Subject: Best Albums of All Time (VLJC)
I'm sorry but, there is no way I could restrict it to just 5 albums so,
here's my top 10 albums of all time:
1. Brother's keeper - Neville Brothers. Songs from another culture that
touch the emotional strings. I know nothing of racial prejudice or a
Christian God but, the emotion is understood. The harmonies and the musical
talent of these brothers are evident on this album in particular.
2. Hejira - Joni Mitchell. How do you choose one album to sum up an
inspirational career? Hejira came into being in a period of transtition and
is the culmination of everything until then and a look at a future
unfolding. The lyrics are as strong as ever, weaving visual stories and
learning lessons. Musically, this album is based in the simple folk roots
yet, introduces us to the new vehicle to come - jazz. Refreshing,
comfortable and deep.
3. Filigree and Shadow - This Mortal Coil. A showcase of the British label,
4AD. The choice of songs is enough but, the variety of styles coming
together on this album was a landmark in music for me. There is nobody that
this album could not appeal to. From soaring violins to screaming guitars,
from grunge sounds to funky dance beats, this album has it all and more -
atmosphere.
4. Secrets of The Beehive - David Sylvian. This was the highlight of david
Sylvian's career. Lyrically, only Joni can surpass it. Just the right mix
of acoustic genius and technical imagination.
5. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac. The classic. This was a landmark album for a
lot of people and established Stevie Nicks as the lyrical goddess she is.
6. Dark Side of The Moon - Pink Floyd. The wizards of British rock. This is
their finest hour. Dark Side of The Moon has ambient moodiness and
political comment all wrapped up in a contiuous journey of music.
7. Wild Seed, Wild Flower - Dionne Farris. The unsung heroine of folk rock
of the '90s. The best thing Dionne Farris ever did was to leave Arrested
Development. She found a new voice of her own and discovered she can hold a
candle up to the best of them. When a person can make you unearth your
deepest fears and question established beliefs, devotion naturally follows
(ie Joni Mitchell).
8. Little Earthquakes - Tori Amos. The personal pain on this album deserves
the greatest respect and admiration. Tori Amos couldn't help being from the
time she is from and, whether or not she is heavily influenced by Joni
Mitchell (as has been suggested) her words are very personal and a new
perspective is gained.
9. Another Pond - Not Drowning, Waving. The quiet seers of Australian folk
rock. David Bridie's lyrics are worthy of gentle respect as much as any
woman with a guitar. Sensitive to the geological landscape and sensitive to
the human landscape, he and his collegues can weave emotional stories with
the best of them. Simple songs, simple stories, performed with love.
10.I Had a Green Heart... - Martha's Vineyard. The only album recorded by
the Perth based folk rock band. It is a treasure. Peggy van Zalm's lyrics
can still be heard on her solo albums but, this combination will never be
heard again. These guys knew just how to enhance these lyrics with moody
interactions and sounds. The song, Old Beach Road can set up feelings of
melancholoy, no matter where you are from and Shadow and Time Will Fly will
can spin you from despair to inspiration in minutes.
Thanks for the indulgence.

Paul - no flames from me! I agree with you. The challenge was to come
up with a top 5. I especially like the lists with 2/3 records tied for
each slot. I guess it's no big deal really, it's kinda like "Speed
Limit 65" - you know they don't intend to enforce the rule. Maybe when
Les goes to tally up the records he'll disqualify those who listed
more than 5...

Subject: It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas
Hello again, I promised to post when I had news about the arrival of my
quest to obtain a Joni lithograph. Well, it arrived at the neighbor's
house yesterday. The lady from Warner Bros called me at work to find out
if it had arrived (she had shipped it with a Saturday delivery). I walked
to my neighbor's after I parked in the driveway, looked at the package,
opened it, and actually laid a hand on it. It is quite lovely artwork.
Since I don't have the ability to draw a straight line even using a ruler,
I really am in awe of those who can. All that is left for me to do is to
decide upon something incredibly appropriate for Ms. Warner Brothers.
When I walked into the house last night I was wearing a sh?t eating grin.
After being quizzed by my wife, I finally told her that her extra special
present had arrived and I had laid a hand on it. She said that she would
have to go to the neighbor's house for coffee and snoop around. All
through dinner, she attempted to guess what it is. A tree (weeping willow,
rubber tree, bamboo, Joshua tree (after our son), a Wye Oak (the MD state
tree, 250-300 years old)), a plant, a food processor, a this, a that,
eventually she quessed a Joni lithograph, but just a quickly said that one
of those would be too expensive to purchase.
I always replied, "I can neither confirm nor deny" to all of her guesses.
I told her that if she really wanted the gift now, I would give it to her,
but she's gonna have to wait. We bought an 8 ft tree last night, got it
set up. Decorations are tonight. It's cold here in DC (after being 78
just one week ago!) down to the 20s last night. This Christmas season is
already looking good for the Carter household. I can't wait. Damm 40
years old, and giddy like a schoolboy. Some model for my 2 year old son,
huh?
Well, I guess I'll do some work now.
Thanks to all who helped me complete my quest. It feels so good when a
plan comes together.

Madame Dido! Laura was unique, and amongst her many other gifts was her
ability to create songs with virtually nothing in them, like this one. Even
more minimalist is "Been On A Train" from "Christmas and the Beads of Sweat",

If Tom Waits did an album of all Joni songs and Joni did an album of all

Aw, shucks (here I would fill in your name but I don't know what it is),
Just this morning I called the Vermont Teddy Bear Company and sent this
fine Warner Brothers lady a Mistletoe bear. Hopefully it will get to her
before Christmas. On the card I said (paraphrasing here): "Thank you for
finding such a wonderful gift for my wife, it will be a great Christmas
present, and thanks for helping to make this Christmas special. If you
ever return to the DC area (she'd mentioned that she'd just been here),
you have a standing dinner invite. Thanks, Loren....
And she's gonna be getting a card, picture, and a letter to her boss.
She's (Elane Geller @ Warner Bros) deserving of some accolades also.
My wife is truly deserving of all that I can do for her. She has given us
a beautiful little son (everyone says he's smart and hs excellent language
skills for his age (just turned 2 on Dec 1st)). I'll never be able to
repay her for Joshua, but I'm gonna keep trying!!
Don't give up on finding that special person. He'll/She'll (since I don't
know your name I won't make assumptions) turn in the strangest places at
the strangest times. I don't think that I'm that special. I feel lucky to
have her.

Magic, and the one that starts, "Lookin' back at when I/was a little nappy

Also: has anyone heard "The Source" by Osamu Kitajima. It's one of my
favorite instrumental albums of all time. Like a Japanese garden: every
note in its place.
"Alone But Never Alone" by Larry Carlton is a great acoustic guitar album.
Pristine, melodic guitar. It's very mellow and positive, like Pat Methany
in certain ways.
"Begin Sweet World" by Richard Stolzman is another great instrumental
album: very melodic.
"The Big Huge" and "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" by the Incredible
String Band. These are both great albums, highly creative, one of a kind.
The ISB's performances back then were legendary. Robin Williamson and
Mike Heron. Williamson has became a really fine Celtic
bard/storyteller/harpist. Still performs around in small venues.
Anybody ever listen to Tim Hardin???

While I agree that "Songs in the Key of Life" is an excellent album by Stevie,
I would rate "Innervisions," "Talking Book" and "Fulfillingness First Finale"
ahead of it. Now those three are an amazing trilogy by the Wonderman.

Colin, can you use an American NSTC tape? I'd be glad to dub you off a copy
and send it to you, but I fear it woudln't work in your VCR, unless you
know someone who has an NSTC setup, or at least a VCR to copy to PAL for
you.

I've been thinking about this for a couple of days and don't believe that
these artists will be as uncompromising as Joni has been when it comes to
her musical creations. Joni has always been an "artist" first; she has
rarely been swayed by producers, managers, record company execs, and others
who may have wanted her to alter her style for the sake of selling more
records or to be more popular with a particular demographic. And I'm not
accusing Sarah or Natalie of selling out, rather, taking into account more
than Joni ever would the desires of the industry people, and letting this
influence their artistic choices. I personally love Sarah's heavily-layered
and produced sound, but I believe she is much more acceding to recording
studio personnel than Joni is. Ani may be the exception--she does seem to
possess the "guts" to stand up and be true to herself (but should not do so
in the guise of a journalist :-)
Part of the problem in remaining true to your muse must be economic. It's
Catch 22 because the record companies won't usually continue to support a
musician who's sales are not up to a certain level. So the artist gets
caught trying to mine a particular style which may or may not be their
*real* idea of how they want to express themselves, musically, or
literally, through the media.
I'm just glad that Joni still shows no signs whatsoever of caving in to the
"alligators gnashing" at her and in fact is combative of the industry in
general, as evidenced by her latest release, Taming the Tiger, in which she
continues her flippant "kiss my ass" attitude, which was started, according
to someone on this list (hi Kakki!), as far back as For The Roses.

Hello Joni Lovers!
I just returned from another wonderful week on Lake Erie (Fredonia, NY) and
digested five JMDL's. My head is swimming but I would like to comment on
several things.
First, I loved the Top Five Poll! Now I have to go and spend hundreds of
dollars to buy dozens of records. Why? Because I trust the taste of anyone
who gets into Joni (my first purchase will be Ferron).
Last night I went to the local college bar, BJ's, and struck up a
conversation with the DJ, complimenting him on his taste in music. Out of
the blue he mentioned how much he loved Seal's duet with Joni. (I swear I
didn't mention that she is my favorite musician!) For the next hour we
talked Joni. His favorites are Amelia-Pat's Solo-Hejira from Shadows And
Light & Turbulent Indigo. He hasn't heard Taming The Tiger yet but when I
warned him that it was her mellowest work to date his eyes lit up. I think
I'm in love....
As for "Genuine junkfood for juveniles" -- to me this is the most powerful
lyric on TTT. Taken in context Joni is talking about her listening
experience "up and down the dial." She is obviously not referring to the
profound music of Bjork, McLachlan and Apple. Rather I think she is singing
about the Garbage pop radio plays to death. And I would add to that list:
Help Me...

If you have not yet contacted your Member of Congress or wish to do more, go
to http://www.moveon.org/actions.htm. Also, Moveon.org is holding a press
conference in D.C. on Wednesday. For more information, look up
http://www.moveon.org/release1216.htm
In the next 48 hours, several public demonstrations of impeachment
opposition are planned.
****** PRAYER VIGIL IN WASHINGTON D.C. ******
****** THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17th 10am - 2pm ******
****** WEST STEPS OF THE US CAPITOL ******
The main event will be a prayer vigil on the west steps of the Capitol on
Thurday from 10am to 2pm. This event will include "the Rev. Jesse Jackson,
Congressional Leaders, ministers of all faith, state and local elected
officials, and civil rights and non-profit organizations." Most groups I've
talked to have endorsed this event as the primary anti-impeachment event
before the House vote. MoveOn.org will be represented, and we encourage you
to attend if you can. More information can be found at
http://www.rainbowpush.org.
The good news is PEOPLE DO CARE. In the last week more than 200,000 phone
calls to Congress from constituents went to Congress on our 1-877-TO-MOVEON
line. The Capitol Switchboard has been constantly swamped. In the same
period, we've delivered over 500,000 emails to Congress. 25,000 new people
are signing the "Censure and Move On" petition every day. 40,000 individual
letters came into our "swingvotes@list.moveon.org" address, completely
swamping the House email servers. We've calculated that the House servers
simply cannot accept even half that load in the time remaining this week, so
we are discontinuing "swingvotes" email -- and sending any messages to
"swingvotes" directly to the Speaker of the House Bob Livingston. Sorry --
the House needs to buy more servers.
Perhaps we should go back to telegrams. No joke. People For the American
Way has set up a special Western Union Opinion-Gram toll-free number. It
is: 1-800-593-2790. They will send an anti-impeachment telegram to your
representative and bill you $6.50 on your phone bill.
**** SEND A TELEGRAM TO CONGRESS ****

Keep up the great work. Your voice is being heard.

Sounds like a lot of work Marian - Well done. Stuff like that sounds simple,
but even with word-processors and ready-made binders like we have today, it
can be a real headache collocating and collating a pile of written material
into an attractive package. I just KNOW you got a slight headache at one
point didn't you! Y'know, that "What the heck have I got myself into here, I
wish I'd never said I'd do it" feeling...
But I can tell from your words that you made it with love, so I bet it looks
fab.
I just can't believe you included my lame excuses for recipes in there! Heck
they weren't even English - My flatmate's girlfriend from Minneapolis taught
us how to do the french toast back in the eighties. I guess recipes, like
favours, go around the world till they come back to you.
