I've been flipping around stations in my area and have not heard anything off it. Minimal airplay combined with no video is not helping. Also, I haven't seen any print ads for the album in magazines or newspapers, has anyone else? Interviews alone aren't going to do it. I'm hoping against hope that this tour with Dylan will give things a little push. I don't know about the PFV special, though, I doubt that people who aren't really into her music will pay to watch one of her concerts and become converts. I think if it was on HBO or PBS or something that people already have access to in their homes, they might be more likely to give it a chance. Since it's followed by 'in the forests of the night' maybe she's comparing getting her music out to the record buying public to a sapling straining for the sunlight in a dense forest of tall trees. She has to *fight* to the light whereas other artists who are considered 'hip' are always boosted into that light by their labels, airplay, exposure in the media & press, etc, etc & so forth. Just a thought. I like the song. I'm beginning to think that one of the themes of Taming the Tiger is that although Joni's personal life was falling into place when she recorded it, she was still frustrated in her professional life. She found her family, was happily in love but still had not been able to attain the 'success' of selling large amounts of her albums even though she was being lauded as a great musical innovator. BTW, has anyone been able to figure out if DC cable is carrying the PPV? it looks dismal, which really surprises me. i talked to one clueless rep who couldn't tell me a thing and another who seemed to know what she was doing but couldn't find a listing for it. Actually, if they were smart they would use a section of the PPV concert as a video. It wouldn't cost them anything extra and if they insist on charging at least it might have gotten a few people curious about the concert. If it had been released earlier she might have had a better chance with all the talk about the reunion and her awards still in the news. BUT... 'sire of sorrow' is my favorite song on TI. it is so rich and beautifully written. the essence of job's plight is there in poetry. there's also context to consider - just like a DL, i'm reading joni's words without her face to go with it. i imagine her laughing that line, "i had enough experience to tackle job." and i think about the fact that she lived through the terror of having polio - no small change. and i think about everything wrapped up in 'little green'. and i think about how we all struggle in one way or another - no matter who we are and what we've got, we all have problems and bear the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, ya know? so ultimately, even if it takes great arrogance (and/or perhaps self-pity?) to compare yourself to job, the end result is a song we can relate to and perhaps learn from, just like the book of job. barbara np: van, veedon fleece ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Oct 1998 23:43:15 EDT From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: New Poll to Lighten the Load (NJC) -Reply In a message dated 10/23/98 5:26:24 PM Eastern Daylight Time, Dreamzvill@aol.com writes: << Doug - what's skydying? It was written by Patrick McDonald and appeared in the Oct. 22 Seattle Times under "New Releases." It's a very positive (although brief) review. Neil in Seattle "Taming the Tiger" Joni Mitchell (Reprise) Just as she did in two shows with Dylan (and Van Morrison) in May at the Gorge, Mitchell shows she hasn't lost any of her fire and vision, and especially her individuality, on this stunning new disc. The godmother of all female singer-songwriters explores some of the same territory that has always fascinated her--politics, ecological devastation, the state of pop music, romantic and familial relations--bringing to them new insights and wonderful poetic musings. The collection opens with an evocative tale involving a surreal circus, "Harlem in Havana." Other highlights include "Love Puts On a New Face," a richly atmospheric piece (featuring Wayne Shorter on sax) about the mystery and fickleness of love; "No Apologies," in which the Canadian singer blasts America's arrogance, violence and greed; and "Face Lift," a funny tale of an uneasy family reunion at Christmastime. In the title tune, Mitchell attacks her old nemesis, the record biz--what she used to call "the star-making machinery behind the popular song"--for the sorry state of pop. "Formula music," she sings, "genuine junk food for juveniles...The whole thing's gotten boring!" Right on, Joni! An accompanying booklet shows that Mitchell is as fine a painter as she is a songwriter, singer and guitarist. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Oct 1998 21:51:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Robert Holliston Subject: re: new poll to lighten up the heavy load roberto - libra (oct. 11) - and in fine company ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Oct 98 04:57:56 GMT From: kg@ibm.net (Kenny Grant) Subject: MN JMDLRs when are you guys gonna get home and tell us all about the Joan's opening night??? -Kenny looking forward to the concert reviews :-) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Oct 1998 01:05:50 -0400 From: trxschwa Subject: joni coverage (jc) hi, barbara made the point that there has been a lot of presence for joni lately, articles and such, but i'm not convinced that reprise deserves much credit. i've looked at the news section on their website for the last 5 months, i can't remember one joni item. mostly korn and depeche mode press releases. i've also been looking sadly at the half-page ad in the voice and the large ads in the sunday nytimes for bette midler's new album. i love bette midler, have bought the album, think it's the best thing she's done in years, and i still want to scream, why isn't joni's label pushing ttt. there is so much buzz. the reviews are terrific. where is reprise? one single damn ad would say 'this label is behind this artist'. all the articles in the world don't say that. then john wrote, about the ppv and tour w/dylan >I think both of these are mistakes, then. Both of these kind of "Preach to the choir". Non-fans will not purchase tickets to see Joni and non-fans will not pay $20 for the PPV concert. a lot of non-joni fans are going to see her soon, with dylan. she thinks she's good enough to convert them. so does bob. 'nough said? you're correct about the audience for the pay per view, but it's still promotion. people who won't spend the money this time think 'wow, joni mitchell, i remember her, and people still pay to hear her? cool' and then they might may hear something like the npr report on the herbie hancock/gershwin project with the snippet from joni's summertime. then they might be near me, clustered around the hancock section at virgin records on 10/20 going 'where's that new album?' (i actually asked, 'are you all here for the new herbie hancock?' later, in line, a man who'd been there asked me 'where...', i said, 'joni fan', he said, 'summertime', i said 'npr, and i understood marketing, finally.) summary - joni visibility - fine reprise promotion - sucks patrick np - toby twining music - shaman ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Oct 1998 00:13:33 -0600 From: Evian Subject: RS album guide (SJC) Hi. A week or so ago (I think) someone posted about how they discovered Joni through the Rolling Stone album guide. I ended up discovering Joni in the top 100 albums of all time or whatever that issue was in 87. Anyway, just wondering if anyone else noticed the ways in which the RS album guide changed over the years. When I was 14 or so, I picked up a copy of the RS album guide that was on sale for 99 cents. I believe that this edition came out at the end of the 70's or in the very beginning of the 80's. I loved this book, and I respected the reviews for the most part. Through this guide I discovered a lot of music that I would never have heard before. If it had 5, or even 4 stars, I assumed it was great. So, I was very disappointed when the new edition came out a few years ago. My old album guide was so worn, it broke in two, and I ended up losing one of the halves. Thus, I was so excited when I saw there was a new edition. However, they removed TONS of the old reviews, and they totally overhauled the reviews for albums that weren't deleted. For example, both C & S and Blue had five stars in both guides, but HOSL went from 2 stars in the first edition to 31/2 in the second. Hejira, if I remember correctly, ended up losing half a star. Did anyone else notice this, and if so, did it irk you too? Sure, I like that the reviewer found more appreciation for HOSL than the previous reviewer, but still, I was hoping for some continuity. Also, I miss not having all the reviews that were in the first edition. AND, didn't NRN get 3 1/2 stars in the mag, but it gets 4 in the album guide? I know that different reviewers will rate things differently, but still... if RS is the supposed rock Bible, they should be a little more consistent.
