Marsha McBabe, We just never know...Joni strikes me as a person who isn't locked into anything, including smartdom...and besides, my alternate vision tells me she enjoys bombarding her senses from time to time...I wouldn't be at all surprised if she dove down here for something shiny once in a very blue moon ;~D Susan L.A. aka Honey McBabe :~D ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 00:18:51 -0600 From: Evian Subject: meeting Joni > I have never tried to go out of my way to meet her. Most likely because I, > like you, would want a conversation that went beyond fan/star. > I actually had the chance to meet Joni a few years ago... well, not really to meet her, but to bump into her "unexpectedly". She came into the stationary store that my brother-in-law works in to buy painting supplies, which she did on a few occasions. That afternoon, my sister called me and said "Guess who is in Eagle's right now?" Being the dork I am, I had no clue and sat there thinking "ok, who is it that I would care about?", meaning that I was thinking about someone I hadn't seen for a long time. However, when she yelled "JM!" I could have fallen over. My sister said that her hubby had just called, and told me that I probably could have time to run down there. After giving it a few seconds of thought, I told her that it was really icy out (freezing rain and snow) and by the time I changed clothes and made my way down there, she would be gone. Actually though, I just didn't want to barge into the store and start babbling, since it would definitely look like some kind of set-up. So, I calmly... ok, not calmly.. called the store and said "IS SHE STILL THERE??" and I got an answer of "ummmm-hmmmmm", hang on a sec". When he got back on the phone, he told me he would be over in 10 mins with an autograph. I was of course exstatic, and thought that the next time she came in, I would somehow be prepared and just happen to stroll into the store. I still sometimes kick myself for not going down there. However, since this is a small town, and pretty much everyone I know met Don in the schools, etc, I just didn't want to make her uncomfortable, and look like some kind of stalker-type crazed fan. Also, since everyone and their dog around here seemed to have run into Joni that winter, I just assumed that I would run into her. Alas, I didn't. If I was lucky enough to run into Joni like so many of you have on the tour, you are darn tootin' I would have been in there like a dirty shirt! I am so excited and happy for all of you! However, in my situation, it just seemed too much like a "i-am-on-the-joni-trail" type of thing. I didn't want to run into the store and yell "I've come for conversation!" or something dopey that I would have done! So, my point is, and I really do have one, is that when you have an opportunity to meet your idol like everyone did on the tour, I think it would be foolish not to lean over in the bar and say "Thank you for everything you have given us" or politely walk over in the lobby and say "excuse me, but I have to tell you how much you have meant to me". But, converesly, in the situation that I had, it just seemed to be almost an invasion for me to do that because the last thing I would want is to make Joni feel uncomfortable and think that I had everyone I knew out on some Joni-sighting watch! Also, about the cake that Marsha has... I would do exactly the same thing!!! I have a wineglass my sister got her waiter friend to keep for me that Joni drank out of... and yes, it seems totally stupid for me to even have this glass, but really... what is the big deal? It makes for a good conversation piece, and it always brings to mind the hillarious antics that ensued the night my sister called me from Prince Albert when I was living in Saskatoon to tell me that Joni was eating dinner next to them in the resteraunt, and was staring at them intently all night. Moreover, I thought the "ABBA turd" in "Pricilla" was hillarious! Marsha, if you ever find yourself in Saskatchewan, bring the cake...I have a nice goblet we can wash a few crumbs down with! :) Happy Thursday, Evian ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Nov 1998 01:39:11 -0800 (PST) From: Bernadette Gallagher Subject: Re: Joni meets Georgia O'Keeffe Finally reading the story of Joni's attempts at meeting her *own* idol, O'Keeffe What a fabulous story! That one went right in my book, on paper, with ink. No chance of that little gem EVER getting lost. Thank you so much. I just got here, But I'd like to point out that all this meeting Joni stuff is circular psychobabble. I've really enjoyed meeting you all but I sometimes recoil when I think what Joni would think of this, people accusing other people of being jealous and other people admitting they're jealous and other people insisting that they're not jealous. Help! I'm trapped in Jesuit kinderrgarten!
