Hello,
I am so sorry this is late but I only just caught up on my digests... in
regards to the Rush inquiry (I can't remember who the lady was!), my
husband is a big fan and he said that their mailing list is:
National Midnight Star
Another list that could help your son in regards to other like minded
people who like prog music is the Dream Theater List at:
www.dreamtheater.com
also again try the King Crimson list which is an excellent and very
stimulating list and their list is known as:
Elephant Digest
Sorry this is so late and not as comprehensive as I would've liked...
hope your son finds what he needs.

Vicki - welcome to JMDL-land! Looks like you need to get TTT for

The funniest thing about these complaints to me has been the repeated

Hey, I found this and thought it was quite amusing about blues singing.
Happy reading!!!
P.S.- SRV sang the blues!
HOW TO SING THE BLUES
1. Most blues begin "woke up this morning."
2. "I got a good woman" is a bad way to begin the blues,
unless you stick something nasty in the next line.
I got a good woman-
with the meanest dog in town.
3. Blues are simple. After you have the first line right,
repeat it. Then find something that rhymes. Sort of.
Got a good woman
with the meanest dog in town.
He got teeth like Margaret Thatcher
and he weighs about 500 pounds.
4. The blues are not about limitless choice.
Blues cars are Chevies and Cadillacs. Other acceptable
blues transportation is a Greyhound bus or a southbound
train. Walkin' plays a major part in the blues lifestyle.
So does fixin' to die.
6. Teenagers can't sing the blues. Adults sing the blues.
Blues adulthood means old enough to get the electric chair
if you shoot a man in Memphis.
7. You can have the blues in New York City, but not in
Brooklyn or Queens. Hard times in Vermont or North Dakota
are just a depression. Chicago, St. Louis and Kansas City
are still the best places to have the blues.
8. The following colors do not belong in the blues:
a. violet
b. beige
c. mauve
9. You can't have the blues in an office or a shopping mall, the
lighting is wrong.
10. Good places for the Blues:
a. the highway
b. the jailhouse
c. the empty bed
Bad places:
a. Ashrams
b. Gallery openings
c. weekend in the Hamptons
11. No one will believe it's the blues if you wear a suit,
unless you happen to be an old black man.
12. Do you have the right to sing the blues?
Yes, if:
a. your first name is a southern state, like Georgia
b. you're blind
c. you shot a man in Memphis.
d. you can't be satisfied.
No, if:
a. you were once blind but now can see.
b. you're deaf
c. you have a trust fund.
13. Neither Julio Iglesias nor Barbara Streisand can sing
the blues.
14. If you ask for water and your baby gives you gasoline,
it's the blues. Other blues beverages are:
a. wine
b. Irish whiskey
c. Muddy water
Blues beverages are NOT:
a. Any mixed drink
b. Any wine kosher for Passover
c. Yoo Hoo (all flavors)
15. If it occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it's
a blues death. Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is a
blues way to die. So is the electric chair, substance abuse
or being denied treatment in an emergency room. It is not a
blues death, if you die during a liposuction treatment.
16. Some Blues names for Women
a. Sadie
b. Big Mama
c. Bessie
17. Some Blues Names for Men
a. Joe
b. Willie
c. Little Willie
d. Lightning
Persons with names like Sierra or Sequoia will not be
permitted to sing the blues no matter how many men they
shoot in Memphis.
17B. Other Blues Names (Starter Kit)
a. Name of Physical infirmity (Blind, Cripple, Asthmatic)
b. First name (see above) or name of fruit (Lemon, Lime, Kiwi)
c. Last Name of President (Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc.)

Subject: Movie Review "'Round Midnight" (NJC)
Since Julie's movie reviews are on hiatus, I'll chime in here with one
about a video I watched over the last couple of days. 'Round Midnight
is an older film, don't recall the year, but it's the story of a jazz
musician named Dale Turner, played to perfection by Dexter Gordon (no
great stretch for him to play a master saxophonist, but he handles the
non-music scenes with warmth as well).
The film features a lot of great music, supplied by Herbie Hancock
(more synchronicity), Ron Carter, Freddie Hubbard, and Joni's own
Wayne Shorter. The plot was interesting to me as it dealt with Dale's
redemption from addiction due to the involvement of a true fan of his
music. Truly an uplifting movie, for those of you who may not like
"foreign" films, it has some subtitles as the bulk of the film takes
place in France, but for me that just adds to the charm.
Like I said, not a new film, but if it's one that got by you, check it
out...

Subject: Marian Unplugged - report
My show went pretty well. I felt good about how I sounded in spite of a
cold/cough I am getting over. It's also really different to try to sing in
a very dry and smoky environment as opposed to practicing in the clean air
at home. I had to drink a lot of water between songs and it wasn't always
especially helpful.
I really appreciate all the good wishes I received from so many of you here
on the list before my show. I'm sure it was very helpful on a cosmic level!
I felt really comfortable on the stage and I was able to really focus on the
music - to put my heart into all of the songs. There were some songs that I
played better than I have ever played them before - especially This Flight
Tonight and The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey - so that was exciting for me. I
was surprised that people liked TWTLIL because it is such a strange song,
but they really liked it.
I really enjoyed performing - but I'm kind of an emotional basket case today
- - I spent a lot of time preparing for the show and now it's over. I wish
that more of the people who said they would be there but didn't make it for
whatever reasons would have been there and also that everyone who did come
could have stayed for the whole show, but a lot of people had to leave
because of long journeys home and having to get up early the next day for
work. My best friend had to leave because she had promised to help her
daughter with a school project. I found out later from the Austrian Joni
fans that my show had been advertised as starting at 9 p.m. instead of 8
p.m. and so maybe more people would have come if it had been earlier. In
the end, only my husband and some Austrian Joni fans were left, but everyone
who was there was very complimentary (people have called and emailed me
today) and a few friends were really astonished that I could do this, since
it's not something I've shared with anyone here. The Austrian Joni fans
were especially complimentary and enthusiastic in their applause which I
appreciated very much, because their applause was coming from a knowledge
and love of Joni's music.
I will probably do it again. I think I will organize the music a little
differently, though. I think it's too ambitious, too long of a program, to
try to do one song from every Joni album, especially since some albums have
two or more songs that I really enjoy singing and don't want to leave out of
the program. Because so many people left, I ended up cutting back my
program very much - only sang 18 songs instead of the 32 or so that I had
prepared. I sang for about 1hr 45min.
My set list was:
Just Like This Train
Sisotowbell Lane
Coyote
Marcie
Electricity
This Flight Tonight
Eastern Rain
Sweet Bird
Cold Blue Steel
Sex Kills
Moon At the Window
Barangrill
Night in the City
Both Sides Now

First off, howdy. This is my first day here on this list, so let me
apologize if I should step on any toes, or cover any topics that have been
recently discussed at length.
My wife and I recently had the pleasure of seeing Joni and Bob Dylan in
concert at the University of Maryland the first week of November. The
concert was great, and lasted well into the night (opening act at 7pm, Bob
finally left the stage around 1145 (on a school night no less!). We had
floor seats, and the whole event was excellent.
My wife has been/is a Joni Mitchell fan for years and years. She last saw
Joni in New Orleans at a Jazz-fest, 10+ years ago. Well, Joni hadn't been
to the DC area in 17 years, so I had to get her/us tickets. We got there
early, my wife (Lucy) almost ran from the parking lot to the arena she was
so excited. Once inside we visited the souvenier (sp?)stand. We got a
concert poster and a "Happiness is the best face lift" tee shirt. They
also were selling Taming the Tiger lithographs (signed and unsigned). We
decided not to get one since it would have been difficult to keep it
pristine during the concert. With 20-20 hindsight I should have gotten her
one anyway.
But, with a major gift giving holiday rapidly approaching, I would like to
get her one as a present. I think she would really love it. So I ask the
assembled fans here if anyone has any ideas or places or thoughts or people
or phone numbers that I could use to track one of these lithographs down.
I've put in calls and e-mails to Reprise Records, Wally, the keeper of
JONIMITCHELL.COM, and a cataloge sales company named Vroom.
I was thinking that if she were to be in concert somewhere soon, I could
call the arena where she will be performing, and maybe get a hold of her
folks there, but I sit here running out of ideas.
Any and all leads will be greatly, humbly, and sincerely appreciated.
Loren......
P.S....Mary....sorry to pester you twice, and thanks for showing me the
way...lc

Hi Mary
I had a magazine article from around 1983 that I carried around
and eventually lost, that addressed that very lake. It was an
article about Joni Mitchell's photography, (I can't remember the
magazine, it was a music magazine of some kind) and included a double
of exposure of Jackson Browne asleep in a bus seat, mixed with I
think a scene of the prairie. It's been so long, I can't remember,
but they talked about those two lakes outside Madison and how
she took pictures there of skating...for some reason I thought it
referred to Don Juan' Reckless Daughter -- it mentioned how she
did the makeup for the black guy she impersonated, inspired by
a man who walked by her on the sidewalk one day who said something
like, "You sho' do look good, sugar", or something like that.
The article featured several of her photos, some of which were
from when she and Jackson Browne toured together in the early
70's...
It's been so long, but I traveled through Madison a few times in
the 70's and so I thought it ironic that Joni had been there of all
places...
Sorry my facts are so oblique...I am fishing them from the confines
of tired brain cells, lost in the murkiness of the ensuing holiday
season...ho ho ho.
Hope it helps.
Love

I think we should be given adequate notice for these fine
performance venues, so we can muster some bargain
airfares and travel to see you all.
We would be there with recorders, cameras, Kleenex,
and our finest voices/applause!

,if anyone has any ideas or places or thoughts or people or phone numbers
that I could use to track one of these lithographs down. I've put in calls
and e-mails to Reprise Records, Wally, the keeper of JONIMITCHELL.COM, and a
cataloge sales company named Vroom.
Hey Loren & Welcome! There's also a catalog co. that sells autographed
memorabilia called "Command Performance". Don't know if they have a website
or not, but maybe it's worth a shot...
I was thinking that if she were to be in concert somewhere soon, I could
call the arena where she will be performing, and maybe get a hold of her
folks there, but I sit here running out of ideas.
She's done performing for a while - sorry!

Mish-mash of impressions
For Paul and others,
"I don't like to lie but I sure can get phony when I get scared...stormy,
stormy when I get scared." Brilliant lyrics. To me WTRF was her first album
with obviously middle aged sentiments. I wasn't middle aged but I dug it.
I've had this mature part of me trapped inside wanting to get out for many
years now. Joni just pointed it out.
I think Joni was really saying "I'm so square but I don't care!" on WTRF.
Nod, wink. Growing up and liking it. Differentiating herself from youth
fixated pop. Not attempting to bridge the generation gap, but defeating it
by being herself. I view her later work starting with NRH as the creation of
the sacred space she was looking for.
* * * * * * * * * *
It's my nature not to criticize artists. I truly believe in art's right to
exist and an artist's right to process in their own personal progression. I
don't dis them. Joni makes this easy because she is so obviously on an inner
quest for music and soul. I imagine myself putting my arms around artists
when they are having hard times or the muse isn't flowing. I don't fault
them for not "putting out." To me that denies the gift that music is.
Capturing spirit for the ears. Helping others to feel what you feel. I find
it fitting that Joni said it best herself, (re: a post I didn't save.) that
you have to be in the right space to enjoy music sometimes. You have to be
ready for it. It's not always the music that falls short, it's the level of
receptivity within the person listening to it. Music can't make you
sensitive to it. That's work you have to do for yourself.
Joni has touched upon a suppleness of spirit that children have in her
lyrics. ("Love" WTRF) I believe adults have this same capacity by continuing
or reconnecting to the spontaneity of emotions.
Laid back and getting it,
Ellen
P.S. I was born in 1966. But the sixties weren't lost on me nor are they
dead in me. I'm holding on, on the inside. I'm going back to the garden.
It's just a little harder than we all imagined.

NEWS UPDATE!!!!!!
John,
The scanned images would be most appreciated. I'll put them on the home PC
for Lucy to see as she types.
NOW THE BIG STORY......Dateline Warner Brothers Customer service person
(via Reprise Records I assume).....just called and said she listened to my
voice mail plea and is gonna scare one of the lithographs up for FREE!!!!!
I told her that I was more than willing to pay the cost, and that if the
TTT lithograph was unavailable, any of Joni's prints would be great. She
said to give her until the start of next week, and she'll know for sure.
But she's gonna make it happen. Someone slap me, I wanna believe, I do, I
do, I do so wanna believe.
Lucy will be so surprised. Please let my pull this off. I'll let everyone
know when I know. If it happens, some lady in California is going to be
getting a little something from someone in Maryland for her Christmas
stocking.

You're both warm but....the song was written by Chet Powers who went on to
be known as Dino Valente in the group Quicksilver Messenger Service. Jesse
Colin Young and the Youngbloods recorded the most well-known version of the
song but I believe that Jefferson Airplane were the first to record it on
their first album "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off". The Airplane and the
members of Quicksilver were all good friends back in the early days of the
San Francisco scene.

No cigar on this one for anybody...Although "Get Together" was the Youngbloods'
biggest hit, and Jesse Colin Young sang it, it was written by Dino Valenti
(later of Quicksilver Messenger Service) under the pen name of (something)
Powers...can't remember the first name and don't have the album. There is a
bootleg disc somewhere of Joni doing this song. Randy Remote,

Hello All,
Thanks so much for the kind words, but I need no praise for my
efforts. I am no hero (Thanks Terry) I am a humble servant and this is
my calling to help people less fortunate then myself. I have worked with
poor and sick children for many years and this is just an extension to
that work. Thanks very much to Ashara for her very kind and generous
support. I finally caught up with all the digests and am current with
the latest. (by the way right-right).
I have been playing Love Puts On A New Face pretty regularly now on
guitar and I am thinking about doing it live for one of the benefits
coming up (along with some other Joni chestnuts I have been working on).
Best wishes to all during this holiday season of Thanksgiving, Hanukkah,
Christmas.

It's not on a bootleg - it's on Tape Tree #5, the PBS-TV show from LA on
11/30/69, on side 2.
