Being quite recently re-connected to the List, I want to know from fellow
Listees who and what version of Joni songs they loved the most.
I certainly consider the following as top-class:
Janis Siegel (Short Stories) - River
Dianne Reeves (Quiet After The Storm) - Both Sides Now
Tuck and Patti (Learning How to Fly) - Woodstock
Cassandra Wilson (Blue Light Till Dawn) - Black Crow
Maire Brennan - Big Yellow Taxi

Muzak's version of "Empty, Try Another"...
but seriously folks,
I just heard Billy Squier's new release of "River" on
his Happy Blue CD, (thanks to Sarah the DJ) and on the liner
notes he says:
"I thought it would be interesting to approach this situation
from the other side, while offering up the odd personal insight.
Why? Who wouldn't want to get closer to Joni?"

Kakki-
Thank you for the thoughts on the Janet P. article. I would love to have
read it (maybe there's an archive address for the Times?). Van Morrison was
the first person I had seen in a REAL CONCERT -(Santa Monica Civic, Feb. '71,
w/John Hammond opening) I was 13 and it was a life-changer!
Re: Van's moodiness, etc....is it just my imagination, or does it just seem
to be part of that Irish mentality. The poetic anguish, the heaven-and-hell,
the romance and the pain. I can relate to Janet - I'm married to someone very
much like that!
I read some very interesting things in a book called "Seven Weeks To
Sobriety" - explaining that it the tendency to be an alcoholic or have that
type of personality is very much influenced by our genes. Certain nations,
supposedly, have built up more of an immunity to alcohol than others, as it
has been a part of their culture much longer. I'd have to obtain the book
again to get the numbers down, but it really seemed to jibe.
Again, Kakki, just want to say I really enjoy your posts!

Subject: t-shirt sayings/ joni's cats
Hi everyone,
I'm new to the JMDL (digest) and have really enjoyed lurking for a couple
weeks. The t-shirt saying thread has been fun, I have a suggestion I don't
think I've seen:
front: input-output-
back: electricity
I too was really impressed by Joni's paintings on TTT and especially
because they feature her cats! I've read on Wally's site, or maybe in JMDL
articles about the inspiration for "Man from Mars", and that the cat on the
cover is "El Cafe", but does anyone know the other cats names, or any
stories? The one on the cd looks like an abyssinian. Sorry if this has been
discussed before I came on board.
I'm really excited about the possibility that we "unlucky ones" may have a
chance to get t-shirts or even lithographs via JMHP. I've always loved
Joni's artwork as much as her music, and have loved that the last 2 cds
have included so many paintings. Anyone who saw lithographs for sale at the
concerts remember what they cost?
And what is this about being left or right handed? Sorry, I just keep
thinking of questions.
Only one of my friends is a fan of JM, and we've lost touch, so finding
JMDL has been great for me--I'm not so isolated anymore!

>Maire Brennan - Big Yellow Taxi
Interesting choice and produced by The Blue Nile to
boot.
The best cover of a Joni Mitchell song (imho) remains
Woodstock by Mathews Southern Comfort from 1970. A
beautiful arrangement with sun kissed harmonies and lovely
pedal steel by Gordon Huntley. It went to number one in
summer 1970 (interesting concept that - a good song at
number one in the charts).
Bubbling under :
I Don't know where I Stand - Fairport Convention
Same Situation - Clive Gregson and Christine Collister
Night In The City - Bridget St John
Worst :
Both Sides Now - the Johnstons
Even Worse:
Big Yellow Taxi - Ami Grant (is that her name ? it was on
the radio this morning anyway.)

Fabulous in musical talent or fabulous in great to look at?
I vote for the second one. He's a doll. I think his name was mentioned on
list a couple of weeks ago but I forget.
It's hard for me to tell musical talent when it was all so loud.. kind of
chaotic too. But that's only MHO.
I love all the tee-shirt ideas. You used to be able to buy letters to iron
on tee-shirts so I guess we could make our own individual ones. The Powers
that Be wouldn't sue for one tee-shirt.
I want to welcome all our new members. I'm not very prolific but I read
most posts. I know how it is to not have anyone to speak Joni-ese with!
It's awful to know fabulous literary works in a language that no one around
you can understand. That is what it was like for me until I found this
list. There's so much depth to Joni's lyrics and music. Knowing it yourself
is so unfulfilling as compared to discussing it with someone else. So enjoy!

Hi JMDLers! The reason I asked (in my "pop" quiz) when Joni started
smoking again is because she said something in her PPV concert, when
she was relating that wonderful story about knitting half-naked on
the bed, about having stopped smoking at that time. Does anyone else
remember her mentioning that?!?! Silly me...I was just assuming she
was successful in her attempt...at least for a while anyway.

Hello, again! Kakki, thank you for answering all my questions on the

Joni's eyes--twinkling sapphire blue. The reason I asked is because
on Wally's homepage, it looks like her eyes are brown! And it
appeared that way to me when she was walking onstage on her PPV show.
I got a bit cornfused! I don't know why...I've had her "For the

Marilyn,
She has beautiful sparkling blue eyes that are intense and gentle at the same
time.
Terry, who was lucky enough to see them up close!

Hi all UK Joni fans,
I'm going to see Lucinda Williams this Sunday evening at Shepherd's Bush
Empire. I think Azeem is also going to be there. If anyone else is planning
to go, we could meet before the show. Let me know!

I second that emotion!
On the album cover it's "Fwy" and in the liner notes it's "Fly." I suppose
the JMDL police have corrected you 300 times already, Ric! :-)

Two reaccuring images I have noted in Joni's songs are torn stockings and it
seems loud wires in walls. She must go through those nylons with one heck of
a headache. :~<>
Other t-shirts: "Don't interrupt the sorrow."
"I'm so hard to handle, I'm selfish and I'm sad."

My other favorite line for a T-shirt, which could be dressed up with the sad

OK, so there I was in the men's room at Damon's in Orange Park, Fla., earlier
tonight with my son Jacob (who turns 6 on Saturday) because I'd promised him
we could go to Damons for ribs and NTN trivia games after his T-ball season
ended. (They lost their final game Wednesday 16-14, but finished the season
11-3).
And what do I see?
A guy in his early 20s, maybe mid 20s, wearing a Turbulent Indigo T-shirt
just like the one I bought at the Atlanta concert last week.
So I said, "I've got a short just like that one." (OK, so mine is an XL.)
"What, this one?" the guy asks.
"Yes," I say. "I bought it in Atlanta at the concert."
Turns out that's where he got his, too.
And that he also had the feeling after Joni's performance that he didn't
really care to see Dylan, but his girlfriend made him stay.
Or maybe it was that he didn't to go to the Ritz-Carlton instead.
Anyway, I mentioned that I got to meet her and Chris and I exchanged brief
stories about how we first got hooked on Joni. He first liked Court and Spark,
but also said his parents were big fans of Joni's as well. (I tried to ignore
that comment from the lad.)
I asked if he had a computer. He said he did and that he'd checked out the
Wally's JM homepage numerous times, but he had not heard of the JMDL site. So
I wrote it down for him. Then Jacob and I went back to our table to finish
Jacob's dessert and finish beating the other NTN Trivia players for the fourth
straight game (stole Game 3 cause I knew Olivia DeHavilland was in GWTW and
the others didn't. Won Game 4 because I cleaned up on the 2,000-point baseball
question. Don't mess with me on those, folks.)
So maybe we will see a second person from Jacksonville here in the JMDL
someday soon.

Well, he's no Robbie Robertson, that's for sure. I thought Dylan's backups in
the Atlanta show were unimaginative and repetitive -- in a word, boring.
Nothing the guitarist did made me even look in his direction, from what I can
recall.

Funny, I never heard their version, though I was very much alive in the summer
of 1970 and have heard other stuff by that band (don't ask me to name one,
though).
Still, I'd vote for Tom Rush's cover of either "Urge for Going" or "Tin
Angel." His different arrangements, especially on "Urge," are superb and his
voice really can carry those songs quite well.

Thought some of you'd appreciate this...it's basically self-explanatory,
and was written by my friend Moe. I think you can see the tattoo on the
cover of Either/Or and if you do a web search on Elliott, one of the fan
sites has a good photo of the tattoo, if you're interested.

Let me tell you one reason why I LOVE Elliott Smith. I'm sure some of
you know this story. On his right arm is a tattoo of a bull smelling
flowers. His name is Ferdinand and he spends his days smelling flowers.
One day, the farmer comes to select one bull for the fight. While
smelling flowers, Ferdinand is stung by a bee and runs and jumps all
over the field because of the pain. The farmer picks him because he
seems the most combative and strong. Once in the bullring, people throw
flowers for the bullfighter and instead of fighting, Ferdinand smells
them. So he's taken back to his field and he lives old smelling the
flowers. People think that he is dumb and stupid but in fact he is the
smartest of the bulls because he escaped a certain death. He does not
want to be part of the system. Elliott Smith says he recognizes himself
a lot in Ferdinand and so do I. This guy is great :)

Sorry, I've missed most of this thread - I'm back in Toronto again (wishing Jioni was playing here again. What is Kilaurin's last name - maybe I'll look her up after my yoga class on Saturday?)
The two recent covers I've enjoyed the most are:
Sarah McLachlin - Blue
Annie Lennox - Ladies of the Canyon

Hi Paul,
This is a nice story. It is also another reason why we should find a way to do the t-shirt thing. We'll all know we're out there - not alone in our hometowns.
