"Walk Away Renee" but I don't know who recorded it. I just know its about a lover leaving. (Do I sense a pattern here?) Sample: "Just walk away, Renee. You won't catch me follow you back home." An LP called "Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim". Boy I have to lock up the handguns before spinning that one. Sample lyric: "What's the use of waves that break in the cooooool of the evening? What is use of the evening, without you? It's nothing...... What's the use of my wonderful dreams, without you?" "Hey Jude" made me cry when I saw Paul and Linda a few years ago. The first time I heard Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely". "MacArthur Park". Sample lyric: "Someone left the cake out in the rain and I don't think that I can make it cause it took so long to bake it." Just kidding. I'm testing to see if you guys are still alert. This was recorded and released by The Left Banke in July 1966 and was followed-up by their other hit, the haunting Pretty Ballerina (released December 1966) which also is devastating. Try to find their anthology "There's Gonna Be A Storm" if you can. It is a mixed bag and some of it is quite dated, but I also guarantee you will have it on constant play for days. >An LP called "Francis Albert Sinatra and Antonio Carlos Jobim". Yep, uh huh, totally. An absolute classic. Kakki NP: She May Call You Up Tonight - Left Banke ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Jan 1999 07:25:34 -0500 From: "Steve Garrison" Subject: Renee and David Wilcox A terrific (and very weepy) cover of this song is on an album by Italian guitarist Peppino d'Agostino on the Mesa label called "Venus Over Venice." The haunting vocal on "Walk Away Renee" is by David Wilcox, of all people. It's a very nice album, mostly instrumental. Came out in 1995, don't know if it's in print. I am beside myself with excitement at her mention of Fado . I am Portuguese born and partly bred and I am proud to have this incredibly passionate music build right into my genetic make-up ! I wonder if Winifried has heard of Dulce Pontes. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform in Lisbon, Portugal this summer and her voice "made me weak in the knees" ! I am also a big fan of the great Amalia. Again in Portugal this summer, I saw a documentary on Amalia's work on television. It's nice to see younger women like Dulce Pontes carrying on the Fado tradition, interpreting it in their own more modern style perhaps but continuing to give it breath and thus life. I will be sad, if like American blues, this incredible music begins to fade away. I believe that the Portuguese have Fado ingraved in their souls sufficiently to not let this happen. I'm also pleased to see the rest of the world, although quietly, take note of how moving and soul wrenching Fado music is. Fado: my original exposure to "confessional" music ! I would love to hear from Winifried about how she was exposed to Fado. I am in a sort of "world music" type of band, and I sing in over a dozen different languages, including Macendonian, Hebrew, French, Latvian, Finnish, Catalonian, etc. Before singing any of these pieces, I have always found someone who speaks the language to make sure I am pronouncing the words as authentically as possible, as well as get the translation, background, etc. I have a new piece the band would like to do in Bulgarian, and so far, have not found anyone at all who speaks the language. If any of you know Bulgarian, or know someone that does, or where else I could go, and would be willing to help out, *please* e-mail me privately. I would be forever grateful. THANKS!! I'm a journalist in the U.K. and I'm visiting America for two and a half months in April and need to interview anyone that went to memorable gigs between 1958 and 1974 (which I have loosely termed 'the 60's'). Can you put me in touch with anyone in the U.S. (by email) who went to see Joni Mitchell in the 60s / early 70s? The more contact names and email addresses I have, the better. I can then contact them with a view to interviewing them in the States and including their thoughts and recollections in the book. Thanks for your time, and I hope you can help. According to the long liner notes in miniscule type on the compilation CD, they had a number of guitarists over time - George Hirsch, Jeff Winfield, Rick Brand. What is your friend's name? The lead singer, Steve Martin, did not die after they produced the first few hits, but the leader of the group, Michael Brown, split from them at that time and formed another group also called The Left Banke. After much fighting, they all reconciled, but had confused their fans and ticked off their record label in the interim and never quite regained their initial popularity. I found a Left Banke web site at http://member.aol.com./bocad/leftbank.htm that addresses a rumor that Steve Martin had died. Apparently it was just a rumor and he is still alive and kicking. Also found a Walk Away Renee web page at http://www.crl.com/~tsimon/renee.htm about the song's inspiration. Garbage are, especially with the second album, quintessentially pure adrenalin pop...classic song structures and a vibrant delivery. I played their debut so many times during 1996/97....Stupid Girl, Milk, Only Happy When It Rains were all superb singles. Having been born in 1971, and not buying my first record until I was 12 (!), I was a little bit young when Blondie were at their peak, but in the UK they had a long succession of huge hits and were hardly ever off Top Of The Pops. I can still recall the times I saw Call Me, The Tide Is High, Dreaming and Atomic on that show as a wee lad :o) I would agree that Shirley & co. have a definite streak of that same quality, though I wouldn't wish to enter any debate concerning the validity/originality of what they do ;-D There is a point during Special where it breaks into the Pretenders Talk Of The Town, but apparently Chrissie Hynde gave her permission.....whether this signifies the artists of that time appreciate what Garbage are doing, I have no idea.
