Is there more in the article which explains this > connection that Vidal makes? I'm not a political expert, but I'll do my best Kakki. If you look at who started the impeachment process rolling, it's all Southen congressmen with ties to the Christian right. The Christian Fundamentalists (they should just be called Damentalists--they have no sense of "fun" but they are demented!) are alligned with the Republican party because the RP is against such "liberal" policies as women's rights, gay rights, and freedom of choice re: abortion. The Republican party got the reputation for supporting "family values." Unfortunately, family values, according to them, included a lot of intolerance. That's why, where I live (Chapel Hill is a little bastion of liberalism in the midst of the Bible Belt) people often sport bumper stickers that read "Hate is NOT a family value." Christian Damentalists have clout, but I don't have any stats handy. They have a herd mentality because obedience to authority is such an important value for them so if their church or, for that matter, televangelical preacher takes a stand on something political, they all follow suit like lemmings. Unfortunately, the Republican party's BIG agenda is having less and less government, which translates to cutting more and more social services, programs that help people, programs that provide a safety net to people who are not affluent. I'm not just talking welfare, but hundreds of programs like Headstart that help make the world more kind to people who are not in affluent positions. This, of course, is very Christian---helping people, giving the poor aid, but is not embraced by the Republicans. They believe in having less and less government, so that taxes can be lowered. The justification is that people will then be able to give privately to support the causes they prefer; that churches and other private charities should help the disadvantaged. But what it really translates to is more money that affluent people can use to invest or spend on themselves. Meanwhile, things like money for education would be cut, leading to a situation where only the kids of the well off get a good education, and everyone else's kids go to hell. Result: more drug addiction, violence, stupidity, vast waste of human resources. The eventual cost to society will be humongous. Why aren't Republicans supporting Clinton since the economy is doing so well? No matter how good the economy does, it will not be as good for elite interests as if someone was in power again like Reagan who would cut social services and represent the interests of the affluent with every bill he (or she!) signs. The corporate powers want legislation that will be good for corporate interests. This equates to supporting the Republicans. There is a general misperception amongst those in the Christian right that the Republicans are alligned with Christian values when they are actually primarily alligned with corporate values. Yes, they are anti-abortion, anti-gay, anti-women's rights, but that is just because they are supporting the powerful elite, and gays and women are not invited to the table. Meanwhile non-elite people are suffering incredibly, as expressed so poignantly by Joni in "Banquet." BTW, to think of the song "For Free" in political terms, the Clinton folks would want to keep such agencies as the NEA that can and have helped thousands of artists of all kinds to be able to survive and contribute to society. The Republicans would have the artist either make it or starve according to what the market will allow (how many people will throw a quarter in his instrument case). I like government suppport of the arts, because do we want commercial interests alone to dictate what art/artists survive? Not a good situation. Too many good non-commercial projects that really enhance society more than many of the commercially-viable ones. Kakki concluded with: > This sounds like the same kind of desperate rhetoric that abounded during > the Nixon impeachment proceedings. If you don't see it, try substituting the > words "superstitious Christian Fundamentalists" with "subversive liberal > athiests", and "their corporate manipulators" with "their Communist > manipulators" and this could have been written by a card-carrying John Birch > Society member in 1974. Haven't we evolved just a little bit in 25 years to > not so quickly fall for this kind of stuff? Mark responds: I really don't see it this way Kakki. Watergate has nothing to do with this Clinton debacle: Nixon hired strongmen to beat up his political enemies, he ordered the men serving him to break into the offices of his political opponents and steal files, etc. THAT'S subverting the constitution. The Republicans have exerted huge amounts of effort to try and create a mental link in the general public's mind between Watergate and this Clinton stuff. But it just doesn't fly. Simply not in the same ballpark, despite the witch hunt and all the propaganda. So, no, I don't think it's the same rhetoric. NOBODY thought that Nixon hadn't subverted the constitution after the evidence came to light. Mark K. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 06:44:32 -0500 (EST) From: "Mark T. Mark K. writes: This touches on one of my pet peeves. Why aren't artists allowed to be human? We make people so famous that their every action is examined under a microscope for an audience of millions and then we lose repect for them when they have their bad days. How would any of us like it if our worst behavior was still being talked about decades later by strangers? When are we going to learn that all of us "fly," but "crawl too"? * When I think of the incredible treasures Lennon left the world, I don't care how many tampons he wore on his head. It could have been his normal attire for all care. If Lennon had personally heckled me, or somehow made my life miserable, then I could justify being pissed with the guy for a minute or so. But most of us do not have to have personal relationships with the artists we love--thank God! Many of the greatest are, as Joni puts it,"monsters." Hopefully not for a couple more years, I'm not ready! Good luck with the wedding, certainly a major and wonderful event for our family.Be careful with the music you use though, or you could be sobbing through the whole thing! You guys never cease to amaze me by bringing up subjects that are relevant to me. I haven't listed my weepy songs because it was just too difficult to weed them out, but have run across a couple. Walk Away Renee is one--but for good reasons--more often I cry when when I'm touched in a positive way, rather than being sad. For my husband and I, Renee is "our song"! I know it has a very sad connotation, but it happened to be playing on the radio when we made out in the car for the first time, and that was it. All I have to hear are the first few strains and I'm a goner. Yesterday, I was listening to Laura Nyro (Nested/Live at the Bottom Line) and realized my biggest weepy is her song "Emmie". We named our daughter (mentioned above) Emily because of that song. I tried to play it for her recently, and got so choked up, I had to leave the room! "Pomp and Circumstance" always gets me too, and most of the "life cycle" songs. "Rock n' roll in the dashboard Romance in the back of..." Brian's mom's oldsmobile! Sorry Mark, I don't see it that way. The impeachment proceedings are mandated by our Federal law when evidence of a crime by a President has been brought to the attention of Congress. Congress does not have a choice in deciding whether to proceed. Representatives of Congress, whether they be Republican or Democrat are bound to follow that mandate. Are you saying, rather, that the Southern/Christian right congressmen/women clamored the most to follow through on the actual impeachment? >The Christian Fundamentalists (they should just be called >Damentalists--they have no sense of "fun" but they are demented!) are >alligned with the Republican party because the RP is against such >"liberal" policies as women's rights, gay rights, and freedom of choice >re: abortion. The Republican party got the reputation for supporting >"family values." I think this is overgeneralizing, don't you think? It helps make the point that all Republicans are evil, hatemongering whatevers, but is it really a fair and accurate depiction? I don't want to even attempt to debate the evils of the Republicans and the virtues of the Democrats. I merely don't care for the extremist and overgeneralizing rhetoric thrown out there by Gore Vidal. It is pandering. I sympathize that you live in a strongly Bible-belt section of the U.S. You must see the extremes on a daily basis far more than I ever will. I'm sure our perpectives are very different. I've always lived in Los Angeles, and found that California, despite being the land of Reagan and Nixon, is one of the most liberal and progressive places to live in the country. I don't see the Christian right controlling our politics here in any way. I personally have known and know many Republicans here who support abortion, women's rights and are gay. I've also known many Democrats who are not as tolerant in their day to day lives as what they espouse in their political views. My point is that certain kinds of polarizing rhetoric in our country is really becoming, or should be becoming, passe. We should think a little more critically and independently and examine each issue in a more careful manner, rather than leaping on the bandwagon for whatever the pundits tell us on television and print. >Why aren't Republicans supporting Clinton since the economy is doing so >well? I actually don't think the Republicans are really enjoying this whole interlude. Who wants to waste time with it? Who wants to go forward with it in the face of the media and everyone else calling you a witch hunter and all sorts of other unsavory names? Plus, who wants to disrupt the country's business for this stuff? Do you really think they are enjoying it? If people really think this is some kind of vast conspiracy that the Republicans are engineering, then our country is in a lot more trouble than we can imagine. >I really don't see it this way Kakki. Watergate has nothing to do with >this Clinton debacle: Nixon hired strongmen to beat up his political >enemies, he ordered the men serving him to break into the offices of his >political opponents and steal files, etc. THAT'S subverting the >constitution. NOBODY thought that Nixon hadn't subverted >the constitution after the evidence came to light. I'm not saying that Clinton's set of facts are comparable to Nixon's situation. I'm saying it is the same type of extremist rhetoric that abounded back then in Nixon's defense. Nixon did not face impeachment because he ordered the break-in. He faced impeachment for LYING and obstruction of justice for those lies. And even some of those who thought Nixon subverted the constitution still think it was no big deal that he lied. My view is that it is a big deal if anyone lies in a legal proceeding and before a Grand Jury, especially a President, and regardless of the set of facts or rationalization for those lies. From the current issue of Rolling Stone, and available on RS Online. -- Scott ______________ The distemper that Joni Mitchell has flashed in recent interviews also turns up on Taming the Tiger: the title song's snap at the music biz and "whiny white kids"; the splash of rage and alcohol in "Lead Balloon" ("'Kiss my ass,' I said/And I threw my drink. . . ."). But outright choler is an awkward fit on Mitchell. Her specialty is simmering discontent and step-by-step reconciliation -- slow boils that, combined with the milky familiarity of her sound (bleating brass; her gliding, echo-laden guitar), make it easy to mistake Taming the Tiger for any recent Mitchell album. That would be a mistake; Tiger's claws are the retractable kind, shooting in and out of "Stay in Touch" and "Face Lift" with a deft touch. Even better are Mitchell's recent live shows, like the one I saw in New York where she made her own blues from covers of Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man" and Billie Holiday's "Comes Love" and, in the encore, radically redrew the rhythm and vocal lines of her own "Woodstock" to mirror the ebb and flow of her generation's great, drained expectations. A brilliant performance from a consummate artist, pissed off or otherwise. - D.F. _____________________________________________________ "Beware the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, then finds himself no wiser than before." -- Kurt Vonnegut _____________________________________________________ http://www.scott-adams.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Jan 1999 13:37:21 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@fluordaniel.com Subject: Re[2]: weepers Mark in Seattle wrote: <> Mark, since Lorenz Hart is my dad's favorite lyricist, I probably need to at least take a stab at defending it; These lyrics sound a lot tougher taken out of context. Yes I know the entire lyric & intent of the song & I wouldn't argue the merits of Lorenz Hart as a lyricist but the words to this song just don't work for me. I think it speaks of unconditional love that sees beyond > surface blemishes. Cowboy Junkies do a song on their latest CD that says 'the beautiful is not chosen, the chosen becomes beautiful'. To me that says it much better. If you're writing a love song to somebody saying 'you're my favorite work of art' and 'don't change a hair for me' hardly takes the sting out of basically telling the object of your affection that they are, at best, odd or funny looking and not too bright. I firmly believe that real love is not blind. It sees the imperfections of its object and loves that person anyway. Unconditional love. But I find 'My Funny Valentine' to be cloying & insulting. And I happen to love many of the old standards by Rogers & Hart, George & Ira, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, etcetera, etcetera & so forth! > > Plus, it's a rare lyricist who'll rhyme "laughable" with > "unphotographable"! :-) I'll agree with you there. Sondheim & E Y Harburg (Wizard of Oz, Finian's Rainbow) are 2 more lyricists that produced some ingenious rhyme schemes. It's called 'Planet Waves' and I bought it as a cut-out many years ago. Maybe listened to it twice. Haven't played it since. I don't own a single Steely Dan album (ever since hearing way too much of 'Gaucho' when it came out I've always thought they were pretentious & their lyrics a lot of drivel - so shoot me. It also annoys the hell out of me that I can't understand half of Rickie Lee Jones' mushy enunciation and that turned me off to her along time ago also and if she defends that as a stylistic choice, I also find that pretentious and annoying) or one Van Morrison album. Since they are such opposite viewpoints, I have to jump in. I've held back on expressing my view of the situation in Washington for months now (on this list anyway), going between trying to ignore, being depressed and then being furious at everyone in this very destructive drama. So today I'm in angry-about-it mode. Even though I don't agree with you, Kakki, you're not the target of this anger, and I really hope it doesn't come across as if you are. Kakki wrote: The impeachment proceedings are > mandated by our Federal law when evidence of a crime by a President has been > brought to the attention of Congress. Congress does not have a choice in > deciding whether to proceed. True, but conservative Republicans set the stage for this impeachment. Someone said they can't get past the fact that Clinton lied; I can't get past the underhanded slimey way this "crime" was set up. After 3+ years of constant investigating the Republican Special Prosecutor (with his own Southern Baptist conservative agenda) could not find that Clinton had done anything illegal. Then Paula Jones appears, ready to seek "justice"; yeah, right, 6 years after the alleged incident, and who's paying for her lawyers? The Rutherfurd Institute, a very conservative group. And who's paying for fixing her nose, hair and teeth; certainly not Paula Jones. And why is the supposed-to-be-impartial Kenneth Starr helping to get Lewinsky on tape? And then, after Clinton's testimony (which I'm not even sure was perjury, since he claimed to be going by the judge's definitions), what's happened to Paula Jones, questing after justice? All of a sudden she doesn't have any lawyers. She's served her purpose; why keep paying lawyers, especially when the initial case was already dismissed? The settlement was similar to what Clinton's lawyers had offered early on. Paula Jones had been used, although she doesn't seem to realize it. Why, if this impeachment is all about the crime of perjury, does the not-even-officially-elected-yet Speaker of the House Livingston announce that since he's had affairs he's resigning, so the President should follow his lead and also resign. And the Republicans say this impeachment isn't about sex?!!! And isn't partisan?! It most definitely is, and it disturbs me no end that in many people's minds it has been simplistically reduced to the President "lying under oath." Especially since the Paula Jones case was dismissed and it is highly unlikely that ANYONE would be later tried for possible perjury in a dismissed case. As far as the Grand Jury testimony, it was built upon Clinton's testimony in that case, and did he evade and split hairs, yep, did he lie? I don't know. Everyone, including Clinton, is so dirty in this disgusting, demoralizing morass of lies, betrayal and power plays. Very stupid of Clinton to not just admit his sexual wrongdoing last January. Although, even if he had, my guess is the prosecutor would still be investigating Clinton on something or other, because his agenda is not the truth, but getting Clinton (and I assume that because Starr had been investigating for YEARS without finding anything, with no indication that he was ever going to wrap it up). As disappointed and angry as I am at Clinton's behavior, I'm furious at the conservative Republicans. To me, they are destroying the belief that as Americans we have some say in our government, and that is much worse than what Clinton has done. > I'm not saying that Clinton's set of facts are comparable to Nixon's > situation. I'm saying it is the same type of extremist rhetoric that > abounded back then in Nixon's defense. Nixon did not face impeachment > because he ordered the break-in. He faced impeachment for LYING and > obstruction of justice for those lies. And even some of those who thought > Nixon subverted the constitution still think it was no big deal that he > lied. Nixon most definitely did face impeachment because of the burglary, and involving government agencies in such an illegal act, NOT because he lied about it. And, NO ONE was defending Nixon. After the facts were known, Barry Goldwater, the leader of Nixon's own party, led the Republicans to the White House to tell Nixon that he would, without a doubt, be convicted if a trial was held in the Senate. That's why Nixon resigned, not for the "good of the country," not because he lied. It was good but I was a little disappointed that they sort of skipped over some of the latter part of her career. 'For the Boys' was a project that meant a lot to Bette. It didn't do well at the box office which was a disappointment for her. Also I've always felt her pairing with Lily Tomlin in 'Big Business' deserves a special place in the history of screen comedy.
