Subject: Congress' What?
Hello Y'all,
As this is my inagaural address, please bear with me. I've been viewing the
posts for several days now, and being amazed at the variety, I decided to
stay out for a while. And now I'm in, and i have to weigh in my views on
this whole politics thing. Having lived most of my adolescent and adult
life Inside the Beltway, I sometimes forget that not everyone is a political
junkie. But let me tell you, I am so sick of this whole matter. As sick as
I am, though, I think it's important that we stay focused and see this thing
through. I'm not happy about it, though. Wow, look at all the opinions.
Off the bat, I classify myself as a liberal to moderate Dem, but
pidgeonholing is not my strong point. So, let's sound off.
Indeed, it is surprising that we have seen the rise of the religious right
the last few years, and after the Republican Revolution of '94 I was afraid
of it. Then I remembered something: We've always been a religious nation.
By comparision, we are one of the most religious nations in the world. We
were founded on the bedrock of religious tolerance, on Puritan values and
ethics, on Quaker compassion. We have "In God We Trust" on our money. We
live in "One nation, under God.." Not a day goes by in our country that God
is not an integral part of the workings of our government. By comparision,
the French must see us as religious nutcases. In all honesty, it was
religion that founded this country, and the Fathers knew that a true
separation of church and state cannot exist. All they were going for was no
state religion. And let's be fair, if the Christian, or Religious, Right
wants to have a voice in politics, the have the right to one. After all, we
liberals have a right to voice our "religion" of a Great Society. Not that
I'm excluding Christians from being Dems. But I think that the power of the
Religious Right, at least the visible trappings, is on the wane. Notice how
many of their candidates were defeated, especially in the South, and how
many other Republicans distanced themselves from them last election.
As for the impeachment: I was a big Clinton supporter. I knew, like we all
did, that he had an affair with Miss L. But I gave him the benefit of the
doubt. Hell, I even vocally supported him. And then he says "Sorry, I
lied." It doesn't sit well with me, nor should it with anyone. He's been a
great President. But let's face it, he screwed up. Do I think he should be
removed from office? I'm glad I'm not a Senator. I'd be torn. I don't
think the affair is a high crime or misdeamenor. But I feel very strongly
that perjury is, regardless of the circumstance. And whether or not I think
he perjured himself, the House has decided he did. And on that, if I were a
Senator, even though I'd be torn, I may have to vote against him. I don't
believe this is all a right wing conspiracy. These are people, not
automations. They have to vote their conscience, if they have one, or their
meal ticket if they don't. I personally know several Reps, on both sides,
who really agonized about this. And I know the Sens are too.
Politics today is dirty, sadly. And there is partisanship: on both sides.
I applaude the Dems who crossed the line and voted for the articles of
impeachment. They voted their true beliefs. But the Democratic and
Republican parties tend to punish their members when they vote outside party
lines. Do I think that's wrong, yes. Can I change it? Not alone. But
there is a newer breed of politicians that believes in the primacy of
conscience, and I'm gald for it. We need it.
One other interesting note, that was sort of touched on: We don't live in a
democracy. We live in a democratic republic. What this means is that we
elect people to represent us. That person is not owned by us or controlled
by us, which is the current thinking. We elect them to do what is in our
best interest, AS THEY SEE IT. They shouldn't vote yes or no because the
public thinks they should. The public, or majority, is often wrong. If it
weren't for people voting their conscience, I wouldn't be able to voice my
opinion here. Why? Because I'm Irish, I'm Catholic until the 1940s, Irish
Catholics were excluded from most white collar professions, public
education, and society in general. I'd be struggling in a dead-end manual
labor job, trying make ends meet, instead of being able to be here at the
University of Wisconsin, studying and planning towards a doctorate degree.
Well, I just thought I'd contribute. : )

I still know much too little about Fado music, as I've discovered it
very recently, only a few months ago. What caught my attention was a
TV-broadcast live concert of Maria Joao and composer/pianist Manuel
Laginha. Maria is not a pure Fado singer, rather she mixes Fado with
Jazz and also a bit of African influences. She's very popular here in
Germany -- her quite frequent concerts are always sold out, and she also
holds jazz singing workshops for young vocalists. There also was a TV
interview in which she explained in detail the significance of Fado for
herself, but also for Portugal as a whole. I don't know if it was
triggered by her, but there have been a number of radio programs here
recently featuring Fado music. Unfortunately, I didn't tape them, and
so I don't remember the names of the featured artists. Quite a shame,
because they also translated some of the poems into German.
I took down the names you mentioned -- always appreciative of more
suggestions!
I guess I like powerful music that conveys emotions -- through the
melody and/or the lyrics. That's what Joni Mitchell is about, and that's
also what Fado is about. Like with Blues music, it doesn't really matter
that it's mostly melancholic. As long as it's authentic and you feel
there's personality behind it. That's also why I don't like techno music
- -- most of it sounds as if it was produced in a Volkswagen car
production line...
Shall I take a guess at what you guys are playing at the moment:
JM -- Come in from the cold ? :-)
Take care and drive carefully!

PS: FYI, "Winfried" is the German equivalent for "Winfred",
therefore a male's name... (it has happened before...)

Well it's also sort of a sore subject as Martha Rae(sp?) sued over the film

attempting to sidestep the risk of also falling into the rhetoric trap, described so well by kakki, I have seen Jerry Falwell's self-righteous infomercial campaign as far back as '92 and I honestly felt like: "come on!"... but then, there were valid questions about whether Clinton was telling, or could even identify, the truth back then and even before, and it kinda made me wonder, 'if I can tell he's a liar, can't others?'... but the thing that really gets me now is that it doesn't really matter anymore whether one is liberal or conservative, left, right, Christian, Bhuddist, pagan, atheist or Jew, if you are an American, this is your country and this is your president and it is nothing less than pure, stick-your-head-in-the-sand escapism to try to blame the "ultra conservative wing" for Clinton's perjury, just as it was to blame "the radical left" for the sins of Nixon, and I really don't think it's going to help things improve for you, along with so many others to ignore reality that way, in fact, I would say that we may well be witnessing the last days of this country if you all, regardless of political or religious bent, don't get your heads out of..... the sand!

Everyboy has lied about their sex life. Admit it.
But Clinton lied to a "Grand Jury" (and that itself is debatable). Shocking.
Impeachable.
Well, Hyde and Livingston and all the other Republican hypocrites lied to
their godamned wives and families with impunity. Where does that rank?

Perhaps my point is strengthened. Note I did not defend big defense
spending :-). Note I did not say the arts were not a worthy investment.
Note I did not say people with means should not generously help those in
need. I simply do not think it is the role of govt to support art et al.
I do not think it right to force people to support art or things in
general against their will. (In some circles, that's called robbery.)
Why can't you and I support art on our own? In some small way I do; you
probably do too. But maybe we and others would and could do more if we
didn't work five months out of the year to pay taxes.
In general, I don't like or trust govt, especially the one in
washington. It's a waste and a joke (democrats and republicans). But
it's a necessary evil. We'd all be better off if those dolts were there
doing "the work of the people" for maybe three months out of the year
and had to work for a living the other nine. Think about it.

Think of all the money I've saved avoiding the nominated albums. Their

for any number of MOR and 1HW acts ... ;-)

Well, I own them all, on both vinyl and CD and have had them all on vinyl at
least for 20 years. There isn't a bad one in the bunch, though my personal
preferance is for "Moondance" over "Astral Weeks" and "Revolver" and "Rubber
Soul" over "Abbey Road" and "The White Album," though all of those Beatles
albums are fantastic.
I am astonished. I used to think all three of you had such good taste.
Now we will have to throw you all to the wolves and see if you taste good.
Or maybe instead of the Spanish Inquisition or burning you at the stake, we
should first throw you all in the water and see if you float, because we all
know that witches are made of wood, and so like ducks they float!

I can understand that. Omitting TTT from the package nominations is nutzo.
But I found one bright spot among the nominations, to wit:
Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group
For Albums only. For solo artists, duos or groups, instrumental only.
Compilation albums by various artists are not eligible.
Native Sense - The New Duets
Chick Corea & Gary Burton
[Stretch Records]
Night And The City
Charlie Haden & Kenny Barron
[Verve Records]
Gershwin's World
Herbie Hancock
[Verve Records]
Points Of View
Dave Holland Quintet
[ECM Records]
Tokyo '96
Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock & Jack DeJohnette
[ECM Records]
Would be nice for Gershwin's World to take it, no?

Is it just me, or are fellow Listees also in approval that female singers
seem more capable (adroit?) of instantly
locating the heart of a heartbreak, pain and loss in a song? My list seems
to confirm that:
1. Apron Strings - Everything But The Girl
Everything Tracey Thorn sings is full of heartbreak that seems to
companionably put one back to one's piece.
2. Blue Skies - Andrea Marcovicci
An Irving Berlin song that is optimistic but always manages to sound
wistful and sad.
3. The Moon Is Made of Gold - Rickee Lee Jones
Can't quite get over this one-of-a-kind performance from a woman who may
not wow a lot of people with that waif-ish voice, but can instantly make
people believe in the songs she sings.
4. Don't Worry `Bout Me - Billie Holiday
The simplicity and the matter-of-factness of Lady Day's voice made it even
more tragic.
5. More Than I Can Bear - Julia Fordham
With just a voice and guitar, she traces the pain of a woman who was
imagining what it feels for a guy to make love to another woman in their
bed and using her own housedress. Very painful and always makes one
misty-eyed.
6. Dirty Hands, Dirty Face - Judy Garland
No contest. This woman can sing anything with just her voice and make one
aware of the pain.

It is also true that we are conditioned to be more sympathetic to the female
voice. That may have something to do with it.
