1943: Joni is born in Fort MacLeod, Canada
1982: The New York Times publishes a review of Wild Things Run Fast,
calling it "the most exhilaratingly high spirited album Miss Mitchell has
ever made. For in addition to the edgy, syncopated folk-jazz singing that
became her vocal trademark in the mid-70's, the album features several
vibrant rock-and-roll performances that communicate a rare joy in being
alive."

1994: Today's issue of Newsday gets in the Turbulent Indigo promotion act
and publishes a talk with Joni. Here's Joni take on Los Angeles: "Driving
in traffic is difficult, extreme. Your fellow civilians are hostile. The
shopping center is full of Russians who, like, try to beat you if you don't
watch your bill; they're all like black-market immigrants or something. The
restaurants that I eat in are close enough to Brentwood, but there's an
influx of, like, you know, sickly tourists wanting to know where the woman
shops and how to copy her. You're glad to get through the day without a
fire or a mudslide or a drive-by shooting. You jump in traffic when a car
backfires. Lovely place to live. Full of inspiration."

My vinyl collection goes thru CMIARS. In case you come across another
NRH LP i would be highly interested. Michael just informed me,
that TI was released on vinyl too. So that would be another item
to complete my LP collection.

I watched the CBC special on Sunday (9pm to 10 pm) and saw no
performances of Facelift or Crazy Cries. In fact, the only thing from
TTT was Tiger Bones played at the opening. As far as "three different
edits" is concerned, I saw no mention of any repeat performances of the
special in TV Guide. The 11 to 12 slot is prime news time for CBC.
However, please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thank god this concert will be available on video soon. This CBC edit
was extremely disappointing. I'll be posting a review on Wally's site
soon. By the way, the CBC edit (which Joni personally mixed up here in
Toronto) included a reaction closeup of the JM.COM maestro himself.

Juerg,
sorry to report TI was *not* released on vinyl. the last (New) Joni
Mitchell album released on vinyl was 'NIGHT RIDE HOME', and in very limited
quantities at that. there was a domestic (US) pressing as well as an
Import pressing from Germany.
both BLUE as well as COURT And SPARK are currently available in
Special Limited Edition 'Audiophile' Pressings.
both of these as well as the Vinyl NRH are sonically superior to the
CD versions.

Subject: CD's and seasons
On the topic of associating albums with seasons, I realized that I don't
really think that Hejira is a winter album... I consider it a fall album.
I think that the cover, obviously, lends itself to that colder season, but
I always associate the fall with change, and that is how I've always
viewed Hejira: as a great change for Joni and her music. Of course, if I
went along that line, all of her albums would be autumn albums!
Just a thought,

Hejira is a record for all seasons. I associate it with summer most
because that's usually when I'm driving across the burning desert witnessing
the clouds of Michaelangelo muscular with gods and sungolds...
Blue and Turbulent Indigo are the records I associate with winter.
TTT is definately Autumn... E.T.

You may associate Hejira with summer for this reason, but let me point out
that the desert is burning even in the winter, so I'd look for other clues

you are of course correct. perhaps i should have pointed that out.
however, the list is titled:

>JONI MITCHELL
>Misc. Recordings ~ Joni's appearances on Albums 'other' than her own.
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------
i didn't say she sang on all of these.
i also listed the times so no one would think these were major inclusions.
on several others it's difficult to even detect her presence but since
she's clearly credited, they are a part of her discography.
Interestingly enough ... Reprise Records as one time intended
to release a Live Album from this 'Carnegie Hall Concert'.

Subject: Joni & Bob at MSG 11/1/98
I just got on this list 10 minutes ago, so I've probably missed the gushfest over this show, but here's my mouthful anyhow. My apologies to everyone who finds this redundant.
I never thought that I'd have a chance to experience Joni live, and this was really a dream come true. Joni was fabulous, danced around in a suave and sultry way, lit up and smoked a cigarette on stage! (Way to go, Joni, I'll never quit smoking now!) My non-JMDL friends who'd hoped for me that she'd play Big Yellow Taxi wouldn't even have recognized it, her bluesey steel spin re-defined it. She was definitely in a Hejira mood, we all loved it. At first I was afraid that most of the audience were Bob-heads, but I was happily proved wrong. The band was fabulous. they launched right into Just like This train and then a moving Night Ride Home. She may have lost some high notes, but Joni's voice left nothing to be desired. Sitting all the way in the back of MSG, she sounded great to me. I was expecting mostly Taming the Tiger, but I think we only heard one or two (I don't have that yet, so I couldn't tell you.). Free Man In Paris wasn't really a surprize, but I was blown away by the inclusion of Don Juan's Reckless Daughter and Hejira, not to mention Black Crow and Amelia. She explained Magdalene Laundries to us, but I didn't catch what country she said they were prevalent in. Did anyone else catch that? She was beautiful BECAUSE she was so understated, and this, I think is the core of her talent. Sex kills was understated! She, of course, encored with Woodstock, so I will never again be jealous of the audience of the Shadows & Light concert, because she not only played it solo with her lonesome guitar, she reverted to the Ladies of the Canyon intonation of "garden" And then she thanked us. I have a confession to make here: She was so phenonmenal that we were bored when Bob came out and even left in the middle of Gotta Serve Somebody! Here's hoping we all have many more chances to experience Joni live. I know she hates it, but she performed with the utmost grace, and she must know how much her fans appreciate her coming out. And smoking.

Subject: Joni evangelism, french teachers and Edith Piaf
I'll try to shorten a long story:
I got an Edith Piaf record from the library only because Joni cites her
as an influence. (She's great, BTW)
My daughter mentioned to her French teacher that her mom's listening to
some French lady who rolls her R's when singing.
Teacher is a huge Piaf fan who sends home some great Edith stuff.
In thanks, I send back a note telling why I was interested in Piaf,
along with a tape of Joni's "Two Grey Rooms".
Bottom line, a new Joni fan is born! The teacher would like me to tape
some more Joni for her.
I originally gave her Two Grey Rooms because that was Joni's most
"Piaf-like" sound. Can anyone suggest what other songs I should tape?
(I have all of Joni's CD's except for Mingus, DJRD, and WTRF.)

It so happens that I saw Rufus in concert in a small club the other night.
(I just e-mailed Michael Y. about this privately.) Alas, while my respect
for his music increased, my respect for him as a person decreased
*drastically*. He was a total JERK! -- arriving late; complaining about the
sound from the monitors throughout; interrupting a song to berate the poor
sound technician girl (for supposedly talking), despite her very
professionally apologizing; slagging the club (he introduced that song with
the chorus "And you will believe in love/and all that it's supposed to
be..." by saying "I think this ought to become a monster hit, and then I
won't have to play crappy clubs like this anymore"); degenerating even
further into pettiness when the poor sound girl had to tell him he had only
five minutes left (sketchy, I know...). And more than a few other, more
subtle things that bothered me....
I'll just wait and hope that no one tries to draw the comparison between
this and Joni at Indianapolis before I take up bandwidth explaining why I
don't agree with it. ;)

This is so cool! (meeting Joni) Way to go you guys! I have been thinking
(and maybe I'm about to repeat myself) that last year when I first
joined the list, there was only a couple people who had actually met her
SIQUOMBness. I love reading these stories of JMDLers meeting Joni in the
bar; the lobby; backstage; the stage door. I sat here watching the Joni
special on CBC last night - after 2 friends phoned to tell me it was on
- - but it was just me sitting here. So, when I read these stories, I feel
like I'm sharing in the experience. I hop you don't mind the
infringement, but when you well up with tears of joy, so do I. Thanks
you guys, for sharing these times.
The way you described her hand on yours is classic JMDL.
(big sighs)

Thanx for putting Pittsburgh right in the middle of the inside, Wally! And
it was so great to see your smiling face behind Joni so many times during
the PPV special! Lucky dog...

Simon! Simon! Simon! You have solved the riddle of a lifetime for me. About
15 years ago I saw the Reprise LP that has My American Skirt on it. It was
at a record store that doesn't exist anymore. For some reason, the name of
this piece [which I thought WAS a song] stuck in my memory as My Little Red
Skirt. Ever since that day I'd been trying to find this mysterious Joni
song. I mean, even Wally didn't have it on his site, so you can all imagine:
I was beginning to think I'd been delusional all these years. And now it's
come to the light [with its right title]!
Fifty reincarnations have been lifted off my overburdened karma.

It isn't just the Advocate...People are complex and rarely fit into
categories of any kind for any reason ...but we want them to be simple
because we only make time for one-dimensional characters in this
"...scared hard-edged rat race..." So GODDAMNIT, we'll make them simple
even if we kill them doing it And unfortunately, we
frequently do...
When pet-theories become more precious than human life what does that
say about us?
"...Every bristling shaft of pride
Church or nation
Team or tribe
Every notion we subscribe to
Is just a borderline..."
You tell me: In ten thousand years will the sexual orientation of anyone
on and/or off this list matter?
How can you tell I'm wearing the TI T-shirt my pal Roberto so kindly
draped me with? Thanks sugar! ;~)

This is probably a personal chat that I haven't heard enough of, but I'll jump in here anyhow. I work in a bookstore and am always amazed at the stuff the Advocate (and other mags) puts on the cover. You won't find that on CAQ! I find it quite frankly offensive to even discuss the orientation of people who chose to be private about sex (Sex, for Christ's sake - what could be more private?). I have to deal with this crap all the time because I am experimantal. I abhor all the labels as just that, and the "Borderline" allusion is utterly apropos. "But- you're gay!" or "You're dating a man? Why?!" are things I hear a lot. I've even been asked about new people "Is he/she gay?" I don't ask people. To me it's not the same as "Where do you live?" or "When's your birthday?" I think it's pathetic when people identify with a label. The strident gay community isn't all alone in this, of course. If skin color wasn't so obvious, I think power-seekers of ethnic groups would ask people what race they are. I've even been yelled at at work (They're pretty liberal there, in case you missed that) for going to Mass. "Why did you go to Mass?!?!" As if I had just eaten a baby. I could have fired back, "Why'd you pierce you tongue?!" but instead I just smiled knowingly. The more people ignore the borderlines, the fewer divisions there will be (I'm an idealist). We're going global, so why all this insularity? I won't ask who you worship if you won't ask me which direction I wipe from.

Hi everyone,
Now that Joni's Taming The Tiger is in stores, her tour is over, and
the PPV special has aired, Joni says she needs a break. It's been a wild
and heavy six weeks, and we've been given us so much recently, so please
try to not be too disappointed at my news. Joni has canceled her upcoming
press and promotional appearances, including the Charlie Rose Show, VH-1
Storytellers, a David Letterman show, and a photo shoot with famed
photographer, Annie Liebowitz. This is a loss for us Joni-philes for
sure, but our favorite songwriter is exhausted and a bit sick from the
rigors of the recent tour and wants to go up into the Canadian backbush
and rest for a few weeks. It's possible that any or all of the
afore-mentioned programs could happen later in November, but signs are
that a calming period has begun.
Later,
Wally Breese
