Marian Vienna ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Dec 1998 01:40:59 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Need Nov. 28th issue of Billboard magazine (SJC) Marian, When I saw your title I thought perhaps you wanted to check your recent charting in Austria ;-) Your performance sounded incredible and your set list just blew me away!! I hope this becomes a semi-regular gig for you. I'll check my local little store tomorrow to see if they have a back issue of the Billboard. Yesterday I was thinking about one of my own first "public performances" a million years ago and had a long forgotten and obscure Joni rememberance. Back in 1974 I had a friend who managed a hole-in-the-wall club in a very (literally) low-rent part of town. It was definitely no-frills but had no cover, the drinks were cheap and anyone (like me) could get up and fill in during the house band's breaks. It was a great place to try out your stuff among friends. (I think the regular customer base consisted entirely of friends and friends-of-friends anyway). The house band was comprised of 3 brothers and a sister who sang the lead vocals. They played mostly Chicano rock and some of their own original material. But the one song they played every single night as either the opener or the closing song was Joni's "Free Man in Paris." It was unusual to me even at that time and such a departure from their regular style. They performed it rollickingly full out from every pore, every time, like it was the greatest song they ever heard. They obviously had some great affection for Joni or the song yet never did any other Joni songs but this one. I was too shy at the time to ask them about it. The club is long gone but the building is still there and now houses a dry cleaners! Hoping to hear more about your appearances in the future! Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Dec 1998 06:00:09 EST From: BCConj@aol.com Subject: Anti-Hate Crimes Legislation in the U.S. The "Stop The Hate" Petition *On October 6, outside Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old University of Wyoming student, was tortured, beaten, and left tied to a pole in the freezing cold. Six days later, he died of his wounds in Poudre Valley Hospital, Fort Collins, Colorado. Matthew was murdered because he was gay and because he was a prominent and charismatic member of the gay and lesbian student group on campus. Right now Wyoming and Colorado have no anti-hate crime laws; the state legislature in Wyoming has voted down anti-bias bills for each of the past three years. There is an effort in Wyoming and Colorado to enact Matthew Shepard Laws, which would strongly punish the perpetrators of hate crimes. This petition demands the broadening of federal anti-hate crime law. Opening Statement: "As a religious voice, we state strongly that violence on the basis of sexual orientation, race or gender is wrong, is evil, is reprehensible." John Buehren, President of The Unitarian Universalist Association, speaks for Unitarian Universalists but his words are reflected in the hearts of people everywhere who believe we must speak out, take action against, and condemn hate crimes in all their ugly forms. A resolution follows: WHEREAS: We affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person; and WHEREAS: We commend the efforts of those individuals who dedicate their lives to causes of social justice and human rights; and WHEREAS: We support actions that protect the individual's rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, That we hereby urge the passage of The Hate Crimes Prevention Act (HCPA), H.R.3081 and S.1529 (The Hate Crimes Prevention Act (HCPA), H.R.3081 and S.1529, would amend current federal law (which permits federal prosecution of a hate crime only if the crime was motivated by bias based on religion, national origin, or color ) to include real or perceived sexual orientation, gender, and disability so the FBI would be able to investigate and prosecute violent hate crimes against gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. Under this bill, hate crimes that cause death or bodily injury because of prejudice can be investigated federally, regardless of whether the victim was exercising a federally protected right. The only way that our representatives can be aware of the base of support for this change to the current law is by making our voices heard. Please add your name to this petition and forward it to friends who believe in what it stands for. The petition will then be forwarded to the President of The United States; the Vice President of the United States; and our United States Senators and House Members. Petition Management: 1. This petition is being passed around the Internet. Please add your name to it so that we can have tougher laws against all hate crimes. Please keep the petition rolling. Do not reply to me. It's not always the music that falls short, it's the level of receptivity within the person listening to it. Music can't make you sensitive to it. That's work you have to do for yourself. Ellen, This was a wonderful post, and one that I want to respond to a couple of times to hit on some of the things you discuss. This statement you make reminds me of when I heard Hejira for the first time - I was 18 and didn't comprehend much of it, that is to say that I wasn't ready for it (unlike some of more "receptive" teenagers on this list; I'm envious of them for that), but I was astute enough to know that there was SOMETHING important about the record, and of course, I always enjoyed the "sound" of the record. I continued to listen to it and as my life experiences grew, so did my understanding of the record. The cool thing is that I know there are so many more revelations waiting for me on this disc as well as all of her work! Hejira reminds me of what Disney was attempting to do with Fantasia - he stated at the beginning of the film that he was creating a new art form - the combination of Classical music & animation. Audiences didn't now what to make of the film and it tanked. Likewise, IMO anyway, Joni created a new art form with Hejira - a combination of poetry & music that's more aural landscape than anything that had come before (it sure ain't rock n' roll, pop, jazz, whatever). Hejira was critically well-received but no one could pigeonhole it so it met the same fate as Fantasia. I'm just glad I'm one of the lucky ones making the effort to understand it. I found this article on another list I'm on: Mark NP-Traveling With Joni (My new mix tape!), DJRD Chattanooga Free Press November 22, 1998, Sunday A BellSouth official says persistent rumors about a telephone scam in which people are fraudulently using consumers' long-distance service aren't true. "This has taken on a persona of an urban legend," said Karen Williams, a BellSouth manager, noting that the purported scam has spread around the Internet and on e-mail. According to the supposed scam, someone identifying themselves as a telephone company technician calls an unsuspecting individual and asks that person to dial "9-0-#" and then hang up to complete a test. The rumor contends that by pushing "9-0-#" customers provide access to their telephone lines and allow long-distance calls to be made. Ms. Williams said that kind of access isn't possible. "There is no magic code, 9-0-# or otherwise, that enables anyone to have access to your residential or small business telephone service," she said. Many larger business customers use the "9" digit to obtain an outside line, and then by dialing "0", could give an outside caller access to the operator, said Ms. Williams. But, she said: "We have no evidence to suggest this is much of a problem with these larger businesses." Most businesses have communication managers or vendors who know when lines are being serviced and who give adequate notice to employees when technicians are working on the system. ___________________________________ | Mark Domyancich | | Harpua@revealed.net | | http://home.revealed.net/Harpua | | http://www.jmdl.com/guitar/mark | |_________________________________| ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Dec 1998 18:04:58 -0500 From: "Marsha" Subject: Re: Hitchers 'n prisoners (NJC) Ooooh, I just made the Joni-connection.... after I pled with Lori: >Don't be picking up any escaped death row >inmates down Texas way... Anyone who is really into Joni's last twenty years should listen to everything they can by the 1965-1968 version of the Miles Davis Quintet, which was Miles, Herbie, Wayne, Ron, and Tony Williams on drums. All four sidemen (and they were hardly sidemen, more than any other working group in jazz these guys pointed the way for their leader as much as the otehr way) first became famous during these years. Also, Joni frequently speaks of "Nefertiti" and "Miles Smiles" as among her favorite albums. Despite what I just said about the sidemen's role--- I have several albums made on Blue Note label during these years led by Herbie or Wayne, usually with Ron and Tony on them, often with each other on them, and Freddie Hubbard filling in on trumpet--- and I dont' find any of them nearly as interesting as the stuff they did with Miles. It's not even because of the trumpet playing... it's the oddest thing, the other four actually sounded better when they were playing with Miles... which sorta makes sense, cuz there was no better time to play their best... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Dec 1998 20:07:43 -0800 (PST) From: Bernadette Gallagher Subject: Beware of Hitchers? As some of you know I live in downtown L.A. and I went across the street this afternoon to mail off packages at the post office. There is an outside amphitheater there where we have regular concerts. I'm walking along when I hear two people singing "Our House". I laugh to myself thinking "here's another Joni moment". Then I look over and it's Graham Nash himself singing with a woman with long blond hair! It was obviously some kind of rehearsal. I had to go down an escalator to get down to the stage level and by the time I got there he was leaving through a private elevator. I flagged down two stage hands and they were really nice and told me all about a free Christmas concert taking place tonight. They showed me the schedule which included Graham, Bill Medley, Al Jarreau and Billy Dee Williams. They said that was Graham's daughter singing with him (she has a big beautiful voice a bit like Judy Collins). I went on to do some errands and walked over to Grand Central Market. Coming straight at me down the aisle was Graham, his wife and daughter. Trying to be more poised these days, I said "Hi Graham!" like I've known him all my life. He answered back "Hey!" like he'd known me all his life! I told him how happy I was to see him appearing, blah, blah, and then I closed with "I'm a really big fan of Joni Mitchell." Without missing one nanosecond of a beat, he answered back very heartily "Well, I'm a really big fan of Joni Mitchell, too!" He is exactly the same warm and sincere man in person that he is on TV and stage. If any of the local listers are interested in this free concert tonight and want to brave the traffic, it is at the California Plaza Watercourt Amphitheater located at Third and Grand Ave. starting at 5:30 p.m. According to the schedule I saw, Graham goes on at 6:40 p.m. I will be there, of course. It captures the hues of Paris -- the late night stroll, the musicality it brings to those who are in despair, the endless yearning for perfection and unfulfilment... Dexter Gordon, a consummate bebop gymnast was nominated for his performance which, like you said.. is no great stretch for him.. > The film features a lot of great music, supplied by Herbie Hancock > (more synchronicity), Ron Carter, Freddie Hubbard, and Joni's own > Wayne Shorter. Lonette McKee (Jungle Fever) eclipsed recent memory of the Gershwin staple "How Long Has This Been Going On?". The jazz score added to a different dimension. The solo wail of a saxophone in one introspective scene was so effective that it vividly captured the life of musicians struggling to create sublime music for everyone yet not feeling fulfilled. The despair, the heartbreak... I like the score for the film and it won in the Oscars in that category... although IMHO, the Ennio Morricone score in THE MISSION deserved the award more... Some of the Graham Nash/Joni Mitchell stories have been well documented (and who can forget that picture of them sitting close together with him whispering in her ear as she has a very troubled look on her face). Every time Nash has mentioned Joni in print or on video it's apparent that he *is* a big fan. The man knows how to spot talent, having collaborated with some of the biggest names in contemporary music. How wonderful that he would confirm his admiration for Joni to you, and also be friendly and approachable at the same time. Have a great time at the concert, but be careful about smuggling in your camera (remember what happened with Dylan) :-D Scott ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Dec 1998 22:00:49 EST From: RickieLee1@aol.com Subject: Re: Encounter with Graham Nash! kakki! what a cool story! you got the karma girl! and the chutzpah to go with it to make it work! much love, ric ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Dec 1998 19:55:37 -0800 From: Susan Chaloner Subject: Re: Encounter with Graham Nash! Somebody told me about a website called: ebay.com which is an auction site from the East Bay in San Francisco. I logged on tonight and saw 42 Joni Mitchell items for sale (follow the prompts like on yahoo.com, choose the category and follow music to pop/rock) There were CD's for $1.50, videos, record albums and books...I thought somebody out there in Joni land with a few extra bucks might want to have a look...for what it's worth y'all. I saw a Shadows and Light Video for sale, a radio show with her and James Taylor among other things... Hippo Hollydays! Kim in sunny Virginia Beach. (I marvel at this place. The concert was wonderful. The word must have gotten out because the whole area was completely packed with people and children. I learned it was a benefit for the Childrens Cancer Research Fund (CCRF). This is the charity that Graham played for on Rock and Roll Jeopardy a few months back. They were also several performances by children from Brentwood school choral groups, ballet, and members of the Thelonius Monk Institute of Jazz. Graham and his daughter Nia performed "Our House" with Graham on piano and then performed "Silent Night" and "Teach Your Children" with Graham on guitar and harmonica. I noticed earlier today that Graham's and his daughter's voices seemed to be a little divergent, causing both to go off-key occasionally. Graham apparently worked it out tonight by toning down his daughter's voice to a lower harmony. It turned out well and reminded me a bit of the harmonies Graham does with Crosby. Their "Silent Night" was definitely in the Crosby-Nash style and really nice. Al Jarreau was fantastic, performing "The Christmas Song" and "My Favorite Things" among others in his very distinctive style. Everyone watching was really put into the holiday spirit. Everywhere I looked the downtown lawyers and bankers smiled at strangers and seemed very caught up in it all. Afterward I went over to the adjacent Intercontinental Hotel lounge to hear some live jazz and have a martini. I'd heard that I could have attended a VIP cocktail party there earlier for a $500 donation (ha!). I did not see Graham again but did see Magic Johnson (who lit the 50 foot Christmas tree) and Billy Dee Williams and said hello to them. Going to try to make the Shana Morrison late show tonight at the Opium Den in Hollywood, too, if I can catch up with my real life stuff here!
