Not me. The lyric of "My Funny Valentine" is a great example of romantic
realism in the tradition of Shakespeare's sonnet "My mistress' eyes are
nothing like the sun"
My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hat a far more pleasing sound;
I grant I never saw a goddess go,-
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground.
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare
Speaking as one whose figure is less than Greek, I really like lyrics and
poems for real people that tell it like it is ("My Romance" is another one).
Rather than be insulted, I would take comfort in knowing that I'm being loved
for the truly important things.

Subject: Listening to Hejira on a freind's $$$$ Hi-fi system.
Hey all:
I'm kinda new to the list. I've been a JM fan since the early 80s and have
liked her stuff since it first came out. Every once in a while, I pull out
my copy of Hejira and listen to it on my low to mid range audiophile system.
Recently, I after a listen, I decided to take it to a friends house that has
more $ tied up in his system than most small houses cost. i.e. his
interconnect cables from the preamp to the two big amps across the living
room costs about twice what I paid for my system. (In case you want to know
for him: all Mark Levinson preamp/transport/process/amp and a pair of huge
Magnapan flat panel ribbon speakers plus subwoofer). I've noticed before
that CDs that I have played on his system sound sooo much better on his
system than mine. (but honestly not $50,000+ more). Well, a little upgrade
for me has been in order. After a couple mods (new cables, speaker/listener
placement, etc) my little system is really sounding good. Joni is just
barely right of center and well focused. You can hear every breath both IN
and out. And almost hear her tounge hitting her teeth before each word.
Close your eyes and turn it up a little, and I swear she is in my living
room. I used to work sound/lights for a live band here in Houston and I
kinda know what real live music sounds like and especially acoustic music.
But ole' Jaco is distorting my low end with his excellent bass. So, more
mods are in planning. I'm blown away with the two of them (Jaco/Joni) plus
Larry Carlton on the songs they do on that LP: Coyote, title track, and
Black Crow.
So, the point of my email, is if you don't have a really nice system, you
owe yourself a listen on one. Take a Joni CD down to one of your really
good Audiophile stores and ask for a demo using it. You will be amazed what
a good system can do, especially for female vocals.

Guys,
Is this actually a proven fact? I have forever been under the spell of
the female voice.....musically, there a a few male voices that provoke a
strong emotional response in me (David Sylvian, Peter Gabriel, Neil
Finn, Paul Buchanan), but there is something very different about the
way the sound of a woman talking and singing makes me feel....listening
to my favourite female artists on headphones is a wonderful experience,
and always has been. Can anyone enlighten me further as to this
phenomenon?

Well, I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition. Or Monty Python references,
which makes me wonder if Joni is a fan of the Boys from Britain (and one
from the U.S. of A). One of those random thoughts. I admit that I don't
own many of these top albums myself, either. I have the excuse of NOT BEING
BORN when most were released. Don Juan was released the year of my birth,
but I think before the day, and I'm not sure about Steely Dan's, but as for
the rest. I have all the Joni stuff, of course. I'm going to show my
ignorance here... but what's the big deal over Dylan. All my life I've
heard about how great Bob Dylan is, and then I go and listen. I wasn't
Wow!ed like I was the first time I heard Joni (which incidentally was "A
Case of You."). Yes, he has some pretty great lyrics, I would even call
them masterful at times. But I don't get the urgency or emotion I get from
other artists, or knowing that you're good and playing with it (which I get
with Joni's later work). I know I have to be missing something. Everyone
else out there can't be wrong... then again, it's happened before. Alan - 1
Whole World - 0. Can we say MEGALOMANIA, boys and girls? Then again, I'm
handicapped: I was born in the Disco phase, grew up through the Big Hair
Band phase, and started to really appreciate music at the dawn of hip-hop
and alternative. But I also can't think of a single artist whom I would
consider brilliant who's career started after 1975. Any suggestions?

Well, Alan, for one I would nominate David Sylvian. Then maybe Paul
Weller too. I am currently listening to the recently released Style
Council 5-CD box set....and the quality and diversity of the material is
supreme. Add that to his 90s solo work, and I think it's more than
justified to suggest he is a major and long-term talent of great
proportions....

I have to pull out my lighter on this one! I've owned all (except Astral
Weeks) at one point or another. However, I was weaned on my beloved
Beatles. I went from hanging out with my parents watching Lawrence Welk to
hanging out with big brother & sister & listening to the Beatles! My
sister even made me watch them on Ed Sulivan cuz she had to work. I agree
that Revolver was at the top of the list!
I thought the progression from Lawrence to the Beatles to Joni was typical
for every 41 year old!
I say we BURN 'EM!!!!
P.S. Bob you music slut I'm rolling on the floor!

For me at least, TTT is a more difficult leap of faith. However, as time
flies by it's truth becomes more and more apparent. Where as, TI is more
blatantly steeped in traditional sounds of acoustic guitar and "old" Joni
production (for lack of a better description), the academy of recording arts
and sciences passed over TTT for probably the same initial response that many
people have had. Not all, but many.
I've been watching some of the "What Happened To" series on VH1, where the one
hit wonders and the like are tracked down years later. Men At Work's lead
singer Colin describes the Grammy he received as something like "the kiss of
death award".
Joni's recent heavy years of accolades and honors were her cue, smart person
that she is, to read between the lines. Albeit, this can come across as being
ungrateful she's dealing with an added dimension of being a long term player
in the business that so easily spits you out after a season.
God Bless her brains and talent.

but the part that really gets me, even more
than the perjury issue, is that our president is a sexual harrasser.
I don't buy this BS (Wally's sense) about harrassment only
counting if your job suffers (some rule made up by men).
Being harrassed on the job, especially by someone as powerful
as the Prez. is a really shitty thing. I hate what the Republicans are
doing (Watergate dies hard - Hopefully the've all been vicariously
infected with Gulf War syndrome, those jerks!) and I know they're a
bunch of hypocrites, but Clinton really is a sleaze. Who knows how
many women have been scuzzed by him. No doubt about it: he's a
total pig. If only Tipper wouldn't become First Lady if he's impeached!
Of course, all this is IMHO.

I'd love to hear U2's rendition of Woodstock!
