As many of you may know, my 21 year old daughter is named Marcy, and yes, it was because of Joni's song. On the album it is written as Marcie. I changed it to a "y" because I preferred the way it looked, especially with my last name. I recently spent some time with Leslie Mixon who brought an incredible copy of a book she has from 1970 (I think) and 1 of 100 copies that Joni gave as gifts for Christmas back then. In it she has many pages of handwritten lyrics, poems and artwork (Wow!) I was so excited and surprised to see Marcy written with a "y". Now I feel I didn't change it, that I was tuned into the way Joni originally had it. The same is true with the song Carey. Joni has it written as Cary. I wonder why the record company or Joni decided to change them. I just spent the last two weeks alone in a cottage on Lake Erie equipped with a 1960 Scott tube stereo amp & JBL speakers. I brought along my Rotel CD player & hundreds of discs, but Taming The Tiger resounded so deeply through this setting & sound system that it's practically all I listened to from the night I arrived. Transisters still can't seem to convey the warmth of tubes (& I'm not one of those technophobes who believe that LPs sound better than CDs)... As a life-long Joni lover who considers Hejira among her finest I must say that TTT is a work of equal beauty and even greater artistry. Joni's guitar playing & singing have reached a new zenith -- "as constant as the Northern Star." Viewing a copy of her Pay-Per-View Special several times I am awestruck by Joni's evolving sound. Big Yellow Taxi & Song For Sharon have never sounded more magnificent! & oh my my Comes Love is HOT HOT HOT!!! I've read complaints about Joni's new guitar sound, lyrics & paintings on the JMDL during the past months scratching my head wondering how fans could be so narrow-minded. The bell-like clarity of the VG-8 is resoundingly fresh, complementing her silky voice like oak on a bonfire! The lyrics to Love Puts On A New Face & Stay In Touch are up there with Amelia! & Joni's paintings are simply fantastic! I have a question about the cover of "Hejira" that doesn't relate to all the "hidden" images referred to in an earlier thread. When "Hejira" was released, I remember hearing (or reading)that the frozen lake on the cover was Lake Mendota in Madison,WI. I was living there at the time, about 2 blocks from the lakeshore, so of course I thought that was really cool, but don't remember the source of the info, maybe something local in Madison. (This is also supposedly the lake that Otis Redding's plane crashed into.) I searched JMDL and JMHP but couldn't find any references. Anyone out there know the facts? MARCIE Marcie in a coat of flowers Steps inside a candy store Reds are sweet and greens are sour Still no letter at her door So she'll wash her flower curtains Hang them in the wind to dry Dust her tables with his shirt and Wave another day goodbye Marcie's faucet needs a plumber Marcie's sorrow needs a man Red is autumn green is summer Greens are turning and the sand All along the ocean beaches Stares up empty at the sky Marcie buys a bag of peaches Stops a postman passing by And summer goes Falls to the sidewalk like string and brown paper Winter blows Up from the river there's no one to take her To the sea Marcie dresses warm its snowing Takes a yellow cab uptown Red is stop and green's for going Sees a show and rides back down Down along the Hudson River Past the shipyards in the cold Still no letter's been delivered Still the winter days unfold Like magazines Fading in dusty grey attics and cellars Make a dream Dream back to summer and hear how he tells her Wait for me Marcie leaves and doesn't tell us Where or why she moved away Red is angry green is jealous That was all she had to say Someone thought they saw her Sunday Window shopping in the rain Someone heard she bought a one-way ticket And went west again Brian ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Nov 1998 21:18:48 EST From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: Misc. Tom was, of course, the very first singer to perform and record a Joni Mitchell song. He cut a disc of "Urge For Going" in 1966, and "The Circle Game" in 1967, before Buffy St. Marie, before Ian & Sylvia, before Judy Collins. He also toured with Joni as his opening act, and often crashed at Joni and her then husband Chuck's fifth floor walkup apartment in Detroit. Tom has had a nearly 40 year career in music, and during that time he's met and worked with many fascinating people, and we talk about all these subjects in our exclusive "Conversation."
