Randy and Ken are right about Dear Prudence being in drop D. I'm not
sure about Julia, but Blackbird is definitely in standard tuning.

There was a great editorial by Gore Vidal in this week's "Nation." Here's
a paragraph from it:
"We are now enslaved by laws. We are governed by lawyers. We create
little but litigate much. Our monuments are the ever-expanding prisons,
where millions languish for having committed victimless crimes or for
simply not playing the game of plausible deniability (AKA lying) with a
sufficiently good legal team. What began as a sort of Restoration
comedy, "The Impeachment of the President," on a frivolous, irrelevant
matter, is suddenly turning very black indeed, and all our political
arrangements are at risk as superstitious Christian fundamentalists and
their corporate manipulators seem intent on overthrowing two presidential
elections in a Senate trial. This is no longer comedy. This is
usurpation."

Hey Marilyn, thanks for the "joshua" recommendation, I've been wondering how those books are. I am also a practicing Catholic but I did not take umbrage at Catman's tirade. I fully doubt that he condemns all Catholics and/or Christians, he's just been attacked from all sides lately. I personally know Catholics and other types of Xians whose belief systems scare the piss out of me. Many of them use their religion as a smokescreen to hide and justify the evil, ignorant things they do. Just the other night I had to listen to my BROTHER, who has always been a racist, misogynist, homophobe Fuck, intoning that the Church is guided by the hand of God and actually preaching to my sister and I, whose have more Xian tendencies in our little pinkies than he does in his whole damn psyche. I still love him and all, but with ambivalence, and will only ever allow him so far into my presonal life because he is so fucked up. Whether you are a KKK member, a Baptist, or (heaven forfend!) a Buddhist really doesn't matter: you can still be an ignorant evil asshole. I sent Catman a personal mail about how sorry I am this shit is happening to him. It's two weeks later and I'm sure he and everyone else is over this by now, but I for one offer him my utmost support, no strings attached, even if he wants to put down the pope, which would, quite frankly, surprize me

Went to see RLJ 1 & 1/2 years ago and she not only came on stage two hours late, but ahe was also obviously totally wacked out on drugs and only played for an hour. I thought she was rude and disrespectful, also that she sucked, and I was glad I had never purchased any of her albums.

Many of Rickie Lee Jones' albums are fine pieces of work. I especially like
her first two.
As for her being wacked out on drugs, that's sad to hear. I thought she had
cleaned up for awhile. Several years ago Lyle Lovett played the Majestic
Theatre in San Antonio and Rickie Lee was his surprise guest. She seemed
sober and was charming, delightful, and in good voice.

She dodges the light like Blanch DuBois.
Bright colors fade away on such a sunny Sunday;
She waits for the night to fall
Then she points her pistol through the door,
And she aims at the streetlight
While the freeway hisses.
Dogs bark as the gun falls to the floor.
The streetlight's still burning;
She always misses
But the day she hits,
That's the day she'll leave.
That one little victory, that's all she needs!

It's just another sunny Monday.
She waits for the night to fall."

Subject: Little Green
Hey,
I don't know if this point has been brought up, but I have a tape from
1967 (at least that's what it says it is) of Joni Mitchell "Live in
Philadelphia" on which she plays "Little Green" (along with songs from
"Song to a Seagull" and unreleased songs, as well as ones that may be on
"For the Roses" or "Clouds"--neither of which I have).
A few people have been speculating as to when "Little Green" was written
and everything. The lyrics are only slightly different on the tape than
on the album "Blue", so I was thinking it must have been a while since
she'd written it. Anyway, at least we can be sure (if the tape date is
correct) that Joni wrote the songs well before the album "Blue" and
probably before hitting the studio for "Song to a Seagull". Oh, and the
copyright date for "Little Green" is 1967 in the "Blue" lyric sheet, so
there's our answer. She probably just left it off because she didn't
feel ready to record it and mass produce it--maybe it was just too
personal.

Subject: Video conversion, NJC
I have a bunch of International videos (PAL format) that I need converted
to VHS - U.S. format. What is a reasonable price to pay? I have tried a
couple of places in Ontario. One wants $49.99 (Canadian) plus 15% taxes
for 2 hours and under. The other place wants $30 plus taxes for 45
minutes. This can get really expensive - I have about 20 hours worth of
videos.
Also, I have about 1000 feet of Super 8 mm film that I want put on to a
video. I got a price of $50 plus taxes for 350 feet, $5.50 per additional
50 feet plus $1.50 for each splice (I have about 12 films that need to be
spliced). Is there anyone out there who does this type of work or knows
someone who charges reasonable rates.
Thanks.

your loss. not rickie's. considering the number of times joni has been rude
and disrespectful to her audiences, this seems a curious reason to jump to any
conclusions about the quality or value of rickie's work. she is brilliant,
whether you listen to her or not...and while she may have seemed "whacked out
on drugs" to you, i find that highly doubtful. maybe she had a cold. maybe
she took one to many benadryls and tried to go out and give a show for her
fans anyway. maybe she was sick, maybe she was having a rotten day. maybe
any number of things other than your speculatory and damaging observations.
that's how rumors get started and people's reputations get destroyed. rickie
lee jones has a little girl she adores and is raising alone, so i doubt very
much she is using drugs to the extent you describe, where she would risk her
artistic integrity, her repuation, her livelihood and her child...really.
that is so unfair.

I agree with Lori, Bernardette. Rickie Lee Jones may be obnoxious but she's
got it too. And I'm really sorry to hear that she's back to her old tricks.
Though maybe it's just her diction, you know. She does that deliberately,
you think she's stoned, but it's just her own personal phonetics that you're
hearing. Have you seen this video where she sings Coolsville? At the end of
the song she keeps repeating, "Hey, let me take you back to Coolsville...",
and the audience takes like ten seconds to get out of their hypnotic trance
before they applaud. It's scary. She's a November girl too, don't forget
that.

Thanks for posting this, this has been a high-profile issue here for awhile
and I hope to attend the event. My understanding is that the Playa Vista
development was formulated as part of the master plan of building the
DreamWorks studio in Playa Del Rey and the whole scheme was originally
highly touted by DW principals Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey
Katzenberg. It sounded like a wonderful idea, especially from an economic
standpoint of bringing significant more jobs into the region and generally
improving the area in many ways. In Los Angeles our economy is highly
dependent on the entertainment and aerospace industries (with the legal
industry coming in a close third ) This is a project that has
numerous positives overall. However, it would be situated near the Ballona
Wetlands, and the impact must be thoroughly assessed. The project has been
bogged down by several lawsuits and resolutions to the various issues have
been slow coming. I have no doubt that those issues can be resolved but
fear that much of the money it would take to solve them is, unfortunately,
being spent in protracted litigation. Also, during the ongoing battles,
several of the initial investors have pulled out, declared bankruptcy, etc.,
which has resulted in more setbacks and delays.
One of the few things I am militant about is the preservation of the
California coast and its wildlfe sanctuaries. On the other hand I really
hold out hope that this development can succeed because it will greatly
enrich our local economy and provide many new jobs. Hopefully, the parties
involved will eventually come to a reasonable solution that will benefit
all.
Hoping to be there and will give a full report!
