thankx to Joni Mitchell and Eagle Rock Entertainment a decision was made
to include some of her many fans in the audience during the filming that

an invitation was relayed to members of *this* discussion list thru

Jaco Pastorius is such an outsized talent that his brilliance eclipsed his
drunken bass-playing. His death is just as dramatic. And to my opinion,
his bass lines in Joni's Hejira (most esp. Coyote) is such an aural
experience.

Subject: Joni and Jazz
I too consider Joni's voice a great instrument to sing jazz. She sounds
eerily like a saxophone on the lower register (the late Betty Carter and
Scandinavian jazz singer Urszula
Dudziak both have agile voices that can mimic horn lines). Joni's version
of "Centerpiece" in her HOSL album is proof she can join the great ladies
of jazz with her syncopation and subtle improvisation. Her version, though
not an out-and-out vocalese like Lambert, Hendricks and Ross of the 1950s,
is just as blue chip. That's why I am looking for that TV special (?)
where she sang "What Is This Thing Called Love?" with Bjork because that
song brings out the swing in everyone.
By the way ....
Hi to all and its my second time to join the List. The first time was
early 1997 but my computer crashed and I lost everything including the
Joni, EBTG, Julia Fordham posts I used to receive. After 10 months of
figuring out what to subscribe and not to subscribe, I opted for Joni
again. Is Colin still here? Is Barbara Burst?

Sherrie,
I am so sorry to hear that you had such a rough time the concert. I have
to say that you held your composure very well; if that had been me, I
would have been either crying or screaming like hell. I do not think that
I ever cared for the fact that Joni was touring with Dylan. I think it is
quite obvious that the two share separate fan bases. I was happy that
Joni was touring, but it probably would have worked better if she'd gone
it solo, or at least with someone closer to her musical style (if there is
such an artist).
Your report surprised me because most of the other reviews of the DC show
were positive, especially with regards to the audience. I hope that the
sweet memories of Joni's beautiful voice will help to heal your wounds...
literally!

I for one am speachless by Joni's whirlwind appearances this year and am
wallowing in the afterglow, cigarette in hand...
I think we're also a little stunned by JZW's abrupt departure. Did
everyone forget it was her birthday or was she just tired of receiving the
increasing volume of email from JMDLers? (That's why I'm on digest.)
Whatever, I will deeply miss Julie's wonderful input and hope she'll be back
by January!
Last night I had a breakthrough singing along with TTT. Usually it takes
me about a week to find a harmony line to Joni's latest. Perhaps it was the
standard tuning on Harlem In Havana that threw me. But there I was typing
away when suddenly I was singing harmony to the title track. I wish I could
share what a joy it is to fall in sync with her melodies! Sweetbird and
Paprika Plains are the songs that finally taught me how to harmonize after I
had long given up trying. There is something so liberating about her chords,
lyrics and rhythms.

I sell books for a living and there's a very

There's a newer one by the same couple (of course,

who clashes with you, who will self-destruct with you

I was reading this article in the NYT Sunday Magazine

A: SEE BELOW
Darwin:

Chickens, over great periods of time, have been naturally

dispositioned to cross roads.
Freud:

The fact that you thought that the chicken crossed the road

Subject: Joni on L.A. Radio again!
After a few years of terrible drought, L.A. finally got a really good
alternative radio station about a month ago - just calls itself 103.1. I've
been listening to it during spare moments at work and they are playing ALL
our favorite music all the time.
This morning my Joni-convert Brad announced to me that they played both
Crazy Cries of Love and Taming the Tiger in one hour this morning! This is
so great for Joni - this particular station is the hottest thing in town
right now for discriminating music lovers who have been bereft of a decent
radio station for far too long!

NP: Hancock/Gershwin's World - Joni singing "The Man I Love"
(Oh...My...God) My first reaction, "This is JONI?!" What a revelation,
what a stunner of an album

It's a pleasure writing with you. The word is "splendiferous" actually. I
deconstructed it. ;-)

keep on your P's and Q's..."

That's funny, I thought "parthenon" was a clever
play on words, worthy of a Joni comment.
