Thanks so much for the great review of an obviously more-than-memorable
night on the town in L.A.!!
I've always appreciated Jimmy's songwriting and I'm one of those that
sees Brian Wilson as one of the very few true rock icons. To mingle with
both in one night - - - you must be thrilled!

Subject: The PPV
I just returned from our local SoCal PPV party at Steve Dulson's house,
attended by Ken Corral, Steve Jossum and Jill Tamada - all of who were in
the audience at the tapings. Steve was kind enough to order two showings so
that those of us stuck in Friday night traffic could see it all. Marsha also
phoned in from Atlanta where she was at a PPV party with our own John
"Hairfarmer" Lind!
I was more impressed viewing it now than when I was there both nights. I
think this had to do with my awestruck sense of surreality while I was
actually experiencing it then. Looking at it again with some objectivity, I
observed so much more how great Joni and the band were those nights.
The show consists mainly of clips from the second (Saturday) night of the
tapings, with Song For Sharon being a notable exception. We found ourselves
frequently breaking into spontaneous applause after several of her songs and
thought the whole production was really awesome.
One thing we all expressed was feeling a twinge that we could never relive
those nights again. Seeing it on tape is not enough - we wanted to be back
there in that room again! To me, it was almost a little melancholy to think
that we will probably never again have such a rare opportunity to experience
Joni like that. It's feels a little like waking up and finding the
beautiful coach has turned back into a pumpkin! (Oh, allow me a little
whimpering here, O.K.? ;-)
The jmdlers who are shown almost continuously through the tape are Wally,
Don Sloan (directly behind Joni) and Jill Tamada (frequently shown off to
Joni's left side). But there are also many shots of Steve Dulson (sitting
next to Jill) and Ken Corral (sitting next to Steve) and a stand out shot of
Steve Jossum. We saw Leslie and Steve Mixon and Mariana a couple of times,
along with Les, who was sitting with her. There was a shot of Pearl and
Wally in the beginning viewing the paintings and we saw at least one other
shot of Pearl. Almost impossible to spot, but verifiably spotted
nonetheless, were a couple quick shots of me and Phyliss!
We all thought it was fantastic but would have wished for a more uncut,
longer version which included more of the songs and the paintings.
What really came across in the tape was Joni's wonderful warmth, beauty and
fantastic personality which we were all just bowled over by in person.
Thanks again to everyone for such a nice party with wonderful food and wine
and sharing of Joni musings and memories. (You should see Steve's cache of
priceless Joni stuff - ahhhhh!)
Love,
Kakki

Just wanted to put in my two cents. I almost was late for work because I
got so caught up in the show. I was taping it but I had a hard time turning
the TV off.
Joni was so beautiful, strong, confident and relaxed and in such great
voice.
As usual, Joni has put together a fine band of musicians to accompany her
and I loved the "theatre in the round" set she designed.
This fall has started out with such a bang. The release of TTT, seeing Joni
at Madison Square Garden, The PPV, what's next?
Hey, wasn't that Graham Nash applauding at the end of the show?

Good Morning, or afternoon, or night, depending on whatever it is when you
catch this...
Since January, I've experienced such joy "sitting in this cafe" and sharing,
learning, discovering so much about Joni and so many other things. As I write,
I'm listening to Hejira, remembering the first time I heard it and realizing
that the world was so much larger than the Elton John/Doobie Brothers/Eagles
etc. world I had been allowed to see previously. This magical, mysterious,
mystical record, that I didn't have a clue about at 18 and am only beginning
to unlock now at 41.
In just a little while, I'm heading to Atlanta to see and hear the individual
who gave flight to this remarkable piece of work, easily the most complete
artistic vision of our time IMO. This feeling is so overwhelming just thinking
about it is causing my eyes to tear up and my hands to shake. And also, what a
feeling to share this with people who UNDERSTAND this emotion! Anyone else
would laugh hysterically!
So my wife & I will be travelling in some vehicle (her Saturn with TT#7 and
Lucinda Williams in tow), sitting in some cafe (Einstein's in Atlanta @ 4:30
with 15 or so JMDLer's), and preparing to see Joni, thanks to the links I made
through this group. WOW!
P.S. I'm a righty, but I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous...(I love that
line ;~D)

Well, my PPV started out bad......had wanted to
get my 4 year-old to bed but my husband suggested
he stay up to watch Joni. I agreed reluctantly as he
has so much energy and it was a really noisy day.
At the last minute, my little guy decided he would
be quite and sit with us on the couch .
Hubby couldn't get the recorder to work and was
banging it around. It got crazy.....I couldn't hear
the beginning because of the banging and then
my 4 year-old started crying. I started to get
really mad inside...but then the whole thing just struck
me as so funny I started laughing and then just
gave up and figured I'll just buy the video one day
(I HOPE). A half-hour later my husband realized
the video recorder WOULD NOT start. My little one
was quietly watching....and Joni was wonderful!
I have been listening to Song for Sharon alot lately
so really was pleasently surprized to hear that!
Also at this taping....I realized I now really like the
music to Sex Kills. Didn't like it before....but as
others on the list have said.....many of Joni's songs
have to grow on ya....but once they take root....I'm
hooked! Of course the live band surely helped....
great, great sound! Hubby did manage to get it on
the loud speakers...which I hate usually...but with
Joni on there it was awsome! Amazingly, little
Myles fell asleep on the couch....despite how booming Joni was
coming out of the speakers!
In regards to Joni's knitting story.......did I miss something?
I didn't get it.......can someone fill in my denseness, please?
I had fun spotting the few people I've seen in pics off the Joni
list. Marianne.......wasn't that you smiling and clapping like
crazy? And good-lookin' Wally right behind Joni? I wish you
could have been sitting right in front of her to see her expressions.
Well, the good part of the whole evening was I got to see Joni
twice.....because the show aired a second time, right after the first
one
and the cable company didn't pull the plug!!!! This time I heard
everything
as all was quite now in the house. I was overdosing on Joni and it was
wonderful!! What a great way to go to sleep........after hours of
Joni....
singing, dancing, painting, and lots of Joni smiles!!!
Of course I'll be checking my bill to see if they double-charged
me!!!

After not being able to attend either the Woodstock or MSG show, I was really
pumped for the show last night and I was not disappointed. It was everything
and more the listmembers who attended the show said it was in their glowing
reviews. Really loved it when she cut loose and danced during "Comes Love"
and "Trouble Man" blew me away. During the entire evening she really looked
like she was having a great time. The only damper on the evening was when I
ran the tape back of the show and my husband I and got nothing but snow.
Don't know what could have happened, we've never screwed up taping before.
The only thing I can think of is that my tape machine started a little before
the concert did and at the beginning of the show, during the producer's intro,
it flicked off for a mini second. At any rate, the video is definitely on my
Christmas list.

I've been mulling this over too. This morning I was trying to explain it to
my daughter, who fell asleep before the end. I think it has to do with what
this woman says at the end.. about the stars being beautiful. However, my
daughter pointed out to me that Joni is like some rare people that can
mesmerize you with their story tell and it doesn't matter if the story has
any meaning or not. It's the art of the telling.
However, if anyone does know the "point" Joni was trying to make, please
share.

The Washington Post reviewed TTT favorably, and I posted it a few weeks ago.
By contrast, the horrid pan was in the Washington City Paper. I read it the
day it came out, sitting at a sidewalk cafe, and nearly choked on my latte.
I just checked and the review isn't on the City Paper site. I'm afraid that
by now I've burned my copy while muttering appropriate incantations. I'm
also afraid that I forget which area JMDLer posted about the review so I
don't know whether that person still has a copy.
If it's any comfort, the review itself was not just "extremely negative"
(as you've described it) but also just plain *bad*...as in a total
indulgence on the part of the reviewer. In fact, just typing these words
about it makes me want to wash my hands.
At least the Post, DC's major paper, reviewed TTT favorably and appreciated
Joni's set at the concert. In fact, illustrating the review is a caricature
of Joni; it's on the first page of today's "Style" section. There's an
online copy of this; the drawing isn't very clear online, but for those
who'd like to check it out, here's the URL:
(The Joni pic is at the bottom right of the page. And I think this URL
won't work after today, because it's to the online image of today's edition
of the Post.)

I heard an interview with George Martin on CBC Radio1 a week or so ago.
When he was talking about getting the performers to do the album, he
stated, "of course Celine was easy". Naturally, he didn't mean it that
way, but I just recalled that in reading your post. Obviously they're
friends. They played "Come Together" performed by Robin Williams and
Bobby McFeron. Hearing Robin Williams sing anything is a weird concept,
but I kind of liked it.
And yes, I've been seeing the ads for the upcoming special. (I like
CBC.) I wonder if it's a shorter version of the PPV (which my cable
company will not be airing). From the ads; it looks like the same
circular stage, and she appears to be wearing the same attire (as seen
on Wally's Upcoming News page).
I'll be cosied up to my tv Sunday night. My one compliant about the CBC;
they don't broadcast in stereo. ("I'm a taxpayer and I demand that you
broadcast Joni in stereo!")

A while back, one of the cats knocked the mini stereo off the tv and
broke a couple CDs in the process. (The same adorable kitties who,
earlier in their lives, have managed to break - among other things - a
glass coffee table, and a cast iron fry pan.) Today I went to replace
Hejira. Walked into HMV, and staring me in the face was a big display of
that Alanis broad. The snot-nosed 6 year old in me wanted to push it
over after finding only a few Joni CDs, not one of them being Hejira. I
finally found it at the 6th(!) record store. I chastised the clerk for
having Joni in the "Folk"(!) section. His defence was that it wasn't his
decision. I just grumbled unintelligibly.
I was wishing I had only recently discovered Joni. About 4 of her CDs
were priced at $5.99! My jaw dropped (4 times)! That's really cheap when
you consider that a second hand store charges $10 for a used CD.
There was only one other customer in the store. He was looking through
the Dylan section. Probably at the concert, too. I would have been there
had Joni come along with Dylan. But, noooo... Dylan with Jann Arden.

Did any Canadian JMDLers or people with access to CBC think that the

What a wonderful evening!
There were 19 of us. A group of my friends from various lives. Some of
whom knew a little about Joni. Some none at all. While my guests
arrived we nibbled on a buffet of miscellaneous goodies, including my
future entry to the cookbook "People's Parties Cocktail (Turkey)Balls".
I spread all my Joni memorabilia on the dining room table and created an
"open book quiz" with an obsessive 29 questions of varying degrees of
difficulty. While people milled around the table trying to answer the
questions I would occasionally give hints and various tidbits of Joni
info. It was really fun. Claudia, a 63 year old woman who is a dear
friend and knows nothing of Joni was intent on winning. At one point I
asked her if she was learning more about Joni than she ever wanted to
know. She replied that she was "learning that she is a pretty amazing
woman". It warmed my heart! Another friend, Geoff, and his date
retreated to my computer, found the JMDL bookmarked and started using
the search feature!!! Go Les! Claudia won first place with 23 correct
answers and received a copy of TTT .Geoff won second with 20 and took
the Hejira CD. One of the more difficult and amusing questions that only
one person got, with generous hints was "Who is the black person on the
cover of DJRD?" Another question was "According to Joni, Happiness is
the best ________?" Needless to say there was a huge AHA during that
song in the concert.
At 8PM sharp everyone was seated in front of the big screen TV. They
wowed at the introduction. Lots of them commented on the incredible
set. All of them kept asking if I saw me in the audience. I never did,
but after Kakki's comment I'll have to look closer when I watch the
tape. If not, that's an ok price to pay for having such an awesome seat
directly in front of siquomb! Now get this. Every single one of them
were quiet and respectful during the whole thing! Many of them even
applauded enthusiastically after each song! I noticed They really liked
Black Crow and Sex Kills, the more upbeat songs. They went ape over
Facelift as well as Trouble Man and Comes Love. A few folks said they
didn't realize that they really did know some of her songs and that they
would have to pick up one of her CD's. (Where is that check anyway
Reprise? ;-). Geoff's date Cynthia was one of them. She is a Sarah
McLachlan fan and I had mentioned that Sarah loves Joni. One
interesting comment was "Her songs have so many words. How does she
remember them all?" I responded that sometimes she obviously does
forget but that I pretty much had all of them memorized myself! Ah yes,
you know you're a Joni addict when.....
All my guests thanked me profusely for the invite and said they
thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It couldn't have been better. Well,
unless some of you had been there of course.
Love and Joni to all...

Subject: Country Bumpkin goes to the Big City to see JMDLers!!! (Oh, and Joni, too!)
Right-handed Ashara checking in (finally!) after the New York show. First of
all, to all those I owe personal e-mails; please be patient, kind, and
understanding. I have son #3's Bar Mitzvah 2 weeks from today, and I am going
crazy!!! I am about a week or so behind in Joni mail also, so even though I
try to pick a few mesages to read here and there, I am basically clueless.
So......I flew into the Big Apple on Saturday to have some extra time to take
in some of the sites, and meet friends from the list. Wonderful, gratious,
attentive Kenny-turned-tour-guide met me at the airport, as I was a bit
daunted being in the city alone. We had an incredible day, and were joined for
dinner by fellow listers Kay Ashley, Patrick, and Kay's friend Stacy. We also
ran into the Chili crowd who were eating at the same place.
Sunday brunch at Duane's was wonderful! It was very comfortable, the food was
delicious, and it was so great to be able to put faces to many names I have
only seen on the little box in my office. I tried to keep my anxiousness in
check. You see, Maggie (aka Cordial Culinary Queen) was in charge of our
tickets, and I didn't actually have a ticket in my hand. She has some
"connections", and was able to get us on "Joni's list" for tickets, however,
she was the only one that could physically pick them up from the MSG box
office. Which in theory, was fine. The only "glitch" was that Maggie had to
work in BOSTON until 4PM THE DAY OF THE SHOW!!!!!
As it turned out, she got there on time, we connected, and I was in total Joni
Heaven for the rest of the evening. In the few list reviews I did read, it
seems that people have covered what she was wearing, set list, impressions and
such, so I will just go into a few personal impressions as to what it meant
for me.
From the first set list post of this tour, I was in "craze mode", thinking I
might hear DJRD again, live. You see, one of the 3 times I have seen Joni live
was in Syracuse in 1977? (can anyone verify when this concert was?) At that
concert, I heard 3 new songs that I hadn't heard before. One of them was DJRD,
and I fell madly, completely, and totally in love with it. So, when she played
it in New York, it brought back that entire time for me. (Just call me retro-
woman!) It was SUCH a gift to me!
The other thing that hit me really hard (and unexpectedly, I might add) is
that I burst into tears when she played Night Ride Home. The beauty of that
song, and the depth of the looks between Larry and Joni during it, were just
overwhelming to me. Having twice gone through the pain and heartache of
divorce, I just couldn't help but feel what incredible people these two were,
to retain such a deep, loving friendship, after going through a breakup. I
felt so very fortunate to be there with a fellow lister, who could really
understand, and "be" there with me.
All in all, it was a weekend that I am not likely to forget for a long time to
come!
Hugs,
Ashara

Hi Ashara,
So great to see you and then Maggie too! Duane's was like your get together.
FANTASTIC & ANGELS! How was that hotel BTW?
I am now convinced that JONI live and Joni recorded are like Vincent's
paintings and Vincent's Prints. Very little in common.
Mrs. Chili and I are thinking of having a get together here at Garden House.
It's a pretty cool place but who knows? It may be not until New Year's the
year 2000. Is anyone interested? I know a little early, otherwise we're going
to Hawaii.
The Pay Per View was beautiful. We will be happy to lend our copy to you but
you gotta pay shipping both ways. Sorry, but saving my warchest for more
surgery. Kakki, I may have to come out to LA for this. Back op #4. But I am
thinking this is the last resort. No pity needed, just send some good vibes if
you care to.
So glad to hear about Amy, Terry, Robbert, and my musical mom Marian's
Excellent Adventure with the Joni.

I'm wearing my Turbulent Indigo T-shirt [courtesy Roberto] for the first
time today! [though it's still a little chilly down here.]
Tonight I'm hosting a little dinner party for bunch of local Joni freaks.
We'll have "carbonada", a kind of meat and peach stew that's very
traditional in these lands [it sounds kind of repulsive but it's really
great!]
I'm also celebrating Welsh soprano Gwyneth Jones' birthday today. I hope
that neither Joni nor Gwyneth will put a Scorpion curse on me for making
them share their birthday celebrations.
HAPPY JONI DAY TO EVERYBODY!!!!!!

In an ironic turn of events, I celebrated Joni's birthday by having
my cat Emma put to sleep. She had been going downhill, and today the
vet said she was going into kidney failure.
The house seems so empty. Ron saw my purse on the sofa, and thought
it was Emma, and started to cry. You think you're prepared for stuff
like this, but you're not. And you think that losing a sister would
put losing a pet in perspective, but it doesn't.
Good-bye little sweetie.

Deb,
losing a beloved pet is always painful. they give us so much
unconditionally. You showed your love for her by letting her go. I
believe this love will allow her to continue on and she will wait for
you. She may even let you know she is around. Thankyou for taking such
good care of her.

hello,
Once again I have found a seller with a used Joni CD. This time it's
'Blue'. I'm looking for the HDCD, as I already have the normal one. The
seller can't see any HDCD logos on it, but says it was bought only a
month ago and it had an orange sticker on it then. Would that be an
indication that it's the HDCD version? Was it the "Blue" HDCD that
didn't have any logos on it (except on the sticker) to indicate that
it's the HDCD?

Subject: Joni Today!
Hi everyone!
I met Joni today after her sound check,
and like with all others, she was gracious
and kind and friendly. I was able to wish
her a happy birthday and give her an artsy
photo holder with pics I have taken of her
and her friends and colleagues, and me and
her friends over time...
She looks and sounds great, no residual
of illness.
More on the concert later...
Love,
Marsha, puttin' on the Ritz with the southern
contingent of the jmdl
PS--Joni did BOTH SIDES NOW as a second encore
song. Larry brought out a BD cake and we all
sang the BD song to her, she blew out the
candles, and all our wishes will come true!!!!

What can I say about Joni's final show of this
tour that has not been said?
Much!
Virtually sold out, as tickets were not offered
at the box office when the gates opened...
Set list: pay attention, it's different tonight!
Big Yellow Taxi
Just Like This Train
Night Ride Home
Free Man in Paris
Harry's House
Black Crow
Amelia
Hejira
Song for Sharon "Bell"
Happiness is the Best Face Lift
Sex Kills
Magdelene Laundies
Trouble Man
Comes Love
Woodstock
Both Sides Now!!!!
Final bows, Joni collects about 10 bouquets
of flowers up front, Larry brings out cake,
we all sing and cry.
Ok, I'll do the same thing all you regionals
have done, and say the Atlanta audience was
by far the most appreciative, polite, (with
the exception of one "rude idiot"), and
Attentive compared to others I have seen
(5 other shows, including Chicago 2 weeks ago).
The reason most likely for this was no alcohol
served on this college campus. Joni did chide
a guy who, was thrown out eventually for his
yelling out "shut up!" to her during her
explanation of the Magdalene Laundries. She
then asked him again "What did you say?", and
then "To each his own...I'm just as good as
Bob...and you're an idiot...and a rude idiot!"
Go Joni!
She held her composure for all songs thereafter,
as we held our breaths, and she was delighted at
the audience's appreciative applause and whistles,
and bouquets, and said she was getting "perverse
pleasure" in doing "one more" song, which was
Both Sides Now, and we loved it!!! It was melancholy,
she stood without guitar, but accompanied by the
band. It was in a lower key, pensive, slowed,
and reflective, and how she says it should have
always been sung....
God, what a special encore, hearing Joni on her
55th Birthday night sing Both Sides Now to us,
looking back on a life she has shown to be
uncompromising, honest, and full of "truth
and beauty".
I'll let others give more details about
what she said in between songs, (she was
chatty).
Down to celebrate more with/for our Birthday Girl!!!

Subject: Washington Gratitude (NJC)
I would like to take a moment to personally thank everyone in Washington for
their gracious hospitality and good will. Specifically:
Michael Yarborough, for whom it would not have been at all possible. For
being a persistant logistics coordinator, astute friend, and for proving that
wearing a blue pinstriped suit to a Joni concert validates her as a jazz
singer. He's a handsome orchid in a sunny window. Please, if you will, thank
Sean for his brilliant sense of humor.
Barbara Burst, for whom The National Gallery's exhibit of VanGogh and the
Phillips collection of winterscapes would not have happened. Calming,
inspirational and nurturing (or were you just tired?). Thank you for your
generous invitation, being my "answer" woman (Jeez, as if you don't enough of
that at work), and well thought of friend.
Sherrie Goode, for all of your genuinely warm hospitality. Exposing me to the
faux zebra fur coordinated lamp and lampshade, a real first for me! I'm with
you...loved the entire evening, especially your girlfriend (so sweet). Thank
you both.
Bill Dollinger, for your kindness, sincerity and bringing the Ross stuff
along. For educating me to Ross (totally into that Hong Kong number),
navigating the city and welcoming me into your new home. Nothing but good
luck and happiness for you Bill. Now put your heart back in your chest, the
ride is over!
Jerry Notaro for the best damn vegetarian chili I've EVER had the pleasure of
inhaling.
Robert qp Hanna for direction (are you kidding?), for tolerating my snobbish
and arrogant behavior, inviting me to Jr.'s., and for being a friend in
spirit..... In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit that is!
To all of you, and anyone I've inadvertently been remiss in leaving out, much
peace and thanks.
Duane
Happy to be sleeping in his own bed.

Subject: Our audience with SIQUOMB
"If you want me, I'll be in the bar".
And that's where we met and wished
Joni Mitchell a VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
At the Ritz here we gathered briefly in
my room, collected ourselves and thoughts
about the wonderful concert we had just
seen in Atlanta, and moseyed on downstairs
with the hope that the "swinging hotspot"
would be in our neck of the woods.
We were not disappointed.
On the elevator ride down was Greg L,
Joni's pedal steel player. We complimented
him, discussed the parts he played that
moved us the most, and he was very pleased
that we were that attentive to Black Crow,
Amelia, and Both Sides Now...he said BSN was
decided upon at the sound check and the
band was sweating it tonight, as it the song was
rather impromptu, but Joni wanted to do it.
How glad we are she did!
We offered to buy him a drink, and he said
he was meeting "others in the band", but
might take us up on it. AAAAaaahhhh.
The hotel band was loud, the ballroom folks had
just let out of their parties and were
all over the place here that holds about
300 with sectioned areas.
Greg joined Larry Klein and Chris Botti,
seated on a couch with chairs and a
coffee table in one of the more intimate
rooms. We eventually got our table there,
and knew we had to wait and
hope Joni would eventually come down.
She did in about 30 minutes. We
appropriately kept our distance, did
not approach, as we watched them order
champagne. A couple celebrating their
year anniversary seated next table over
offered us their cake, so we vicariously
enjoyed wedding/Joni birthday cake as
we watched Joni get toasted and quietly
raised our glasses to her too.
I had a bottle of champagne sent over to
Joni and her group. She turned and motioned
a thanks, and I approached her group, did
a congratulatory wish and compliment to
the show, and was then caught in the tractor
beam of her gaze as she made the connection
to the mutual friend we have and expressed
her surprise at how many shows I have attended
of hers since May.
Paul Ivice then joined us, Bob M came over,
then John Lind, and Pearl surrounded Joni
as she thanked us for coming to the show,
and said she had not sung "Both Sides Now"
in 30 years...(this is incredible to me...)
but JONI MITCHELL NEVER LIES.
We listened rapt as she talked about going
to hear Mabel Mercer do a show in Manhattan
(not sure when it was), and Mable did BSN.
Joni said she told Mabel it was wonderful
to hear it done by an "older person" at which
Mable got offended. Joni laughed as she
described Mabel's affect and large presence,
and how she bristled at Joni calling her old.
I think just about each of us got a word of
thanks to her. Paul and others will share
their conversations I hope, and I'll just
close by saying that when we get our
photos developed that she allowed us to
take with her, we will share them with you.
She signed my vinyl Hejira and Song to a
Seagull.
I am so happy for me and all jmdl'ers
who have had the privilege to connect
in person with Joni.
I am in love shock right now and will
post more later.
SIQUOMB, isn't she?

I don't know if anyone has already put this out there,
but every time Joni sings "Freddie says that Juan thinks...."
I think,
"Kilauren says that Marlin thinks that I think (that man's) the devil...."
This lyric sounds to me like something a young child might say after listening
to the grown-ups around him.... "Does Grandma Joni think that man's the
devil?"
A great lead in to "What a lofty title for such a petty little man.."
I'm falling more in love with the album with every listen.
