Hello all,
Well I'm now a married woman! Had to u.nsubscribe for a few weeks during the
pre-wedding mayhem, but real glad to be back. I missed everyone! Anyhoo, I
have the Dish network at home and although we do have Pay Per View, there
has been no word on the Joni concert. Has anyone else investigated whether
the concert will be offered on Dish? If this topic has already been
covered, please forgive me. Since my honeymoon got squashed by that brute
Mitch (we were going to Cancun) I'll be in town hopefully for the concert
broadcast!

Ok, here's my thing on r/b versus jazz...
R and B, or to get rid of the euphemism, the blues, deals with
worldly, guttural things, namely passion in all its forms. I have
thought jazz to be a more esoteric genre, but still dealing with the
same themes. I am a huge fan of both since they serve different needs at
different times.
As for the Bonnie Raitt thing, I love her as much as I do Joni.
Raitt is way earthy whereas Joni's a bit more poetic, but they both go
straight to the heart of the matter. I have quite a few albums: her
excellent collection of her 70's output, Nick of Time, and Road Tested.
I just got Fundamental today in the mail, so far I like. I would give up
my first born child if Bonnie would do some Torch songs (I sometimes I
feel I am the only die hard Carly Simon fan of my generation, just for
the record. Simon's version of I get along without you very well has
only been surpassed by the amazing Dr. Nina Simone.). Bonnie would tear
into the heart of those great songs.
Maybe it would be easier to put it like this--I go for Joni for
insight, but I run for Bonnie for solace; that bluesy voice has
definitely been around all manner of blocks.
Best,
Russ

Hmmm.......I have a couple of problems with that, Daniel. How do you
KNOW all the semi-fans think the same? And should Joni be performing
with the fans, semi-fans or general public in mind? Or should she be
performing the songs the way she relates to them now?
Just wondering. All the best!

Sue, I really enjoyed your review of the Rochester concert! That was the
one I would have gone to; unfortunately I couldn't because I'm away at
college and I am in the midst of a heavy exam week. It sounds like Joni
was at the peak of her form, despite being a little sick. I have to admit
I wished that she had yelled at the rude audience memebers a little more
(they deserve it), but I am happy to hear that she wasn't really
distracted by it. And the "innocence renewed" thing at the end? Oh my
god! I am so sad that I couldn't go.
Thanks for posting the set list too. I have a friend back home who did
get to go because her parents are big Joni and Bob fans. She herself is
not a hard-core Joni addict, so she probably didn't know the names of all
of the songs. I will let her know.

>Do some do a better job with stereo sound than others?
Jerry Notaro replied:

Excellent tapes, but neither brand is easily
available in my area, except by special order,
or at special stores.
Most of the local consumer outlets in my area
limit their brands to TDK/MAXELL/SONY/FUJI...
and even within those brands, these stores do
not often carry top-of-the-line formulations
for those brands.
Therefore, I usually choose from the following:
1. TDK EHG (or MAXELL HGX-GOLD) as the *minimum*
2. TDK EKG HIFI (or MAXELL XL-HIFI) if available
3. TDK HD-X PRO (for excellent archival storage)
And as Howard Motyl suggests:
>A lot of what is important in recording is the device
>doing the recording, too, not just the tape.
I agree - a clean well-maintained machine can
do wonders, even on poor tape. Also, be sure
to tape at the highest possible speed (SP) for
best image and sound.

This is somewhat off-topic (As I usually am), but my brother brought up the
good point about people listen to a musician or band when they first

they lose popularity. I'm not talking about Joni in specific, BTW.

though i've always loved djrd, i don't often play it. however, the other
day we were returning from the city to our country home as the sun was
setting. i had an old home-made tape of several different artists in the
deck. as we approached a long bridge spanning a deep gorge, paprika plains
quite unexpectedly emerged. almost immediately, we were treated to the
sight of a tremendous flock/cloud of crows -- literally hundreds, and
hundreds -- swirling up over the bridge and heading into the sunset.
neither of us ever recalled seeing such a large concentration of crows
before. seemed almost as if it was the influence of letting this
soul-stirring music out of its box to play.

i picked up the december 'musician' magazine, with the joni interview, and
just finished it. some old woes, some way cool discussions of nuts and
bolts. here's an instantiation of the 'have we come too close?' question,
i've already read the online outtakes several times (and it's good stuff:
in-depth discussions of the cliches that have caused such a wide range of
opinions on ttt, among other gems) so the mag interview read a little
strange, for me, some overlap. the print article has a real fluffer of an
intro, but some great, satisfyingly detailed answers to some good
questions.
there's been a lot of 'gee, joni is brilliant but doesn't she like anyone
of the current crop?' on list lately. it's certainly an issue for us music
maniacs, who know that there are definitely newer artists that are making
music that can stand with joni's best. and artists closer to joni's time
who are making fresher, and sometimes far better work. still, it doesn't
seem likely that she'll ever say, 'hey i was wrong, music is better now
than it ever has been', but she did squeeze out a tenth of a compliment in
the magazine.
the discussion was herd mentality, everything being manipulated by hip.
'i met a dj from a small town in the east who confessed to me that he loved
my music, but somebody had caught him playing me during one of my unhip
periods. they said, 'you're still listening to that old stuff?' and he
replied by yanking my cd out! he had been manipulated by hip. it's just
like i hear djs saying now, 'i know we're supposed to hate sheryl crow, but
i love this record.'

'The Maltese Falcon' started out as a detective novel by Dashiell
Hammett. It was filmed by Hollywood about 3 times but the most famous
adaptation came out in the 40's and starred Humphrey Bogart as Sam
Spade, the hard-boiled detective who agrees to help a beautiful
compulsive liar by the name of Brigid O'Shaughnessy, played by Mary
Astor. Brigid is being pursued by a a group of thugs played by Warner
Bros. prime stock players Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre & Elisha Cook,
Jr. This group of ne'er-do-wells is trying to get posession of a black
statuette of a falcon, supposedly made by the Knights of Malta. They
believe that under it's black lacquer finish is a golden Falcon,
encrusted with jewels, worth a fortune. Well to sum up, Spade (Bogie)
ends up handing Brigid (Mary Astor) over to the police in the end
because she shot & killed his partner. As the police are leaving one of
them asks Spade what the black bird is. Spade replies: 'The stuff that
dreams are made of.'
More than any of you really wanted I'm sure.

I bought this title in the latest incarnation with HDCD processing. To
me, it is free of the "bell jar" sound that marred my enjoyment of the
LP version. I think that Reprise did a nice job on this title. If you
heard Nathan La Franier on a tape tree, here's a chance to get a studio
version.

Dr. Sigmond et al,
Last night I drempt that several UFOs were flying past my window. When
the stream subsided, it was suddenly daylight. I was in a rush to
attend a wedding on a bicycle but the bicycle was missing its front
wheel. I was holding the bike by its frame and *walking* it to the
wedding.
The dream itself didn't have any JC (Joni content) but I did put some
Joni on when I got to work. What does the dream mean?
Just wondering,

For our bumpersticjer, maybe we should consider the phrase that Joni
noticed at "A Day In the Garden". If I remember correctly it said,
"Joni's Jazz." I think it was an article that quoted Joni as saying
that the banner was "encouraging" because she felt that she was
understood, rather than being labeled a folk singer again and again.

If it was me, and I had to think of simple questions for my friends to
answer, I'd ask them questions where every answer was "Joni Mitchell".
But, still in an informative way. ie: Who wrote Woodstock/This Flight
Tonight? (One of my friends just discovered that Joni wrote Woodstock.)
or: Name 5 (10, whatever) Joni song/album titles. Recite lyric snipets
and have them name the song, or fill in the blank. Have them sing a
popular Joni Mitchell tune. (Whoever sings the most of a song without
stumbling on the lyrics, wins.) Have them pick out Joni from a photo
line up. (Put her with the likes of Rickie Lee Jones, etc) If you want
to throw them a curve, ask them which musical artist HASN'T been
influenced by Joni Mitchell. Here's a good one (might make their eyes
pop): How many times has Both Sides Now been recorded by other artists?
("over 300 times" as listed on Wally's page) Whoever guesses closest
wins. There, I'm officially out of ideas.

I love Go Insane, but the more I think about it, "Tango in the
Night", the Mac album from '87, was, I thought, beautifully produced...
In particular, I am thinking about the tracks "Caroline" and to a lesser
extent, the title track. And, although I am probably a minority, I
actually enjoyed Lindsey's work on Tusk, especially "I know I'm not
wrong". I think it would be very interesting to see Buckingham and Joni
work together.Cheers,

i usually use maxell gold T-120s, which i find to be a good reliable workhorse
of a tape. don't use 180s. you may find a tape that says it's particularly
good for music - you will generally get what you pay for. don't buy tapes at
the supermarket or hardware store - those are always low grade tapes. be sure
to tape on SP, not LP or ELP - that's really the most important thing. then
store it well - not someplace particularly dry or damp. don't leave it in the
heat, especially in the car.

No, but it probably has been brought up somewhere along the list and I'm
glad you brought it up anyway. I heard Blue the week it came out in the
summer of '71 and this was immediately one of my favorite songs. It was so
unlike Joni, somehow, being a bit of a ditty and so upbeat. I loved it as a
balance to her other songs on the album. Yeah yeah, I know, All I Want and
a few of the others were upbeat, too, but this was the dittiest and it was
so well done. In it's own way, I think it is one of her best crazy in love
songs.
"I'm drinking sweet champagne, got the headphones up high, can't numb you
out, can't drum you out of my mind"
and I love the part "they're singing goodbye, baby, baby goodbye, "ooo ooo
love is blind" in that crackly radio tone.
It is the "fun" song on that album like what "Twisted" is on Court and
Spark, what "Empty, Try Another" is on DED, what "Ray's Dad's Cadillac" is
on NRH, and what "Lead Balloon" is on TTT.

Some may fear and be disappointed that Joni has evolved into a bit of a
crusty curmudgeon, but actually her current stance is not too different from
the stance she has always taken regarding the the drive toward "hip" and
herd mentality:
"People hurry by so quickly, don't they hear the melodies" 1968
"Nobody stopped to hear him, though he played so sweet and high, they knew
he had never been on their T.V., so they passed his music by" 1970
"All this talk about holiness now, it must be the start of the latest style,
is it all books and words, or do you really feel it? Do you really laugh,
do you really care, do you really smile, when you smile? You criticize and
you flatter, you imitate the best and the rest you memorize" 1972
"Fiction of the image and the image makers...fiction of the buy me, watch
me, listen to me...fiction of the innovator and the stylist...which way to
go? Some follow blind and never know" 1985
"Will they shower you with flowers, or will they shun you when your race is
run?" 1988
Same old Joni, but maybe not so hip now to keep saying it?!
