Excellent Mr Rowe! You won't get any argument from on this. I love
DED-passionately. Perhaps it is so unpopular because she sings of stuff we
would rather ignore so we can carry on enjoying our lifestyles without guilt
and without feeling the mass of pain and suffering beyond our small lives.

Subject: either early Joni memory or complete bolony
Hi all,
The recent DED posts made me think where I first heard Joni. S&L and DED
were the first albums I got to listen to, and I love them both, but
that's not why I'm writing. I remember having heard (of) her long before
that, but I couldn't connect her with any specific tracks or even what
she sounded like. She wasn't exactly an everyday figure here in Finland
where I grew up. I guess I had the usual folkie image of her (DED took
care of that misconception..)
I was only one year old when STAS came out, so her early career was
understandably a bit blurry in my memory. But in the 80's when I bought
all the albums, I had almost a vision when I heard "Rainy Night House".
I know there weren't videos those days when it came out, but I remember
being sitting on the floor, watching an animated piece of music on TV.
It wasn't a children's song, it was "adult music" but it wasn't
boring(!). I must have been 5 or 6 and the track totally captured me
then, it was haunting and exciting. I know RNH was never a single, but
is it possible that this kind of animation was made for it? I don't
remember anyone ever mentioning it here, so I'm afraid it must be some
other track. But even in that case, does anyone have any idea if that
kind of thing was common those days? It would be lovely to have that
kind of Joni memory from my childhood. So please be gentle when you
trash it! It's probably only some delirious dream I had when I had the
measles!
Other than that from TV those days, I only remember a low-voiced woman
singing "Mr. Bojangles" in some TV special with really original, weird
dancing. Lots of long legs taking really big steps.. Who was that? Anne
Murray? Am I mad?

Don,
A great thesis on DED. I've also thought it is much-maligned and is a
brilliant piece of work, but you brought much more insight into it. It is
Joni's own brilliant manifesto on the mid-1980s when the lawyers, loan
sharks and televangelists were going way on up the cash-and-flash
rollercoaster.
DED is my least personal favorite, but not because I think there is anything
wrong with it at all - I'm just from that Early Joni branch of the tribal
family tree!

Good suggestion, Mark. I second.
This brings me to something I've been thinking about. My husband is a
marathon runner. There is one marathon that he does (one half marathon
also) that he has never missed. He has T- shirts from each year since the
marathons began. He is quite proud of them. I was wondering if there is
something like this we could do for each year that the JMDL is alive. As a
suggestion ... a different style bumper sticker each year (?) Kind of like
collector items that commemorate each passing year. I know the bumper
sticker idea is under construction. Any thoughts?

Dave Alvin is *hardly* hopeless, clunky and stupid. He can, at times,
be loud. A comparison to Iron Butterfly is ridiculous becuase their
music and certainly lyrics are quite different. If you couldn't take
Mr. Alvin loud then try his "King of California" CD on Rounder. It is
his loud, rockin' music done acoustically--and done this way before the
infamous MTV series. He is stylish, intelligent (musically and
lyrically), poignant, and quite a guitar player. I thought his set in
Chicago was great and I was thrilled to see him.
Maybe you were anticipating Joni so much that you dissed Dave Alvin
becuz he got in the way of your seeing/hearing her sooner. If you like
Joni, who can be a tough listen at times, I don't understand how you
wouldn't give Dave Alvin a chance, at least. You dismissed him without

Have I told this story before? Stop me, if you've heard this.
When I went to the Soviet Union in 1988--on a kind of cultural
exchange: 7 American film students and 7 Soviet film students came
together to make a music video (I shot the documentary about the
venture) in the time of glasnost and peristroika. I made some tapes to
take with me--hopefully to trade, but that was a foolish dream. Anyway,
one of the albums I recorded was Dog Eat Dog and as we were traveling
one day, I was listening to it on my Walkman. One of the Soviet
students (who spoke/speaks excellent English) asked to hear it what I
was listening to and immediately fell in love with it. The first song
he heard was Good Friends--and he and I have remained good friends since
that experience. I have not been back there but he has been here
several times.

Subject: Visible Joni (beware - LONG)
I am going to relate the "mockingbird story" that Joni told to us Wednesday
evening. First off, let me say that I felt like I was caught by Star
Trek's tractor beam when Joni and I make eye contact that night. I just
stood, transfixed, listening as she turned her anxiousness on stage into
this wonderful analogy.
As she was walking from the bar to the elevator, with the JMDL contingent
following her, she suddenly stopped by the cushy chairs that were the site
of the first "close" encounter earlier that afternoon. I had left the bar
a bit before the group, so I was lingering in the foyer area. She caught
up with me, the group tailing her, and began to tell us of the mockingbird.
The story went something like this: When I lived in Laurel Canyon there was
this mockingbird that sang so sweetly in the evenings. It was funny
though, because when a car would come up the hill, the bird would stop
singing. As soon as the sound of the car engine faded away, the bird would
resume it's wonderful song.
Now, you can read into this what you will, but I took it as an explanation
of why the distractions sidetracked her singing. What a wonderful way to
evoke what she was feeling on stage without being judgmental of the
audience. I wish she would be comfortable enough to incorporate this story
into her set if she gets distracted in the future.
Alrighty, now for the details of the third meeting. To say that we
Detroiters know how to party would be an understatement. Let's just say
that the thrill of meeting Joni twice in one day, then seeing a smoking
performance, was way better than any drug. I think we were all buzzing
from a natural high that kept us up late in the evening. Most of the group
didn't stay at the hotel. Robbert had to leave for Toronto, Kelly needed
to get home before her husband started to worry, Terry and Marian played
and entertained us for quite a while, but even they were too spent from the
exciting day. Amy decided at the last minute to spend the night in her own
bed, and Jeanne needed to get home too. That left Jim, Mary and I. Since
the suite was so large the three of us managed to have sleeping
arrangements that were very private and comfortable.
Ninja Jim, as I will always think of him now *G* had to be up and gone
early. Mary and I never even knew he had left! I am an early riser by
nature, so when I woke up and saw the sun, that was all the sleeping I was
going to do. I busied myself by cleaning up the debris created by blissful
listers. The morning was golden and warm so when my cleaning was done I
retired to the balcony to soak up what may be the last warm morning of
1998. As smoke drifted up from the room below I daydreamed that Joni was
sitting on the second floor doing the same.
Mary rolled out of bed around 10:00, and we began to talk about departure
plans. After a few phone calls to Terry and Jeanne we had things figured
out and got packed up and ready to go. I kept going over to my book that
Joni had signed, opening it and smiling at the inscription "Hello Sue". I
caught Mary looking at me and felt a tinge of guilt at the memory of her
saying that she didn't get Joni's autograph at either of the chance
meetings yesterday. I slowly closed the cover of the book and slipped it
into the ziplock bag for safe storage on the journey home.
We had quite a bit of food left over that I wanted to return to Terry so I
knew that there would be at least two trips out to my car. I took the
first load out while Mary was rounding up her things. When I got back to
the room Mary and I managed to get the rest of our stuff down to the lobby
to check out. There was still too much for me to take to my car in one
trip and Mary had to wait in the lobby for Jeanne who had kindly offered to
take her to the airport.
As I was walking back to the hotel, singing Crazy Cries of Love, who was
standing outside talking to the bellman????? Of course you know who! She
looked great, wearing the same outfit as the day before, but we can forgive
her as she was traveling. Mary and I darted outside to wait alongside her.
My eyes about bugged out, seeing Joni in the full sunlight. What beauty to
see her blonde hair shimmering in the autumn sun. She smiled in
recognition of something, I thought maybe it was us, but it was across the
street. "Kline Gallery" Mary heard her say, and away she went.
We thought that was it for us, and Mary's last chance was lost. Luckily we
were wrong, and she steered back to our side of the street. Two other fans
got to her first, and I stood behind Mary, goading her into getting out the
CD she wanted signed. We looked in vein for the pen that Joni had used to
sign my book, but had to settle for an old bic. The couple left Joni just
as an emerald green Expedition driven by Larry Kline pulled up to the door.
I walked on, encouraging Mary all the way.
That was when our meek little Mary stood up and did what I couldn't all
three times we had seen Joni. She called out her name just as Joni was
stepping up the door of the vehicle. Mary asked Joni to sign her Taming
the Tiger CD. Joni did so, graciously, even though her ride was waiting.
Mary told her how much she enjoyed the concert and how great the band
sounded. Joni reiterated that she really liked playing with the guys. She
and Mary said their goodbyes.
Timing is everything in life. In these two incredible days, it was the
stuff that dreams are made of (Colin, that Carly lyric quote was for you!).
In another post I will tell you more details of Joni at the hotel bar. Did
anyone mention that we got a sneak peek of her new book?
Take care listers!

The only thing I can come up here was an animation that appeared on the

So many of you Detroit gang have made mention of Joni's magnetic eye
contact. This was what I remember the most about her, too, along with the
visible aura/radiance that surrounds her. When I met her she got up right
in my face and aimed that eye on me. It was amazing. There were sparklers

I agree with Brett's earlier review about Joni putting on a great show. She
seemed in fine form, her voice was very strong, she was happy and smiling
and had good interaction with the audience. Her band was great. This is
the first time I have seen her and I wasn't diappointed. I was pleasantly
surprised by her setlist - it had great variety. Someone said in an earlier
post the famous high cheekbones were gone - her face was much rounder. From
where I was sitting, she still had those great cheekbones, she was dressed
very elegantly and looked lovely.
Brett wrote:
<<<>>>
I honestly did not hear anyone being loud or obnoxious or heckling Joni or
giving her a hard time. At the end of the show she thanked Toronto and she
got a thunderous ovation for her efforts.
I would add though my own personal thoughts about Joni appearing at a venue
like this as a double bill - it almost invites the kind of behaviour some of
the members have talked about - hecking, etc. Someone else gave an example
of Mary Chapin Carpenter singing at a show and someone yelling for the
Mavericks who were also on the same bill.
There were many many Joni fans at this concert, on either side of me and in
front and behind me. Some left and didn't return when Bob appeared. On the
other hand about half an hour into Joni's set 3 people got up and left and
returned later for Bob. If people are not enjoying an act this certainly is
the courteous thing to do. On the other hand there were 3 young guys
sitting behind me who yapped the whole time Joni was on, saying she was too
jazzy for them and that they couldn't wait for Dylan. They were not loud,
just annoying. Thank God a young lady beside me turned around, glared at
them and said "maybe you should wait outside if you think she's no good".
That did the trick, they clammed right up! I'm sure there are times that
kind of reaction would backfire. I wish Joni would appear at a smaller
venue where she was the main headliner. Everyone going to the show would be
a fan and know exactly what to expect. They wouldn't need some ignorant
reviewer to tell them if the show was any good or not but then again true
Joni fans can make up their own minds!
Brett, it was great to meet you - you certainly get around!

ballad inspired by Hollywood's legendary
Laurel Canyon. But the striking blond actress,
best know for playing Kelly Bundy on Fox TV's
Married with Children, could easily have been
Mitchell's muse. Many stars, from Mitchell
herself to Jim Morrison to Steven Spielberg, have
lived within the deep shadows and narrow twisting
lanes of the canyon, but Applegate is one of the
few who know it as their hometown".....
Trivia tidbit: Christina Applegate's mother Nancy
Priddy is Stephen Stills ex-girlfriend. Christina
used to call him "uncle-daddy".
Joni's name seems to be popping up everywhere
these days!!! :-)

Hi! I don't suppose there are any industrial fans on the list, but on
the off-chance there is, you have to get the Skinny Puppy remix cd
"remix dystemper". It is a great reworking of their songs. I have been
a fan of Skinny Puppy since I was 16, back when Nettwerk records had a
total of 6 albums on the label, and it is great to see some new Puppy
product out there. Strangely enough, Skinny Puppy is the one act that I
was totally obsessed with as a teen, next to Joni of course... Strange
mix, I know! Even though their music still sorta gives me the willies,
I love it!

Sorry list,
I still don't know how to paste a quote from a previous post...
referring to Don Rowe's enthusiastic recommendation of Dog Eat Dog...
did I miss a plug for Shiny Toys? I didn't see it, Don, and that's my
eight year old son's favorite Joni song. :>)

Saw the following on SonicNet music news:
Legendary rock-songstress Joni Mitchell lashed out at two concert-goers
seated in the orchestra section of Indianapolis' Market Square Arena during
her show there Monday with folk-rock icon Bob Dylan. Disturbed by the two
mimicking and mocking her, Mitchell is said to have shouted: "You a--holes
... yes, you! ...You're ruining my performance. ...You're ruining it for
everybody. ... You rude little f---s! ... You're getting drunk, and if
you're waiting on Bobby, then why don't you leave?" The crowd cheered its
support of Mitchell strongly, according to brothers Bob and Tom Hanna,
members of the Joni Mitchell Internet Discussion List, who also were seated
in the orchestra section, and who added that Mitchell explained further to
the audience, "They're mimicking the way I move. ... It's inhibiting. ...
We're human up here. ... It's not a movie." Mitchell and her band then
broke into a ferocious rendition of her song "Sex Kills." Mitchell's
publicist could not be reached for comment. Chad Bosworth of
Indianapolis-based Sunshine Promotions, which set up the concert, said no
actions were taken by arena officials to quiet the offending two, since the
situation quickly got under control once Mitchell addressed them.
