Subject: new to the list
Hello everyone,
I just signed on to the list a couple of days ago and I have been
reading the posts as a receive the digests. I am a student at Concordia
University in Montreal and of course I love Joni. The best thing is
that my girlfriend also loves Joni as do my neighbours down the hall.
We are inviting all of our best JM fan friends over in the new year for
a small and intimate JM party. I have to say that I love everything
that Joni does...it seems like everything she touches turns to gold. I
love her really old stuff (epecially LOTC) as well as the so called
"eperimental" works like Mingus, Hejira, Shadows and Light etc. I am a
big fan of jazz and experimental music anyway and when Joni tries her
hand at it, who can complain.
The definate highlight of my year was to see Joni play at the Corell
Centre in Ottawa, the horrible acoustics of a hockey stadium aside, it
was fantastic. It was nice to hear some of the new songs from TTT and
some old favorites like Amelia and the Magdeline Laundries. I for one
am very glad that Joni is talking about doing a project of Standards.
She was awesome singing Summer Time and Comes Love. Joni is a rocker, a
cruner, and an all around wicked performer and the media should be
ashamed for not giving her the attention that she deserves. Pop music
would be hard pressed to EVER produce a musician that is prolific as
Joni and I am so happy that I got to see her perform live. My
girlfriend is lucky to also have seen her perform at The day in the
garden festival this past summer. (me-still jealous).
Anyway, at the risk of posting a really long message, I just want to say
that I love Joni and am so glad that she is still going and
experimenting with new musical ideas. I anticipate her next move and
will anxiously await an album of standards...can you imagine?
Truly yours,
Chad

I feel that this kind of statement is flawed in the sense that Clinton
alledges he didn't lie under oath (at least in his Paula Jones
deposition) - that he took the narrowest meaning of "sexual relations"
and answered truthfully within that meaning. The Republicans have
chosen to ignore Clinton's legal argument and have judged him guilty of
perjury.
At every step of the way in the whole impeachment process, the
Republicans have not played fair. The Starr report portrayed Clinton in
the most damning way possible - all references to any redeeming
statements of witnesses in the inquiry were hidden in footnotes. The
requests of his lawyers for more time to make their case for him in the
Judiciary Committee were refused. The House refused to even consider
censure as an option. The Republicans have been out to get Clinton even
before he ever took office. They are rabidly partisan and it's hard for
me to look at this whole affair in any other way.
I just hope it will end soon. The man has already suffered enough
humiliation.

Who among us ISN'T tired of this? (Let's not forget that if Bill would
have told the Truth, it would long be over and he would still be prez.)
But just because it started about sex or we're tired of it doesn't mean
it should now be swept under the rug. It may have started as a personal
matter, but when ol' Bill perjured himself, lied to the Grand Jury and
(over the TV) wagged his finger in our faces and told that insulting
whopper, it became a very public and important issue directly related to
the Presidency.
I wonder how long are people going to remain hypnotized by this guy? I
submit to you all that if he were an old ugly nasty *mean* Republican,
his ass would'a been gone several months ago.
I don't give a damn what he does with his willy, tho it would be nice to
have thought he was enough in control to put his compulsions aside when
he became prez. But lying, perjuring and quite obviously using the power
and resources of his office to perpetuate the bullshit is too much for
me and (more importantly) too much for the Law.
I'm neither a democrat nor a republican. I didn't vote for Clinton or
Dole or Bush (I did vote). And I think the guy has been a reasonable
president in many respects. But lots of good people do ugly stuff every
day - and being an overall good guy or effective in one's job doesn't
mean he/she should get a free pass.
In the end, I think he'll keep his job. But in the end, I think the best
thing for him would be to get tossed. Maybe then he'd hit a real bottom
and start dealing with his shit. If nothing else, the guy is in total
denial of some real big chunks of reality.
My 2 cents........ flame retardant suit snugly in place.

Subject: The P Henry Trial
While watching the trial of P Henry unfold, I began thinking about Mary
Waddington, Joni's childhood friend who inspired the song Cherokee Louise.
You see, she really had such a hard life, what with her father abusing her
sexually, then getting sent to a reform school, and finding out, upon her
release, that the only place for her in society was with the crime families of
the town.
I was thinking -- what if this woman, now in her mid 50s, were to get a PC as a
Christmas gift, connect to the internet, find the JMDL, and post about how she
and Joni, as kids, would take a picnic lunch onto the Broadway Bridge and hang
out?
She would be attacked here, condemned as fraud and a liar.
Does she need that? Hasn't poor Mary suffered enough in her lifetime?
If anyone has any leads on how I can contact her, 'ya know, warn her to stay
away from this place, I'd appreciate it!

Even if one wants to consider his assertion that he took the narrowest
meaning of "sexual relations" and absolve him of perjury (which I think
could have been considered), he also vehemently proclaimed to the entire
world something to the effect of "I did not even know that woman." As we
soon learned that was a pure, unadulterated lie. Even though he did not
technically proclaim this under oath, it most definitely served to severely
undermine his credibility and is the one hair that cannot be split.

On the other hand, the Republicans did not entrap him to lie or get involved
with Monica in the first place. Clinton is a lawyer - he knows the laws or
should know them. His own behavior and the subsequent way he chose to
handle the problem delivered him straight into the hands of his political
enemies. And I think we would all have to agree that if the tables were
turned and Clinton was a Republican facing a Democratic House, they would do
the same thing to him. It's been the American political modus operandus
since day one in this country. When are we going to start judging people as
individuals on a case by case basis in this country, rather than on what
political party they belong to?

as the standard in writing our laws or interpreting the words spoken by our

Peace and goodwill, Mark
A woman takes her 16-year-old daughter to the doctor. The doctor says,
"Okay, Mrs. Jones, what's the problem?"
The mother says, "It's my daughter Darla, she keeps getting these cravings,
she's putting on weight and is sick most mornings."
The doctor gives Darla a good examination then turns to the mother and
says, "Well,I don't know how to tell you this but your Darla is pregnant -
about 4 months would be my guess."
The mother says, "Pregnant?! She can't be, she has never ever been left
alone with a man! Have you Darla?"
Darla says, "No mother! I've never even kissed a man!"
The doctor walked over to the window and just stares out it. About five
minutes pass and finally the mother says, "Is there something wrong out
there doctor?"
The doctor replies, "No, not really, it's just that the last time anything
like this happened, a star appeared in the east and three wise men came
over the hill. I'll be darned if I'm going to miss it this time!"

Hey Pat!! I have to agree here. My first post to the list was both bold
and naiive. I had set out on a mission to meet Joni and I asked the list for
help. Most thought I was a nut, questioned my motives, and said some pretty
harsh things. I responded from my heart, won respect from most, and thanks to
info received from this group, succeeded in my mission! That was a year and a
half ago and I'm still here. I've had so many incredible experiences since
then. I've seen Joni in concert 3 times, including during the taping of her TV

WOW Kakki!, I'm glad you spoke up, I feel the same way.
I also add...Clinton is the head of the military right? What about that
woman pilot (I forget her name) that was forced to leave the service or
face court martial for having an affair with a married man?. Excuse me,
but, I think the same rules apply to the Chief as well.
I can't get past the whole feminist backing. Here is a man who uses women
in the most degrading way. Isn't that why the feminist movement
started...to stand up against this behavior? He gives the movement what
they want with the abortion issue and yet has the biggest lack of respect
for women by treating them as nothing but sex objects. I can't support
that.
The man is a narcissistic sex addict. I disliked him from the beginning
because of that. I was married to that kind of man for 7 years. The
arrogance, the cheating, thinking of me as less than human, an object for
ejaculation purposes only. Narcissist are ugly, nasty people yet their
charm can be very deceiving. I think he should be psychologically
evaluated!
"Individuals with this disorder show an exaggerated sense of
self-importance and preoccupation with receiving attention. These persons
are grandiose and expect and demand special treatment from others. They
typically disregard the rights and feelings of others, especially if it
helps serve their own goals. Their sense of entitlement is frequently a
source of astonishment to others, although they themselves view their
lavish expectations as merely just dues. A central element in the
narcissistic personality pattern is an inability to take the perspective of
another...in more general terms, they lack empathy. ...they do not seek
therapy because they view themselves as nearly perfect and in no need of
personal change." DSM 3R axis II, cluster B. There is no cure.

would be really interesting!

Wow! Hi Stacey!
About a month ago I saw your book "The Joni Mitchell Companion" listed as a
"special order" item on one of the online book stores and was really
curious about it. (I can't remember whether it was Amazon, B&N or Borders)
Unfortunately there was no desciption of the book so I did a search on your
other books and found a good description of "The Paul Simon Companion" which
included the table of contents. The Paul Simon book looked like it was
fantastic and I was wondering when we would hear more about the Joni book
from someone. What a surprise to have you appear here on the list! There
is a wealth of information here in the group - you've come to the right
place. Welcome!

This is another thing that boggles my understanding - the stolid support
and uncritical defense of him by the very ones who have fought so long and
hard to champion the rights of women. I truly cannot comprehend the
contradiction when his treatment and lack of regard for women as individuals
has been made so obvious over time. I can completely understand if someone
believes what he does is his business - but why is there not one iota of
corrresponding belief in the rights of the women involved in his situations?
They are all routinely dismissed as "sluts", "trailer trash" and worse. It
makes me feel like we have not evolved at all as a culture and are really
still living in the Dark Ages.
The official description of the narcissistic personality from the DSM is
chillingly true. I also have had close encounters with narcissists and
their brilliant charm is indeed a horribly deceiving mask.
Another thought I've had on this whole matter is the defense of lying
because "everyone lies" and "all politicians lie." Even if we accept that
as the hard truth that we must live with, do we really want to accept and
condone it so blithely and uncritically? Probably 99% of the good that
happens on this earth derives from hope built on a sense of trust. (I'll
give a 1% to "white lies" that function to smooth over relationships and
prevent hurt feelings). When we condone lying at the highest level we move
another foot closer to making our society into one giant shark tank.

Kakki - I'm sure it IS a dilemma for most women. Clinton has championed more
women's issues and appointed more women to cabinet posts than any other
president, yet his "admiration" for women as we know also slides in a more
degrading direction as well.

Why do I get this funny intuition that those actions had a lot more to do
with Hillary's influence, the goals of his party and the sign of the times,
rather than Bill's heartfelt beliefs?
You could also say that Jim Bakker brought more souls to Jesus than any
other preacher before him. What did it ultimately prove about him as an
individual man?

Ginger Spice ON TOUR doll (they are about the size of a barbie and apparently
very hard to find) PLEASE PLEASE buy it for me and email me immediately. i
will wire you whatever you paid, plus a pretty little reward for an
undisclosed amount. my little girl wanted one for christmas, from santa no
less, and try as i might, it was just impossible. so i bought her all the
other 4 and am leaving her a note from good old santy claus explaining that he
had a little trouble with his elves this year, but will get one to her as soon
as he can. so if ANY of you can help, i will be forever in your debt and my

Welcome Stacey!
If you check out Wally's web page, you'll find loads of great info for your
book. There were a few articles in Musician Magazine that I liked, but I
can't recall when they were published. I'm sure someone here will know. When
do you expect your book will be done?

I just wanted to say thanks to all of you that have sent me messages to
welcome me to the list. Happy hollidays to everyone!!!!
Also, I wanted to say that all of you in the USA are very lucky to have
been able to experience the entire Concert on Television as we only saw
a small snippet of it on the CBC. The best part of it though were the
shots to the paintings at the beginning and the end of each commercial
break. Also cool was when Joni danced around with some people when her
band!!! I have heard that the concert may be or has been released on
video, but I can't find it anywhere. I wish I knew if it has been so I
can get a hold of it. I would like to see the entire concert.
Anyway, have a great Christmas and New Year!

Howdy Siquombites!
After listening to Taming The Tiger at least once almost every day since it
was released I just had a Joni moment that I'm a little embarassed to share.
I loaned TTT to a friend for a week and just played it real loud on a good
stereo (I usually play it on my PC or in the car). To my delight I
discovered I now know most words by heart and broke into the freest
harmonizing ever imagined possible. Never have I experienced such pleasure
from music! Halfway through Stay In Touch tears began flowing that didn't
stop until Tiger Bones. The deep subtlety of her percussive chords, airy
arrangements and silky voice overwhelmed me with love and admiration. Joni
has never sounded, played or looked better! TTT is my favorite album and
probably will be till her next one.
But I usually skip Lead Balloon the way I did Blue Hotel Room....
Happy Holy Days!

Hi all,
Now that I'm up in my mountain retreat, and able to really let go of all the
day to day craziness that a single mother of 4 boys encounters, and completely
relax, I just wanted to take the time to say a few things.
First of all, John, CONGRATULATIONS on graduating from nursing school!!!! That
is a big accomplishment, and I'm so glad you've shared that with all of us.
WELCOME to:
Luke and Jennifer- It's so great to have more of the younger generation on the
list,
and into Joni! (God- that last statement made me feel OLD!!!!! LOL!)
Chad- Sounds like a GREAT New Year's party! Wish I could be there!
and Stacey- I can't wait to hear more about your book!!
and anyone else that I inadvertently forgot to welcome before this.
Thank you to the entire JMDL for this past year:
Thank you for the personal support- (sending out a huge amount of postcards
from
all over the world for my son's collection when he really
needed a boost)
Thank you to all those wonderful, crazy people that trecked to MA over Labor
Day
to meet, party, and sing Joni on my "backyard stage".
Thank you to all those that were so patient, generous, and kind when I offered
to
dub the video tape trees for the list
Thank you for all the incredible friends I have made through this list.
and most of all, THANK YOU to Les and Wally, for providing a plethera of
information about Joni that I would have NEVER have known otherwise, and for
providing a forum to find (FINALLY, after 30 years!) others that share my
passion for Joni's music.
Many blessings and love to all of you in this holiday season.
Hugs,

jesus christ (happy birthday) i am dying to know--what did p henry say?!!!! I
missed the tales--must have deleted them without reading them, and now what
with all the controversy i am so intrigued. I would have been anyway I can
tell. Will someone please dig it up and post it (phenry's tale) to me?
Please?
Also, my nephew who is 14 and discovering so many things in the world, is also
discovering all the great groups and (musical) figures of the late 60's.
Jimi, Janis, Jim, Led Zepplin, etc...Jimi is paramount to him and he has been
exposed--especially since i moved back to my hometown last january--to
quiteabita Joni via me, and frankly he has been for the most part only
politely interested. But lately, thanks to the vh1 or mtv spot where joni
talks about janet's 'don't it always seem to go' (is that what that's
called?), he has expressed interest in joni. (He thought she was a recent
arrival on the music scene, until I set him straight on that!) Anyway, I told
him that Joni tells a great little story of when she and Jimi hung out in some
Canadian city where they both were playing and he was really into her music,
and talked about his being tired of his guitar as huge penis image (at least
that's how I interpreted it)--and I was wondering, where did joni say that?
Is it somewhere on Wally's page? I can't remember where i read it--does
anyone else remember? If so and you don't mind writing to tell I would be most
appreciative.
OK that's all--sorry so wordy--holidays have exhausted me, plus i just tend to
run on--am working on that, but progress can be slow. Merry Christmas to all.
Much love, ray
