A few weeks ago Wally Breese posted that Joni has cancelled her schedule
until further notice, including the Charlie Rose show, the Storytellers
taping and interviews. Wally related that she was exhausted after the tour
and has retreated to her place in B.C. for some rest.

Me, too, Mike. I think all of us on the list have learned that you
can't judge a Joni album on first listen, or even on the first five
listens. Maybe the lyrics aren't her absolute best, but how can
anyone not be drawn in by the melodies, and by that warm, warm voice?
In yesterday's NY Times, in an article about music for mature
people, Stephen Holden called TTT "hugely disappointing" (not
explaining why) but even he praised her voice as "lived in."
Finally got the Gershwin CD. Yes, Joni's contribution is awesome,
and yes, the rest of the album is, too.

1. Just got a new CD copy (I had only the album previously) of WTRF - reminded
me of the time when I first bought it. I think my favorite track may be "You
Dream Flat Tires" - I love the rhythm of it, and think Lionel Ritchie's voice
works just fine. Most impressive is the bass track. I had just last Sunday
played "Love" in my Sunday School class as the finale to our Study of that
particular chapter of Paul's - it helped the 11-12th graders to understand
what Paul was saying, I think - especially the part where Joni sings "Love
sees like a child sees". Of course, she then segues into the section of "when
I was a child, I spoke as a child, etc" and says "I put away childish things",
which is a dual meaning thing as she's mourning the fact that she can never
return to the innocent child-like view of love again. This whole record,
called by many her "Happiest" record, has so many bittersweet moments, more on
that later.
2. I also picked up "Gershwin's World" by Herbie Hancock - thanks to all those
who helped push me off the fence to snag this beauty - if you haven't got it
yet, it's quite a treat and is indeed a teaser for Joni's future "Standards"
project.
3. Someone wrote about the latest Springsteen box set - I looked at it but
decided to ask for it for Christmas - rats! now I've gotta wait a month to get
it, and will probably end up buying it myself anyway...Springsteen says in the
new RS "I've created a body of work that expresses fundamentally who I am. And
I am interested in presenting what I do to anybody who's interested. That's
the only way I know how to do it. The way I approach that now any different
than when I started, when I didn't particularly feel that I fit into the mid-
seventies music business. Today I have less access to the mainstream. I'm not
going to be on MTV, and there are probably a lot of radio stations I can't get
on. So I go out and perform when I can. None of that alters anything I do at
this point - that would be foolish. Hey, you have faith in what you do. And
then you do it."
Sounds familiar, huh? I suppose that's a trademark of my favorite artists
(Joni, Bruce, Tom Waits, Elvis C.) that dedication to their integrity.
All for now - leaves are calling.

Yes Fred
Great with the chance meeting of Creeley. Gary Snyder has a crossreference
with the Indian musician community: his wife is a student of the great
bharatanatyam dancer Balasaraswati, whose brother is married to my
music-partner Jody Cormack. .. !
Speaking of which: I'm still trying to get in touch with W S Merwin, since
I keep appropriating his stuff into songs. Anybody know a way to reach
him?

Synchronicity again! My sister bought me WTRF a few weeks ago. Be Cool,
Moon At The Window, Ladies' Man, Love are all really great songs!
I tried looking up Corinthians II:13 and it was just some closing
statement. Was I looking in the wrong place?

Mark,
The scripture being set to music here is I Corinthians, Chapter 13, called by
many "The Love Chapter". WTRF has a bad reference when it says Corinthians
II:13. I sometimes wonder if Paul had someone else write this piece or picked
it up from somewhere else because it doesn't seem to fit with a lot of his
other writings IMO.

Ok, not real sure about the etiquette in doing this, but whatever.
I'm looking for 2 "VideoTrees." They are listed at the bottom of the
http://jmdl.com/tape/ page, listed as VideoTree #1 & VideoTree #2
There aren't any "branches" list for either of them.
If anyone can help me out, I'll love you forever.
Thanks,
RL

Wow! Can you scan it and share? The photo Robbert took of Joni and I are in
the Detroit Concert section- there's a link right after my report, if anyone
wants to see it.

hi all,
i have not seen reference to this magazine article anywhere on the
discussion list or on the jmdl webpage. it is so apropos for our
genius, joni, to be recognized for this!
scientific american presents: exploring intelligence
winter 1998 volume 9 number 4
she is listed on page 22, which is entitled "A Sampling Of
Intelligences"; she is portrayed as the primary example of an individual
with "musical intelligence" (topping the list with a photo!).

I took the trouble to read the journalist reviews re TTT in 1998 and posted
by jmdl.com and I am renewed: Only one was negative; the rest were what we
all believe...great! How to reach these people for Joni? The good need
recognition. Maybe they will write something else better, longer, more
crediting as long as we are interested. Get her some more money, but more
important yet, the interest to put out another recording. The woman is a
god, that we know. But for people to get me to finally listen to "No
Apologies" and "Harlem in Havana", through their words, well that is
journalism.
Thank you JMDL.COM...thank you Wally...you are all the trendsetters. I'm
happy to be on the sidelines, but anxious to promote the woman who filters
all the facets of my life.
