You gotta love it. Written by Jim Derogatis Joni Mitchell, `Taming the Tiger' Joni Mitchell's ``Taming the Tiger'' (Reprise)--the 19th album of her career--is strong enough to win you over even if you've never been a fan and don't even know who she is. (Say, kids, there was this thing called Woodstock, and she wrote a song about it even though she wasn't there, and ... oh, never mind.) Producing herself, Mitchell has crafted a seductive, jazzy album that might have been meant to evoke Ricki Lee Jones doing trip-hop, if Joni cared about such hip formulations. But no. She's an artist who always has been committed to following her own distinctive muse, commercial considerations be damned. What's more, she's one tough broad, and you just gotta love her. At times, Mitchell sounds like the godmother of the riot grrrls, and Courtney Love has nothing on her. On ``Lead Balloon,'' she sings, ``An angry man is just an angry man/But an angry woman--bitch!'' And on ``No Apology,'' she delivers a scathing attack on U.S. servicemen who raped a Japanese girl in Okinawa. Elsewhere, on ``Face Lift'' and ``Stay in Touch,'' she sings with naked emotion and gentle vulnerability about her relationship with her mother and her daughter, with whom she was recently reunited. (Mitchell gave up her child for adoption 35 years ago.) Tying the two strains together are a beautiful instrumental (``Tiger Bones,'' the concluding hidden track) and a cover of the old Western song ``My Best to You'' by the Sons of the Pioneers. These 11 tracks make for a gripping and rewarding disc that's perfectly in tune with the '90s. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Oct 1998 07:13:22 -0600 From: mann@chicagonet.net Subject: Meeting Joni! Terry, What a thrill meeting Joni and conversing like girlfriends!! I actually had a great dream last night that I too got to meet her. There was a bunch of us girls in a house-like venue. We were up in the bedroom after the concert talking then took the little spiral staircase to the kitchen underneath. Joni started cooking and we were all chatting away (teazing each other, laughing, gossiping, etc). It was GREAT! (and I didn't make too much a fool out of myself!! hahaha) Now, I truly believed all my dreams had come true. The last one being to see Joni in concert and be about 3 feet from her. This morning I read your new post and I was eating every word and drooling!: Joni radiates warmth. She looks you straight in the eye while talking as if she's known you your whole life. She smiles and is animated. You want, no you NEED to reach out and touch her! She signed autographs, posed for pix I have a NEW dream now............ Thanks for a GREAT story! I wish he had reviewed last night's show. These reviewers just aren't up to the task. In today's Globe and Mail, Alan Niester says this: The comments in [. . ] are mine Pop music has traditionally fed on its past. . . . Yeah, well, last night's pairing of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell - played out before a disappointing crowd of 8,000 - decidedly wasn't one of those shows. . . While Dylan at least superficially delves into his storied past (although many of the songs are so reworked as to be, at times, virtually unrecognizable), the enigmatic Ms. Mitchell almost seems to sneer at hers. Last night's appearance centred almost exclusively on either newer material or lesser-known older album cuts. With only a couple exceptions (Big Yellow Taxi and Woodstock, which opened and closed her performance) [what about Free Man in Paris? Am I too close to it all? Are Amelia and Hejira "obscure?] , Mitchell's set list contained numbers known to only her most dedicated fans [I must say that, with songs like DJRD, I did feel like part of a special exclusive club]. Backed by a quartet - which contained, as usual [???], "my dear ex-husband Larry Klein" on fretless bass - Mitchell was at times sombre (Harry's House), at time upbeat (Black Crow) and at times angry and aggressive (Sex Kills). But she was rarely playful or accommodating [What in the world does accommodating have to do with anything???] In fact the two numbers which did strike a familiar chord were played solo, oddly enough, with Woodstock as a virtual lament [I'm sure this guy would want it to remain, or is it become?, an anthem, sung and played in the style of Aerosmith or some other rockin' band like, Dave Alvin - the horror]. Predictably, many in the audience grew restless and annoyed (calls to 'play something' and for 'Boooobbb' occasionally rained down [I didn't hear any of this - I think this reviewer was either in the rafters somewhere or wishing that the many dedicated fans who were listening and loving Joni's set would do what he wanted them to do - call back Dave Alvin], but Mitchell carried on regardless. It was, overall, a somewhat self-indulgent [see how polite Torontonians are? He can only say "somewhat" The real truth is that he wouldn't say 'shit' if he had it in his mouth - as you'll see below with his comments on Dave Alvin.] met with what can only be described as a mixed reaction. ..... The long evening was opened by roots rocker Dave Alvin, who parlayed a Johnny Cash singing voice, some Woody Guthrie numbers (notably Promised Land and Dough-re-mi) and Little Richard styled retro-rock into a short set that - had more people been around early in the evening to see it - could very nearly have stolen the headliners' thunder [What a fool! This short set was worse that the first concert I ever went to - Iron Butterfly on the Inaggadadavida tour - hopeless, clunky, loud and stupid. But I suggest that once you enter the Pub, just hang right there- it's an area nearest the sidewalk that has a couple of open windows to the outside, and that would be a nice area to mingle; but if that's too tight, there is ample "back room" table area to sit and eat and bubble about JM. So check both areas. I work right across the street from the place (in case you haven't guessed), and I'll stop over later today and get a reading from the owner on how crowded it might be; perhaps I can "reserve " a long table, or something. I'll post back today. I'm not there (at the TC) on Sunday's too often, but it will help us there will be no matinee sports event that day: the Knicks (pro basketball)aren't playing due to the strike, and the Rangers (pro hockey) are off , so that will keep down the crowd. (Yes, The Garden CAN have 20,000 people for a basketball game at 1:00, then reconfigure the arena for a concert at 7:00; it's an amazing place. But we're in luck, the place is idle during the day). We should be able to just have a table, or drift around the place, check a football score if you're into that. It's low key. Look forward to meeting any of you. - -Drew ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Oct 1998 10:28:48 EST From: Drewdix@aol.com Subject: Re: pre-show pub <> And I want to support Duane's extremely generous, delicious effort at his house--I wish I could be there myself-- Let's make it clear that the Triple Crown is just another option for meeting before and /or after. Actually, there is. If anyone can prove that astrology (or any other supernatural phenomenon) works, there's a foundation that will pay you over 1 million dollars [http://www.randi.org/ ]. Astrology has been practiced for thousands of years, and yet it has not advanced much from the vague predictions that one reads in the newspaper. A nice test one can do in one's own home is to cut out horoscopes and separated them from their supposedly associated sun signs. Then ask people to pick out their horoscope based on what it says. Another fun test is to give a single horoscope to a large group of people and ask them to rate it as to how much it fits them. One experiment was done in which every reader rated the horoscope as being a 4 or 5 on a scale of fitting from 0 to 5 (best fit). This was the result depite the fact that each horoscope was exactly the same. The key is to write something that is sufficiently vague that everyone will think it fits them. (you are kind, you worry about money, there are changes in your life). Also, the moon affect on crime you cite is unsupported by scientific evidence. The statistics done by astrologers is faulty. You can read about this at: http://www.csicop.org/si/9705/moonshine.html. Astrology is a big industry. They should certainly be able to muster some funds to scientifically test their assumptions. cheers jimbo James A. Murray Dept. At first, being 17 I guess, I thought her voice was too high!! This was on Ladies of the Canyon when it first came out. But after a couple listens I realized there was something very special here. I've seen her in concert 3 times, but unfortunately, the most recent was about 25 years ago. She just doesn't perform in Hawaii anymore. Hell, Hawaii was her inspiration for Big Yellow Taxi, and it's all so true. Not much time to write right now, but, I'm very interested in the tape tree and the video tree. I have none of these recordings, and I want them all!! What I have to offer is in reference to Asharas' post asking for help with video duplication to PAL format. My sister is head of sales at one of LAs' large video duplication facilities, and she routinely does PAL format work. She can do masters as well as bulk copy production work. So Ashara and others can contact me for further info. In the meantime, anyone who can help with tape tree or video tree material, please let me know. Wheeling my cart toward the checkout, what to my surprise should begin playing but Joni's "Conversation"! Of course I had to wheel AWAY from the checkout and spin around the store for the duration of the song, which unfortunately was punctuated with about six different bursts of store announcements: "Secrets and sharing soda ... [Ground chuck just $1.59! Snow crab clusters $3.99! Seafood steamed 'for free' while you shop!] ... She speaks in sorry sentences ... [Pastry you have a call on Line 2!]" I don't recall any interruptions during Jackson's song, nor during the song that followed "Conversation" -- who recorded that song with the refrain "I wonder where the lions are," anyway? Hopefully, you'll put up with me as I defend this most-maligned of Joni's efforts. It is my hope that some on the list will listen to this remarkable gem of an album with fresh ears ... and yet I am fully prepared for failure. Into the fray - -- Set your WayBack machine about 16 years or so. You will find yourself in the middle of some very troubled and changing times. Mr. Reagan has called Soviet Russia "the evil empire" and speculated that a "limited nuclear war" is, in fact, "winnable." Millions of dollars will be lost in the collapse of the savings and loan industry. Millions more will be lost in the worst stock market crash since the Great Depression. Yet through it all, the American public is over-extending itself on credit cards sporting 20+% interest rates, in a mad rush to fill the emptiness of their lives with material goods. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands will suffer and die of famine on the African continent. It is one of the great human tragedies that so few will hear the sound of their cries above the vaccuous jingo-ism filling the air. Someone asked, "What was she thinking?" Of these and other very troubling things ... Enter omnia: Joni Mitchell, Larry Klein (spelled it right this time Marsha!), Thomas Dolby and Mike Shipley. Joni has seen the trouble in the times, and starts DED with a fire ... "Good Friends." So reflective of the times is this track, that it even features prominently the "voice of the 1980s" ... Michael McDonald on back vocals. Dolby's keyboard work is industrial and stark against the vocal melody, anchored by a driving bass line. Already we know what we're in for, or that's what we've been led to believe ... In case you've ever wondered what a Madonna song would sound like if Joni covered it, may I gratiously suggest "Fiction". Fans of "Building the Perfect Beast" will also recognize Dolby's riffing in the driving sections. It is here that you can begin to see that Joni is using the musical and production conventions of the times as a weapon of protest. And DED is more a protest album than anything Joni ever did with an acoustic guitar. Which brings us to the unquestionable masterpiece of the album -- "The Three Great Simulants". I get the idea that even folks who dislike DED really like this number. The power of "Let me show you how your petty aggravations can profit you!" still gives a chill these many years gone by. Sonically devastating and deep, the texture of this song keeps it fresh as the day it was recorded. "Tax Free" comes next, with a searing indictment of televangelism, and it's sanctimonius hypocrisy. Lyrically eloquent, daringly counter-pointed with Rod Steiger's harrangue ... layered over dense electronica -- if you like, a choir of silicon-chip angels. In the end, Joni Mitchell doesn't lie -- it's all show-biz. If anything, this is probably the focal point of DED. The show biz, and what a great trip we're treated to as we listen. "Smokin" -- all right, I'll admit it. If you don't smoke, you probably don't get it. But I ask you, of all the rhythm samples one could choose, is not the empty cigarette machine brilliant? Think of a stressed out doo-wop quartet of Jonis, singing for smokes on a NY street corner and you'll start liking this one, I think. "Dog Eat Dog" has a lilt and an easy grace that comes quite close to making you forget the anger and dispair of the lyrics. Lest we forget, this is exactly what the 80s were like -- the smile on the face followed by the knife in the back. Again, the artificial depth of the synths and bass line illustrates the thiness of the disguise covering the "snakebite evangelists and racketeers" that were running the show back then. "Ethiopia" picks up on many classic Joni themes, from 'Big Yellow Taxi' to 'Furry Sings the Blues' to 'The Chinese Cafe'. She's long carried a sadness about beauty and nature falling to "parking lots and shopping malls", and the terrific tragedy of the famine in Ethiopia focuses that sadness poignantly. I think that we should not forget that such starvation continues around the world, but for some reason it no longer seems newsworthy. "Impossible Dreamer" and "Lucky Girl" round off DED, which closes more intimately and melodically than it opens. Here we find echoes of 'Strange Boy' and 'Just Like This Train', both lyrically and instrumentally. There are many terrific couplets in these two songs, and Shorter's familiar sax makes them seem like old friends. DED is certainly one of mine. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Oct 1998 22:03:00 +0000 From: catman Subject: Re: This Astrology Stuff...
