You'd think that they could have put a little in the background. Did this surprise anyone else? I feel that the lyrics of this song speak very well to what 60 Min. was trying to say about this sad story. Having 2 women who were condemned to this religious prison tell their experiences is the same first person voice that Joni uses in her song. Anyway, I think 60 Min. dropped the ball. Of course I may be a little prejudice when it comes to anything Joni. Diana ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Jan 1999 22:32:04 -0800 (PST) From: LucasBC@webtv.net (Luke Bierlein) Subject: Joni Tribute Disc What's this about a tribute record? Can anyone tell me what female artists will be covering JM's songs? I would make some suggestions for male artists, but I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a tribute where Joni's contemporaries perform her songs, or if it's supposed to be more "artists of today" doing the songs in their own styles. Like... the Fleetwood Mac tribute album. You know, Sarah McLachlan has a version of "Blue", which is OK, and Natalie Merchant often covers "All I Want"--just some trivia for ya. (I love those women). I think both Tori Amos and Bjork would do incredible jobs renovating some of Joni's music. (Can any Bjork fans imagine her crooning something like "Blue Boy"?---gives me chills.) Anyway, my time is filled with trying to catch up on the CDs I've recently acquired (Cowboy Junkies, the Cardigans, Jude, Katell Keineg, and, of course, Joni!) and now I've got a new quarter of school to deal with. So far I've only really listened to "Banquet" thru "Electricity" on my new "FTR". One more question... what was the deal with having "FTR" and "CAS" as a double album? Were they recorded at the same time? Thanks! Luke ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 01:29:44 -0800 (PST) From: "bern.gallagher" Subject: Tolerant gay people? Where? Re: comments recently about gay men being put on earth by God to model tolerance to heterosexuals... Lori wrote > I was the person who first suggested that gays are on this earth to Teach > Tolerance by example, and as a lesbian, I stand by my statement.. Well, while we're discussing the privacy of our budoirs (sp?) I am neither gay nor straight. This is where someone will pipe in and say, "So, you're bi?" And my answer is, "no." And then they say, "what?" and I say, "I'm me." and then they say, "You must be either gay, straight, or bi." And then I say "Why?" and they say "because." I've been accused by gays of sitting on the fence (Ouch! the fence, I mean, not the comment) and by straight people of straddling a line. I've been ostracized by lesbian friends when they founud out I was dating a man (just like Chasing Amy", except not quite so subtle.) I've even been told by gay men that I was straight, no matter what I think. I'm here to make the point that gay people can be (and, in my experience, have been) just as intolerant and prejudicial as the fundamentalist Christians I know. It doesn't matter who you fuck. Gay people have NO monopoly on tolerance. NONE. I live in Philadelphia, which has a strong gay community, and I have seen people passed over for promotions because they were straight, and I even know some gays who freely admit that they only hire gay people to work in their establishments. This is discrimination, and it happens in all communities, all walks of life, all over the world. I'm sick of gay people preaching about how tolerant gay people are. Gay people are people too, and they are not socio-angelic types. That is a myth. Also, there are gay racists, misogynists, fascists - the list goes on and on. Wouldn't it be really great if no-one cared who you slept with last night? Or the night before? Away with these labels! is my vote, and I for one refuse to be branded, despite the attempts to do so by my "well-meaning" gay acquaintances. So there.
