Hyde a hypocrite. Livingston a hypocrite. Hardly a surprise -- bigotry and
hypocrisy are always going hand in hand.
Incredible -- the Republicans are so obsessed with removing Pres. Clinton
from office, they even forget their American patriotism.
Re: Baghdad Bombing.
The U.S. and GB hardly had another choice at this point of time. All other
efforts have failed, as Saddam apparently thought he'd be able to endlessly
continue his provocations. The allies' credibility was at stake. One could
argue that it's cynical to sacrifice human lives for maintenance of
credibility, but lack of credibility also can and ultimately will result in
loss of lives, as criminals and terrorists like Saddam are encouraged to go
ahead with their evil plans. In ethics, all lives are equal, but in
politics, leaders have a duty to protect the lives of those for whom they
are responsible. Whether the US and its allies like it or not, they are
responsible not only for their own citizens, but also for maintaining world
peace and stability. They better live up to it, or ultimately their own
citizens will have to pay the price.
This has nothing to do with Clinton's sex affair. It was both necessary and
inevitable.

I've got the CD called simply "Rufus Wainwright" - as far as I know, this
is the only one he has released so far. I love it! He has a great voice,
plays very tasty piano and and writes great songs with strong melodies.
The arrangements are very varied, using a lot of different instruments and
sounds.
I also saw him play the first track from the CD on British TV, just him on
piano. Sounded great!

His mother is Kate McCarrigle and father Loudon Wainright III. His sister, who sings on Rufus' debut cd (a
stunner) is named Martha and also a very accomplished singer/songwriter (genes is genes.) They all appear on the
new cd Family. Rufus is destined for stardom if he keeps his wits about him. In the new Rolling Stone Sarah
McLaughlin names him as the best new performer. His style, unique and sensual, has been dubbed "popera." And
yes, I find the comparison to Jeff Buckley appropriate. Though Jeff never knew his father Tim, and Rufus is
quite close to his family. You can see Rufus in the new holiday Christmas commercial playing and singing at the
piano. And, oh, he is definitely a gay heart throb!

Sorry, I'm American, but here's my 2 cents anyway.
I don't like Clinton & I'm sick of it all. I think Hussein should be taken
down but, I feel this bombing shit is ridiculous! Step back and look at it
this way: Other than antagonizing with his cat & mouse games, Hussein has
not made any moves of aggression lately. The U.S. & allies I think have
enough satellites & spies & eyeballs on this guy to the point where he
can't take a crap without us knowing. If there were suspicious movements,
then I'd bomb the F*** out of him. Better yet, go in there & take HIM out.
What B.S. about the ethics of we can't do that --it's ethical to bomb
innocent people?! "They" killed Kennedy, "They" can kill Hussein too. I
see this attack as nothing but pure aggression on the part of the US. If
it was a republican pres. doing this...we'd be screaming for impeachment!
People were upset with Bush & desert storm & Hussein HAD been aggressive.
I think Clinton should be impeached for his military stupidity! That's the
difference between someone who has experience in the military & one who ran
away from it. Now he's wagging his dick at the whole world not just in the
oval office!

around here, so I'll provide you a list of ones that I know. Some are
web coventions, others home-grown by the JMDL. Then you can see if
you're on track ... I guess.
NJC -- No/Non-Joni Content
SCJ -- Some Joni/Small Joni Content
VLJC -- Very Little Joni Content
CMIARS -- "Chalk Mark In A Rainstorm"
DJRD -- "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter
SIQUOMB -- "She Is Queen Undisputably Of Mind Beauty", used to refer to
joni.
DED -- "Dog Eat Dog"
C&S -- "Court and Spark"
TI -- "Turbulent Indigo" (not Texas Instruments, as one might
suspect);-)
IMHO -- In My Humble Opinion (sometimes IMO)
BTW -- By The Way
LOL -- Lots of Laughs
ROTFL -- Rolling On the Floor Laughing
NP -- Seems you've got this one right!
jimdle -- a list member
BTW, love JT's "Sweet Potato Pie" and most eveything else he's ever
recorded. IMHO, he would be on my NP list almost as much as the
SIQUOMB, which is saying something for a jimdle! See how much fun this
can be!
Happy listing!

seeing as I knew Joni as a personal friend between '66-'68 , I know LOTS of
'date-specific facts' and would be glad to field questions to fill in
blanks you may have...
eg: " << Welcome back to the list, P.H. I'm in
Detroit...still. Were you at The Raven

Terry
hi terry,
thanks! *S* no... though I did perform at the Raven in those days when
Herb Cohen ran it, mostly thanks to friend Ron Coden... and while I did
spend an evening or two at the Chessmate with Joni and Chuck during that
rare period of time when they were still playing together, I only actually
performed with her, aside from jam sessions, at the Cellar in Port Huron,
birthing place of the SDS and the infamous "Port Huron Statement", where I
was the "entertainment mgr."/house performer, many times on the same bill
and once or twice in the same set.
one song I recall performing together was her version of "San Francisco
Bay Blues", complete with kazoos! (ie: "...thought I heard my baby call,
the way she used to call my name, 'HEY STUPID!'..."). I had the singular
pleasure of being personally taught by her how to play "Urge" (then, her
favorite of all her songs) "Game", "Wizard Of Is" and one she wrote about
Stephen Stills called "Just Like Me", among others, all of which became
standards in my own sets from then on... she also included me in some of
her songwriting sessions and one song I participated in writing was "Both
Sides"...
stories? oh, don't get me started! *L* perhaps sometime I can tell you the
rather comical tale of how I first met Joni... then there's the one when
she sent the reprise boys to sign me... and I turned them down...
was I 'in love' with her? of course! it may sound trite but I have to tell
you, Roberta Joan Anderson was always a tremendous person and a real star,
long before the rest of the world had a clue... see, the last time I saw
Joni was in Detroit in '68..."

Well, I have a confession to make.... I am basically a Rosie clone
when it comes to television. Growing up in the 70's and 80's, the tv
was always on, and I can recite themes from every damn show I watched...
if you ever want the words to the Maude theme song, you know who to
ask! Also, a childhood of schoolhouse rocks has taught this Canadian
boy all about how a bill becomes a law in the U.S.! Like Rosie, I love
all the old shows for sentimental reasons. I would kill to have Nick at
Nite in Canada so I could stroll down memory lane. However, there isn't
much on t.v. that I like anymore. I faithfully watch Simpsons, King of
the Hill, Friends, Dharma and Greg (love that Jenna Elfman!), PO5,
Oprah, My so-called Life reruns (my alltime fave show) and, yes, I like
Dawson's Creek, just to pretend that my teen years were as fashionable
as theirs! Also, we usually watch Martha Stewart at night, just to get
a good laugh at her... more ironic comedy there than anything I have
ever seen! I admire people who can give up television, but being the
pop culture junkie I am, I don't think I could ever unplug it totally.
I still read a book or two a week, and I think that the key for
television is to try am get your priorities straight. If/when we have
children, I don't think we will let them be raised in front of the t.v.
as we were. At the same time, I find it interesting that people of my
generation seem to share this whole history of television. Instead of
actually "doing things" in our youth, we sat like zombies in front of
our televisions, wondering if Rhoda and Joe would ever get back
together, or if Tootie would ever get rid of the rollerskates! Anyway,
it really fascinates me that the 60's generation stretched their wings
and actually "lived" life, while the children of the 70's and 80's ended
up making sure that we "NBC there, let's all be there!" I did end up
going through a television withdrawl when I was about 13. I lived in
the Fraser Valley until I was 12, where we had all the American
stations. Then, when I moved to Saskatchewan, American television still
hadn't made it there, so I basically was forced for a year to find
something else to do with my time. However, once American t.v. was
available here, it was interesting to see how quickly people became
glued to the tube.
Well, just had to comment on the integration of televison in pop
culture. Have a good weekend, y'all!

Lori,
I was referring to the (NJC) and NP "codes" that sometimes appear on
messages posted here. I seem to remember that someone asked about them the
other day and was told to scour the archives to find their meaning. I
didn't want the huddled masses by simply asking if what I thought they
meant by asking if (NJC) meant this and/or NP meant that.
I didn't want to blurt out a question/statement is (NJC) meant No Joni
Content and NP meant Now Playing. I just wanted to know if I was correct
in my thinking. Now, according to Don, I was close.
Sometiimes beating around the bush is not such a good tack, and I guess my
poorly and cryptically and disquisedly (is that a word?!) worded search for
confirmation was ill-advised and clumsy. So sorry.
Don......Back to James Taylor...in my younger days I went to see JT in
concert for 18 straight years, the best one was on Boston Common in the
early 80s. My date and I flew to Boston, got a picnic basket, wine,
cheese, bread, sat on the ground and listened to James sing. Damm fine
event! Next day we went up to the White Mts in New Hampshire. Oooooo, I
loved that area! So pretty up there.

occurs to me that this Laura Nyro song has some relevance this
Christmas.
CHRISTMAS IN MY SOUL
Come young braves
Come young children
Come to the Book of Love with me
Respect your brothers & your sisters
Come to the Book of Love
I know it ain't easy
But we're gonna look for a better day
Come young braves
Come young children
I love my country
As it dies
In war and pain
Before my eyes
I walk the streets
Where the disrespect has been
The sins of politics
The politics of sin
The heartless mess that darkens my soul on Christmas
Red and silver
On the leaves
Fallen white snow
Runs softly through the trees
Madonnas weep
For wars of Hell
They blow out the candles
And haunt Noel
The missing love that rings through the world on Christmas
Black Panther brothers
Bound in jail
Chicago Seven
In the justice scale
Homeless Indian
Of Manhattan Isle
All God's sons have gone to trial
And all God's love is out of style on Christmas
Now the time has come to fight
Laws in the Book of Love burn bright
People we must win
For thee, America
Her dignity
For all the high court world to see on Christmas
Christmas in my soul
Christmas in my soul
Christmas in my soul
Come young braves
Come young children
Christmas in my soul
Christmas
in my
soul....
Joy to this world.....

It's been an odd holiday season for me. I usually try to keep a
positive attitude for the holidays, keeping in mind the spirit that was
the original motivation for all of it. I've been having some difficulty
this year. It started with a bizarre bus accident that happened here in
Seattle several weeks ago. A passenger shot a public transit driver
while a city bus was crossing a high bridge. The bus went through the
guard rail and over the side, damaging an apartment building on the way
down. The driver died on the roof of that building, the assailant
turned the gun on himself & one of the passengers also died. It was
disturbing. Now we have bombs in Iraq and a Congress that apparently
has no regard for the will of the American people. So keeping the
holiday spirit has been a struggle.
Haven't had much to say lately. Sorry to take up bandwidth with this
but it sort of feels good to get it off my chest.

In the New York Times today, Janet Maslin gave a glowing review of a new
romantic comedy called "You've Got Mail" starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan
and written by Nora Ephron. She mentions that Ephron "makes Kathleen's
[Meg Ryan's character] sensibility clear by having her quote Joni Mitchell
. . . ."

I also have the Sweet Old World CD, it's another great CD.
This week's People's magazine lists the 1998 best 5 albums, guess who's on
top, that's right - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. I remember reading a quote
written about Lucinda in a recent article - "she is the best unknown
singer/songwriter...."
