Damn, this is why these lists are so tough to make. 80's music is my
favorite, and although I didn't list most of these albums, they are
still so very important to me and close to my heart. Scritti Polliti's
"Cupid and Psyche 85" is amazing, especially "Wood Beez" and
"Absolute". Also, I made a big error in not including Peter Gabriel's
"So" in my runners up! Also, "Human's Lib" is still one I listen to
often, along with "Lexicon of Love". In fact, the majority of my cds
are 80's music. I also forgot to mention the Eurythmic's "Revenge" as
one of my faves, and I don't know how I forgot because I listen to it
constantly. Berlin's "Lovelife" album is still great, and Talk Talk's
greatest hits is constantly playing in my car. Also, the Plimsouls are
one band who has stood the test of time.
Jason and I have talked about how much we love the 80's before. Is
there anyone else out there who is still into the 80's as well? Maybe
it is because this music reminds me of my teen years, but 80's new wave
and funk is my favorite stuff to listen to.
Cheers,
Evian

Subject: Joni on my mind
This year 1998 is getting to the end and I delurch again to tell you,
friends of spirit, few pleasant things that happened to me and had a Joni's
content...
First of all, I converted my boss, who is now on friendly terms with me, to
Joni's music!
She asked me one day: Which JM music would you recommend? I know you are a
fan of her and maybe you could help me there...
I immediately gave her a copy of Hejira as a present!
Two weeks later she was ordering a copy of Taming the Tiger...
I know she hasn't joined the digest list yet but this is a beginning of
something new and unexpected... ;-)
Last week I was at a local Christmas fair with my family in search for
gifts and we casually stopped at one stand which was showing some nice and
cheap jewelry, the owners were listening to some good Italian music and I
lingered for a long while asking some informations about who was singing
this and that (I heard a beautiful Lara Fabian's song for the first time on
her tape)... till the lady, noticing my interest, popped out the tape, gave
it to me and said: "OK, since you are so keen on this music, you may borrow
it, duplicate it and bring it back sometime this week before we move to
another town..."
I was so pleased and said that I would make a tape for her with some
selection of my choice and give it to her as a present for her kindness...
That evening I said to my wife that I was tempted to put some a lot of JM
music on that but I restrained from that and managed to place only a couple
of her songs on it (taken from TTT). The morning after I gave her the tape
with included the list of songs... the first thing the lady said was: "Wow,
Joni Mitchell!"
That was totally unexpected too! I hope to meet this couple again, maybe
next year at the same fair...
Yesterday I went to a record shop to get some music, the latest disco
compilation for my daughter (we have many things in common!), some Ella
Fitzgerald's and the latest Patty Pravo's production (do you know her?),
the lady attendant was helping me locating some Ella's songs I liked to
purchase when a man asked her: "Where can I find some "John" Mitchell's
cd's? I don't know this artist, he's a man or what? I am looking for his
latest cd as a present for a friend..."
I immediately jumped up and explained to him who was Joni and which gender
she was!
The record shop didn't have the cd on stock yet (but at least they knew
very well who she was!), the guy needed the cd for the weekend so I offered
him my own copy of TTT (which I have received from CD Now... thanks to the
advance order I placed!) and have reordered another copy for myself which
my newly made friend will pay for me. In the meantime I keep on listening
to the copy I reversed on my precious MiniDisk...
It's amazing how Joni and music, generally speaking, can bring people together!
Well, that's all from my side of the world... have a warm and loving
Christmas Holiday and may the New Year fulfill all your wishes (or at least
some)!

Yes, I do have DED, and I love it, though it would rank behind NRH,
Hejira and TI in my list of joni faves. It would still be among my top
50 albums of all-time, however. I've just remembered that I omitted two
Don Henley albums from my list (damn!)....I always think of DED and
Building The Perfect Beast as kind of related (as Don Rowe pointed out a
while ago on the list). I also loved his End Of The Innocence album.
Oh, and I've just spotted an error in my original posting....the second
Peter Gabriel album I listed (in the just bubbling under section),
should've read "Us", not "So" (which I'd already included in my top 5!).

That's interesting. There seems to have been a number of different
For The Roses paintings that were not used for the album sleeve.
The For The Roses songbook cover had a horse painting which
included her "fishbowl" theme to express her distaste for the
"music biz".
Also the review copies of the record may have had a different
cover because Penny Valentine wrote in a review in Sounds :
"As the eye travels across - slap in the middle of this canvas is
a massive pile. As obtrusive as though the painter had hated
its peace and beauty, its calm and added her own morbid touch
.........A pile of refuse - of old motel signs, of lost souls, of broken
guitars, cracked dreams, faded love letters, blunt needles and
redundant talent. This is the canvas that Joni Mitchell has used
for her new album For the Roses."

That works well in some cases. In San Antonio there are at least three apt
buildings that are primarily gay-only. I lived in one of them for a time, and
it featured a locked front lobby (common in Europe but not in the States).
Except for the cars constantly parked in front that sport rainbow flags and
other gay bumperstickers, a person driving by wouldn't necessarily know that
it's a gay building.
Actually, several elderly str8 people lived there, too, as they were there
when the owner bought the then very run-down down building and he didn't
require them to leave -- he simply remodeled around them. I'm sure the older
residents were at first a bit shocked by some of the new tenants, but everyone
got along very well and were courteous and respectful of their neighbors. And
the older folks were happy that someone had come along and spiffed up their
building (even though they might not have been thrilled about the pastel Miami
Beach motif)!
Colin, is something like this feasible for you?

Well, sometimes it is better to let off steam :-) Better for your system
to get it out than keep it all bottled in. Joni is doing this through her
music. Wonder why we haven't seen it in her paintings (??).

Yes. We can find jerks everywhere but traditionally women have gotten
stepped on many a time. I don't see Joni as vulnerable. I think she is
just plain fed up. I don't like seeing her in her cantankerous state but
Joni is Joni. I accept her for the way she is. Healthwise, I would worry

I may be missing something, but I really don't view Joni as being particularly
cantankerous. She's been unhappy with the music industry and its ironies and
complications for a very long time; consider some of the lyrics of the song
"For The Roses":
In some office sits a poet
And he trembles when he sings
And he asks some guy
To circulate his soul around ...
I guess I seem ungrateful
With my teeth sunk in the hand
That brings me things
I really can't give up just yet
Now I sit up here
The critic!
And they introduce some band
But they seem so much confetti
Looking at them on my T.V. set
Oh the power and the glory
Just when you're getting a taste for worship
They start bringing out the hammers
And the boards
And the nails
To me, Joni has always been a bit bent out of shape about the music biz, and
she's very aware of her twisted relationship with it. She doesn't like
feeling that she is prostituting her poetry and music for fickle ingrates, but
she loves the rewards and the fame as much as almost any of us would.
As for her attitude being related to her health ... like Heather, my first
thoughts ran with Joni's post-polio syndrome. Sometimes Joni is on the road
and she just feels like crap -- more so than a performer of the same age who
does not have a similar condition. If she's crabby on stage one night, it may
be due to that. Now add to it the fact that -- although she is widely
regarded as one of the musical geniuses of our time -- she still does not
receive the recognition or respect that male performers of her generation
receive. Her albums don't get promotion. Then she's on stage working her ass
off and she gets dissed by little piss ants who are waiting for the almightly
Dylan or whoever. That would anger me, too ... and, in fact, it does.
Consider, too, that Joni is now 55 years old. At the age of 40, I find myself
becoming less tolerant of b.s. than I was when I was 20. It happens to us
all. We age and realize that our life is becoming shorter, and we just don't
want to put up with the shit anymore.

Hello everyone!
I have been hiding out, busy with life, kids, and the holiday season. I have
been racking my brain trying to come up with my top 5 all time albums, but, it
changes as soon as I sit down to type. I just don't think I can do this!
Anyway, I went to a wonderful concert last night- Martin Simpson, an
incredible guitarist, who has played in the Albion Band, as well as with
members of Fairport Convention, and Steeleye Span. I have rarely seen a
guitarist with such amazing talent. It was a real treat!
The evening was made even more full by his mentioning Joni several times
throughout his sets. The first was talking about recently meeting up with his
friend, June Tabor, while she was in town for a gig. She asked him to come
down and play a few songs with her for old times sake. He commented that her
range had gone from about "here" (playing a chord on the higher register) to
"here" (playing a much lower chord.) He said , "She was doing a Joni
Mitchell".
He also was talking about a wonderful musician who got out of the recording
end shortly after he started because of the "music biz". "Sort of like an
early Joni Mitchell- I'm outa here!"
Finally he ended his entire evening with an absolutely gorgeous rendition of
"A Case of You". An interesting note: He changed the words "I'm frightened by
the devil, and I'm drawn to those ones who ain't afraid" to : "I'm frightened
by the devil, and I'm scared to death of saints".
All in all, an enjoyable evening, and it made me think of all of you.
Hugs,
Ashara

It is called Gone From Danger and it is great. Very contemporary. Not
the singing Madonna of years gone by. Her live shows are superb. You
won't regret going to one of her shows. Though the P,P,&M and Judy shows
have gone a little stale as of late, both Joan and Joni (and Bob) have

Until I recently heard some early joni (pre-'72), I didn't realize just
how "influenced" Jewel's style has been by our SIQUOMB. I just heard the
first Jewel CD in a store a year or two ago, and thought - "hey! I like
the sound of that..." - and bought Pieces Of You then and there. So, in
my case, there was no media factor involved (other than in-store
exposure, I suppose, but it was an independently owned shop). I also
have CDs by all the other female artists Michael mentions, and really
couldn't care less how "genuine" they may or may not be. If their work
strikes me as good, then I'll buy it, and enjoy it. If I feel their
qulaity control, or muse, is beginning to wander, then I'll just pass on
the new stuff and play the old ones. If I listen to Jewel's new CD, and
don't think I like it enough to buy it, then that's no big deal. I'm not
gonna start writing to her or her management telling them she's sold
out/lost it etc...NOT that I'm suggesting any of you would ever do that
kind of thing to ANY artist :-)
That's how I am with all music. If Joni ever makes an album that doesn't
appeal to me, that doesn't render it worthless to everyone. TTT took a
while to grow on me (I think the track-order is partly responsible for
that...anyone else have any thoughts on TTT's running-order?), but now I
love it as much as most joni CDs in my collection.
Jason.

i could listen to the Offspring's "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)" all day and
still be laughing. i could also listen to Sarah's "Elsewhere", Garbage
"Temptaion Waits", and Kate Bush "Wuthering Heights", and Elliott Smith's
entire "XO" album.

From: "P. Henry"
hello and holiday greetings to all,
I'm Pat (aka: P. Henry) originally from the Detroit area and I'm brand new
to this list. I posted once to the cafe 2 years ago before this mailing
list existed, ( but have not been back to the site for some time) starting
off: "the last time I saw Joni was Detroit in '68..." as, indeed it was...
I was friends with, employer of, co performer with, jam session buddy of,
sound/light man as well as sometime bodyguard for (as well, of course, as
HUGE fan and admirer of) and even loaned my D28 to Joni at times in '66-'68
in the Port Huron/Detroit area.
I just want to say hi to all of you and say how great I think this site
is... Wally, thank you!

Am I alone in thinking a) most of the information on this discussion
group is boring and b) there is too much NJC content?
After just a week on the list I am uns.ubscribing so that I can free up
my server for things of interest and inteligence. Maybe if Ms Mitchell
was actually a contributer to this group if would actually be worth
tuning in to.
While nothing will stop me listening to Mitchell's music, in just
about every story I have read on her in the last two months (and there
have been several) she has managed to appear fairly graceless ("there
is no grace in my heart"). Talk about whine! She probably could have
sold a lot more copies of TTT (another flawed masterpiece undermined
by some wimpy arrangements and lazy lyrics) if she had just held her
tongue and not given in to the baiting by journalists. Not answering a
question is not being untrue to yourself (especially if you regret the
answer afterwards as Mitchell often seems to).
Just a few thoughts from the antipodes!

Welcome back to the list, P.H. I'm in Detroit...still. Were you at The Raven
with Joni? I'd love to hear some stories!

I'm confused. Why is that sexist? I don't get it. To me, it is a reminder
that women have strength of thought and feelings too. I like that line a
lot.

Hi
I never read the words until today but I was singing;
"I watched the stars chop down their spheres"
and Joni was singing
"I watched the stars chuck down their spears"
I thought she was ,like, looking at the stars as they moved in their
sphere of orbit as a sort of measure of time.Sorry Joni but I like my
line better :)
Something else: Has anyone noticed the difference between the
different quality of afternoon light as opposed to morning light. If
you imagine (or even actually do it) the sun at the same elevation
from the horizon at morning and then at afternoon, technically it
should be the same. What is it that changes?
