Happy holidays everyone!
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Have A Nice Kwanzaa, enjoy the winter
solstice, Have a good Voodoo Magic Celebration, have a joyous virgin
sacrifice, or whatever else your chosen "holiday" may entail. I will be
celebrating the Christmas holiday and basking in the rural bliss of the
Village of Strabane, PA.
I relish the idea of being in a town that is not consumed with our
President's "situation."
I will be willfully disconnected from the phones, internet and snail mail,
so you will not hear from me again until sometime next week! However, I
refuse to set up one of theose annoying "auto -responders" to tell you I am
away.
See ya!

SOUNDS great ric, but do you REALLY think the next wave of clowns will
be any better than this wave? I don't - I think that it's not a change
of people, it's a change of process that's needed.
Here's a crazy idea...Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't this whole
"representative" thing come to be because we were an agrarian economy
back in the 1700's/1800's and it simply wasn't possible for the people
to gather and debate/vote on issues? So we elected one of our own to
speak for us?
Well, simply put, that was then, this is now! We're connected, via
phone, via computer, we can all debate and vote electronically or by
800 number, we don't NEED these Ying-yangs in DC to spend our money
and make self-serving decisions on OUR behalf...
Think about the birthday card - we brainstormed, we debated, we voted,
we made & delivered the card, without having to hold a series of inane
meetings and tacking on a lot of unrelated pork to the "Birthday Card
Bill".
Sometimes when you get totally lost, you have to go back home and
start again on a different route - that's where America is right now,
IMO. The GOOD news is that it CAN be done! It's like psychiatrists

WANT to change ;~D

like when I heard Don McLean sing "Vincent" and "American Pie" when
Don was unknown and couldn't get a record deal! Just sitting in a
coffeehouse with about twenty other people, hearing those songs, and
feeling this unbelievable sense that history was being made before my

Funny thing, the more I hear from her on this and other divisive issues that arise from time to time, the more I realize that hers is good advice to follow. She's sensibility central. Everyone should read what she has written on the 'Pat' issue and just hope that we get to hear some good stories for the holidays.
It could be worse - Remember that crank who told us about a year ago that he had had sex with Joni, where was it, in some drive-in theatre or something? That was ugly.

> I am not impressed by fame or famous people.

I agree in theory with the above statement to a point. When I first
got into Joni, I really didn't know exactly how famous she was.
Instead, I thought of her as someone who was big in the early 70's, and
then kind of faded into the woodwork. Of course, it didn't take long to
realize that I was way off base with this one! Anyway, I could give a
rat's ass how famous Joni is or isn't, but at the same time, I still
think it is fascinating that Joni, the Saskatchewan girl who hangs out
at Earls in Saskatoon and shops at the same stores that I do when she is
in the province, and attends the local fiddling and jigging competition
when she is here for winterfestival, is also the same person who could
actually call up James Taylor if she so felt like it, and has Madonna
jumping tables to talk to her at parties. It is not her fame that
impresses me, but rather the way in which she has used her talent to
escape the prairies and produce a body of work that is recognized around
the globe, all the while still retaining her roots and her connection to
her home. It is this duality, the ways in which she moves between these
two worlds, that impresses me. Thus, when someone like P. Henry posts
stuff about knowing Joni way back when, I find it interesting to read
these accounts. And, if they are or are not true, well, that is
something that we can decide for ourselves. Moreover, if somehow I knew
Joni, and was there while she wrote "Facelift" or something, damn right
I would share it with everyone! I haven't paid that close of attention
to the posts, so I can't say whether or not they are true or a crock,
but really, if we don't believe a word of it, instead of attacking, we
could just pay it no attention. Anyway, just thought I would do this
post since people are getting all stressed about these posts of P.
Henry. Happy Holidays!

Subject: Introduction + Tape
Hello everyone!
I just wanted to introduce myself to you all on the list. I'm a
17-year-old student in Washington, USA. I've been listening to Joni's
music for about four years now. That doesn't sound like very long, but
it seems like it to me. Now for the really embarrassing part--I first
really hear Joni on the "Friends" Soundtrack. I loved her voice and the
song (which I was vaguely familiar with already). I bought "Ladies of
the Canyon" and really went crazy over it. I think I bought "Blue" next
(and you all must know how I felt about those songs) and then "Song to a
Seagull" and "Court and Spark." Now I also have "Dog Eat Dog",
"Turbulent Indigo", "Taming the Tiger", "Hits" and "Misses". Eventually
I know I'll have them all, but I like to take it slowly and enjoy each
album. I have a lot of catching up to do, though.
My favorite albums are probably "Song to a Seagull" and "Turbulent
Indigo" if I could only choose two. I love all the songs on the both
the albums. I feel the same way about the other other albums, but those
two really make me feel something. Anyway, I have been exploring the
Joni Mitchell web site for a couple of years and only just discovered
the list. It's great to hear from other fans via the internet because
there aren't many in my age group and I'm sure none my age in my small
town. Joni's different from other musicians to me because I just know
I'll be a fan for life.
I was also wondering if anyone would be willing to make a copy of Joni's
'98 concert at The Gorge in Washington. I wanted to go to that concert,
but I just couldn't make it happen. Now one of my big goals in life is
to see Joni perform live! I know she doesn't tour much so I'm really
hoping I'll get a chance to see her and regretting that I was unable to
see her at the Gorge. So I was hoping someone on the list could make me
a tape copy. I'm just starting out trading, so I only have a few
recordings (mostly 10,000 Maniacs, but I'll soon be getting Joni's "Live
in Philedelphia" w/ James Taylor tape from 1967). I'm really reliable
though and if I had nothing you wanted I could just send you one (or
two) blank tapes to compesate. Please e-mail me if you would be willing
to do this for me (LucasBC@webtv.net). Sorry this post is so long, I'll
try to break them up in the future.
Thanks for granting your ears to me and I'm looking forward to further
conversations!

much nicer than is the norm around here to a newbie with
something special to recall in the zero-degrees-of-
separation-department.
And while we're carping about the boys upstairs, when the
hell is "Kakki" that Kween of Mean going to get to take off
her halo?!...we all know how her real personality is...what a
stretch playing the "voice of reason" and "flowers of deep feeling"
on JM's behalf! When do *I* get to be nice for a change?

Great stuff, Stevie!
Well, I do see why Geffen (he is scarfing up Reprise before next
quarter, isn't he?) is using your girley guile and spin doctoring
skills to set the pace for the New Year and give us some
better fodder!
And all those mass "resignations" last month by those "bandwidth
bandits" firings was a great face-saving campaign, don't you think?
Even though we probably miss most of those "Joni ain't so great"
farters, heads did need to roll...
>See, I set this up even before the promotion became official, and

When are they going to fly me out for another one of those god-awful,
boring "meet and greets" anyway? I would rather do Joan's handwashies
up at the cabin in the sub-freezing temps, than make her 30 year fans line
up for those never-ending photo ops with her...sheesh, you'd
think they'd give me a break here. Maybe you could put a word in
at the next happy hour? That last devoted-fans-at-the-Ritz-in-Atlanta thing
nearly did me in....

When did you get that surgery, hon? Coming up on a couple of
year's now? Great boobs....who did 'em? My Cooper's Droopers
are needing attention. Maybe I could combine a consult with
a visit to you "guys" out there. But tell Joan I am sick to death
of those 4 hour lunches at The Daily Grill. I got botulism there last time.
Well, have a marvelous holiday, dear, and please, please, please
don't tell anyone that the new Joni tape from the PPView special
is going for a pittance at Walmart alongside Garth's swill...

Welcome Luke! Don't be embarrassed about how you discovered Joni - just
be thankful that you did! And the good news is her best stuff is still
out there waiting to be discovered by you; For The Roses, Hissing of
Summer Lawns, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, and her masterpiece Hejira,
not to mention the others I left out! And be sure not to overlook her
live records, especially Shadows & Light - it's spectacular. Looks like
you'll need to pad that college loan a little ;~D.

I wish I could look at humankind with as much optimism and faith as Bob
does. I used to believe in "the ideal" but now it's old cynical me.
A total democracy won't work either. Hell, we can't get anyone to vote!
Even my daughter, who voices her complaints and gets an earful from her mom
about civic responsibility, won't register to vote. I can honestly say that
in my college classes there were very few students who voted, even when
there was a very heated city vote on human dignity. So.. I don't think that
this apathy will end. Americans don't want to have to *think*. So lazy.. So
sad.

Now that I've got my year-end bonus from Reprise safely cashed and deposited
in the bank, I can spill all. I have received a very lucrative offer
elsewhere in the field of dispute resolution. Some lawyer named Nicholas
contacted me to act as Chief Mediator in the imminent impeachment
proceedings against Santa Claus. It seems Santa has repeatedly lied to his
constituents this entire year by promising each of them a Furby in their
stocking on December 25th, even though he knew as early as last January that
this was a complete impossibility. We are trying to structure a very
complex settlement at this point and hope to get him off the hook with at
least a censure, if not a full pardon. But if it falls through, he will
definitely be reindeer pate.
So, my spot at Reprise is up for grabs at this point, if you want it.
And "Steve" - Big congrats - finally you've made it to the fun side of the
Org chart!

I always figured she did such a nice version of it on MOA, that she decided to
leave it at that. Surely it wasn't a crass business decision!? (If you want
this song, you gotta buy the whole album). I prefer the first explanation, but
maybe someone else knows better.

my dear colin -
having worked for an explosives company for several years (i don't work
there anymore), i think a blasting cap ennema is a little too quick. try
making some nice brownies for your neighbors. just make sure you make them
with Exlax. crush up some TUMS and sprinkle on top. i'm SURE they'll have
an "explosive" time ;-) and if you could only get them to eat some hot
chili peppers ...

having worked for the company that makes Exlax for several years (I dont work
there anymore) We actually did the brownie deal once. A guy we worked with
had a habit of eating other peoples food out of the breakroom refrigerator.
We left a nice plate of brownies for him in there, they disappeared.

Hey Brett,
So sorry to hear of your tape loss (GLAD you got the car back!).
More than happy to dub the Vancouver show again (which simon graciously sent to
me knowing that I'd trekked out there to see that show).
Let me know if you need all/part of tape tree #7, can accommodate you there as
well!
Best,
-Kenny
Got the car back. All the tapes were gone - except a recent recording of
Jewel's first album. A tasteless, cruel cretin - chucks my JM tapes and
listens to Jewel while driving around in my car.
I'll never replace my lost old friends, but, with a little help from one of
you, I could get TT#7. Would one of you charitable souls agree to record it
for me? And Kenny, the Vancouver show - please!
Thanks.
Brett
