sometimes I find myself low on tolerance, too ... although
mostly it's toward ignorant people, or toward people who seem smart but then
act like they don't have a brain in their head.
As for sexuality labels, a couple of years ago I read an interview in The
Advocate in which Sarah McLachlan (I'm sure I've misspelled her last name; I
always do) proclaimed her "omni-sexuality." If one feels the need for a
label, that one sounds a lot more reasonable to me. I, too, am always
wondering why people are so concerned with what I'm doing in my bedroom.
Sexuality is certainly interesting, but IMHO, I've always thought that people
who are sitting around imagining and worrying about what others are doing in
bed are the ones who are truly sick.
Oops, there goes my own intolerance showing again!
I hereby modify my statement to say that "some" gay people were put upon this
earth to Teach Tolerance by example. Or maybe I can only speak for myself.
Or maybe it's all just total crap, and there's no hope for anything or anyone.
Feeling a bit cynical this morning,

Subject: Grammy Joni in 2000?
I skimmed a complete list of Grammy nominees yesterday, and did not see
Joni's name anywhere on it. If my conclusion that she wasn't nominated for
any 1999 Grammy award for TTT is incorrect, please set me right. I'd be
delighted to be wrong!
But if it's correct, does anyone know whether she could be nominated for
that project *next* year? I seem to remember that TI was released in the
fall of 1994, but that Joni won her two Grammys for it in 1996. What's the
cut-off release date for nominations?
TTT was released on September 29, 1998, as I'm sure everyone on this list is
well aware!! ;-)
My apologies if this question has already been asked and answered.

Is there still an Anastasia on the list? Anastasia - I think you were the
one who gave me the info on Rush and Yes to pass on to my son John (screen

Anastasia at the Borders in Thousand Oaks the other day, and I thought,
"That's *got* to be the same ones!" Really small world, eh? Drop me an e-line

Hi everybody,
I've been away for awhile (I just moved from Chicago out to Seattle (and
just in time)). Anyway, what's the news on the video release of Joni's
ppv special? The website says the "concert will soon be available for
sale on home video." I went to my local video store, Scarecrow, which has
everything, and they didn't know about the video. Anyone know the scoop?
Good to be back. I've missed the Joni-listas.

I ordered a copy through Music Boulevard or CDNow, can't remember
which....anyway I received a notice a few weeks ago that it's still on
backorder without a new shipping date from the manufacturer. I'm frustrated

Subject: Grammy
Hi everyone,
Joni received not even one Grammy nomination for her wonderful album
Taming The Tiger, her track on Kyle Eastwood's first album, or her work
on Herbie Hancock's #1 Jazz Album Gershwin's World.
Here's some of my complaints- Nominated for Best Pop Album, which
Joni won two years ago for Turbulent Indigo, is Natalie Imbruglia's debut
album Left Of The Middle, which in my opinion is totally lacking in good
songs. Okay, maybe "Torn" is a catchy track and it was a big hit, but
Natalie didn't write that one. The songs on her album that she did write
are banal, sophmoric and truly boring. Well-produced? Yes. But still
boring. And for Herbie's Gershwin's World, Stevie Wonder, who has won
perhaps 25 Grammys already in his career, was nominated for his vocal
performance on the track "St. Louis Blues," but Joni's critically
acclaimed performances on "The Man I Love" and "Summertime" were ignored
by the Grammy committee. Yes, the album itself got a nomination for Best
Jazz Instrumental Performance, but this award (according to my reading of
the rules listed below) goes only to the artists who performed on the
instrumental tracks-
Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group For Albums only.
For solo artists, duos or groups, instrumental only. Compilation albums
by various artists are not eligible.
Native Sense - The New Duets
Chick Corea & Gary Burton
[Stretch Records]
Night And The City
Charlie Haden & Kenny Barron
[Verve Records]
Gershwin's World
Herbie Hancock
