Subject: Season's Greetings/ Mark Isham
Hi everyone.
For those in the Northern Hemisphere, enjoy the wonderful Winter weather
(my favourite season) and for those in the Southern Hemisphere, take care
in the sun and enjoy the hissing of Summer lawns. It has been an
extraordinarily wet Winter and Summer was slow to come on in Canberra but,
there have been a few very hot days lately. I am priveledged to have
recently moved into a new apartment building that has full air-conditioning
and a swimming pool. I (and my friends) are just starting to take advantage
of it. We have been having a few lazy evenings lately. Although I play a
variety of music when my friends come over, I usually throw a Joni CD on
somewhere in there and a 19 year old friend of mine has started to become
familiar with Joni's music and is really getting into it now. She was only
into grunge music previously. Now she asks me to play Joni when she comes
over. If you think it's strange to like Joni and Massive Attack, her taste
is more like, Pulp, Tool, Korn, Marilyn Manson, etc. Then again, the Indigo
Girls site Hüsker Dü as their faves and Tori Amos is into Nirvana.
I am curious how many students are on this list. I understand that students
in the Northern Hemisphere are about to go on a break. We have been on end
of year break for some weeks now and don't go back until the end of
February.
Thanks to Willie from Alabama, I now have a copy of the Joni PPV special.
Thanks very much, Willie. I hope you like the tape I sent you. I have only
seen Joni on video once or twice before and never realised how good she is
at storytelling. Her story of her holiday to BC was wonderful. She even
does impressions. I am constantly amazed at the caliber of musician that
Joni Mitchell attracts. She brings her fans' attention to musicians who
might otherwise be lost to obscurity. I would never have been interested in
Pat Metheny if it wasn't for Joni. On the other hand, I have been a fan of
Mark Isham ever since I discovered the Windham Hill label and bought the
soundtrack to Mrs Soffel. His haunting penny whistle and synth sounds weave
images of the snow covered forests of New England and southern Ontario.
When I bought that album, I went out and bought a penny whistle (costing a
little more than a penny these days) but, never learned how to play. It's
amazing that such a simple instrument can have such a soothing and
beautiful sound. Then I realised that he plays sax too. Mark Isham went off
on the PPV special. What a talent! One thing confuses me though; Joni
pronounced his name, "Mark Eye-sham". I had been pronouncing it with a
short 'I'. Which is correct? It seemed like a pretty straightforward name
to me.
I was also a little disappointed by Joni's disrespect for her Hall of Fame
Award. I could understand that attitude if it was an award based on sales
but, this was a recognition by her peers and the industry for achievement
in music over time. Graham Nash must have been embarrassed. Would she react
the same way to any accolades from her fans directly too? Does Joni
Mitchell really care what her fans think?
For those who have asked about the Tori Amos cover of A Case of You, it was
released in Australia on a special 2CD edition of Under The Pink.

Colin,
I spent my 40th year in the shrink's office dealing with that one! Good
News! This is the age were you can tell people to go F**k themselves if
they don't like the way you behave!
I personally like being a perpetual teen with life experience & wisdom & no
hormonal roller coaster. My 14 year old tells me to quit dressing like
her. I told her I've dressed in jeans & T-shirts since I was her age & I'm
not gonna dress like an old fart for her. She does tell me I'm "cool"
however. I took her & her friends to see Aerosmith last night-what fun!
Last time I saw them, I hadn't even met her father yet! As I was watching
them on stage, I thought "look at these guys; they're what close to 50 and
still have it like they did in their 20's". They were enjoying themselves.
My cousin turned me on to the Marx brothers; I had never seen their movies
before. I behave like that a lot of the time & people think I'm nuts. Who
cares!
There is no such thing as normal. What you feel & think is who you are.
Trying to fit into the image of the generation before us will only make you
crazy. We are a whole nother breed! That stuff is only an illusion. Just
be you and find peace with yourself! After all, LIFE DOES BEGIN AT 40!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Yes, I thinkshe does care what we think.
Her disresepect for the Hall of Fame award had more to do with the Hall of
Fame's blatant "fund-raising," which required a large donation from the
recipient.

First: My daughter has about the same taste in music as your friend, steals
my Beatle CD's & hubby's Pink Floyd. She knows every Joni song (She's been
listening since the womb). I hope someday Joni's music grabs her too.
Second: R&R Hall of Fame: ooohhh can o' worms; I like it! However, living
in the city that brings you the Hall of Fame, I understand her contempt!
The rock hall is a joke! It's poorly done. There are people inducted that
I think don't belong. Finally, I think Joni's contempt has to do with the
fact that Duh, it took them HOW LONG??? to include her. I mean geees,
she's a pioneer, she should have been inducted right along with Dylan.
Carol King isn't even in for her music only her "influence".
If you go into any other museum, there is a natural flow of events. Art &
history for example present the history chronologically. You can go from
prehistoric to present in these places. Not so with the rock hall. It's a
jumbled mess!
Also, I visited before & a year after Joni was inducted; all they have for
her is one computer where you can here "Help Me" another with an interview
and last, a blurb of her in (an early) concert on a film they made. So
much for induction.

The cookbook would not have been complete without them! The Man To Man
Chauvinistic Bachelor Slob Spaghetti story is really funny - maybe Joni can
use it as inspiration for a funny song! And the Leadfoot Melvin's Hotwired
French Toast sounds really good - it's actually high on my list of recipes I
want to try.
In case anyone would like a copy of the JMDL Cookbook MS Word (W95 version)
document, just let me know and I'll email it to you. The pages are in the
European A4 format which is slightly longer and narrower than the USA 8-1/2
x 11 paper size, so some recipes which fit on one European page may need two
pages for 8-1/2 x 11. USA JMDLers might want to check the page breaks
before printing and maybe reduce the font size so that all of the recipes
and bios only require one page each.
Friday afternoon I'm taking off for a couple of weeks. In case I don't get
a chance before then, I wish everyone Happy Holidays and a great New Year's

John Lind proposed...
OK here's a thread:
If Tom Waits did an album of all Joni songs and Joni did an album of all
Waits songs what should the play lists be?
OK John, I did my homework last night and have my lists and I enjoyed
it although I think you and I will be the only contributers...
PS - I assembled my list before I read yours...
So here it is, my double CD "Tom does Joni/Joni does Tom". The cover
pictures them both dressed in drag - not a stretch for Joni as she's
already done it on DJRD. Tom's got his dirty wool cap on along with a
tacky red wig and some pink chiffon gown. Both have cigs danglin' from
their lip. And the songs are something like this:
Tom does Joni
1. Otis & Marlena (an obvious choice - these are very Waits-ish
characters)
2. Off Night Backstreet (some lyrics would have to be tinkered with to
make some of these work, but nothing major)
3. Nathan La Franeer (another Waits character, he loves cabdrivers)
4. That Song About The Midway (Lots of carnival themes in Tom's stuff)
5. Barangrill
6. The Jungle Line
7. Blue Motel Room
8. Furry Sings The Blues (I can hear "He points a bony finger at you
and says 'I don't like you'"Joni sings it in the same gravelly voice.
9. God Must Be A Boogie Man
10.Ethiopia (Tom's voice can be so poignant and I think he would
especially bring out the tragedy in this one
11.Sunny Sunday (This just sounds like another Waits character/Blanche
DuBois-type
Joni does Tom
1. Invitation to the Blues
2. Looking For the Heart of Saturday Night
3. Soldier's Things (Same comment as Ethiopia above...)
4. The Briar and The Rose (OK, I admit I cheated - Holly Cole's
version of this is so pretty I want to hear Joni do it
5. Blind Love
6. I Wish I Was in New Orleans (For Michael Paz ;~D)
7. Potters Field (Tom's little symphony like "Judgement of the moon &
stars, Paprika Plains, etc.)
8. Please Call Me Baby (Anybody could cover this one, it's a great
song with this lyric:
If I exorcise my devils,
Well, my angels may leave too
When they leave they're so hard to find"
9. Blue Valentines (Lots of "Blue" titles from both artists)
10. I Hope that I don't fall in Love with you
Close the CD out with the both of them duetting on "I Never Talk to
Strangers"
Cut - Print it!
Thanks again John for letting me indulge myself - Tom & Joni work a
lot of the same territory, Tom's usually more of a participant while
Joni casts herself more as an observer of the human condition. Both
write gorgeous melodies, brilliant emotional lyrics; they can make you
laugh out loud one minute & break your heart the next.

to watch quality films are rare in Greenville, S.Carolina. However, I
did manage to see "The Truman Show", "Saving Private Ryan" & "Your

had to drive 30 minutes to a neighboring small town with a film club

ruined him a little. "Something About Mary" was hilarious and a fun

Well, I guess it's time I tried my hand at this. So here goes:
Twas the week before Christmas
On the jmdl
And nobody's posting
But that's just as well
Some new folks have joined
Others left in a huff ...
Over large and small matters
And that NJC stuff
We've dissected Joni
Her rants and her raves
And Taming The Tiger's
Poked, prodded and praised
From face-lifts to boo-hoos
And her new found synthetics
Is she really just crabby?
Or perhaps diabetic?
But love it or leave it
It's been quite a year
So here are the highlights
That we all hold so dear ...
She started out west
With Bob and with Van
Could she tour again?
She found out she still can!
And she finally wound up
At the farm owned by Max
So it's thirty years later
Chill out and relax!
Her shining appearance
With Herbie and Kyle
Have shown one and all
She's still got girly guile
Then she toured with Larry
With Chris and with Brian
And those who attended
Well they're all still flyin'
Despite interruptions
From fans there for Dylan
She fixed them with glares
And words that were chillin'
And some listers met her
In person no less
She was gracious and charming
And lovely I guess
That just about does it
For a big Joni year
So goodnight one and all
And to all -- great good cheer!

P.S. I also have a bootleg CD of Joni in concert right before the LP was
released & she calls it "Song To A Seagull". So I have verbal proof too.

Hey Tubie,
I can't help you in the Italian dance record department, but "Car
Wheels On A Gravel Road" by Lucinda Williams is strictly 1998 vintage.
If you heard it in the 70's, you must've had some kinda out of body
prophetic deja vu experience! The Williams disc, btw, IS the best
release of '98 ;~D

Hi Paul et al -
This seems to be the number one JMDL debate. Hopefully this will put it to
rest. In a follow-up blurb to his massive article on Joni in Goldmine
Magazine (http://www.jmdl.com/articles/gold1.htm), author William Ruhlman
writes:
"Two of the more careful readers of my article, "Joni Mitchell: From Blue
To Indigo" (issue 380), were Joni Mitchell and David Geffen. Both of them
have contacted me subsequently, and with their help I am able to clarify a
few points made in the article.
"The article contained a description of the confusion surrounding the title
of Mitchell's 1968 debut album. The album has a cover illustration, painted
by Mitchell, that features the words "Song To A Seagull" written out in
seagulls, while the spine and the record label (on LP, cassette and CD) all
say merely "Joni Mitchell." This has led some people to call the album Song
To A Seagull and some Joni Mitchell, while some published sources
mistakenly say there are two albums.
"I pointed out that Joni Mitchell is the "official" title. Mitchell,
however, wishes to note that Song To A Seagull was the title she intended
for the album, though somehow that intention got lost when the album was
being pressed, and the error has never been corrected."
There ya go!

Unfortunately, since it is a bootleg, we'll have to ask the jury to
totally disregard it, since it's not part of a legal pressing. And even
so ... it would still just be hearsay. ;-)

So rather than repeat the answer in detail, I wil suggest you search the JMDL

curiousity and after which you will never ask the question again.

Hello Folks,
Here's a small bit of news from KCRW, one of the very Joni-friendly radio
stations here in Los Angeles.
On this morning's show host Nick Harcort was joined by two music critics,
John Payne from the L.A. Weekly, Steve Hockman from the L.A. Times and
producer of Morning Becomes Eclectic, Ariana Morgenstern for a year end
round-up/gift-giving themed show.
The whole thing was quite fun with lots of repartee between the guests
and some interesting offerings from 3 different perspectives. One of
Ariana Morganstern's selections was "My Best To You" from Taming The
Tiger which she dedicated to her mother. She introduced it by saying
something like "Joni Mitchell always crafts very beautiful songs and this
album is no exception. My mother will be getting TTT with this track
underlined"
After the song was played the conversation continued with talk of last
May's Warner Bros. PPV concert. All the guests (except John Payne) plus
the host had attended the Saturday night taping and all singled out the
covers as being major surprises and delights. They also particularly
loved her cigarette breaks during the taping of those songs.
Happy Holidays,
Ken Corral-

I would contribute, but John, why did you start this thread right before
Christmas? :-( I am so swamped with work right now, I honestly can say I
have 10 minutes a day to spend on the computer. At any rate, great
thread-great posts from the two of you. You both covered Tom covering
Joni. I can't think of anything else too add. As for Joni does Tom: How
about including "Frank's Wild Years"-Joni loves to talk and tell a
tale. I like the idea of closing with a duet on "I Never Talk to
Strangers". Somewhere I'd add J&T duetting on "Picking Up After You".
Don't you just love the way at the end, Tom goes from 'picking up after
you' to 'With someone I'll pick up after you'? Actually from that
album, I could see Joni doing "I Beg Your Pardon".
btw, Bob, Great image for a cover picture! You'd have to make sure some
chest hair was sticking out of Tom's pink chiffon gown-" Goin' Out
West"- 'I got hair on my chest...I look good without a shirt'!

I noticed from the 12/05 issue of Billboard that James Taylor is receiving
their Century Aware, the one that Joni was awarded back in 1995, (they
picked George Harrison, Buddy Guy and Billy Joel over her first?!?!).
A quick glance through the article reveals NJC. Since it goes through his
musical career, for some reason I was sure there would be SOME
mention of JM, but alas....
If there are any James Taylor fans out there who hoard things and
would like my copy, please let me know and I'll send it out.

The seagulls are on the right side of the cover.
On the original vinyl edition of this album, the cover spine and the record
label say "Joni Mitchell," with no mention of STAS. I owned my (used) vinyl
copy of this album for many years before I noticed that the birds spell the
intended title, partly because most of the first "L" and all of the last "L"
in the word SEAGULL are cut off, as well as part of the "G" in SONG.
(Actually, the first "L" and the "G" wrap around the cover to the lyrics, as
it's a bi-fold cover.) Does anyone else's copy appear this way?
On my CD version of the album, the spine and the CD itself say "Song To A
Seagull" and "Joni Mitchell". And interestingly enough, the birds are not cut
off and they very obviously spell out Song To A Seagull. It looks as if the
cover art was altered a bit to display it in its entirety, as Joni probably
originally intended it to appear.

HAHAHAHAHAAHA! Both of you! Hysterical! : D
And the funniest thing (to me) is that while my ex probably wouldn't consent
to appear on Springer, the fact that she delighted in watching Ricki, Jenny,
Maury, and Jerry EVERY SINGLE DAY and well into the wee hours of the morning

Maybe one day it will be illegal to incite hatred against us the way it is to
people of different races. However, as the religions are the main culprits of
this, i don't see much chance of that happening. they fuel peoples fears and
bigotires and give them the backing to be as they are. after all to hate gays is
doing God's workk in some people's minds.
However, the one thing they cannot touch is our soul's and the righteousness on
our side. no matter what, they cannot take our humanity away. they can kill us,
make life very difficult, but they will not destroy us. we will always live.
