OK Ric,
You've convinced me. I'm not going to bother with the cure, at least for the
time being. After all, I could be wasting my time doing much worse things, I'm
sure. And why should Betty Ford make money out of me anyway?
I just hope this list is still going when I'm old and grey and with time on my
hands. That's when I'll really need it!

So I'm probably really shaming myself by
asking that question, but I just have to know!
There are no dumb questions, some issues have been raised b4, and new
ones crop up all the time. I'm truly amazed at the stuff I learn when these
types of questions get asked, after following Joni's music and press for 20
years I thought I knew everything, but thanks to this list, I'm always
learning, and realizing that there were things I'd never noticed the first (and
hundredth) time :-)
I have been wondering for years just what Joni is doing on the cover of
"Blue". Because of the dark cover, I can't tell what's she got either
in her mouth or by her face. I thought it might be a pipe, but I wasn't
sure.
Well the CD, cause it's so small, is practically indistinguishable.
Thinking back to the 12" LP (that's burried in a closet and inaccessible right
now) I always thought it was a microphone near her mouth...I'm sure someone on
the list will set this straight (it *did* come up once b4, ages ago, and I
don't recall.)
And one more thing... why is it that on "LOTC", the song is called "For
Free" and in "MOA" it's "Real Good For Free"? Who changed it and why?
Thanks for the help and understanding (I hope)!
This isn't the first inconsistency in a title from studio to live
release. The HOSL song "Sweetbird" was listed on the Refuge of the Roads video
(1984) as "Sweetbird of Youth." (she does "For Free" on the ROR video, btw, and
it's listed as "For Free.") And on the last leg of her most recent tour, the
song "Song for Sharon" was introduced in Atlanta (the only venue where she
played that one) as "Song For Sharon Bell." I think we've concluded that the
"real" title is the one that appears on the original album.
There are more lyrical inconsistencies than titular ones -- The Complete Poems
and Lyrics book, released last year, was riddled with errors (I think Howard
Wright complied a rather long list!).
Joni herself doesn't help things, as she's been known to change words over
time. The original (Hejira version) of Refuge of the Roads began "I met a
friend of spirit, he drank and womanized" -- but for years she's been singing
"I met a friend of spirit, a drunk with sage's eyes." On the original (Hejira)
version of "Black Crow" she sang "in search of love and music my whole life has
been" -- these days she sings "in search of truth and beauty my whole life has
been." I won't even mention how many times "Listen, strains of Benny Goodman
coming through the snow and the pinewood trees" from "Hejira" was changed in
live performance.
Speaking of lyric changes, on the ROR video version of "For Free" she adds a
full new chorus: "playing like a rising star, playing like a fallen angel,
playing for a hat full of nothing to the honking of the cars."

As Kenny mentioned, Joni has not been averse to changing her songs
over time. It seems to me that the titles sometimes get shorter when
they're listed on the albums. Examples:

hi luke,
I don't see any reason to be ashamed of asking what you don't know... as for me, I have always thought that was a pic of Joni in a tight spotlight singing into a mic... however the image IS pretty dark and muddy and I could be 'filling in' what I assume is goin' on... *S* pat

I think the Hall of Fame is pretty meaningless, and like several other people
in the list I'm not sure I understand the critieria for inclusion (apart from
the 25 year rule). That said, I think the Staple Singers are as worthy of
inclusion as most of the others Bob mentions on his list, and not just because
they've been around so long (Pops made his first single in the early 50s).
Mavis in particular is a truly great singer, and was an influence on singers
like Gladys Knight. Pops was still alive last I heard (he'd be about 84 by
now), and his recent album "Father Father" was a pretty darn good for an
octogenerian. They also cropped up in a bit of rock/soul crossover, forming a
mutual admiration society with Talking Heads: they covered "Slippery People",
which encouraged David Byrne to dip his toe into soul, which ended up with
their ace cover of "Take Me To The River".
As for Dusty, I can only say, Bob, that you must indeed have been napping when
Dusty was at her peak, because she did a hell of a lot more than the few songs
you mentioned. You mentioned "From Dusty in Memphis" in passing, but didn't
mention what a brilliant record it was, and how highly Jerry Wexler (a man who
knows his onions when it comes to singers) rated her. May I suggest you have
a listen to Dusty singing "Some of Your Loving", You Don't Have to Say You
love Me", "Am I the Same Girl", etc etc, and treat yourself!

So sorry to hear about your demise! This just means you get to start over
with a clean slate. I had a similar thing happen to me. There was an
obituary in the newspaper with my name and exact age, but it was another

Subject: HELLO
Greetings All,
I'm new to the list and will probably tend to be a lurker--the
trigger would usually be to come to the defense of the more sensitive of
the group. I have to say I am a little intimidated from some of the
resent Christian bashing I've read here. Especially considering Joni
played a major role in helping me get my Christian walk back on
track...ie "Love-1 Cor 13", "Passion Play", "Slouching Towards
Bethlehem" and "The Sire of Sorrows."
Huge Joni fan ever since the Time mag cover story sucked me in in
high school. Collected entire catalog within the next year and half
(a little too fast considering her work is pretty overwhelming in large
doses.) From day one Siquomb has had my unmatched and unthreatened
loyalty. I've seen Joni live Vancouver BC '79, Portland,OR '79 "nearly
front row seats to the right side of the stage" (second row, center
aisle seat right, to be exact!!) Concord, CA '83, Jazz Festival '95 and
the Gorge '98.
I met Joni backstage at Jazz Fest. and like everyone else has said
she was gracious, personable and very sweet. And she looked much better
face to face then on tape or T.V- easily 15 yrs. younger and also more
petite. What really got me though was the intent eye to eye contact she
kept in thoughtfully listening to and answering me. Having been told
I'm especially direct for a woman (others not Joni) I asked, " How do
you do it? I mean you are sooooo much better than everybody else. You
do things and get tired of them musically like ten years before the rest
get caught up to where you have already been. Reviews may be good or
even great but the general public just doesn't get it. I'm a huge fan,
but I'm only a fan and I get sooo ticked by the lack of ackknowlegement
of your genius. Isn't that hard for you to take?" Her reply in context
(please don't quote me) ''You know it really doesn't really matter if
they're always accepted well by the masses or not. I have to be loyal
to the visions in my head in my art. But actually when I signed up to
play here I was going to call this my swan song. But since I got this
new guitar I was playing with tonight, I've become pretty jazzed about
the possibilities for the future." There was more dialog between us
that I am fuzzy on because Joni had caught me so off guard by her lovely
manner. And the eye to eye contact also meant she witnessed mine glaze
over in reverent awe as we spoke.."If there's one rule to this game that
everybody can name real plain it's, Be Cool." NOT. Had I known I'd be
meeting Joni, the accessible beer I gave would have been either Chateau
Margeux or a bottle of German wine to drink and the autograph she gave
me would have gone beside her picture in my Starart book.
So how about a thread, if it has not already been done (remember I'm
new here) If you met Joni what would you ask/say? And given an
autograph where would you want it?
Happy New Year,
Penny G.

Happy New Year to all of you! Just wanted to take a moment to reflect on
last year, which brought me to this list and gave me the opportunity to
meet some of you at the New England Jonifest! It was a highlight of 1998. I
have since not been too active with this list simply because it requires
more time than I can spare. Instead of reading and responding to messages
for an hour each day, I have tried to pick up my guitar each day instead.
And thanks to the wonderful guitar info on Wally's site, I have learned a
few more Joni songs and generally had a lot of fun playing around. So
forgive me for being such a postslacker but I have been reading my digests
faithfully, developing a pretty good scrolling speed
Since this is a new year and I don't foresee myself becoming independently
wealthy with a lot of time to do all I wish I could do, I quickly want to
extend my deepest appreciation (which is long overdue on my part) to Wally
and Les for all their incredible work and dedication. Thank you so much and
wish you the very BEST. Also, thanks to all of you for the great stories,
information, tips, insights, opinions, jokes, and raw emotions. This is a
most interesting gathering of people I have come across so far. I wish
everyone a tremendously prosperous 1999 and many extraordinary Joni moments!

hiya folks. happy new year! i've been doing the major skim lately, but had
some time to catch up w/y'all this week. just a few things to comment about
- -- on the subject of rickie lee jones... i've seen her 7 times over the past 8
(?) years. last time was a few months ago. the band wasn't very tight, but
jones was not stoned (at least didn't seem it). she put on a very charming,
intimate, rough show. the first time i saw her she was incredible (a two
night gig with a full band at the release of 'flying cowboys' i think). then
twice i saw her play solo (or just with rob wasserman playing bass) a year
apart (the seeds of her album 'naked') and she could hold a big room just up
there by her lonesome - fabulous. the ghostyhead show was the worst, but i
still loved it. she was having a very bad night, with some terrible technical
problems. she cut the show short because of it, but the experience was good,
and very interesting. seeing rickie do trip hop a year or so after seeing her
play solo acoustic was a great surprise. RLJ's work is very solid, and i
wouldn't judge her entire career on the basis of one show - you're cheating
yourself. someone wrote a response to this in re: to joni - if you based your
impression of joni on one show you could really lose out. her last show in my
area (before this year) was one in which she sang one or two songs, got pissed
off at the audience for being loud (she was the headliner too!) and walked off
the stage. the show before that she was a no show. this time around, she was
good, but cut her show short by 4 or 5 songs.

"why is it that when a Van Gogh exibit hits town, the place isn't overrun
with fans?"
although the town is not overrun, vincent has not gone without extreme
popularity. the exhibit in DC sold out its 3+month stay within a week. you
have to show up at 6 or 7am on a weekend to get day-of passes. scalpers are
selling the free passes for $100. the washington post has had at least 5
major features on the show since the news broke that it was headed our way.
and of course, the jmdl provided a number of out-of-town fans in november to
see the show. i've seen it three times - with some locals, with someone from
NY and with jmdlers from various states. people talk about it at work, at
parties, etc. [not that i disagree with your basic point - the more depth
art/music/movies/et al have, often the smaller the audience for the work].
my movies for the year -
'life is beautiful'
'fast, cheap & out of control'
honorable mention - 'celebrity'
no one seems to have done the year's top albums? seems like a tradition
around this time. here goes -
Dave Matthews Band "before these crowded streets"
Patricia Barber "modern cool" (thanks les)
Smashing Pumpkins "adore"
Joy Askew "when - a bootleg"
Jeff Buckley "sketches for my sweetheart the drunk"
VA "Heritage: New Interpretations of American Roots Music" (actually 1997, but
i didn't discover it then. beautiful arrangements, fabulous violin playing,
and jane siberry singing "o shenandoah").
honorable mentions:
happy rhodes "many worlds are born tonight"
elvis & burt "painted from memory"
van morrison "philosopher's stone"
louis armstrong "the masters".
peace, barbara

Ran across a quote just now that immediately reminded me of "Shades of
Scarlett Conquering":
"The cult of southern womanhood....requires [a female] to be frigid,
passionate, sweet, bitchy, animated, and scatterbrained all at the same
time....A horrifying number of us succeed, which accounts for that popular
southern female pastime, having a breakdown."
