I think she is very attractive-beautoiful with a characterful face(not a doll look alike) and she is a great actress. I would probably enjoy her company from what i have seen in interviews-not much bullshit about her, me thinks. You know it is amazing, I ask questions about people othet than Joni and I get loads of response. I am still waiting for answers to the questions I asked regarding a couple of Joni videos I saw! bw Colin ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Oct 1998 23:10:17 -0500 From: "M & C Urbanski" Subject: Toronto concert Hi everybody, I just got back from Toronto. What a concert!!! She was dressed beautifully, her hair was curled oh God!, And she performed that concert for Kilauren and the Canadian fans! She did a verse of BYT in Dylan voice & at the end did J. Jackson's "now why you want to go & do that ah huh". Flowers, flowers, flowers! She thank the crowd at the end for being gracious. Her rendition of "Comes love" knocked my socks off!! The whole (JONI) concert was an orgasm to the ears!! I wanted to hunt her down too, but figured she was spending time with "Killer". By the way, DO NOT TELL THE BORDER GUARDS YOUR GOING TO SEE JONI & BOB IN CONCERT! They pulled out the DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!! HA!! I agree that it's very much a product of its time. I think it's flawed and sometimes maybe a bit petulant. However, as I don't subscribe to the "Joni is God" tendency, and I think it's very human to be petulant and a bit flawed - I think it's significant - even if I don't listen to it very much now. In fact, I don't listen to anything very much at all now - except recently Taming theTiger. Blame lack of time - blame not making the time. However, what I've always found about Joni Mitchell's music is that I've always wanted to listen to it each time a new album appears - because I knew it won't be more of the same and that it won't be comfortable listening - there'll always be an edge, an issue, or a feeling. What was great about Dog eat Dog at the time was that it signalled that Joni Mitchell was damn annoyed and more about a lot of things and wasn't going to let them pass without a comment, if not a fight. She was certainly not going to fade into a self-contented phase and let the world get on with itself. I admire her courage. It's a furrow she's ploughed since in various ways. I think that HOSL is a gem and it's my favourite album - but I also think it probably came about as much as anything through good luck and a great band as well as good judgement. Nobody's got a right to expect a masterpiece every time - or indeed musical consistency. Obvious musical consistency is what makes product - which is what makes boredom in the long term. Long may Joni albums be controversial - even in retrospect. I also > think Joni was attacking our culture lawyers, tele-evangelists and such. > Plus on top of that she was as always experimenting musicially. just a couple of clarifications: joni's duet with willie nelson was on the number 'cool water' which appeared on chalk mark in a rainstorm, not dog eat dog; 'beautiful dreamer' is actually 'impossible dreamer', and the duet with michael mcdonald is 'good friends', not just 'friends'. and if some of the songs sound just a little dated now ('ethiopia', 'shiny toys' [i love my porsche]', and 'tax-free'), they're still a pretty good picture of some of the concerns of the time. i don't know that i'd put it right up there with hejira, but i'm taking this opportunity to agree publicly with don rowe's post. dog eat dog is a very good album, one of her better ones. and at the risk of incurring your collective wrath, at this point, i'd put it over taming the tiger. 'good friends' and 'the three great stimulants' are among the best stuff she's ever done, and the haunting 'impossible dreamer' made for a great album-closer. if geffen had put a fraction of the promotion money that reprise seems to be plunking down for taming the tiger, who knows what would have happened? > She had started to use more complicated keyboards and the new, at that > time, computer technolgy. > > Drum machines, sampling. DED is a fine CD. > Some of it I really like and appreciate and some of it I don't....... at the time, a lot of people decried it for its 'cold', 'electronic' (as opposed to electric) feel, and i think some people may have seen thomas dolby's name in there, and, putting one and one together to get three, pronounced the album 'too british' for them. maybe it's not THE best, but it's on my short list, along with hejira, court and spark, chalk mark in a rainstorm, and turbulent indigo. lurker bill ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Nov 1998 03:55:36 -0300 From: "wallykai" Subject: RE: (NJC) THE BITCH Thanks Yous Hi S LA! Hello: At the Toronto show Joni was treated with incredible respect by all the fans, whether they be there for Dylan or for her. This was in fact the best crowd of people I have ever seen, friendly etc... The security were wonderful and laid-back as well. Joni was dressed beautifully, and looked very happy throughout the show. I was most happy to see her being treated well, as she deserves that. Her set was fantastic. Marvin Gaye's Trouble Man really stood out for me, what a rendition!!! I find her a really classy artist, who feels every word of what she puts forth. She also seems to have a great appreciation for her fans. A gentleman in a white tux who I spoke to before Dylan came on left a lovely bouquet of roses for her on the stage which she graciously accepted. This gentleman was also a big Dylan fan, and also was at the Ottawa show. In Ottawa she was treated equally well, and you could tell it really shone through in her set, she bowed with her entire band at the end of the show, all their arms around each other and seemed to know that she was very appreciated. She was indeed, and I did thoroughly enjoy her set. There was no stage rushing at either show during Joni's set. In Ottawa the crowd were very receptive, you could hear a pin drop. She even gave us the story about Ireland and the Magdalene Laundries which was lovely. When she goofed up on one of the songs, she laughed and said "I am just learning this" and continued, I thought this was so cool.
