That's a funny story! Van certainly did meet and hang out with The Band
during this period. He co-wrote a song with Robbie Robertson, I think it
was "4% Pantomime" which showed up on one of the The Band's albums. This
was when Robbie started referring to Van as "The Belfast Cowboy". Maybe Van
was trying to get closer to Bob through his friends.
Van does a great line in Dylan covers, back to "Them" days (It's all over
now, baby blue). I saw him twice last weekend and on Friday night he played
a stunning "Just Like a Woman", the highlight of a great Van show, full of
quips like "Queen Mary (that's a ship), she's my friend (Huh! some friend)".
I don't know the truth about the Brown-eyed/Brown-skinned girl. But since
Chuck Berry pulled the same trick in Brown-eyed Handsome Man, perhaps it
was a somewhat knowing nod-and-wink, rather than a meek submission to the
record company. Van isn't known for meek submission!!! He got his revenge
on the producer of Brown-eyed girl, Bert Berns, later recording an
hours-worth of 2 minute nonsense ditties generally mocking and abusing
Berns, in order to fulfill his remaining contract.
Lest this turn into the Van list, I'lll stop now!!

Subject: Old ideals
Hi,
Someone mentioned that Joni may be referring to seeing her performance
at the Isle of Wight Fest with the lines "I saw the ghosts of my old
ideals rerun on channel 5..." Well, since there was no film of the Isle
of Wight Fest -1970 until the 1990's, that's definitely not possible.
Also, Joni wasn't referring to the film of her performance at the
Monterey Pop Fest, because she is not in that film. I offer that Joni may
have been referring to her 1969 performance in "Celebration at Big Sur,"
which was released as a feature film in 1971.

Zimmerman hardly gave Joni or Van the time of day on the West Coast mini-tour,
it seems. Remember Joni telling the anecdote about Van asking her if she'd
talked to Bobby, her saying, like, "he doesn't hang out much" and them
sneaking on stage to sing with him on "I Shall Be Released" on the first stop
on the tour? But then they never sang together again.
From what I've heard, Dylan is on what his devotees call the "Neverending
Tour." Word is he virtually lives on his tour bus and talks to no one.
Straight from bus to stage, then after his set he exits stage right directly
to the coach and onto the next town. Guess he's a wallflower.
Btw, history recalls that Van has shown reverence for other contemporaries
apart from Dylan. He clearly idolizes John Lee Hooker and has voiced
admiration for Frankie.

I love the Joni clips in this. They convey such a slice of the idealism of
that time. She talks about it being a time of political and spiritual
revolution where people are starting to get together. Then she leads
Crosby, Stills, Nash and (looks like) John Sebastian in an extended version
of the song "Get Together"
"Love is but a song we sing, fear's the way we die,
you can make the mountains ring or make the angels cry,
though the bird is on the wing and you may not know why,
come on people now, smile on your brother,
everybody get together, try and love one another right now..."
She also performs "Woodstock" at the piano and asks the crowd to join in the
song.

That's a good point. God knows that I would not want my hang-dog
peccadillos spread out for the public to see. (as if they'd be interested,
but youse guys get the point).
Of course, one of the many curses of being a public figure is this
potential exposure. And to push it some more, an artist puts so much of
their own vulnerable self out for consumption.
I guess this falls under the heading: "treat others as you would want to
be treated," an ideal that can often fall by the wayside.

Maybe I should have typed out the entire article to put things in a better
context. I did not think she was trying to humiliate him at all or
necessarily revealing intimate knowledge. Since Van and Bob did eventually
become friends, maybe they laughed over this story themselves at a later
time. A large part of the "theme" of the interview is about their youthful
hopes, ideals and silliness on both sides in the early days of their
marriage and his career. Janet is just as unflattering to herself as she
talks about some of her wild, far-out hippie notions at the time. She is
frank about her problems with Van, but it is nothing we have not heard
before - his moodiness, his drinking, etc., but it is obvious that she loved
him extremely and that their relationship has left a lifelong impact on her.
It is also her story about the legend of their fairy tale romance, her
desperate efforts to live up to, and perpetuate it, often under horrible and
draconian pressures from his business machine, and her ultimate inability to
continue living up to the fantasy image of their relationship while raising
two small children and dealing with his rages. While this may seem a
betrayal of confidence on her part, it actually gave me a little more
insight and sympathetic understanding into Van and some of the crap that
both he and Janet had to go through in the early days.

Subject: Joni on muscianmag.com
In the online Musician Mag interview with Joni she states about perfect pitch:
"I don't know if I have that, but I have finer pitch than most people
around me. Mingus and I heard things on records that no one else did. He
was kindred in that way. He pointed out things on my records that were out
of tune that I had argued with people about. The first thing Mingus said to
me when I met him was, "The strings on 'Paprika Plains' are out of tune!"
He meant to be confronting me, but I said, "Yeah! Thank you!" Because the
conductor didn't hear it, the engineer didn't hear it; everybody thought I
was just being picayune."
- -------------------------------------------------
I always thought the string arangement was meant to be disonant to push the
mood hard and stormy and as a sort of nod to the early twentieth century
avant-gardests like Stravinsky and Varesse'. I wonder how many other
prominent musicians have this complaint about their work. I've got an
interview with Mike Oldfield where he complains about the bass on "Tubular
Bells" being out of tune for instance.
- -------------------------------------------------
And then about DED:
"...with "Dog Eat Dog," Elliott Summer, behind my back, made them all
producers and gave them all authority. That was a nightmare for me! I was
in tears through half of that record. I wanted big Brazilian drums, which
were not in vogue at that time; this was pre-world beat. So the drum sounds
are a compromise. Other than that, it's all my music, except that it's
Dolby's sound, which he'd get off the keyboard and give me the keyboard to
play them was also a lot of effort...
>>snip<<
...And because of the presence of Thomas Dolby, it was assumed that I had
been musically taken over and that it was an attempt at being commercial,
whereas in fact people don't know that I was a dancer. I don't really like
the dumbness of straight disco, but all of the drum patterns on there were
my programming. I chose where the little beats went and the big beats went.
Now, the sonics on it don't hold up for me. I don't like some of the
sounds. The people who were providing them were prejudiced because it
wasn't the hip thing yet. They were trying to push me in a way I couldn't
go, because I heard this big drum sound..."
{Interviewer}-"Like in "The Jungle Line."
"Yeah, in Brazil. I'd been there during Carnival, where everybody was
beating on anything they could beat on. There were big formations of them
coming down the street, and they were passing by each other, so you had
even more complex rhythms. So in the musical way of it, because I loved
that so much, it was my time to put it out, whether it was hip or not. But
world beat was yet to come."
- -------------------------------------------------
OK, this I've got to hear! Maybe we can have a bake sale to raise the jack
so Joni can go back in the studio and re-mix DED with all real drums ie:

Ooops that reminds me about a Morrison interview I read in a car
audio magazine a few years ago. The car stereo man asked
Morrison about the background to some of his songs, which
seemed to me like a reasonable enough approach. Morrison
however went into a rant about the music biz to the effect that
his music was just a job and that the songs have nothing at all to
do with reality or with any other part of his life. He added that
the record sleeves are about creating illusions like the illusion
that he lived on the ranch pictured on Tupelo Honey or that he
owned a big dog like on Veedon Fleece sleeve. I don't

With the clock ticking down to my big 4-0, I'm looking to arrange a special
outing with my best friend who will be kicking around the same baggage.
Since a trip to Paris is out of the question this year, I'm going to keep it to
a weekend out in NYC.
What would make things really neat would be to track down a group or
the leader singer of a group that my friend and I used to see all the time in
NY back in the mid to late 70's. I'm hoping that someone out there in JMDL
land knows about them.
They played the NY-NJ Metro area and were called "Grover, Margaret
and Zaz Zu Zaz." Anyone out there remember them? Ever see them?
Kinda swing, kinda jazz - we used to see them at Back Fence, (I think),
and other places around NYC.
Would appreciate any leads from NY area, (or used to be), JMDL'ers.
Thanks!

Subject: Smokin' songs
I was researching for a paper I'm doing involving the 1970s, and one of
the books I found was sort of a nostalgia collection, nothing of real help
to me. It was called "The 1970s: From Hot Pants to Hot Tubs." In the
music chapter there was a section on songs and drugs... in other words,
songs to listen to when doing different drugs. Here are a few samples,
including the Joni ones that were mentioned:
Drug Song/Album
$20 oz./pot Greatful Dead, "Truckin'"
Valium Carpenters, "Rainy Days and Mondays"
Homegrown Joni Mitchell, Court & Spark
Colombian Joni Mitchell, Hissing of Summer Lawns
It listed them by year, and it incorrectly mentioned C&S as a 1972
example. But I still thought this was pretty humorous! I would have
mentioned Hejira as an album to listen to while doing cocaine.

Yes!!!
I just returned from a show in Tortola, sorry for the delay. Will be
sending all out tomorrow. The video tapes turned out wonderfully.

PS -- for anyone else who hasn't recorded the event, now is a good time
to request a copy.

Yes.

I also read an interview somewhere where Van ranted that there was no ranch,
no horses and so on. Didn't know about the big dog, though, and in my more
naive days thought that was really his castle, too!
Just to clarify why I thought the story about his wanting so badly to meet
Dylan was amusing - In my very subjective opinion Van is worlds ahead of
Dylan on numerous levels, and I was amused that it seemed that Van had not
yet realized back then that he was more than Dylan's equal. I found the
story rather endearing.

Just a quick note to tell you that I played half of Taming the Tiger
during walk-in for the Umi Fashion show in Tortola last Friday night. I
used Trouble Man for the formal wear. Gave away several copies of both
to those who inquired about her. New fans in the British Virgin
Islands!
