Howard W. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 10:38:37 +0000 (GMT) From: Howard Wright Subject: Joni interview, guitar tunings Thanks to Dennis Leong for pointing us to www.musicianmag.com for the full length Joni interview (head for the "Art" section of the site folks). There is a lot of interesting stuff there. A note for the guitarists on the list, Joni says: "The VG8 has this palette of presets that you can't access except by standard tuning ... so I had to learn a little bit of standard guitar tuning - well enough, at least, to figure out how to put the horns on "Man From Mars". Most of the sweetening was done on the guitar in standard tuning, which is a real exercise for me" No wonder I had trouble figuring out the tuning and guitar parts for MFM!!! I thought all the parts used the same tuning - it sounds like the main guitar uses an altered tuning, and all the overdubbed horn parts are done with standard tuning, so she uses two tunings for the same song. I wonder if this is the first time she has recorded guitar parts for the same song using more than one tuning? She does the same thing on Harlem In Havana and Lead Balloon, but I don't think she's done this on previous albums. Older movies and the tie in with other..."I come from open prairies, given some wisdom and a lot of jive..." seems to allude more to my interpretation. I'm so grateful to our heroine for extending herself for our benefit. Tour #2 with Dylan went smoothly, even with Joni becoming irked enough at three shows to vocally chastise a few noisy and distracting audience members. The tour was also a success on the financial side. In fact, the Madison Square Garden show on November 1st was the 6th highest-grossing concert of that week, grossing over 1 million dollars in ticket sales. The article says that she was the inspiration for many of Van's early songs - they met in 1966. It is apparently the first interview she has given in years and includes three photos of the young Van with daughter Shana as a baby. She only began speaking to Van again in 1994. I'm fairly certain she is the woman some of us saw with Van and Shana at the Bel Air Hotel bar after the first Pauley concert. She has quietly been a professional songwriter for many years and has many projects to her credit. Here is an amusing excerpt -- Janet says they moved to Woodstock, N.Y. (in 1969) largely to be in the vicinity of Bob Dylan, who was living there at the time. "Van fully intended to become Dylan's best friend, but the whole time we were there they never met," She winced at the memory. "Every time we'd drive past Dylan's house - Van didn't drive, I did - Van would just stare wistfully out the window at the gravel road leading to Dylan's place. He thought Dylan was the only contemporary worthy of his attention. But back then Bob just wasn't interested in him." The article also notes that Shana's first showcase performance for a Los Angeles audience is scheduled for December 2nd at the Opium Den in Hollywood. (I did at least manage to find a nice suit :-) Never heard the muzak version of Carey before, never realized it existed. I couldn't help but wonder if I was the only person in the store who could "name that tune." I started singing along, but had to stop because the tempo was a little off. -Kenny ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 01:22:31 EST From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: Brown Eyed Girl article (NJC) In a message dated 11/18/98 1:18:40 AM Eastern Standard Time, kakkib@att.net writes: << There's a very interesting and poignant story and interview in today's LA Times (Section E) with Van Morrison's former wife Janet "Planet" Morrison Minto. >> Kakki, Despite your subject title, I am thinking you did not intend to imply that Janet is the "Brown-eyed Girl." I have heard from several sources over the years that Van's original version of the song was "Brown-skinned Girl" but that he changed it under pressure from his record company. Times mistake (or superficiality) then. Reminds me that on some TV sitcom last night I saw someone try to make a joke that he really wrote lyrics that Janis Joplin turned into "Me and Bobby McGee" without giving him credit. Only problem is the TV scriptwriter didn't know that song was written by Kris Kristofferson, not Janis. So now I'm curious. Who correctly is the brown-eyed girl in the song, or was Van just using artisitic license? Therefore, there is no brown-eyed girl, per se.
