Don't forget Carol King's Tapestry! I have a separate magazine for our CD
player with nothing but Joni ( 6 hours worth at a time! )
....When you make your daughter buy Amy Grant for Big Yellow Taxi. Or
Heart for their rendition of River...and reading the cover to find out what
they say about Joni.

only 21. I didn't mean to ignore his talent... But God, he played on Court

thanks to don and phyllis and pj and kakki. good suggestions all! i
especially liked the one of the sire of sorrow, which i would not have thought
of. i am also, i think, going to include slouching towards bethlehem, as the
poet in her might find it interesting (either that, or a travesty!) and refuge
of the roads (just because it is my favorite).
and i agree with your suggestion don about keeping them chronological. i was
planning on doing that. (and yes, DED is WAY too advanced for marieve!!!
this is strictly JONI 101 -)
as far as your question regarding what kinds of classical music, kakki? i am
not sure. altho i believe it is almost exclusively operas, in which she is as
fluent as all of us are in jonispeak. i doubt if there is an opera she does
not know by heart.
keep em coming, if you think of any others. this should be an interesting
experiment simply because this will be marieve's absolute first exposure to
popular music.
start with the best...
(if this doesn't go over, i am going to park in her driveway and play jungle
line at top volume until she begs for mercy!!!) thanks again! love ric

Joni's so out-of-keeping from most poular music that came before her, that
I don't think it matters a bit that Marieve hasn't been brought up in that
tradition.
As a poet, I would assume she would appreciate the deep'n'meaningful side
of Joni... Refuge of the Roads, Hejira, Down To You, Lesson in Survival/Let
The Wind Carry Me, Chinese Cafe, Don Juan's Reckless Daughter would be some
of my choices.

There're a few well-known guitarists who play this way: Bobby Womack is
one; Albert King was another; and when I saw Karl Wallinger of World Party
play this summer, it looked like he was doing it too. I always wondered how
they learned, I mean did they have to turn their "Guitar Chord
Encyclopaedia" upside down?

Though I love "Blue," I would think "Urge for Going" would be the more
appropriate song for this mood. That's what I play this time of year,
especially tonight, which will be our first chilly night here in North

howard, i appreciate the point, but do you really think this is the kind of
forum to get into drawing random samples? surely, if everyone responded,
then this method would be far superior than any sample. for what it's
worth, me thinks your post has injected a counterveiling bias. to wit, it
seems to have precipitated a string of righties coming forward without
another lefty since. does this mean that these competing biases will
compensate for one another, and in the end we can make use of the numbers?

I thought 'The Dawntreader' was an excellent choice. Also:
Song to a Seagull
I Don't Know Where I Stand
Chelsea Morning
The Gallery
Morning Morgantown
The Blue Boy
Real Good For Free (love the piano on this one)
All I Want
Blue (again love the piano)
Banquet (other fine suggestions from FTR)
Down to You (I've always thought the instrumental interlude sounded
very classical)
People's Parties/Same Situation
Sweet Bird
Shades of Scarlet Conquering
(people have already suggested good songs from Hejira)
Jericho
Dreamland (give it a little global flavor)
The Wolf That Lives in Lindsey (a tad on the avant garde side
but impressive imo)
Love
My Secret Place
The Tea Leaf Prophecy
Night Ride Home
Two Grey Rooms
Sire of Sorrow (seconding that emotion!)
Love Puts on a New Face
Stay in Touch
That's my short list!

Subject: I can die now...
At some point after my love for Joni's music congealed, a fear began
to seize me that I would not ever get the chance to hear her live before
she retired, or worse. I just grew up too late, I thought. Thank the
Goddess I was wrong.
I have been convinced for a while that we are now seeing Joni learn to
use her voice with the aplomb she has long employed as a wordsmith
and composer. I now know I'm right. Even though she felt under the
weather and lacked some of the vocal elasticity I've heard from the
Day in the Garden performance, it was clear that she has learned
how and when to deploy her unique shapings. The gentle sorrows of
"Amelia," the percussive exclamations of "Black Crow," and the
anguished melismas of "Magdalene Laundries" all shrank the
basketball arena to a confessional booth. Of course my 9th row seats
didn't hurt. :-) The real stunners, of course, were "Trouble Man" and
"Comes Love," when she was freed from the obligation of telling a
story she created and reinvigorated someone else's tale with her own
stylings. I think her rediscovery and performance of these jazz and
R&B standards are direct roots of the vocal renaissance we are now
enjoying.
Unfortunately, we were deprived of "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter,"
"Moon at the Window," "Free Man in Paris," and "Facelift," perhaps
due to her illness. Nonetheless it was a memorable and worthwhile
evening, for Chris Botti's unmuted trumpet sighs in "Magdalene,"
for Greg Liesz's tight steel slurs in "Amelia," and for Brian Blade's
everything.
Bob Dylan was great as well. His singing did not bother me at all,
and his band was incredible. I must thank a lot of people on this list,
especially Brad Fors, for increasing my appreciation of his music.
I do have to say though that Dylan's skills as a lyricist and
bandleader dwarf his overwhelmingly unfortunate guitar solos. Those
should have been left to his guitarist, who is a fine player. I'm also
not crazy about most Dylan fans. They were respectful enough
during Joni's set, unlike previous shows, but I found their habit of
cheering every time Dylan sang a given song's title as a lyric more
than a little perplexing. "Don't think twice now / It's alright." "Woo-
hoo!!!." Um, OK.
They also wildly applauded every single one of his guitar solos. They
must have loved that root note he hangs onto as much as he did.
But I'm being too mean now. His one harmonica solo was excellent
and it was a generally energetic and tight show I'm glad to have seen.
Now I'm looking forward to more revelry with BarBearUh, Patrick,
Bob H., Bill, Julie, Alan, Sherrie, Duane and clan over the next two
days!!

Subject: (SJC) Jonatha Brooke in concert in Atlanta (long)
Jonatha Brooke (formerly of The Story) just
performed a solo acoustic set at Smith's
Olde Bar in Atlanta, and we were fortunate
to hear 15 beautiful songs. I am blown away
by this woman every time I see her (3 since
last November).
For me, I think she is one of the finest talenta
out there for intelligent lyrics, accomplished
playing (with alternate tunings and chord/
rhythm shifts that match SIQUOMB's, as well
as a controlled and gorgeous voice.
News from her label/marketing front: she was
dropped by MCA and is doing the independent
thing like Ani DiFranco and Jane Siberry. I met her,
and she said she might call Ani to get info on
pitfalls, etc. This further example of a
female artist being mistreated by a major
label sickens me for Jonatha, as I think
she is a monumental talent.
In 3 weeks her new "Jonatha Live" will be
offered by her website and at:
1-877-FOR-BAD-DOG
This is going on my gift list to distribute
to friends for Christmas.
Jonatha was gracious to pose for pics and
sign autographs. I gave her some photos of her
I took in Los Angeles and Atlanta.
When I mentioned our Fred Simon (Hi, Fred!),
and how I knew he introduced Jonatha to Ingrid
Graudins, her accompanist, she smiled and said,
"Yes, and Fred never lets me forget it!"
I adore Jonatha. Those of you unfamiliar with
her might recognize the breathy "GoodYear...
GooohoodYear" tire ditty she does nationally.
I fear she will be relegated to the Joni Mitchell
Shrine of Our Ladies of the Under-rated/Under-
appreciated Church of the CD Discount Bin. Amen.
Well, it was a nice beginning to a fab Joni
weekend here in Hotlanta. I look forward
to the PPV tomorrow night, and then Joni
on Saturday.
Your Mouth O' the South signing off,
Marsha

Just a little correction: Cat Stevens became a Muslim, not a Buddhist.
For tempestuousness, my grandfather was a stage hand on TV sets at one
time. He loved to talk about Jackie Gleason as the worst human being who
ever drew breath.
