I called the station this year actually to get a copy, but they gave me a big runaround about how since it has been more than 6 months since it was aired, they no longer have copyright to sell it. So, my question is, who has the copyright to it now? I wrote to the station asking how I can get a copy, but of course they didn't answer me. It was a great interview, very relaxed and funny, with Joni talking to the audience throughout since she knew most everyone. I think Don was the one who interviewed her. She also sang ML too! Reading this and other memories of this song brought back an archtypically miserable summer family car trip between Washington state and Arizona-- not quite five years old, stuck in the back seat with two siblings for a three day drive through what appeared to me to be the never ending middle of nowhere. Only occasionally in the daytime could we get any AM radio reception. When the parents could find a station, the only song we seemed able to pick up was "Downtown." Fifteen hundred miles each direction of kids whining and crying, silence, and "Downtown." I've not been a big Petula fan, but about 20 years after the car trip, on impulse, I bought the song on a cd single, popped it in the player and sang along word for word, from start to finish. Thrasher To: Gerald Notaro Subject: Joni Review Dear Jerry, Enjoyed reading all the mail about Joni and your trip. Thanks so much for thinking of me. I came across a Joni & Bob review that was in our Buffalo News written by Anthony Violanti that I will send you but will type a condensed version so you can forward it on. Bob Dylan looks forward, Joni Mitchell looks back....(Headline) Rochester - Age is no barrier for icons. While John Glenn was soaring through the heavens, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, a couple of other historical figures of the 1960's gave a rousing and gritty performance Tues. night in Roch Blue Cross Arena. Dylan 57, tours constantly, but for Mitchell 55, it was a rare live performance in this part of the state. She is on her first tour in nearly 15 years. Teaming with Dylan made Mitchell's appearance more special, despite her flu-weakened physical condition and a somewhat hoarse voice. "I'm in kind of a state of mild delirium," she said at one point in her one hour set. "We flew in here and I barely made it." She started off her show with a raspy version of one of her standards, "Big Yellow Taxi." She stood alone on stage, playing an electric guitar. Age has not diminished her appearance; she still is radiant with high cheekbones, flowing blond hair and an alluring stage presence. Mitchell's mood was at first humorous, but it soon switched to irritable. During "Taxi," she joked with the crowd saying, "This is how Bob Dylan would sing it," and then went into a nasal, twangy imitation of Dylan. That brought laughs, but her attitude quickly changed on the next number. Michell, who went on about 10 minutes early, stood alone on stage playing the opening notes on her guitar to "Just Like This Train," a slow number that builds with momentum. A number of people were still walking to their seats when suddenly Mitchell stopped playing the song. "It's really hard to concentrate with all you people moving out there," she snarled into the mircophone. "I'll give you a minute to move, and then we'll start again." She stood silently glaring at the crowd for nearly a minute. A nervous silence fell over the audience, as if they were being scolded by a teacher in class. Mitchell, obviously bothered by the flu, picked up the beat to the song and all was well. She later apologized for her outburst. "That's OK, Joni, we love you," one male fan yelled out, and M smiled and said, "Thank you." M's set was for the most part earnest and solemn. She is known for her musical experimentation and this night was another example of her daring. She turned to a soft jazz sound for a number of songs, and seemed to delight in challenging the fans. Not all of the paying customers were ready to accept M's improvisations, but they sat quietly and listened. As she sang each song, though, the music picked up its own intensity. The music was so intelligent and the lyrics so deep that fans had to make a commitment to the performer and her work. Most did, but some remained lost. The music reached a peak on M's last two songs. She sang a soulful and emotional version of M. Gaye's "Trouble Man." She looked like a torch singer in an ankle-length satin dress. Smoking a cig, she slinked around the stage as her four-piece band supplied the musical backing. M was riveting on her cover of Billie Holiday's "Comes Love." She did justice to H's blues number. The encore featured M alone on stage one more with her guitar doing "Woodstock." This was not the young and idealistic version, but a rather stark look back from a veteran who lived through hard times. Dylan, in contrast to Mitchell, was feeling frisky all night long.....etc. etc. (will send the rest of the article via snail mail) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Nov 1998 09:21:22 -0500 (EST) From: "Gerald Notaro (LIB)" Subject: Re: Downtown [NJC) > It reminds me of that Murphy Brown Xmas episode, the one she and her > co-workers are locked out in a terrace outside their office, and Corky > starts singing Downtown. Happy weekend to all my JMDL pals! It was a great week - getting to relay my Joni concert stories to folks I work with that now my love for Joni. It was also a little bit of synchonicity that I played through all of Joni's catalogue this week. You see, at home and in the car I toss in assortments of artists, but at work I play my CD's in alphabetical order by artist (not because I'm anal/obsessive/compulsive) but because it makes it easy to trade 'em out each evening. Well, it just so happened that Monday started with Midnight Oil, Steve Miller, and then on to Joni! As I always display the jewel box for whatever I'm playing, a couple of folks on their way to the coffee pot eventually popped their heads in and asked "Just how much Joni Mitchell do you have," "I didn't know she was still recording," etc. It gave me a chance to spread the word about TTT and other recordings. Amazing how many music fans stop at "Court & Spark"! Victims of Radio, I guess... Plus, I got TT #5/6 yesterday from the hippest guy in Deptford, NJ...so I'm enjoying new recordings of live + interviews + miscellaneous stuff. Life is good... Your posts are often delightful and insightful to those of us less familiar with Joni. I have still yet to see her despite having now seen approaching 300 concerts since my first in 1977. This last tour, all possible shows fell on work nights for me and I would have forfeited a rather nice attendance bonus as well as my regular pay had I taken off work, even for Joni, alas. An injury kept me from Bethel, and jetting to the west coast is not within my range of possibility. My 1993 show was cancelled in the 11th hour and I'd not really yet "discovered" Joni in "83 & '79. To top things off, as I sat with friends to watch the PPV, we lost the signal midway through BYT and never got it back, so I've not even seen that! (any help appreciated) So, as you can see, it has not exactly been a banner Joni year for me. Let me also say that I regard her among my top ten favorite musical artists and she is the only one among them I've yet to see. Now I love reading the show reviews and Joni meet & greets, and I do not wish to be percieved as "sour grapes", but I must take exception with something you've written, and others have alluded to lately: >...and it most likely did curb the milling about >and Dylan Deadhead rude behaviors. I have seen the Dead 90 times and Dylan 12 times. They both share spots in my Top Ten with Joni and I 'm proud to call myself a Deadhead. For you (and some others) to simply label all rude behaviors observed as "Deadhead" is very RUDE and very WRONG. In fact it is downright PREJUDICE. I'm not defending rude behavior. I'm defending Deadheads (or any group of people) from stereotyped labels applied to them as a whole by unthinking, close-minded people. Think about how you feel when people put you down for liking Joni. Please think before you type and offend a very large segment of society (many of which share this forum) in the future. gdave - ----------------------------------------------------------------- DaveBase @ http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stage/2349/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Nov 1998 16:54:00 -0000 From: "philip" Subject: NJC - Raitt and Yearwood duet last night Declining my younger companions offer to join them in a club with thumping music I got home in time to witness Bonnie Raitt and Trisha Yearwood perform a stunning version of Charlie Rich's song Fell Like Goin Home on the Later With Jools Holland show.
