She sounds eerily like a saxophone on the lower register (the late Betty Carter and Scandinavian jazz singer Urszula Dudziak both have agile voices that can mimic horn lines). Joni's version of "Centerpiece" in her HOSL album is proof she can join the great ladies of jazz with her syncopation and subtle improvisation. Her version, though not an out-and-out vocalese like Lambert, Hendricks and Ross of the 1950s, is just as blue chip. That's why I am looking for that TV special (?) where she sang "What Is This Thing Called Love?" with Bjork because that song brings out the swing in everyone. By the way .... Hi to all and its my second time to join the List. The first time was early 1997 but my computer crashed and I lost everything including the Joni, EBTG, Julia Fordham posts I used to receive. I was happy that Joni was touring, but it probably would have worked better if she'd gone it solo, or at least with someone closer to her musical style (if there is such an artist). Your report surprised me because most of the other reviews of the DC show were positive, especially with regards to the audience. Whatever, I will deeply miss Julie's wonderful input and hope she'll be back by January! Last night I had a breakthrough singing along with TTT. Usually it takes me about a week to find a harmony line to Joni's latest. Perhaps it was the standard tuning on Harlem In Havana that threw me. But there I was typing away when suddenly I was singing harmony to the title track. I wish I could share what a joy it is to fall in sync with her melodies! Please don't fall prey to the fallacy that *everyone* on the jmdl, all 500 or so of us, share all, or any, of the opinions expressed on a particular thread. We don't (do we?). Seems like too often lately everyone gets a verbal spanking for things one or two of our sisters or brothers have posted. Oh, I consider all here to be quite the individuals! Those I've met. But yay! to those who've met her. I know I would shit my pants, pardon my language. Just to sit near, meet her occasional glance and hear her voice would do it (the deification thing) but if I encountered her in a drunken brawl with her daughter, I would be just as happy. Maybe happier! I sell books for a living and there's a very popular astrology book called the Secret Language of Birthdays which gives you the rundown on YOUR birthday, your strengths, foibles, tendencies, whatnot. There's a newer one by the same couple (of course, a couple), Goldschneider ( I always want to say "Goldschlager"), which gives you the rundown on your relationships, who you love, who you hate, who clashes with you, who will self-destruct with you (good to know), The Secret Language of Relationships. I was reading this article in the NYT Sunday Magazine (If someone wants to know, I have the date around here somewhere) where she mentions this book and how she looked in it to see about her relationship with her daughter, and it said that they were not supposed to be compatible at all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
