I was very honored to be asked by Michael to stand in for him tonight at the benefit premiere. Everyone I spoke to was very concerned about the hurricane. From earlier reports I thought the situation may not be as bad as expected. Unfortunately, Honduras, especially the offshore islands have been very badly hurt. After the screening, the party milled around for awhile and I was told that Dennis Quaid wanted to charter a plane immediately, get on it and bring assistance. From everything I learned tonight, he seems to be very dedicated to, and involved with, the IHC and the foundation started by Michael's mother. There was a full turnout of many pretty people at this party and the exposure for the IHC was excellent. For more Hollywood content, read on - I had a theater seat in the VIP section and sat about 6 feet in front of Dennis and Meg Ryan. They are both even more beautiful in person - he is really a major hunk and she is radiant and could pass for about 18. They are both two of the most natural people I have ever encountered - celeb or non-celeb - and still seem madly in love with each other. Meg beamed me that smile of hers (oh, I know - she probably thought I was *somebody* hehe). Directly behind me sat a major agency legend and his wife. The legend was pointing out Julia Phillips in the crowd (former Hollywood bigshot producer and author of the scathing expose "You'll Never Eat Lunch In This Town Again.") It was a classic Hollywood moment when his wife commented drolly "waaalll, everything she wrote in that book was true. It was awwwful, but every word was true." In front of me was a young guy with long, uncombed blond hair, dressed in rumpled Gap attire who kept smiling at me. I thought "oh he's probably another 'regular' person like me." Um, turns out he was the screenwriter of the movie. Next to me was a very efficient looking woman in helmet hair and a crisp gray suit. A publicist, I thought. Um, turned out to be the Controller for the State of California. Attire was specified as "formal or semi-formal." So, of course, I dressed to the nines and, of course, in true industry tradition, everyone else was in jeans and black leather. Dennis wore a black suit with a white t-shirt. Meg was in well-worn thrift store chic. The movie ("Savior") left a long and deep effect on everyone. It is set around the war in Bosnia in 1993. There literally was not one dry eye in the room after the film ended. It is due to premiere in LA and NY on November 20th. Quaid and Natasjia Kinski are the only American actors in the film - the rest of the cast are from Yugoslavia. The film opened there in April and all advertising for it has been banned by the government. Despite this, the film has been No. 1 since it opened. It is a war film that holds nothing back but also shows the small triumphs of love and humanity in the midst of unspeakable horror. Oliver Stone, producer of the film, was there in large presence and is looking healthy. There were many other well-known actors and industry people there, too, including Kathleen Quinlan and Brian De Palma's ex, Nancy. I'm not so good anymore at putting the names with the faces and should probably start studying the trades and tabloids more thoroughly ;-) Thanks again, Michael. Let us know how things are going when you have a chance. Our thoughts are with you. Pity that fear of reprimand, as opposed to decency and civility, might rule. If you don't like Joni, hang out in the lobby, and take your seat when Dylan comes on stage. But don't heckle or distract her, cause there are thousands of people at each venue who come to see *her* -- we deserve a quality performance, and she deserves the opportunity to deliver one. I hope the disrespect stops, cause I know Joni will never stop defending herself. It's just a shame that she has to *ask* for respect to begin with, you'd think with her tenure in this business that respect would come automatically, even if one isn't a fan of her music. -Kenny On 10/28/98, Les Irvin wrote: Dylan fan #3: Not much to say about Joni Mitchell. I NEVER buy TV Guide and yesterday bought one becase Blues Clues is on the front and Myles, my 4 year-old, LOVES the show and also loves to look thru mags, catalogs. So I thought why not get him a copy. Now, I'm going to have to go out and buy my own copy! So, here I'm paging thru it this morning (as I hadn't given it too him yet.....or it would be gone in his room somewhere!) and run across a picture of Joni on page 14!! Here's what the piece on her says: "Cheers to two spectacularly sophisticated ladies of pop music. Joni Mitchell's new pay-per-view concert (Friday, November 6, $19.95), taped in an intimate setting in Los Angeles last May, is an intoxicating smapler of her evocative and eloquent songcraft, from "Big Yellow Taxi" to big swaths of her latest album, Taming the Tiger. Another TV treasure can be found on Judy. This exhaustive new box set of Judy Garland's music contains a bonus video: a rare retrospective of Garlands 1963-64 variety series of CBS. It's a parade of production numbers performed in glamorous gowns from "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" to Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do?" There's even a spirited duet with her daughter Liza Minelli. Joni and Judy: They broke the mold when they made those two." There's a pic of Joni and one of Judy and a caption that reads, "Voices ring: Mitchell and Garland sing their hearts out" Yeah! Something positive and appreciation of Joni's greatness!!! Also, last night my hubby & Myles were at Best Buy. My husband said he was looking at the Sattellite Dishes and suddenly saw Joni's face on the screen. The volume was down and by the time he turned it up she was gone. He said they flashed Joni's face on the screen, she was singing or talking, with the words "Available for all USSB and DIRECTV subscribers." I think it's so exciting now to see something JONI everytime I turn around these days. After so long of being in a Joni dry desert! Each in their own way are simply incredible. Here are the standouts that will probably stay with me forever ... Brian Blades -- This guy has totally succeeded where I failed as a drummer. You see, I was once accused of playing "politely" -- and gave it up. But if I'd known then that "Polite" could become the smooth, elegant fire of a Brian Blades, I'd have hung in there a bit. His work on "Black Crow" might very easily have ruined the album cut for me ... wicked quick without flailing or crashing, stinging and bright wherever called for ... a masterpiece. I can not tell you how glad I am that the kit was turned towards the audience. What a kick to watch this guy -- it's not just any player who can make me move the binocs off the SIQUOMB. Greg Liesz -- I think if Phil Spectre knew about this guy, stereo might never have gotten off the ground. Growing up as I did, in Texas, my exposure to the "peddle" steel guitar was limited to Patsy Cline, Hank Williams Sr. and Sons of the Pioneers -- lots of twang and whine. Greg plays the instrument much more like a keyboard, the sound becoming the Chelsea Morning butterscotch that sticks to all your senses. Tops to Greg on "Amelia", for he truly cut new facets into this eerie gem. Larry Kline -- Three words only ... "Night Ride Home." After the wonderful solo floating of the opening numbers, Larry's long slow glissando into the basement registers opened up the sound like an orchid - -- tears flow for the first time right here. Many kudos to Larry as well for his handy Jaco impersonation on 'Hejira' and 'Black Crow.' You might not always like his production, but hearing him live leaves no doubt in my mind that he really is the bass player of choice. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1998 10:52:59 EST From: LRFye@aol.com Subject: Re: Indianapolis: I Guess I'll Get Fried For This Eric P. wrote: > Joni actually helped the jerks out -- until she lost her cool only a few people were affected. We both liked both sets. Joni's band is quiet, nuanced, jazzy. It's a great, tight combo, with nice horn and keyboard accents. It would be great to hear this group back Bob on a few songs. As others have pointed out, the venue is way wrong for Joni's music (it's not great for Bob either, several songs, especially I'll Remember You, suffered from his "arena rock" singing). Anyway, about halfway through Joni's set she confronted a few people near the front who had been irritating her for a while (My seats were unfortunately too far back to see what was going on in the crowd). My recollection is that she called them "drunken assholes" and "stupid fucks" who were "ruining it for everyone." She ended with "if you don't want to hear me, then go out and wait till Bobby comes on, eh?" Then she launched into an intense version of "Sex Kills." After Sex Kills she semi-apologized for being "a temperamental artist". . . "we're human, what you do out there affects us up here. . .we're not a movie." Good point-- too many people think they're at home watching MTV (one guy near me was making calls on his cell phone during Bob's set!). The crowd was with her, and her already good set got better after this outburst. So, here's an artist who continually reinvents herself, playing new music to a crowd that wants to hear something different than they're getting, and some in the audience disrupt the performance. The artist responds by confronting the crowd and turning the music up a notch. Sounds like a CD I've been listening to a lot lately. They'd come to hear the guy with the acoustic guitar and harmonica sling ... so they yell out at Dylan "You're a Judas!", I suppose as some sort of reference to betraying the god of folk. Well Dylan responds with "You're a liar.", then says to the band "Play f***ing loud!" And well, they do just that. So my associate and I both remarked how you'd think Dylan fans would know how an artist can react to that kind of badgering. PS -- Joni did, in fact, crank it up a notch after her "I have the floor now" comment. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1998 11:56:56 EST From: Dreamzvill@aol.com Subject: Re: ways to handle the JMDL information flow (NJC) Fred- I laughed out loud at your description of deleting digests after letting them pile up - "like taking off a band-aid". I just wanted to share one of my most special of "Joni moments"... My husband and I drove up the California coast last Valentine's Day - it was very gray, pouring rain. We were on a mission to celebrate the day of love (we had met almost exactly 1 year previously - on February 15 - an online relationship that didn't stay online very long! :) I had just found out I was pregnant with our child. As we were driving around Santa Cruz, a song by Joni came on the radio - I was to find out later it was "A Case Of You". Something about her soaring voice, and the reference to "bitter...sweet" touched me to the core. My heart just opened up, and I began to cry. It was as if *I* wrote the song, and just heard someone else singing it. Because it surely was written about my sweet love, my man, Mr. Bittersweet, Shadows and Light in human form... Joni was singing, and it was pouring rain. Three days later, I lost the baby. But I remember that as a very special and beautiful day. I can relate to her anger and disgust. It breaks my heart because I'm sure she internalizes it (just like most artists). I gave up performing in those pop/rock (or whatever you want to call it) situations for the same reason. I used to get so upset with the people dropping bottles and talking and screaming while you're trying to give them a piece of yourself. People say the rudest things to you while you're on the stage. When I give a recital (of classical music on the paino) it's different...people sit and listen. Sure, they cough and yawn but it's not the same as what we allow people to do at pop concerts. I would love to give Joni a big hug and tell her how much I appreicate her. It's an indication of the long-faded legend's recent surge in prestige. The current Dylan renaissance was sparked by last year's raw-nerved Time Out of Mind, the artist's best album since the mid-'70s, and continues with the riveting, just-released Live 1966: The "Royal Albert Hall" Concert, recorded on his groundbreaking first U.K. tour with the band that would later become the Band. The second half of the '90s have found Dylan once again reinventing himself as a live performer, touring with an ace backing combo and delivering his classics with renewed passion, after several years of indifferent and/or incomprehensible concerts. Fellow seminal singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell--whose challenging but uncommercial '80s and '90s work has led to an involuntarily low profile in recent years--is also in the midst of something of a comeback. Her current return to live performance coincides with her new visibility as the widely acknowledged spiritual godmother of Lilith Fair--too many of whose constituents fail to grasp the subtlety, insight and ingenuity that continues to make Mitchell a significant artist. Her new album, Taming the Tiger, gracefully expands the electric, jazz-inflected direction she's been pursuing since the mid-'70s, and Mitchell has emphasized that segment of her body of work in recent shows she's played with Dylan. There's no telling how well her new material's subtle shadings will translate in the cavernous Garden, but those who've witnessed her recent shows give her high marks, so the faithful probably won't be disappointed. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1998 14:47:34 -0500 From: Tortorici@exchange.conference-board.org Subject: joni's outburst in indy Anyone who was at the Indy Joni/Bob concert please call me at (212) 339-0231 for a story I'm writing. What can I say, my knees are still trembling. It was time to check to see if our airport contingent had arrived. They were waiting for us patiently and after introductions were given, we began to pick up bags and head to the elevator. At that moment the door of the elevator opened and who was standing in it? SIQUOMB herself, on her way to a sound check. I saw her and my jaw dropped. I couldn't say anything, so I slapped Amy on the arm. She quickly darted around the potted palm and at the same instant Terry spotted Joni. She calmly said "Hi, Joni!" and that is when the fun began. Robbert, who had seen the Indy show and witnessed Joni's reaction to a rude audience member decided to drive from Indy straight to the Townsend to drop a lovely note to the concierge to give to Joni. She looked at Jim and said "Are you Robbert?" and he said yes, only to have the real Robbert step up and say hello. She relayed to Robbert the fact that she had shared the note with her band mates and they really appreciated the positive feedback. Terry told Joni thanks for touring again, and she replied that she is enjoying being out on the road with Bob and her band. Robbert asked if her could have his picture taken with her, and she complied. After that Terry stepped up and had her photo taken too. We were hovering around the foyer area of the Lobby. Present were Marian, her sister Jennifer, Mary P., Jim, Amy, Kelly, Jeanne, Terry, Robbert and me. We closed in around her and Amy asked if she would sign our books. We had taken the dust covers off as we were signing each other's books. Joni asked Amy "What is this I am signing?" and Amy replied "This is your book of Poems and Lyrics, Joni." She autographed Marian, Amy, and my books graciously. At this point the thug in the lobby decided that our gathering was drawing too much attention, so Joni eased over to the side lobby where the cushy chairs were. Amy was talking with Joni about her birth name being Amelia and that she was given up for adoption. Standing by listening were Mary P., Terry, and Marian. Thug junior approached me and Jeanne and asked what we were doing. Of course we had luggage as we were just checking in, so we told him that. Shortly after the thugs descended, Joni eased her way to the door. Terry told her that she would be taking pictures of her tonight at the concert for Wally and the web page. She told Terry that she would look for her bobbing head. Well, do you want to know what she was wearing? A small chocolate brown leather cap with a brown leather jacket hanging over a olive green shin length skirt with brown tights and brown clogs. Slung across her left shoulder was a medium sized knitted sachel. Her height? A bit shorter than Terry, so we are thinking about 5' 6". She looked well rested and not at all unhappy to see some true fans. What an experience. Some quotes now from the crowd. Joni said about the audience members who were making so much noise: "I tried to avoid them by looking to the left and right, but when they started to mimic my actions, 'the wrath of Joan' descended on them." Later on she felt bad about things and thought maybe they were fans so she smiled at the woman as she left the stage. She mouthed an apology, smiled, and the woman lit up. When Terry told Joni that she was taking pictures for the web site, Joni asked "What is your connection to Wally's website?" Terry replied that we were all fans and had traveled far and wide to see her in concert tonight. Terry told Joni that Marian was her greatest fan. Marian gushed "I love your music, I love you, Joni." Jeanne's quote about the experience? "Oh my God, oh my God!!!" Mary appreciated the fact that she didn't take the three o'clock flight into Detroit, as we would have missed the chance encounter with Joni. We want to thank Mary for taking the 2:10! Marian's sister Jennifer couldn't believe that they had the good fortune to have decided to wait for us in the lobby rather than heading up to the room. We told Joni that she could join us after the concert if she wanted. We told her we were in room 329. When we got back to the room, guess what time it was... 3:29!!!! Synchronicity! Robbert's last thought about this great chance encounter: "I died and went to Heaven." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1998 16:59:05 EST From: WombQueen@aol.com Subject: Cheers to Joni in TV Guide Since I came back online after the cross-country move, I switched to digest and I don't know if anyone's posted on this yet or not....BUT....look in this week's issue of TV Guide for the Cheers and Jeers column, and see a picture of Joni (with Judy Garland in the inset) next to the first Cheer, which praises our Siquomb and her upcoming pay-per-view special. It's nice to see that even TV Guide can give her some respect. Cheers to TV Guide for giving me some JC to write about. :) Here's what it says: CHEERS to two spectacularly sophisticated ladies of pop music [huh?]. Joni Mitchell's new pay-per-view concert (Friday, November 6, $19.95), taped in an intimate setting in Los Angeles last May, is and intoxicating sampler of her evocative and eloquent songcraft, from "Big Yellow Taxi" to big swaths of her latest album, Taming the Tiger. [This is followed by a bit on Judy Garland, which talks about her new box set, Judy, which includes a bonus video of her TV specials, for those who want to know (since she was quite a talented lady). The article ends with:] Joni and Judy: They broke the mold when they made those two. Yep. But I wonder what Judy would have done if she had to open for Bob Dylan in Indianapolis with a couple of wise-ass punks in the front row. ;) Hey, doesn't Joni have a habit of getting stuck in front of unruly crowds? Think Isle Of Wight, think that benefit concert in the 80s (was it Live Aid? I can't remember....she had to go on before a popular group like U2 or something and the audience started throwing stuff at her), and now Indianapolis. No wonder she prefers to be painting in her studio. I don't blame her one bit. - --Womby ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1998 17:06:30 EST From: RickieLee1@aol.com Subject: lindsay learns to groove..(NJC). hey, and i even remembered the njc! cool. as previously reported to you all, my 7 year old, the lovely lindsay, has become a big fan of TTT, even if she garbles up the lyrics. her current favorite is lead baloon. so, here we are, home at last, making ourselves a cup of tea in the kitchen, with joni blasting (no one else is home so we indulge ourselves by cranking up the volume) and lead baloon comes on. and lindsay starts to dance. or at least, that's what she calls it. "lindsay," i say, gentle father, "that's not dancing, that's jumping!" my subtle critique has no effect what so ever, as she continues to bounce around the kitchen, like some recipient of electroshock. i inform her that when i was young, there actually was a dance called the jerk. this gets her attention. "show me," she says, (the empiricist.) so, i dragged out my groove, sleeping all these years, and gave her a bang up demonstration of that great old dance that probably made more than one chiropractor a very wealthy person. lindsay was stopped in her tracks. and i think, wow, i am really impressing this kid! so i'm getting into it now, keeping pace with joni's monster chords and that chorus "lead, lead, lead, lead baloon" - letting that old backbone slip with just about every syllable. "daddy," she says. "that's not dancing, THAT'S an embarrassment!" can you believe this kid????
