But before he came on stage, this happened: Joni got angry. Joni got mad. At Market Square Arena, Joni really got "bad." After finishing "Happiness is the Best Facelift" during Monday's concert, Joni Mitchell pointed and lashed out at a few fans who "smirked" at her, calling them "filthy little shits." Mitchell remained visibly shaken, and during another break between songs she explained that the rude behavior breaks her concentration. "We're human up here," she said. During the last song, she lit up a cigarette in the no-smoking arena. When the performance was over, she and her band left without an encore. What I want to know is this: Is the cigarette part of the act? Does she usually decline to do encores? - ---------- Les - not the author of this one... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 14:01:49 -0700 From: Les Irvin Subject: More Tickets Available From the Dylan list: From: YoCatch22 Subject: 11/1/98 Tickets Available I have 4 tickets I have to sell. Times Magazine Hi Jill, Thanks for spotting my letter to the editor of the LA Times regarding the Ani DiFranco "interview" about 1 month ago. They only printed a small excerpt of it, but it was still exciting to see my name in print :-) The letters to the editor ran the gamut between outrage and appreciation, very similar to our discussion on the list at the time. They're available on line at: http://www.latimes.com/sbin/iawrapper?NS-search-set=/36364/aaaa001z0364cde&NS-do c-offset=2&NS-adv-search=0& I copied and pasted them also, and I'm attaching them below, for those who are interested. -Kenny ================================================================= What Becomes a Legend Most? I delved into the Joni Mitchell interview seeking anecdotes, bits of color--insights that might give my icon a heart of flesh ("Court and Spark," by Ani DiFranco, Sept. 20). I learned absolutely nothing about Mitchell but much about DiFranco (who?) and her post-adolescent musings on feminism. Does "Inside Story" have a meaning I'm not aware of? Anna Waterhouse Pasadena * * * What I expected was a delightful meeting of minds: talented singer-songwriters from different eras comparing the now and then. What I got was a self-obsessed diatribe from a yet-to-mature performer primarily interested in airing her own opinions--and only 10 short quotes from Mitchell. The young woman's biggest concern seemed to be that Mitchell was not a DiFranco fan ("Because she has never heard my music . . . I was thrust, by default, into the role . . . of journalistic interviewer"). DiFranco herself put it best: "One more goddamn interviewer with a goddamn agenda." Steve Latshaw Burbank * * * DiFranco wrote a courageous piece about Mitchell's distaste for feminism, but what we need to hear is even more about feminism. What DiFranco had to say was more important than anything I've read about the personal lives of celebrities. Gwen Roberts gwenroberts@earthlink.net * * * I'm a 51-year-old who relates far more to DiFranco than to Mitchell, my contemporary. DiFranco is one of the finest poet-songwriters of the day, and Mitchell should take a page from the younger woman's book, both as an artist and as a woman. Marcia Goodman Santa Ana * * * An inspired concept--matching up a promising young recording artist with a bona fide legend--was a serious miscalculation. Mitchell and her loving fans deserved better. Nice photo, though. Curt Shepard, Steve Chivers Los Angeles * * * According to her own views on feminism and her alleged "appreciation" of Mitchell, DiFranco should be as offended as any Joni fan by her own egotistical, small-minded comparisons to one of the most important artists of our time. Leo Badger Riverside * * * Not to take anything away from Mitchell's musical accomplishments, but I find DiFranco's version of the media's treatment of Mitchell to be a tad revisionist. As someone involved with pop-music criticism since before DiFranco was born, I have no recollection of Mitchell being "so condescended to over the years." And concerning DiFranco's puzzlement over the canonization of Dylan: When someone--anyone--comes up with a work as commandingly cool as "Like a Rolling Stone," let me know, and I'll be the first to sign the papers for sainthood. Gene Sculatti Los Angeles * * * How presumptuous of DiFranco to think that the world would be more interested in her political views than an interview with one of the most significant singer-songwriters of our time. Not surprising, though, when you consider that she named her record label Righteous Babes. Perhaps that should be "self-righteous." Kenny Grant Forest Hills, N.Y. * * * DiFranco implied that Mitchell gave her daughter up for adoption because she didn't want to be a stay-at-home mother. Not so. Mitchell made a painful but reasonable decision based on her life situation at the time. Susan Mitchell (no relation) Encino * * * In 10 years of reading The Times, this was the first time I've seen the word "feminism" used with neither hostility nor condescension. She was wearing a deep wine colored pant suit with solid colored pants and a seasonal, autumn leaves print on the jacket. It was very baggy, and comfortable looking, like lounge wear. She wore sandels with spaghetti straps and platform heals. She was wearing matching, wine colored toe-nail polish, a gold necklace with gold double hoop earrings, and one ring on her third finger, left hand. I was close enough to study the lines on her face. She looked beautiful and I think she's aging wonderfully. No longer does she have the thin, hollow cheeks and prominant cheek bones of her youth. Her face is full and round. I get to quote Elvis Costello here; "she pulls your eyes out with a face like a magnet." The sound seemed muffled during the first verse, but it was cleaned up almost immediately. Her guitar playing was just plain funky on BYT. She was rhythm riffing like she was the ex-guitarist with James Brown and his Famous Flames. She included her Bob Dylan vocal impersonation on the "verse that Bobby wrote", and ended it with a little hip hop phrasing on the ending line that she has added; "Why'ja wanna go and do that, why'ja wanna go and do that?" Next up was a solo performance of 'Just Like This Train'. It was slower than the album version and very soulful. The band entered and she introduce 'Night Ride Home' as a song about a "magical 4th of July night." Brian Blade's drumming stood out on this one, as it did all night. Then came 'The Crazy Cries of Love' with more amazing drumming from Brian. I've never seen a band with the drummer positioned out at the front of the stage before and there is a reason for the band setting up like that. Brian is the focal point and the driving force behind this band. Everything revolves around Brian. Such subtlety and such power (thanks to Bob Hanna for that one ). An unusual combination, indeed. Next up was 'Free Man In Paris' and again it was Brian driving the song to new heights that the 'Court And Spark' version barely hinted at. She followed that with a jazzy, and driving version of 'Harry's House', minus the 'Centerpiece' section. I wish she would still include that part. Then the band launched into the first highlight of the night. A scorching, searing 'Black Crow' that rocked the house and soared like a black crow flyin'. Joni's voice was dipping and swooping like a bird in flight. Brilliant! 'Amelia' was next with Greg Leisz's suspenseful pedal steel guitar making it sound like a Bernard Herrmann horror movie soundtrack. Very haunting and down right scary. Then came 'Hejira' with Klien doing his best Jaco impersonation. A daunting task, but Klien pulled it off without a hitch. Joni said 'Listen, I think I hear Chris Botti blowing through the snowy trees". When she introduced the band later, she introduced him as Chris Botti, boddy, Booty, like she had blown his name before and was now making a little inside joke about it. But again it was Brian's drumming that made the song unforgettable as he pulled out everthing but stone knives and bear skins to hit his drums with. He used brushes, mallets, sticks, and the topper was when he used his bare hands, on the cymbols and everything. She followed that with 'Don Juan's Reckless Daughter'(DJRD). Halfway through the song she had a technical problem with the VG8. She had to stop the song in mid-stream and said "My 'machine' went out!" She went and pushed a couple of buttons and then she just picked up where she left off. I'm so glad she didn't abandon it and move on to the next song. It was so good it made me want to go and try to rediscover DJRD again, an LP that never got under my skin like the best Joni does. Then it was 'Face Lift'. Nice, album faithful version; no surprises. Next she introduced 'Sex Kills'. She said, "This song has taken on a whole new meaning lately, politically, and I'd like to dedicate it to Mr. Clinton. It's called 'Sex Kills'." Good joke. It was again very funky with Joni in supurb voice. Then she told us the story of 'The Magdalene Laundries'. She obviously feels very close to this song. She sang it with such conviction that I swear I was able to hear the lump in her throat as she spit out the lyric with more venom and emotion than seemingly possible. Just short of actually singing through her tears; she seemed close. Next she sang 'Moon At The Window' and I'll tell you, after 'Sex Kills' and 'The Magdalene Laundries' it was good to hear that at least "the theives left that behind." She then put down the VG8, lit a cigarette, and came back to the mic transformed into a soul singing diva for Marvin Gaye's 'Trouble Man', with some stunning scat vocals; a jazz/soul hybrid. Then came the show stopper. 'Comes Love', cig in hand, front floor lighting, very dramatic. For a minute I thought I was in some smokey jazz cellar in New York, circa 1939, "without a worry in the world. A glass of beer in one hand, and my arms around a girl." (I have to thank Tom Waits for that line, wish I'd written it!) Her set ended at 9:10 p.m. She played for a heavenly 80 minutes. The last thing I'll say is, if you think this is a glowing review, she was even better on Sunday night in Chicago. At the time of the interruption in Chicago, neither of us believed that the outburst from the stands was anything but a show of enthusiasm for Joni. But in the difficult communication between stage and seats, she ended up excusing the fan away somewhat clumsily. The fan she was talking to was below us (we were high and to the left of the stage for those of you blessed with seats on the floor). She was at the least confused over the reason for the outburst from the seats and could have ignored it from the perspective of the audience. I suspect that if she had the benefit of hindsight she would agree. With regard to Mr. Rowe's comments regarding the Dylan fans, what may have comprised his audience 30 years ago IMHO does not necessarily represent his audience today. The Dylan segment was not "the poet" at work, sitting on his stool, strumming his six string and interacting with the faithful. The Dylan segment was a strong rock performance with lyrics which were simply a weak excuse for a tremendous rock line. It was immensely stirring, but unfulfilling for those who came to hear a poet. His older works did stir the audience but overall his faithful came to hear a rock concert and were not disappointed. I reserve the title, "The Poet" for our own SIQUOMB. Please, everyone keep the reports of the concerts rolling in. Having been in the United Center, I relive it with every report whether Minneapolis, Indianapolis, and so forth! Your insight and artistry encourage me to look more deeply into her work. But, I for one can not immediately jump in and say that everything about Joni's statements in Indianapolis is necessarily so great. If they were bugging her and she wanted to say something, I agree that is her right. By the same token, I think most professional musicians know that there is "always somebody" and I think most learn to just ignore them. Joni actually helped the jerks out -- until she lost her cool only a few people were affected. When she stopped playing, swore, blew lines, etc. then everybody in the place lost out. How did that help the situation? I think the way she handled the heckler at the Gorge show I attended during MLaundries was infinitely better: he did throw her off briefly her but she threw the comment back at him and made everybody laugh at the idiot. Seems a lot better than a tirade, no encore, etc. Oh well, that's my two cents worth. Judging from the posts so far, I guess I am in the minority. Now back to the music (I hope) .............. It looks extremely bad for the home team. In 74 we had Hurricane FiFi that was only a category 2 hurricane and 3000 people lost their lives. This is a category 4 storm and it is moving so slowly that it is continuing to beat the hell out of the islands and coast. My family and friends are mostly in San Pedro Sula and are still ok (we spoke at about 8pm), but Emily's family is In Puerto Cortes on the coast (and we can't get in touch with them) and I have so many close friends in the islands and La Ceiba where it is extremely bad. Thanx to everyone who has been sending their thoughts and love our way. Any medical people or volunteers that want to travel with our relief group please contact me privately. Most of the board of directors of International Hospital for Children are out in LA partying with my stand-in best pal Kakki, at the Directors Guild, seeing the premiere of Dennis Quaid's new movie Savior (which he has been to my people for so long). I hope they all have a great time cause we need to get to work in the morning. I wish you all well and will try to keep in touch as time and access permit. Similar to the Indianapolis concert, she did get into it with the crowd once. During one between song break while she was talking someone kept yelling something like "Hey Bobby" to which she responded "...I have the floor now". I had the feeling all along that the vast majority of the crowd was restless and tired of sitting through two hours of opening acts. My opinion all along was that this show should not have been a double bill because the two artists are not evenly matched, either in fan representation or in artistic clout. Solution 1: Bill Joni as the opening act, give her 30 minutes and give us Bob for 2 hours. Solution 2: Give a definite time when Bob will start (downside is that Joni will be irritated about having to perform in front of a half filled arena Solution 3: Anxious and bored fans in Chicago should hang walk around and look at all the basketball stuff in the United center, no need to be rude - ------ Dylan fan #2: This very fine Dylan newsgroup is usually not up to date on Joan. Some people here still think she's in love with Dylan, even though she clearly sang in 1975 (about 1965) "I loved (past tense) you dearly." And it's been a couple of decades since Joan got Robbie Robertson's lyrics wrong. 'Stonewall' became 'Stoneman', and 'the' was dropped from 'Robert E. Lee' long, long ago. - ------ Dylan fan #3: Not much to say about Joni Mitchell. I got bored and restless. Glad I didn't talk as she might've come off the stage to castrate me. She verbally tore into a couple fans calling them "Giggling Drunk Fucks" and that they were ruining the performance for everyone around them. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1998 00:39:52 EST From: FredNow@aol.com Subject: Re: ways to handle the JMDL information flow (NJC) > This is perhaps a stupid question, but here goes: Does anyone have a piece or two of good > advice on how to handle all this information in an effective and rational way? IMHO, Biblical references are clear with respect to the three days JC was entombed -- you can find such references yourself with any of the several internet concordances. The problem comes from trying to reconcile current religious practices (including celebration of Easter (derived from Astarte/Ishtar), Christmas, Sunday worship, etc.) with genuine Biblical teaching. The inconsistencies began creeping-in with a certain leader of the roman empire who saw the writing on the wall and suddenly got religion. Apparently, he was able to rearrange alot of things to make his version of "christianity" more palatable to the mainstream. After all, the earliest christians were truly counter-culture, peasant drifters, who were willing to sacrifice everything in the pursuit of justice. Kind of like some of the homeless of today, who would rather drop-out and eek out an existence than be a part of this insane world we accept. Fascinating stuff. But I'm not the one to be debating with. I said bye-bye to organized religion long ago. Though I was raised in the protestant church tradition, I was disillusioned when our local minister, and genuine family friend, was "fired" by the congregation for his participation in 60's civil rights marches and anti-Vietnam war protests. Much later, I got to know a female minister who was similarly "fired" for pushing too hard to make her church accessible for wheelchairs. What incredible hypocrisy! IMHO, the last place for an organization is between us and our creator. For the record, I am a devoted follower of the teachings of JC. Sadly, I think many people have lost sight of the true nature of those profound and highly relevant teachings because they can't get past the mockery of our modern religious system.
