I remember that, shortly after Joni reunited with Kilauren, that a friend of
Joni's who was on the list printed out some particularly beautiful posts
discussing that and other topics and showed them to Joni. It was reported
that Joni was very touched and got teary reading them.
I don't think Joni logs on to read us, but I've heard too many things in the
wind over time that give me a very strong feeling that she knows us a little
more than we might think.

The accompanying book alone is worth the price if you like Dusty. I read
someone mention Dusty In Memphis, which is now acknowledged as a
groundbreaking classic. Also, the Very Best of Dusty Springfield cd just
came out and has some great cuts on it. Taylor Dane (whom I'm going to
get to see in a few weeks) just recorded You Don't Have to Say You Love

Diane,
This is really a good idea......Joni's novel or short story
would only be released on audio...so she would have
to read her own story....interjecting some singing now

envious but only because I was really happy for those who got to meet HER and
talk to HER. The stories about the meetings teemed with joy and
excitement--I'd like to know how anyone could get ticked off about that?
I think we went overboard on this one.

A little more info on Dusty for those who've asked...
For the past few years Dusty has been battling breast cancer. The
cancer unfortunately has spread to her bones. The latest info I could
find is that she is doing better lately, thank goodness. She did have
a tumor removed a few years ago and has been going through
chemotherapy treatments in the last few months.
Also, for those of you interested in buying _Dusty in Memphis_, you
may want to wait until the end of January. Rhino is releasing a deluxe
edition then with an entire unreleased album and various other
goodies. I believe the release date in 1/19/99.
The new box set is excellent and spans her work with the folk-pop
group The Springfields in the late '50s to her guest spot with the Pet
Shop Boys on "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" in the late '80s.

I don't think anyone perceived any of the stories of Joni meetings as
flauntings. I for one was never offended or otherwise put off by the
stories. Hurrah for all of you who did meet her! I am truly happy for
those who wanted to meet her and were able to make it happen.
I appreciate you saying the "I don't understand ... why a true fan wouldn't
want the chance to..." In my post of a few days ago, I was simply
expressing my personal reasons for not pursuing a meeting with Joni. And I
can accept that you or anyone else may not be able to understand that. So,
in light of the judgmental, sarcastic nastiness that came my way after my
post -- being accused of "denial" and "rationalization" and having words I
didn't write being put into my mouth -- your simple, honest statement of "I
don't understand" is very welcome, completely understood, and appreciated.
As I said a few days ago, everyone here has his/her own personal
relationship with Joni's music, and I don't believe that wanting to meet
her is a pre-requisite for being a "true fan." I think that I've given her
plenty of thanks by the many hundreds of dollars I've spent on her over the
years, what with LPs, replacing the LPs with CDs, videos, sheet music
books, the lyric book, giving her CDs as gifts, thereby creating new Joni
consumers, and the very steep ticket prices of this year. Plus I'm sure
I'll buy the PPV special when it comes out on video...
So, I have no problem with the fact that people want to meet and have met
Joni. I have no problem with people telling us all about it -- I enjoy the
stories. What I do have a problem with is people who know jack shit about
me publicly making judgments of my character and psychological make-up just
because I stated a personal conviction that apparently does not conform to
those of most people on this list -- and then justifying that offensive
bullshit in the name of this being a free, unmoderated list, where people
are free to "fart" where they will and find "amusement" where they will.
Apparently, it is also a list where people are free to make baseless value
judgements where they will.
So, Bob, don't feel for even a moment that your posts about meeting Joni
were anything less than welcome. I got a huge kick out of your chutzpah --
actually asking the lady to dance! What a hoot!

Kay, I loved this last sentence. The "I don't understand" is what should
happen. DIfferent points of view being discussed is what an
unmoderated list is all about. To disagree honestly and share one's
thoughts without accusations and flames is what makes an exchange
special.
>>As I said a few days ago, everyone here has his/her own personal

So very true. Some relationships just look at the art, others want to know
every tiny nugget about the creator. Some see their purchase of the art
thanks enough, others feel compelled to bring flowers to concerts or
send gifts or look for a way to say more thanks. Nothing wrong with
either side.
I wonder if some of the harping and biting in this thread comes from
confusing the desire of a fan to meet up with Joni with celebrity big game
hunting. Meeting a "star" just because they are famous and getting an
autograph or photo op. It doesn't sound like that has happened w/ these
encounters. Just true and sincere fans who were extremely respectful
of their lucky meetings.

But...this is what makes an unmoderated list. Respectful debates and
exchanges mix right in with the farts and the amusement. Perhaps we all
grow a little from reading all of these exchanges.
>>So, Bob, don't feel for even a moment that your posts about meeting

Ditto! I loved reading about all of the meetings! They were fabulous tales
and they opened up what was for me, an interesting thread about why

This list never ceases to amaze me, especially how we like the same
icons that are so different from Joni. I just got Petula's new cd this
week. It is wonderful. Also have tickets to see her May 5th of next year
in Sunset Blvd. Saw her 32 years ago in Toronto. I still have the signed
program. She was so wonderful to her teen aged fans. Saw her in Blood

I admit to finding this whole deconstruction thing unfathomable, and
applying the theory to literature kills any joy I could take in a
novel or poem.
A long time ago, I sent Les a piece called "How Joni Mitchell Fails"
by some deconstructionist (or at least postmodernist) critic,
an Eng. Lit guy from NYU. It trashed Hejira, of all albums. Fair
enough, but the guy was so in love with his own analysis that he was
blind to Joni's art, as far as I'm concerned. Seems to be an
occupational hazard with the literary deconstructionists. They
scathe the wonder world and praise barbarities.
I'm guessing that Les was unable to scan the piece for the web
page, because my photocopy was piss-poor. Does anyone know this
article? It appeared in the Village Voice, and the author was Perry
Somebody. (Meisel? Weisel??)

Hey! Kandinsky is my favorite artist! Be nice! I don't know if you can get
the prints outside of the concert arena. I asked if I could order shirts
some time in the future and the vendors said no only during concerts. I
suggest you go to your local copy place that has a color lazer copier.
They could enlarge the CD cover up to 11"X17" for about $4.00.

Today's entries are both from Wally's bio page:
1993: Joni receives a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Saskatchewan
Recording Industry Association. The presentation was held at the Willows
Golf Resort in Saskatoon and attended by her parents and former teachers.
Joni said "Awards don't mean that much to me. That people like the music is
the best award." After the presentation Joni gave an hour long interview
and performed a new song called 'The Magdalene Laundries" that she said she
planned to record with Sinead O'Connor on background vocals.
1994: Today, Joni was in London, England for a solo showcase for the media
at a townhouse off Gloucester Road in South Kensington. Before the event,
Joni was interviewed and performed "Sunny Sunday" and "Sex Kills" on the
BBC series "The Late Show." At around a quarter to 7 in the evening Joni
went on stage and performed for more than an hour in front of 200 media and
record company people from all over Europe. She said to the audience "I
don't know how to address you; you're not all Brits..Spain? Italy? France?
Do we have France? And I hear there's someone here from Greece." Her set
included "Refuge of the Roads," "Night Ride Home," her newest pair of tunes
"Loves' Cries" and "Happiness is the Best Facelift," as well as a few
selections from the album she was there to promote, "Sex Kills,"
"Magdelaine Laundries," Sunny Sunday," and "Yvette in English." She
referred to Crosby before she sang "Yvette" and the fact that he was in a
California hospital waiting for a liver transplant. (He'd actually had the
transplant operation a few hours before her show started). An amazing
footnote is that Joni didn't smoke a single cigarette for the duration of
her show!

And they got the wings to go
They got the urge for going
When the meadow grass is turning brown
Summertime is falling down and winter
is closing in
Apply the fire with kindling now (I'LL PLY THE FIRE WITH KINDLING NOW)
I'll pull the blankets up to my chin
I'll lock the vagrant winter out and
I'll fold my wandering in (I'LL BOLT MY WANDERING IN)
I'd like to call back summertime
Have her stay for another

But she's got the urge for going
So I'll have to let her go..."

I love this essay. I don't feel Gould is "deconstructing" Petula's songs.
They rather become culturale assets through his consideration.

I vote WITH for 'getting out', but disagree with
"I'll ply": I think it's "apply". She's pulling the blankets
up, talking to someone else. Command form (grammar
- -soon I'll be apologizing for that, too!) I am also with
JMRC on "fold my wandering in" It's not that she doen't
want her wanderlust to pull her away, it's that she "never
seems to go" Again with the geese motiff, also.
That's my vote.

Listen to the Tom Rush version and you'll hear the lyrics so clearly there
will be no question in your mind.
Joni is a wordsmith and would use an uncommon verb like "ply." She's NOT
talking to someone else.
And "bolt" my wandering in goes perfectly with "lock" the vagrant winter out.
How does "Fold" fit with that? It doesn't.
Sorry, Bern, but I've heard Joni perform this song live and listened to both
her recording and Tom Rush's hundreds of times each. The lyric sheet on "Hits"
is simply wrong, as are many of the lyrics published even in her recent book.

If you say so, but I still think I'm right:
Rush may have changed some words,
Pete Seeger did. PS However, you're
adamance about your credentials was
impressive.
Are you with me on ALL JONI SUNDAY???
PPS Are you really saying her BOOK is wrong
while YOU are right? That's bold! I like it.

Yes, I am, but it was established by other list members when the book first
came out that it is fraught with erroneous lyrics. Unfortunately, it seems
they published a book of her lyrics and never bothered to check with Joni to
see that they were correct.

I remember my older sister bought the single 'Downtown' but I think I
played it more than she did. Had to memorize every word & every note.
I think the Harry Belafonte uproar was that Petula actually put her arm
around his waist while they were singing together. On American TV! In
the early 60's! Horror! Gasp! Seems ridulous now but it didn't to a
lot of people at the time. Thank the powers that be that such extreme
narrow-mindedness is at least not perceived as acceptable anymore.
